  • Hello and welcome to Episode 109 of Webflail!

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur. Today, we have the multi-talented Bimo Tri joining us from Jakarta, Indonesia. Bimo is the founder of Studio BAMOJ, where he combines cutting-edge design with Webflow development to craft stunning web experiences across diverse industries, from luxury brands to NFTs.

Check out his work at BAMOJ—that's B-A-M-O-J dot com. The site is incredible, showcasing top-tier work. I first came across BMO’s work on Twitter, or as it's now called, "X," where he shared some remarkable projects. His ability to blend Webflow with GSAP animations is something you don’t see often in the Webflow space.

Bimo is an Awwwards judge, a professional Webflow partner, and a pioneer in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with Webflow and GSAP. But today’s episode isn’t just about his awards and amazing projects—it’s also about his journey through failure to reach this level of success.

We’ll dive into some of Bimo's challenges, including:

Failing with his first online dropshipping business,Struggling to recognize client red flags and learning it’s okay to demand respect, andUnderstanding that freelancing or running a studio is still a business, even as a solo founder.

  • Hello and welcome to episode 108 of Webflail. I'm your host Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Maya Chungbin. She is a freelance illustrator and visual identity designer that goes under the name of SaltyStill. Combining her skillsets with her Webflower boyfriend, Alex Villacres, the two are killing it!

I came across her since she's been doing this daily challenge. Her daily challenges got her loads and loads of conversations started about her work. She started on Fiverr and now, she's worked with over a thousand clients on things like storefronts, websites, packaging, maybe even your nighttime read. But get this guys, she's working with small companies helping them transform their dreams into reality through effective marketing.

The failures that we'll discuss today are:
    1) Thinking she needed to know more to get started
    2) Not doing internal check ins and burning out
    3) Expecting an outcome and taking things too seriously

  • Hello and welcome to episode 107 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today I am joined by none other than Tolu Abolarin.

This guy came up to me at FlowFest in Manchester. He was a little nervous and said, "Hey Jack, I listen to the podcast, I'm a big fan."

I was like, "Oh my God, someone listens to the Webflail podcast! I appreciate you, thanks so much!" We stayed in contact, and he recently reached out and said, "Hey Jack, would you mind if I came on and shared my story?" He's got a killer story, as you're about to find out today, so I'm very glad to have him on.

Tolu moved to Birmingham from Nigeria last year. He now works at Greater Studio, based in New York, freelancing for them while also doing his own freelance projects. He's got a killer portfolio, so definitely check that out: ToluMEN.com—that's T-O-L-U-M-E-N.com. His portfolio is beautiful. He does both design and development, and he's really starting to make waves. But has it always been easy? Of course not.

The three failures we'll be discussing today are:
    1) Chasing money over quality and not niching down
    2) Not networking enough
    3) Working for a startup without a formal agreement—or not getting paid.

  • Hey, I'm Jack, your failure connoisseur and today, I'm interviewing myself.

My guest dropped out last minute, so I'm afraid I am going to be doing episode 106 of Webflail, which is a bit narcissistic. But I wanted to get an episode out there, and I've basically been asked a few times how freelancing is going.

    It's going okay...

But the failures that I want to talk about today are:
    1. Setting up an emergency fund before quitting your job to go freelancing
    2. Cash flow
    3. Working with friends versus showing the work you want to get

Hopefully this is helpful for anyone that's been asking me how freelancing is going and I've been like, yeah, it's going great.

  • Welcome to episode 105 of Webflail and I am joined by the almighty Luke Netti!

Now you've probably seen Luke floating around on the Twittersphere, but if you haven't, Luke does a lot. Websites for businesses that are looking to scale. He does brand messaging, websites, and sales funnels that help businesses grow.

So note web flow is at the start of this episode. He is not just making flowery animations. He is trying to focus in as a web flower that's focused on business results. So we'll talk a little bit about that during this episode. We actually met quite recently, uh, online because, um, there's client stuff that Luke is transitioning from and transitioning to.

We were talking about supporting him on that, which we might touch on during this episode, but. Although he's flying high, although he's a successful freelancer, and frankly, he's just killing it in the game. There have been some failures along the way:

    1) Not focusing on relationships early enough in his career
    2) Trying to systematize and scale too early
    3) Raising his prices too quickly and not doing so gradually.

