Trigger Warning: Alcoholism and Addiction
In line with "Dry January" and starting a new year, this episode is a continuation of this months focus on reassessing your relationship with alcohol and shinning a light on the ways we, as a society and the media, normalise and encourage its consumption; bombarding us with toxic and confusing messaging from childhood through to adulthood.
Alcohol is listed as the MOST harmful drug (above heroine and crack cocaine), and is destroying millions of lives and families every year; costing the NHS billions year on year and being the biggest cause and risk factor for death, ill health, disease and disability among 15 to 49 year olds in the UK. None of us are in the dark about what alcohol actually is - a drug. Yet, most of us refuse to acknowledge our own relationship with and even laugh off the destructive realities surrounding it.
On this weeks episode, host Jennie is joined by Millie Gooch. She is the Author of 'Booze Less' and the Founder of Sober Girl Society. She is also an Ambassador for Alcohol Change UK. Millie has also been sober for 7 years. Millie candidly shares her challenges and issues with her own alcohol abuse and details the realisations that drove her to becoming sober. She talks about the conscious choices she made and continues to make in living life alcohol free.

TRIGGER WARNING: Alcoholism and Death
1 in 5 people in the UK are affected by a parents drinking (Nacoa Study)Over 600,000 people in the UK are currently alcohol dependent. Of these, only 18% are receiving treatmentAlcohol abuse is the biggest risk factor for DEATH, ill health and disease and disability among 14 to 49 year olds in the UKIn 2020, there were almost 1 million alcohol related hospital admissions in England; putting a heavy strain on the NHS. Alcohol abuse and consumption costs the NHS an estimated £3.5 billion per year in England and costs an estimated £2.1 billion per year to society as a whole.
Millions of children grow up in households where one or both parents struggle with alcohol addition. Often times, the addiction goes hand-in-hand with domestic abuse and child abuse/neglect. This is an ugly reality that so many people want to ignore or excuse away. Many parents carry shame or guilt around their addiction, never facing it head on or fail to see it as dysfunctional, as it's generational trauma passed on. The long term ramifications and impact of alcohol abuse on the family and on society can be catastrophic, and is destroying the childhoods and healthy development of too many kids.
Joining host Jennie on today's episode is Jennifer Payne. She is a NACOA Ambassador (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) and the child of an Alcoholic. Jennifer speaks candidly about how her mothers alcoholism consumed her childhood and still affects her life to this day, as well as discusses the complexities around what happens to the mother-daughter relationship when the mother is an alcoholic, and how that can present. Alcoholism caused the deaths of several people in Jennifer's family and she addresses the realities of generational alcoholism and trauma.
Many carry shame, guilt and embarrassment around having an alcoholic parent or BEING an alcoholic parent. In sharing her story and being so raw, Jennifer allows others to feel seen and heard. With so many people sharing the same or similar experience with alcoholism, no one needs to feel alone. There is help and support and more importantly, community, through organisations like NACOA.

TRIGGER WARNING: Alcoholism, Mental Health and Death
There are approx 3 million children in the UK living with and alcoholic parent (Nacoa Study)Kids of alcoholic parent(s) are 6x more likely to witness domestic abuse, 3x more likely to consider suicide, 2x more likely to become an alcoholic (Nacoa Study)Alcohol was named as the MOST harmful drug in a study that ranked 20 drugs in accordance with the harm they cause to othersAlcohol was given a harm score of 72 out of 100 whilst Heroine and Crack Cocaine were ranked a harm score of 55 out of 100 and 54 out of 100January is often the month when many people take a break from alcohol ("dry January"). Some do it to recalibrate after over indulging over the Christmas period and some find themselves really taking a step back and assessing their relationship with alcohol; hopeful for a healthier year ahead.
The topic of alcohol and alcoholism is often avoided. Many people laugh off the severity and facts of alcoholism in the UK because many people are too uncomfortable to reflect on their own relationship with alcohol; perhaps out of fear they themselves may have a problem with it. So, we normalise alcohol use - there always seems to be a good reason or excuse to have a drink. But it's never just ONE drink....is it.
Alcohol abuse is destroying the lives of children and families across the UK at and alarming rate. And yet, so many of us are still in denial.
Sarah Drage is a Nacoa Ambassador (National Association for Children of Alcoholics), a TED X Speaker and Mental Health Advocate. She is also the child of an Alcoholic. Sarah joins host Jennie in todays episode to share her story of growing up with an alcoholic parent, and how it negatively impacted her as a child, teenager and now adult. She details watching her father die of alcoholism and how it ravaged his mind and body, and how it has impacted her mental health and relationship with alcohol.
Many of us carry shame and embarrassment around our experience growing up around alcoholics and/or our own relationship with the drug. This episode aims to shine a light on this all too common experience and feeling(s) and take the loneliness out of it. If this sounds like you or your experience as a child of an alcoholic, you are not alone. There are so many people who share your story and are available and eager to help, listen and support.

