  • šŸŽ™ļøEpisode 188 of the Self Made Podcast: Diet & Exercise alone is not enough for health with Bryan Walsh is now live!

I’ve been following the work of Dr Bryan Walsh my entire career. In fact I don’t think there is a bigger expert on functional nutrition, physiology and blood work around.

So I knew this episode would be special but I wasn’t prepared for quite how impactful it would be.

The concept of health can be overwhelming even for us coaches with people fighting over calories vs hormones, toxins and seed oils this episode dives into the lot.

How does our health really work and why we need to start looking at how our cells function.

But while much of this comes down to our activity and our nutrition there is one part we rarely talk about and that’s community and lifestyle.

We are in a loneliness epidemic effecting not only our mental health but also our physical health. It was amazing to hear Bryan talk about the role his faith has played in his life and discuss why people of faith tend to be healthier and happier.

This conversation goes to many levels and in my mind a must listen if you’re a fan of the show.

  • šŸŽ™ļøEpisode 186 of the Self Made Podcast: The Menopause what a coach needs to know with Dr Carrie Jones is now live!

As coaches we can have the biggest impact on the health of our clients. People often go to visit doctors when things have already progressed and make a visit every few years. As coaches we speak to our clients more frequently and can influence how our clients eat, act, feel and behave more than any other sector.

This why it is our duty to understand the health of our clients at a deeper level than purely calories. This is why it is an honour to have Dr Carrie Jones join us on the show.

She lives and breaths the above responsibility. Working with patients, diving head first into the research, educating practitioners and even working to develop better testing methods.

In this conversation we discuss the complexities of hormonal health, particularly focusing on menopause and its impact on women's health, The importance of understanding the hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause and menopause, the effects of yo-yo dieting, and the significance of gut health.

We also dive into the role of stress in exacerbating symptoms and offers practical strategies for managing these changes through lifestyle adjustments and dietary diversity.

  • šŸŽ™ļøEpisode 184 of the Self Made Podcast: Should you blindly trust the science! With Acos Ashioti is now live!

The term evidence based has become one of the most overused terms in the industry.

Everyone claims to be an expert in the science arguing with each other and throwing around terms like misinformation.

But is everyone really an expert? Is science really that easy to read and interpret?

I can honestly tell you know with research being filled with complex terms, methods to dive into, P values and many other factors that may take a study you are so confident in and make it defunct.

This is why many simply only read the abstract or rely on what others have told them so no wonder it can be so confusing who to trust and learn from.

But this is what this episode with Acos is designed for. To help you understand what the science is really telling you.

From understanding the lingo, how to break down a paper, where is the line between evidence based and practical experience and more!

We also dive into some of the most debated topics from low carb to meal timing and find the middle ground of what’s true and what is worth pursuing with your clients.

  • What does it truly take to become an authority in the fitness industry? It is a complex question with manny possible answers and that is exactly what myself and this week's guest Jordan Shallow discuss in this conversation.

The industry seems to be leaning into the quick fix territory now more than ever with the race to 10k months, the tribalistic nature of reaction videos often coming before the graft and exploration it takes to become an outstanding coach at the top of their game.

In this show I dive into the what lead Jordan to where he is now. The bit you do not always see on instagram and what he feels it takes to be an outstanding coach.

We discusses the fear of judgment and the reluctance to make mistakes in the digital age. The role of community, communication, environment and becoming a master of your craft.

But one thing Jordan lives by and a piece of advice he gave me many years ago that is more true to me today than ever. To be a great coach it comes with being a better human! Whether that is personally, professionally or in the experiences we dive into head first.

He also has commited to be my first tag team partner and enforcer when I become a pro wrestler (holding you to that Jordan!)

  • In this episode we welcome Lewis Potts to the show.

Lewis aims to make coaching great again by encouraging coaches to implement more true coaching and communication into their services.

Client adherence is the biggest roadblock that I hear coaches have. they have a good knowledge of training and nutrition but this is useless if the client cannot stick to the plan. This is why this is something both myself and Lewis focus on heavily within our programs.

In this episode we discuss the importance of asking good questions and helping clients come to their own solutions. Why expectation management is the most important skill a coach should develop and why if you do not have boundaries as a coach you will not be helping anyone.

We also dive into the rise of concern for emotional eating and if it is something we really should worry too much about as exercise professionals as well as nature vs nurture in physique change.

  • šŸŽ™ļøEpisode 181 of the Self Made Podcast: Is the carnivore diet healthy? With Steven Collins!

We have become so tribal in this industry it seems harder and harder to get an objective and balanced view on any topic. Maybe it is because the middle ground and nuance (sorry Pat Davidson I know you hate that word) does not get clicks and shares but I care less about that and more about empowering coaches with when and how to utilise the tools in their toolbox and people who want to lose weight or gain muscle a balanced view to make their own decisions.

This is why this episode exists!

I am not a pro carnivore dieter, I am also not an anti carnivore dieter.

Is it a long term diet approach for most people? Probably not!!

