Even though we’re in the midst of a natural hair renaissance, Black hair is still discriminated against, legislated against, and heavily judged—and we all have to find ways to cope with that. What’s a weave-wearer to do?! Who will protect the protective styles? What would a world without bundles, wigs, tracks, and hair care products be like? We’re about to find out.

Whether it comes from outside the community, or within racial lines, criticism of afro-textured hair is rampant. For many WOC it feels like unless you have Becky-textured tresses your hair (especially your edges) is just not acceptable. But why is afro-textured hair such a big deal? Why does it provoke such strong reactions? And why do people feel like it’s ok to bully others - even young children - because they have 4c hair or unlaid edges? Tune in for the heated convo.

The short answer is “Of course not!” That said, many women of color still feel that it is not “safe” to wear their unprocessed hair in the office. There is simply too much pressure to conform to a standard that was not created with textured hair in mind.