LOVE....
Everyone wants it but how many of us are willing and able to give it in a healthy way?
Have the pressures and realities of careers, cost of living crisis, and kids, shifted our perspectives on what's important in a life partner and what we value?
Has social media tainted our view and whole belief system on what love actually is, rather than what we think it's supposed to look like to others?
What does love TRULY mean in 2024/2025? And why is it so damn hard to find for so many of us right now?!
On this weeks episode, host Jennie is joined by Dating and Relationship coach and expert, and Author of "Love is Coming", Persia Lawson. Persia helps answer these questions and more!
Jennie and Persia go very deep on how childhood traumas and our own parents relationship carve the neuro pathways which determine who we choose as partners and the terrible behaviours and abuses we will accept. They talk about the impacts that dating apps, social media and the socio-economic changes and pressures have on how we now view and approach love, and provide tools and tactics on how to change the dating and relationship habits that don't serve you.
This is a raw, real and painfully honest conversation about why we are so bad at love, and where and how you can begin changing your love course in 2025!

As women, our bodies drastically change several times throughout the course of our lives; puberty, pregnancy, post-pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause. Many of us have a challenging relationship with our bodies and body image at the best of times. But these times in our life can make dressing our bodies especially daunting...sometimes even soul destroying. It doesn't help that each designer and brand seems to have sizing that doesn't match up ( a size 12 in one shop, could be a size 14 in another), and that the changing rooms are built like small sweaty torture chambers with lighting that would make the most beautiful woman in the world recoil. Shopping and and dressing our body shapes, is, for the most part, exhausting and erodes self confidence. For some, the solution is simple - hire a stylist and personal shopper! But of course, for the majority of us, this is a luxury we simply cannot afford.
Joining host Jennie on todays episode is Anna Berkeley. She has worked in the fashion industry for 30 years. She was a buyer for Prada, Margaret Howell and Selfridges. For the last 17 years she has worked as a private stylist and body shape expert. Utilizing her in depth experience and understanding of the changing female body, Anna has identified and created the solution for women who struggle with understanding their body shape and how to dress it. She has created the ThinkShape App. It uses body mapping techniques and analysis to help users understand their bodies and what looks good on them without the expense of a personal stylist and appointment. Anna says her mission is to take the anxiety out of choosing clothes by teaching women everything she has learned over many years of styling. Her dream is for women to accept, embrace and honour their beautiful bodies whilst truly understanding what works best for them.

Everyone has a story.
Some stories are filled with joyous childhood moments, teenage achievements and memories of fun family holidays. And some stories are coloured with dark family secrets, abuse and generational traumas. And some stories are a mix of both. Regardless of where your story falls on this spectrum, we all have one thing in common.... our future story. The story that lays ahead of us that has yet to be written and told. And whilst your childhood and past may have been out of your control, your future is yours to create.
Someone who has taken her story of pain and trauma and turned it into a future filled with purpose is this weeks guest Dani Wallace. She is a Global Public Speaking Coach and Founder of the Fly Anyway Foundation and the Big Festoon. For the first time publicly, Dani joins host Jennie, to share her story of generational trauma and domestic violence and talk about how her past has driven her towards change and purpose. Dani is a captivating speaker and her story will resonate with so many. This episode is not to be missed!