Is it the best diet for performance and hypertrophy? Likely no.

Can it impact make sticking to a deficit easier for some? absolutely!

Does it simplify smart choices? Sure can

Can it positively impact satiety? Yes

Can it be of benefit to some people with autoimmune issues or intolerances to fodmap foods, nightshades or various pesticides? It can be a great starting point.

You see many of us get locked into the thought process of what is ā€œbestā€ when for most of us our lifestyle changes, our priorities change, our taste changes and our health changes. A diet can be a great start point does not need to be perfect on day 1. Maybe it is an easy set of rules to follow and takes away symptoms or issues effecting ourself while we work on some of the lifestyle stuff to add more variety in down the line.

This episode breaks down all these talking points and more. When and why you would use an elimination style diet, what you do during this to rebuild variety and flexibility and who we think a animal based approach is not for.

  • šŸŽ™ļøEpisode 180 of the Self Made Podcast: Is therapy worth it? With Robb!

You never really know what life is going to throw at you. I have learned this the hard way this year when everything I thought was certain, many of the things I held dear and the person I cared about more than anything else in this world disappeared literally in an instant.

I was left trying to pick up the pieces of my life with no clarity, confusion, disappointment all while experiencing what I can only describe as grief for the life I wanted but could no longer have. What made this extra hard as this brought up many of the mental roadblocks that have followed me throughout most of my life.

    Feelings of not being enough!

Feelings of people leaving or not fighting to keep me in their life.

These are all things I have dealt with in therapy a few years back and immediately realised I needed to delve into again this year. While no one myself included could have predicted how this year would turn out I know that without therapy in my life it could have sunk me a lot lower.

Someone else who knows a lot about the process of therapy is my co-host Robb and this is what we come together to discuss in today’s episode. This episode is personal and very raw Robb coming at this from looking back and me right in the middle of looking into the eye of the storm.

We touch on the stigma around therapy if it is warranted and if it differs between men and woman and why we think this may be. We discuss how therapy is a long game and not a quick fix and how the real benefits could be seen months if not years after we sit down for the session.

We talk battles with addictions, breaking negative behaviours self awareness, how to reach out and what to do if a mate or family members of yours is struggling. Why saying you are there may not be enough and what we wanted in our darkest moments.

But I are also aware some of you listening to this may also be struggling! I can truly truly sympathise and this is why we talk what we have learned about finding the right therapist and if you feel you need to reach out to either myself or Robb our instagrams are below and we will 100% listen because together we can get through most things alone the hill becomes steep.

  • Episode 173 of the Self Made Podcast: What is the ultimate training split with Steven Collins

What do you consider the basics for a client?

Are squats, lunges, carries, deadlifts ā€œbasicā€?

Does this depend on the lifters structure, active ranges and skillset?

Perhaps it comes down to core ā€œfunctionalā€ and ā€œfoundational patternsā€

This is what me and Ste discuss in this weeks episode of The Self Made Podcast. In this we look at everything from program design, recovery, exercise selection, assessments and if your beginner clients should train to failure.

    Keywords
training fundamentals, beginners, movement patterns, isometric exercises, slow tempos, efficiency, full-body workouts, coaching skills, coaching, growth mindset, hard work, pushing limits, beginners, failure, fitness industry

    Takeaways
Beginners need to focus on learning how to train before targeting specific competitions or goals.

Key fundamentals for beginners include learning how to move well, being resilient and injury-free, controlling exercise variations, understanding rest periods and rep schemes, and building strength and athleticism.

Isometric exercises are valuable tools for beginners to improve range of motion and contraction.

Training with slow and controlled tempos helps beginners develop efficiency and neuromuscular control.

Full-body workouts are effective for beginners, providing time-efficient and comprehensive training.

Coaches should strive to improve their coaching cues, exercise selection, and ability to adapt to different training environments and client needs.
Coaches should have a growth mindset and continuously strive to improve.
Teaching beginners how to push their limits and work towards failure is important for their progress.

The fitness industry is seeing a rise in uneducated and inexperienced coaches.

The industry may shift towards higher prices for high-quality coaching in the future.

    Takeaways

The training split is important in program design as it determines how the overall volume is divided between training days.Factors to consider when determining the perfect training split include preferences, experience, muscle groups to target, injuries, recovery, and training age.Antagonist-agonist supersets can be effective for increased training density and motor unit recruitment.Backloaded structural balance is a training modality that focuses on remedial work at the beginning of the workout to improve stability and technique.Individualization is key in program design, and rules can be broken as long as there is a good reason for it. Increasing frequency of training can lead to more protein synthesis and potentially higher load per session.Four-day splits are effective for optimal results in fat loss, muscle building, and sport performance.Cross-body splits can be beneficial for females and those who struggle with recovery.Advanced body part splits allow for personalized training based on individual needs and goals.Personalization is key in program design, considering rest days, target areas, and recovery ability.Experts to learn from in program design include Tom Hibbert from Winning Strength, Stefan Gosselt from Kilo Strength, and Kassem Hanson from N1 Training.
