John is a passionate advocate for the importance of representation in the performing arts and believes he would not be where he is if it were not for “The Lion King.” When he saw the play as a young, Black student, it was the first time he could see himself on the stage. With representation in the performing arts being a hot topic in recent media stories, such as the controversy around “The Little Mermaid,” “The Rings of Power,” and “House of the Dragon,” Devereaux can speak to his experience in rejoicing at a character that looks like him, and his hope to inspire other who look like him that no character or stage is out of reach for them either.