So you've survived your dysfunctional childhood with your toxic mom or dad. Congratulations! But now, you're an adult (perhaps with your own children and partner), and you've decided to go no contact, or have set hard lined boundaries with that toxic parent. What can you expect from that toxic parent as a response? What can you expect from other family members who enable that toxic parent or serve as their "flying monkey's"? OR perhaps you are parallel parenting (as co parenting is an impossibility) with a toxic or personality disordered ex. Do you know how this person is impacting the growth and development of your child(ren)? Growing up with a toxic or personality disordered parent can have massive long term and lasting implications and can have massive impacts on your own romantic and familial relationships, as well as your mental health and self esteem. Do you know how to mitigate the risks of this with your child(ren)?
Joining host Jennie on today's episode is UKs top mental health advocate and author of "It's Them Not You: How to Break Free from Toxic Parents and Reclaim Your Story", Josh Connolly. Together, they candidly discuss the very complex and challenging world of toxic parents and sharing tips and tactics on how to not only navigate it as the adult child of one, but also as the parallel parent of one.
Unless you've lived it or are currently living through it, you just DON'T GET IT. Josh and his active work in this space makes you feel seen and heard. Both Jennie and Josh provide the listeners with a sense of understanding through shared experience. If this was/ is your childhood or parenthood experience, this episode is a MUST LISTEN!

1 in 3 girls don't feel prepared for their first period
2 in 5 girls have been shamed or teased because of their period
85% of girls have tried to hide the fact they are on their period
50% of girls don't know what's happening to their bodies when they get their period
60% of girls feel scared and embarrassed when they get their period
81% of women feel concerns around their periods are not taken seriously
Think back to the moment when you first started your period, or learned a bit about puberty and how babies are made. For most of us, these were tough years filled with confusion, angst, feelings of discomfort, nervousness... but also, excitement for what's to come. Whilst we were provided with some education in school and maybe the occasional home about what to expect, unfortunately, for most of us, this time was not met with an abundance of information and facts, so we were ill prepared and left to navigate this on our own.
Today, whilst puberty and menstruation and sex are taught in schools to some degree, kids also have the internet. They have iphones, ipads and devices that parents have given them, where, with the stroke of a key, they can find images, videos (many pornographic in nature) and information (or misinformation) on anything and everything related to puberty and sex. Something we didn't have, or if we did, was extremely limited in comparison to today. There are HUGE risks associated with this that parents may not be wise to.
On todays episode, host Jennie is joined by Libby Tanswell-Gidney. She is the 22 year old Founder of Ove Care, which is an age appropriate App providing children of all ages with information on puberty and menstruation. Jennie and Libby not only dive into the features and functionality of the Ove Care app, but the ever growing NEED for it in todays online climate. They talk about issues surrounding misinformation and accessibility to dangerous content online, the importance of both girls and BOYS understanding menstruation, fertility and the female body and how parents can utilise the app as a tool to navigate this complex time in their child's life and development.
This episode is a MUST listen for parents with pre teen children - boys and girls!

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 6 people globally are affected by infertility.
Since the 1970's, 8 million babies have been born through medical/fertility intervention.
The requirement for fertility treatment is on the rise. And it's not just due to fertility issues with heterosexual couples, rather, in recent years, there has been a steady increase in single people and same-sex couples building and expanding their families through fertility treatment. Regardless of your reasoning for requiring it, fertility treatments are costly, time consuming and physically and emotionally taxing. In addition to the personal challenges that we face during fertility treatment, shockingly 40+ years on, there are STILL societal challenges that many people face; causing intense feelings of shame, guilt and embarrassment.
Joining host Jennie on today's episode is Natalie Silverman. She is the coFounder of 'Fertility Matters at Work' and the creator and host of ' The Fertility Podcast' which is in its 10th year! Together, Jennie and Natalie tackle many of the taboos still surrounding fertility treatment, including why we still associate it with women only, when there is an equal split of men and women who face fertility challenges/infertility. Both Natalie and Jennie share their own experiences with fertility treatments and the challenges they face(d) and tackle the current lag in workplace understanding and support and the ways in which Fertility Matters at Work are helping companies and organizations catch up in terms of policy creation and implementation.

