  • This episode, I have Dr. Dawna Ballard of UT Austin on the show to talk about the tool of time, the feelings we have associated with our commitments in keeping time, how the age of electricity created a huge shift in our work lives and expectations and the biological and external pacers that run our lives. Dawna Ballard (Ph.D., University of California at Santa Barbara, 2002) is an expert in chronemics—the study of time as it is bound to human communication. She researches what drives our pace of life and its impact on the communication practices and longterm vitality of organizations, communities, and individuals. Her research and commentary have been featured in mainstream news outlets such as Quartz, Huffington Post, PBS MediaShift, NPR, and at venues such as Creative Mornings and SXSW Interactive 2016. This March she will be speaking at SXSW Interactive 2018 on her recent research: It’s Time: How to Find Alignment & Abandon Work-Life Balance. Big shout out to all of you who contributed!

Don, Katy, Amber, dad, Renee, Chris, Annette, Veronica, Rebekka, Virginia, and, my wonderful husband, Jeremy.

    Favorite guest quote:

Balance – people just gave up on it. Because they were like. How am I supposed to do that? And then it became a feather in your cap - a thing to achieve: I’m so balanced. We don’t accomplish life; we just live life.

Some things we talk about in this episode: Not to focus on our own grand plans Some things literally just take time The temporal commons Biological and external pacers Finding agency with our own time The illusion of work-life balance Being human can be inconvenient Links mentioned:

  • This week I have Heidi Hardy on the show to talk about motherhood, the crazy journey of self-development, how religion can feel like a straightjacket, finding nourishment for our souls, and how most of the time, it's not them it's us.

At Real Life Media, LLC we provide media services to small to medium-sized business, non-profit organizations and SMBs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Together with my husband, Michael, our goal is to help people and their businesses succeed so our communities prosper.

I am curious by nature, therefore, I spend a large portion of my time meeting new people, building and maintaining meaningful professional relationships and being a resource to as many people as possible. As a natural "Connector" it has been my distinct pleasure to connect others to resources that will help them meet their goals and build their dreams.

With three grown children, two adorable grandsons and a large extended family, there are no words to describe my gratitude for the abundance I experience in each day.

    Favorite guest quote:

"It's that we were told a certain thing so our stories from the womb start to be created. If you're brave enough to break away from those memories and those stories, which is hard because if you think about it that's what you have. It is now the way that you behave and act and so when your pain is so great, with that pain... but when we really search and hear ourselves look at life as a victim, it's justified. For most people, it gets down to how painful is it? Your change catalyst is really about your threshold for that in your life."

Some things we talk about in this episode: How religion plays a part in our core self-development We can be our worst enemies based on what we choose to believe about ourselves Realizing the pain you're holding onto can be your motivation as your change catalyst Why it's important to walk around with a full cup The work it takes to be a parent your kids deserve Links mentioned:

  • Next Sunday, the first official episode of Over Coffee will air for 2018. This year, I have guests like Heidi Hardy of Real Life Media, author & blogger Brianna Wiest, and the unparalleled Dr. Dawna Ballard of UT Austin.

The last 10 episodes on Over Coffee we talked about different aspects of being human and how they affect our every day lives whether we realize it or not. This year, my focus will be to take you on a journey
a journey where we expand on those topics by bringing on new guests who have a keen eye and heart for how to put what they think and believe into practice. They’ll be sharing insights as to how the subject at hand has played itself out in their lives and how you can be more aware to make real change in your life as well. I’ve also decided to do something a little different. I will no longer be producing a weekly show. Instead, I’ll be posting new episodes whenever I believe the episode has reached its full potential. Like a lot of my favorite shows I admire, I want to take the time necessary to create something unique and meaningful to you. If you want to know what I’m up to with Over Coffee on the daily, check out melaniescroggins.com or find me on Facebook and Twitter. • As we approach the new year, I wanted to wrap up this season with a topic that brings together everything we've been talking about the past couple months.

This week, we're talking about Authenticity: combating conformity in the modern age, the question of “why am I doing this”, embracing the challenges of approaching life as a couple, and facing your fears to unlock the pent-up potential within you.