  • Hello and welcome to episode 104 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Manuel Ogomigo.

    He’s an impressive dude

5 months ago, he quit his stable UX job to dive into the wild world of freelancing and building products in public.

    After 4 years, he quit.

    And he launched Flowdrive.

    In his own words, crickets.

    But now, things are moving.

Did you know he has built 8 other products before this?!

He’s a Webflow and memberstack expert and he’s got a smile as big as the Niger Delta.

Has it always been easy for Manuel? Or has it been a real struggle with some massive failures along the way? You be the judge.

The failures that we’ll discuss are:

While working in design, not doing enough research results in failed product and layoff :)Not doing marketing enoughAlmost destroying flowdrive, clearing all assets with a silly mistake

  • Hello and welcome to episode 103 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Theo Roland

Theo is a man you have no doubt come across on your escapades in the world of Webflow but just in case you haven’t, he’s leading the charge in the Francophone Webflow community.

What does Francophone mean? It means french speaking.

He’s french and runs InitWeb, which includes a frenchspeaking Webflow community, InitClub (1043 people in the slack), as well as bootcamps, self-paced courses and other resources.

Before this, he was a freelancer that taught people online.

On YouTube, he has 1.43K subscribers•114 videos

So, he’s a Webflow Expert & Global Community Leader, but has it always been this way?

Has it always been as dreamy as a float down the river seine with a bottle of vin rouge?

    NO!

The failures that we will talk about today are:

The failure of launching a studio alongside early-stage training. Unable to scale quickly enough -> Abandonment of this premature project in 2021, project revival in 2024.The failure in emotionally managing all the help requests from the Francophone Webflow Community Slack. Unable to respond to everyone -> Acceptance of the need to allow others to respond and understanding how to sustain a community independently. The failure to properly understand the content expected by the Community and the Learners of the training. Better tracking of needs and gamification to encourage completion. -> Fewer basic questions, more technical questions, easier content creation.

  • Hello and welcome to episode 102 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Nikolai Bain.

This man isn't just slicked back hair and a glorious moustache. He's also a formidable Webflower.

He’s currently focussing on growth tactics

In his own words, he builds thoughtful websites for businesses that are about to launch, in need of a refresh, or ready to scale

    More Nikolai facts:

49 templates in the Webflow template libraryWorked with clients in industries such as carbon footprinting technology, data analytics and digital advertising5.81K followers on the YT76 videos recorded and published

So, he’s in his twenties, his consistent YT publishing, his dry sense of kiwi humour have helped him fly like Icarus but has he flown too close to the sun sometimes.

    Like Icarus...

Turns out he is fallible. He does fail sometimes.

The failures that we’ll discuss today are:

Side project failure: https://www.localfinds.co.uk/ - a client generation failureWork failure: working with an agency that is a bad fit and not getting paidFreelancing failure: failing to pick a video content niche and therefore getting too many different types of projects requests

  • Hello and welcome to episode 101 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Stephanie Bruce.

She’s a digital Designer and Framer/Webflow Developer that worked on OFF GRID & 10X Conference websites.

She has got a great eye for design - you know when you look at premium work and just go GODDAMN.

That’s how I feel whenever I see posts from Stephanie on social of beautiful mock ups and renders.

Speaking of renders, she’s also doing a lot more 3D work too recently being involved in the FlowParty course so excited to chat to her about that and more

    She’s freelancing like a boss.

    BUT HAS IT BEEN EASY?

The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

    1. Poor time underestimating

    2. Not appreciating the importance of networking and sharing work

    3. Feeling the pressure to keep up with design trends

  • So, for the 100th episode, I decided to get the big guns in, fly to SF and do this bad boy in person with the CEO (at the time) and co-founder of Webflow, Vlad Magdalin.

Vlad came to US as a refugee with his parents from Russia.

He learnt graphic design almost by accident when he worked with his entrepreneurial dad asked him to convert catalogues from english to Russian.

This lead to a job with a company called Russian American media → deepened his interest in graphics and then 3D animation.

At college, he studied computer science but dropped out to go to the academy of art in San Francisco.

The technical aspect of sophisticated 3D and animation tools and feeling like he was getting superpowers really interested Vlad.

He dropped out of art school and got a job at a design agency.

