The Strands That Bind Us –
Today on the strands that bind us, Drew and I speak to what we have learned through our own experiences and conversations with peers on the business side of our industry which is often an undereducated topic for many of us.
For many hairstylists, there is a desire we experience that transitions from working behind the chair at another individuals salon, as an employee of a company, or maybe assisting someone else, to branching out and starting something of our own. As understandable as it is to “spread our own wings,” it’s often a path traveled without much light shed on the road ahead with many obstacles and unknowns that can cause anxiety, stress, and issues both in personal and professional sides of our lives.
While we may not have experienced everything there is out there to be experts on this topic, we wanted to share more of our own process and struggles in hopes that it is able to help some of our peers and friends both in and out of the hair industry and in any element of business in general.
Join us and listen to Matthew and Drew’s “Building a Small Business, the Woes and the Wins.”

Today we talk to Steve Courtney who is the Senior Concepts Director and former Head of New Product Innovation at Dyson. He has been at the forefront of pioneering Dyson technology for the past 23 years.
Steve has been described as Dyson’s resident ‘blue sky thinker’, and spends his days in Dyson’s secretive D9 research facility, a mirrored glass, impenetrable cube where, as he explains “we have a group of people who only think about the future.”
Dyson’s mission is simple: to solve problems others ignore. Finding these problems sits at the heart of Steve’s role – cordless vacuums that have no suck, noisy fans with spinning blades, heavy, hot and noisy hair dryers. Steve and the team search for novel ways to solve them, engineering technology that is different, better and pioneering. It was Courtney’s idea to use the motor to power the Dyson SupersonicTM Hair Dryer.

Shawna Lane did not always dream of being a hairstylist, her first loves were photography and fashion which she pursued in college. In need of extra money in school she decided to get a receptionist position at a very hip and edgy salon downtown Toronto called Coupe Bizzarre. Almost immediately she knew she had found her tribe and her new creative outlet.
After 10 years of haircutting magic and doing every creative and wild haircut you could imagine she craved a different environment and shifted her path, ending up working at the salon Matthew co-owned at the time.
Shawna has always been the most thoughtful and attentive hairstylist, sitting down with her clients chatting and listening to them to make sure she served their every need. However, her other love of health and nutrition was always put on the back burner, knowing maybe not all clients are looking for help in this are by their hairstylist. She had no idea then a shift was coming….
Two years after moving to a private studio with Matthew and their three friends, she helped start an advanced training academy called The Good Ones Academy. Shortly after that her life changed forever when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 4b…. there is no stage 5…
From that moment, she knew immediately her life would never be the same.

Kathleen leads us through the appropriations of black hair, the laws that are being passed to protect black women in the workplace and why she’s tired of saying “please don’t touch my hair.”
