Funny...didn't Pink Floyd releaase a single with the same title at about the same time? (Pink Floyd:Apples And Oranges, est & fade) ....and so, my eureka moment....struggling with a theme for this week's VinylExperience...it's right there...like apples and oranges...some songs can share the same title, but be verydifferent..case in point--let's stay with with Pink Floyd, and a cut from their 1970 album "Atom Heart Mother," called"If, " and follow that with a very different group, song of the same title, and similar emotional tenor...can you guesswho it will be ...Pink Floyd: IfBread: IfThe VE with Bread, and Pink Floyd...two groups as different as apples and oranges, and two different, but relatablesongs with the common title of "If." See how this works. OK.. I'm PC and this is the VERoll 'Em Pete Big Joe Turner 1938Prehistoric rock on the VE. From the year 1938 AD that's the blues shouting daddy of em all, Big JoeTurner with "Roll Em Pete." One of the first R&B recordings to make use of what was to become the rockand roll back beat - as opposed to the more common shuffle rhythm. This song was later recorded byCount Basie, and Joe recorded with the Basie band in later years. Joe Turner was the frist to record Shake,Rattle and Roll, which later became a hit for Bill Haley and His Comets.Things are really rockin at the House Of Blue Lights....Freddie Slack and Ella May Morse...House of Blue Lights Freddie Slack (co-writer with Don Ray) and Ella Mae Morse 1946Down the Road Apiece: Will Bradley Trio 1940Dinosaurs roam the earth again--it's prehistoric rock on the VE. Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five tore it up withhilarious story-songs. And like the legendary flying saucer that crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico, thealien music life form of rock and roll was taking shape with some help from country cousin HankWilliams, and right there Jack Guthrie and the western swing jam "Oakie Boogie, which Bill Haley'sRock Around The Clock owes a debt to. Jack was the cousin of the seminal American music figure whowould have been 100 years old this week. Woody introduced one element of what would become rockthat we haven't touched on yet...the political and intellectual...soomething that was rare in popular musicof his day...but as a folk singer, Woody could speak his mind, and he makes an obvious political
statement in this song from 1940:Woody Guthrie: Jesus ChristRobert Wilkins; That's No Way To Get AlongPre Historic Rock on The VE....Woody Guthrie, Jesus Christ, and Revered Robert Wilkins, "That's NoWay To Get Along..." rock rooted in bible stories....and that last one brings us to the half century markthis week of the British rock band that brought all the early influences together in an entirely new,original sound.Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away50 years ago, the Rolling Stones played their first gig at The Marquee Club in London. This week, theyposed outside thevenue and strongly hinted at a fiftieth anniversary tour. Not Fade Away. 20 years ago,let alone 50, who would have thought that would be The Rolling Stones legacy.To top off this VE exploration of Prehistoric rock, here is an evocative and epic song by another greatinterperter of the rock roots. Frustration grips the VE today, with George Harrison feeling it in his last yeears with The Beatles, and letting it all out on All Things Must Pass. Buddly Miles from Them Changes and a seldom heard version of the Allman Brothers great modern blues, "Dreams I'll Never See." The new LP by The Mountain Goats is rich and reewarding...not frustrating at all. It's Trancendental Youth, and from it, a song that works out some issues called "Cry For Judas."