Why can’t web designers design stuff and hit publish to be live on the web just like 3D - render something and it’s live on the screen

As you may have guessed, this spark was the catalyst for Webflow.
Webflow now has over 200,000 users and is over $100 million annual revenue.

And it was an easy ride with no failures whatsoever.

No no no dear Webflailer… it wasn’t quite this easy.

The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

    1) Not valuing himself when he went back to freelancing – until a client rejected my invoice for $750 and said that to him the site is worth at least $5k

    2) Stopping to work on Webflow in 2008 (for the 3rd time) when there was a trademark issue and I couldn’t use that name – combined with Weebly raising money

    3) (Not sure if I can talk about this one publicly yet… noodling on it) Getting too caught up in the no-code hype and trying to do too much (e.g. Logic) before fully nailing the fundamentals (e.g. CMS)

  • Today my guest is Vimalan Vijayskaran, the founder of ViDesigns.

He's three years into his agency journey. He has successfully completed, along with his five -man team, over 200 Webflow projects, partnering with top global brands such as Red Bull, Tony Blair Institute, London Interdisciplinary School and loads of other people, obviously.

Now in 2022, they expanded their horizons by venturing into product development. They have built to date six different products and they have over 25 ,000 active monthly users.

These include Formly, FlowPlay, VDS, Chrome extension, FlowPilot, VDS Webflow extension and Bulk SEO.

I'd be surprised if you guys hadn't used at least one of those in the last week alone.

Interestingly, he's worked for Finsuite, Code and Wonder and Hans Springer Labs.

This was all before he started his own studio. We'll get into that and much more in this episode. But of course, it's not all been smooth sailing. This kind of growth does not come with some growing pains.

The fails that we talk about in today's episode are hiring the wrong people slash unable to delegate, failing to scope the project properly and set expectations and taking too long to understand that retainers aren't that bad.

So, embrace and learn from failure in episode 98 of Webflail with Virmalam

The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

Hiring the wrong people / unable to delegateFailing to scope the project properly & set expectationsTook too long to understand that retainers aren't that bad

  • Today my guest is Chloe Daly.

Designing, leading, marketing, SaaS products and high conversion websites is her thing.

She is a killer UI UX designer. Her practice is focused on data informed human centered solutions containing various UI UX design and methodologies.

Now, what's interesting about Chloe is she is doing not just her full time job, but she's also slowly doing her agency.

So she's working full time as a product designer at Peak, which is based in Manchester and the UK and then she's doing a few projects outside of her job as well and slowly growing that.

So as you're about to hear, she is on a roll.

She's working with clients like Foot Locker by day and then her own freelance clients by night.

But has it been easy? Of course not guys. You know the drill by now. Episode 97. You've heard me say this a few times already.

    The failures are:

    1) Knowing if a project for you or not
    2) Not knowing business skills earlier
    3) Not getting contracts signed even with friends

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Benten Woodring

    He’s prolific

    Here's why:

He's the Sr Web Designer @bunsenstudio, the studio which allies with emergent and advancing science-based companies for strategy, brand, and messaging.

He's building @nooon_studio where web experiences reach critical class. He's also developing @footrdesign, the only footer gallery on earth and a course, Intro To Web Design, Figma Plugins, all the best Figma Plugins— in one place and Pixel pushers and Dare to share...

He’s also prolific at documenting his journey on Twitter.

With feedback from clients, sneak peaks of behind the scenes of collaborators.

He seems like he’s living the dream working with peeps like Devin Fountain, Dare to share challenges, Has it all been easy? LEMME TELL YOU, no it hasn’t.

The failures we’ll discuss today are:
    1) Not asking for help
    2) Scaling my studio
    3) Allowing work to take over my life

  • Today, my guest is Julieta Rubio. She's a frontend developer based in Argentina, and combines her love for technology with her passion for art and design.

She’s got an interesting background - she was a tour guide for a wine company in mendoza before retraining as a Growth Engineer for Embeddables building websites and embeddable tools using Webflow, Javascript, HTML5 and CSS3.

While she was working at Embeddables, she was learning, growing and developing and starting to get some freelance work.

Now get this, after 4 years at Embeddables, she’s just quit to strike out on her own as a freelancer.