Brooke Baum is a writer, adventurer, lifetime rebel, and nomad. She runs TrailingAway.com with her husband Buddy - a blog with lots of outdoor-focused travel inspiration, as well as insights on marriage, life, and full-time RVing. Brooke is also the Assistant Editor and a regular contributor for WinnebagoLife.com, Winnebago's lifestyle blog.

    Favorite Guest Quote:

At the end of the day, you're the only person who has control of that. And if you feel like you are not your true self or you're at this place where you're combating a different version of yourself. That is something you have to work on within yourself. If there are relationships or situations that are creating a divide within you, that's something you have to make a point to change or realize that's going to be a problem for the rest of your life.

A few things we talk about in episode 10: What authenticity looks like in the every day Learning how to be yourself in spousal relationships Making decisions based on what you want for your life There are consequences to not showing up as ourselves Links mentioned in episode 10:

  • This week, we're getting really personal and talking about the Body: the good, the bad, and the straight up ugly while learning to embrace all three.

We talk about the unrealistic expectations placed on women in many parts of the world, the beauty of enthusiastic consent, and how to love each and every part of ourselves.

Disclaimer: This week's episode may be triggering for certain individuals. We discuss rape, eating disorders and like topics.

Chloe Pedley is the founder of Polkadotsi. Her mission in life is to teach people to eat, move, and think because they love themselves.

She is a passionate advocate of self-love and is always happy to chat about fitness, sex, and women's issues.

    Favorite guest quote:

That's where this has come from: it started with sex; it started with talking about enthusiastic consent; it started with talking about sex positivity and all the implications of that and understanding that our bodies are these magnificent things - they are ours. And it doesn't' matter if it's curvy; if it's muscular; if its fat; if its skinny; these are still our bodies and they are beautiful.

A few things we talk about in episode 9: Social constructs of beauty and how we should be, especially as women Being kind to ourselves Becoming allies over enemies Voting with our wallets Links mentioned in episode 9:

  • This week, we're talking about Gratitude: being intentional with our time, acting on those feelings of gratefulness, and how gratitude can combat the negative thoughts and feelings within us.

Texas native, currently residing in Bellingham, Washington.

Sam Cooke fan and mediocre barista, in that order.

    Favorite guest quote:

Practicing gratitude has this really interesting effect wherein it forces us to zoom out. We have to view life from a larger landscape sort of from above; it's like getting a bird's eye view - it forces you to take a really realistic inventory of what you do have, what it is you're hoping to have.

A few things we talk about in episode 8: The unexplainable word we use for expressing thankfulness that is gratitude Losing and reclaiming sight of gratitude in our lives Connecting and drawing ourselves to the things that make us grateful Links mentioned in episode 8:

  • This week, we're talking about Passion: what it can look like, how others are pursuing their passions, and why it’s important for you to find yours.

Debbie Arcangeles is a therapist for children diagnosed with autism and the host of The Offbeat Life podcast where she aims to help people Live Their Best Life and be Location Independent.

By following her passions Debbie has been able to work in a variety of industries which took her all over the world before becoming a therapist and travel podcaster.

Nickie is a nurse practitioner and podcaster dedicated to living a life of passion. She is a strong promoter of health and an advocate for women fulfilling their potential.

After finishing her degree in Communications and International Studies in 2002, Nickie worked in tech startup, international education, and marketing before attending nursing school at the University of British Columbia. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she completed a specialty certificate in critical care before proceeding to graduate school. She earned her Masters of Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Washington where her capstone project focused on palliative treatment for heart failure patients.

After many years of schooling, Nickie finally had time to devote to her entrepreneurial spirit. In 2017, she launched The Things She Does—a podcast devoted to women who are pursuing their passion and making it work, aiming to encourage and inspire women to pursue their passion. After completing grad school with young children at home, she understands the struggle and sacrifice of pursuing a passion, but also the incredible rewards.

    Favorite guest quotes:

Do what it is that makes your heart skip a little bit or your stomach have those butterflies and just try to pursue it. Debbie I just think, you know, you need to have something. I was talking with one girl and she was like "I don't even know what I like anymore. ' And my heart just broke. You are more than a mom. Being a mom is so incredible and it is such a big part of your identity, but you are more than that. Before you were a wife before you were a mom you were a woman and you are still that woman. One day your kids are going to go to school and graduate and one day they are going to leave home and if you don't take time to nurture and pursue yourself you're going to be lost. Nickie

A few things we talk about in episode 7: Passion doesn't pay for itself in the beginning, so having a job that reflects your values and desires in the workplace is important for keeping your passion alive If you don't know what you're passionate about, try everything You can find the time to pursue your passion It is important to establish your identity outside your spouse and kids Links mentioned in episode 7: The OffBeat Life The OffBeat Trekker The Things She Does Podcast

  • This week we're talking about Fear: what it means, what it looks like in the day to day, and how we have to face it to overcome it.