Confidence and Self Esteem, whilst are crucial components to achieving and feeling happiness, often get over looked in terms of what we teach our children in schools and in the home. We don't tend to focus on HOW to develop confidence and self esteem, rather we mostly assume one should just HAVE it. As a result, many of us grow into people pleasers, or focus on others needs above our own. Which causes deep rooted feelings of loneliness, loss, and uncertainty; unsure of who we truly are and what makes up the essence of us.
A lack of or low self esteem is a significant developmental problem for kids currently.
According to a recent study, in the US, 80% of kids entering year 1 at school score high on self esteem inventory. By year 5 that starts to decrease significantly down to only 20% of kids scoring high on self esteem and by high school graduation, that number plummets to a mere 5% of kids leaving high school with any semblance of confidence or self esteem.
On todays episode, host Jennie is joined by Holly Matthews. She is the founder of the award winning self development brand "The Happy Me Project" and best selling author of "The Happy Me Project: The No Nonsense Guide to Self Belief". Together, they tackle the hard questions of what is contributing to the plummet in children's self esteem, who is responsible for ensuring our kids are taught how to cultivate their confidence and self esteem, and why it is VITAL to our well being and personhood.
We are living in a world where false confidence rules and self esteem is virtually non existent. Jennie and Holly bring a no nonsense and real conversation about where we are going wrong with our kids and why we have generations of adults faking their confidence.

The word 'narcissist' is often times over used these days. It's often used to describe ex's who are more than likely just incredibly selfish and ego-centric people. But, what if you are in a relationship with a true clinical Narcissist and/or Personality Disordered person. What if you are truly in the throws of a real trauma bond and an emotionally/psychologically/physically/sexually/and or financially abusive relationship. Would you be able to recognise it? And, if you did recognise it, would you be able to escape it and truly heal from it?
In the UK, according to a recent study conducted by Refuge:
The police receive a domestic abuse related call every 30 seconds1 in 4 women in the UK will experience some form of domestic abuse in her lifetimeOn average, 1 woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every 5 days in the UK3 women a week die by suicide as a result of domestic abuseIt takes, on average, 7 attempts before a woman is able to leave her abuser for goodJoining host Jennie in today's episode is Dr. Nae (Nadine Macaluso). According to a recent UK Study, 59% of girls and young women aged 13-21 have faced some form of sexual harassment at school or college in the past 12 months. 30% of 16 -18 year old girls say they have experienced unwanted sexually touching by boys at school. Nearly 71% of all 16-18 year old (boys and girls) say they hear sexual name calling towards girls, such as slut and slag, at school on a daily basis. 90% of girls and 50% of boys in secondary school have been sexually harassed by being sent explicit/pornographic pictures and videos to their devices.
These stats are just the stats on our children.
1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted/raped in their lifetime. A mere 2 in 100 rapes that are reported will result in a conviction - and 4 out 5 rapes go UNREPORTED; leaving a massive amount of rapists (men) to roam our streets and rape freely .

Many of us grow up wondering who we will fall in love with and marry and the children we may have. But nobody grows up dreaming about having a smooth divorce, parenting alone, having a slick divorce attorney, fleeing an abusive marriage, being a step parent or sharing your kids with your ex's new spouse. This is a far cry from what we envision for ourselves when we are young. For some this is your reality, For others, their inevitable futures.
Many things can happen before, during and after divorce. For a small few, it's amicable; co-parenting works and you can both agree you weren't met to be married, but can be friends. For the rest, divorce and what comes after it is not just riddled with complexities, challenges and heartbreak, but in some cases, presents new ways your ex can abuse you (and in some cases, your kids as well).
In today's episode, host Jennie, is joined by world leading Divorce Coach and Author Sara Davison. She is a global media commentator on breakups, divorce and domestic abuse. Sara launched Breakup and Divorce Coach Practitioner Accreditation Programmes in 2018 and has founded the International Divorce Coach Centre of Excellence, which now has a coaching community of over 600 coaches spanning across 26 countries and 5 continents.
The inspiration behind Sara finding her niche in Divorce Coaching, is her own divorce and the trauma that ensued. Sara has turned her tumultuous experience with her own divorce into supporting thousands of others through theirs and equipping them with the tools to not just survive leaving their high conflict ex, but thrive.
Sara and Jennie speak candidly about the harsh realities of the family court system, and what to expect from your "high conflict"/abusive ex's behaviour before, during and after divorce. If you or someone you know are about to embark on the battle of your life, this episode is a must listen!