She recently obtained her Webflow’s Partnership certification and now she’s ready to rumble 🎉

Some fails along the way so far include:

    1) Drastic site blunder

    2) Payment method nightmare

    3) Complex migration face plant

  • Today, my guest is David Anierobi!‍

    Some David facts:

He’s a designer and web developer located somewhere in Amsterdam (currently although he's a digital nomadding around at this stage of life)He’s passionate about education too - with a YouTube channel with 2.12K subs where he teaches tips about Webflow, and a mentorship program called unlocking the power of Webflow, the man shares as much as he devs.He freelances with clients and also freelancing for agencies. He’s probably got one of the biggest smiles out there in the Webflow space.

His philosophy in life is "I can do all things... if given the right opportunity and chance to" which is beautiful - he’s hustled and bustled to get to the position that he’s in in life. BUT, has it been easy? Has it always been predestined?

Or has he had some face-plants and failures along the way that have given him the insights he needed to succeed?!The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

    1) Not understanding the business of freelancing. Not getting full disclosure Or details for a project and it didn’t end well.

    2) Being too positive made you lose a good gig. Never saying “NO”. This is a situation I still battle with 😆

    3) Placing more focus on tools rather than people and connection

  • Today my guest is Dan Hardaker.

Dan is the Director of Digital Design and co-owner at Proctor + Stevenson.

P+S is one of the UK’s longest-established full-service marketing agencies, offering business-to-business marketing strategy, branding and technology.

Dan is one of the longest-serving employees there having been there for 11 years and 8 months.

Clients include Panasonic, Epson & South West Water.

But if this agency is such a well-established and more traditional agency, you might think that

they are not stuck in their ways, stuffy and less forward thinking.

Far from it - this agency is quick to adopt new technology and Dan is hyper aware of available tools and tech out there.

Their new website, built on Webflow, and explorations of how to use Webflow more broadly with enterprise clients are helping to push the UK Webflow market forward. We’ll get in to this more in today’s episode.

You might think life has always been pretty rosy for Dan if you look at him now with a formidable team, enterprise clients and beautiful office in the heart of Bristol.

But as you may have guessed, there’s been some fundamental fails to learn from to get here.

The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

    1) Clear Communication
    2) Comprehensive Testing
    3) Due Diligence in Hiring

  • Hey Webflailers!

Today, my guest is Keegan Leary.

Keegan Leary, otherwise known as Webbae, is somewhat of a legend in the Webflow community.

After having served 10 years in the Navy as a submarine officer, he graduated from coding bootcamp (Hack Reactor)

He then went on to Upwork and was top ranked (100% Job Success score, 20+ ratings, only 5-star ratings)

He then I’m diving headfirst into becoming a better programmer by teaching others on my YouTube channel and offering tools and apps (7.55k)

    Since then, he's launched:
Webflow 201 course → Patreon → Clip Bae → Asset Bae

When he’s not on the tools, you may find running up hills trail running and backpacking with his wife Heather. For fun.

He’s at the peak? Or is here? And did he stumble on his path to success?

The fails we’ll talk about in the episode are:
    1) Almost sinking a sub in port...
    2) Failures with restore from backup
    3) Pricing his 201 course...

  • Hey Webflailers!

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Isabelle Cuisset.

Fascinatingly, her background is in merchandising.

She has an extensive background in the fashion industry, working with major luxury brands such as Burberry, Loewe, and Prada for over two decades.

Moving towards the digital world, she graduated from a ten-month Web Development Bootcamp at TripleTen (ex Practicum by Yandex) in 2021. Driven by her passion, she decided to launch her own web design and development studio.

3 days a week, she’s still in the fashion world and 2 days a week as a Webflower.

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

Failing to realise what you see is not always what you get!Failing to get content from clients before starting a projectFailing to learn something new every day

  • I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Kendra Rainey.

She’s the coolest woman I know.

She’s the VP of Strategy of Content at Edgar Allan in Atlanta in the States.

She’s writing a book about branding and a dead simple strategy for people if wondering if branding is bullshit.

She’s a strategist and writer who's been shaping brands and creating creating content for companies big and small for the past decade and a half.

She’s been a freelancer, a big brand-agency strategist and most recently, manage the brand and content strategy practice at a boutique digital product shop

Naturally, failure has been part of her story just like any successful webflower we have on the pod!

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

Failed to launch a career in public education and then failed to be a big-shot NYC agency creativeBeing a crappy off-the-cuff performer for a long timeI spent a lot of time failing at appearing confident and assertive in your younger years