I am truly honored that the women who participated in the show this week were so transparent with me. I am inspired by their honesty and tenacity.

Also, Happy Halloween! I hope you all have a wonderful, fun, and safe holiday.

A big fan of outsourcing and building the right team, her favorite thing to say to her fabulous clients is -

“Let me focus on my genius, so you can focus on yours.”

    Favorite guest quotes:

"I think of it as blanky. Kind of like one of those ones you see the toddlers running around with it's just totally tattered and has ketchup and chocolate stains all over it and it keeps you safe and warm and you just want to carry it with you everywhere you go and hide behind it."

    Heather

“I thought I was solving all my problems by just going on a new adventure
Pulling up on the lawn and staying
it’s the first time where I’ve been in this situation where I’ve actually stayed somewhere and tried to work it out. It’s such a learning process. I think the last two years have marked this transition where I stopped seeking answers everywhere around the world I could and now I’m like I see you actually have to stay and work on things. Life isn’t 100% happy all the time. It’s a balance.”

    Lynn

"When we have something horrible happen to us one of the things that can help us overcome it is simply being acknowledged; that it did happen to you. This is the same thing of me saying honor whatever it is you're fearful of if it was a situation that happened, honor that in yourself. Recognize that in yourself."

Jill A few things we talk about in episode 5: Fear is healthy for our growth We've got to put our fears in the backseat and realize we're the driver Running away from our fears doesn't make them go away Sometimes, our fear is misplaced worry or regret Getting through fear means getting back on the horse - it's not that we never fell off the horse, but it's a way to recognize what happened and start to heal Links mentioned in episode 5: Heather Johnson's Tiptoe to Wellness: tiptoetowellness.com Jill Sessa: jillsessa.com Lynn Grogan: lynngrogan.com Natasha's Justice Project: https://natashasjusticeproject.org/ Mine Space on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/minespace17/ Mine Space on Twitter: https://twitter.com/minespace16

  • This week, we're talking about Confidence: why some believe it is earned, the benefits of facing confidence as a team, and how following the detours life gives you can help you gain more confidence. Favorite guest quotes:

“I watched my mom, who is a very confident woman, but I couldn't take her confidence and be a confident woman. I’m her daughter, but I’m not her. So I had to go my own journey.” Erin "I think, you know, being able to approach something as a team allows you to start achieving more than you thought you could have
you can really start to become more confident even as an individual. I think our relationship has been very instrumental in building each other up into the people we are now." Dan "We balance each other out well, I think. So we might be insecure about a weakness we have, but we kind of as a team balance each other out so that weakness doesn’t ruin our confidence, it just allows the other person to step up." • The first bonus episode of Over Coffee. I received a lot of great feedback from my interview with Whitney. The conversation of sexual assault is extremely important to have no matter the medium. I want to be sure you have the opportunity to listen to the whole interview if you're interested. This episode contains sensitive material and is not suitable for all listeners.

  • This week, we're talking about Voice: what it is, why it matters, and what it looks like from a couple different perspectives. A few things we talk about in Episode 1: Being a teenager can be awkward and facing your fear can be life changing When you disagree with others, approaching them with empathy goes a long way Rates of reporting sexual assault vs disclosure rates of sexual assault vary greatly Despite the pervasiveness of sexual assault across the US, it has become a more widely studied topic that has aided researchers and law enforcement alike in creating new ways of measuring current statistical data Favorite guest quotes:

"I have learned that responding with compassion, and approaching situations with curiosity and then some education can go a long way. I'm more empowered when I can respond like that instead of in anger."

    - Camille

"That disconnect that comes from the letter of law and our cultural ideas of what constitute sexual assault
so you know, if it wasn’t a stranger, if you didn’t sustain an injury, you know, that somebody didn’t jump out of the bushes then it does’t actually constitute a “real sexual assault.” And that’s clearly ridiculous."