1 in 10 children in the UK experience sexual abuse.*500,000 children are estimated to be sexually abused in any given year in the UK***National Crime Agency**Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual AbuseThis weeks episode, host Jennie is joined by Jeremy Indika. Jeremy Indika is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. His abuse started at age 8. His abuser was a trusted 35 year old male family friend, more specifically, his fathers friend and colleague. Like most paedophiles, Jeremy's abuser hid in plain sight in a profession that provided him access, and that deemed him caring and trustworthy; a nurse at the hospital his father worked in as a doctor. Jeremy was 27 years old when he finally came to terms with his childhood sexual abuse and trauma. And he decided to turn his trauma into something positive. He is a very active Child Abuse Prevention Advocate and is the Founder of 'Something to Say'.
Not only does Jeremy share his story on this weeks episode, but Jennie and Jeremy, have a very real, very honest and open (and uncomfortable) conversation about many of the contributing factors that increase your child's exposure and risk to being sexually abused/exploited, including internet access, device use, social circle engagement. They also dive into the role mainstream pornography has taken in increasing the instances of paedophilia and sexual abuse, and our responsibilities as parents and a collective society to mitigate the risks to our kids.
With the statics and instances of child sexual abuse on the rise, we have a duty of care to be talking openly about this. Saying it out loud is the first step in tackling and eradicating this (or at the very least, stopping the rise, in its tracks). It's ugly and it's uncomfortable, but we must have the bravery and courage to call this increasing issue out...our children's lives depend on it.

What do you see when you hear the word ' POVERTY'? A war torn country? Starving, unclothed children on the other side of the world?
In Manchester, UK alone, nearly half of children under 15 years old are living in poverty. Read that again.
We need to really look no further than our next door neighbours to see what poverty looks like and means here in the UK. And most of us have no idea that this a very real reality. We're not talking about kids whose parents can't afford the latest NIKE trainer or summer holiday. We're talking about parents who have to make the decision between feeding their kids at all, or keeping the heating on. Some of the families living in poverty, are generational; passing down substance abuse issues and, general parental neglect, where physical/sexual/emotional abuse is a large part of their family dynamics. But some are people who fell on hard times, in a challenging economy, and simply can't fight their way out without the support of others.
Regardless, of how poverty entered into their lives, we cannot ignore that half of children in Manchester alone, are falling through the proverbial cracks. And without the support of organizations such as 'Manchester Youth Zone' and people like our guest today, Heather Etheridge, they will be lost in the ether. On this weeks episode, host Jennie and guest Heather Etheridge, CEO of Manchester Youth Zone, talk about what poverty today actually looks like in the UK; how it it impacts the children in its clutches, the families and the community, long term. Heather candidly talks about her own experiences growing up in a household of abuse and neglect and her own struggles that resulted, and how it connects her to the kids of and her work at MYZ. The work she is doing and the spaces that MYZ are providing to these kids and their families, are not just paramount to their development, but to their SURVIVAL.

When you leave an ex or a marriage that is toxic and abusive, your hell doesn't come to an end if you share children. The next leg of that journey is just beginning. If your ex is toxic, that's one thing, but if you're navigating parenting with someone who also has personality disorders ie: clinical narcissism, borderline personality disorder, etc, it truly is a soul destroying combination. BUT it's not hopeless. There are tools, tricks and, as today's guest describes them, "rules", you can follow to help mitigate some of the negative implications of that ex's behaviour on you and your children. Melissa Porter is the author of 'Mastering the Single Parent Game' and is a qualified Counsellor and Life Coach. After the ending of her marriage and through her experience navigating the dark waters of parallel parenting with a toxic ex, she found her new purpose in helping others through this shared experience. Her book is concise and to the point! And that is exactly how the conversation goes between Melissa and host Jennie on today's episode! We dive into not just tools and rules on parallel/single parenting, but also what to expect from the family court system and the friends and foes around you. If you are thinking about divorce, going through it or coming out the other side and in the throws of co/parallel parenting, this episode is a MUST listen!

Belonging, fitting in, being liked and frenemies. These are the trappings of many girls/women social and friendship groups not just in childhood, but well into adulthood as well. And for many, as you enter parenthood, also the dynamics at the school gates with other parents. This weeks episode, host Jennie, is joined by Comedian, Actor and Writer, Kate-Lois Elliott. Drawing upon her own mothers' experience growing up in a Christian Cult, Kate-Lois identified some glaring similarities between her mums experience in a cult and navigating female friendships from childhood through to adulthood and has channelled that into her comedy acts. Jennie and Kate-Lois talk about how these kinds of group dynamics, specifically amongst girls/women, are toxic and detrimental...but also find the humour in the ridiculousness of it all.
