  • Episode Summary: Welcome to Oregon, the magic carpet, and our 24-hour challenge from week 21 on the PCT. In this episode of YWIB, we lasso 3 other hikers into our 24-hours of straight hiking from Shelter Cover Resort to…somewhere. At some point, we lose 2 folks to sleepiness, see a sasquatch/Jesus burn image, just about die from mosquitoes, and then FINALLY make it to 24 hours. Basecamp loses her wedding band, we spend 3 days in Sisters, resting…and then we begin our road walk around the Lionshead closure.

  • Episode Summary: Inspiration. Inspiration is the first step towards action. Before we hiked the PCT in 2022, we were inspired to hike it, not only from online sources, but more importantly by hikers who took the time to tell their long-form stories, in books. Keith “Fozzie” Foskett wrote one of two books which gave Basecamp and me the final push we needed to commit to the PCT. Years later, here we are sitting down to chat with the author of The Last Englishman. Fozzie shares some of his highs and lows from an impressive thru-hiking career, covers topics from his favorite U.S. breakfast, a health scare on the CDT, struggling with depression, and even his ghostly experience on the PCT. This is less an interview and more catching up between old friends at a cozy pub. Listen in and share this time with us.

We wanted to share Fozzie’s thru-hiking resume, and thebooks he’s published to give you an idea of just how much this guy has done. He’s a TRUE dromomaniac.

Trails: El Camino de Santiago (the Camino de Francais route) in 2001, 2016 and 2019. El Camino de Santiago (the Via Podensis route) in 2001, and 2016. The Pacific Crest Trail in 2010. The Appalachian Trail in 2012. 500-miles on the CDT in 2015. Across Scotland in 2016 (600 miles). The following national trails in the UK: The South Downs Way (100-miles) at least 12 times. The North Downs Way (140-miles) 3 times. The Ridgeway (85-miles). The West Highland Way. The Cape Wrath Trail . . . and a lot of day walks!

  • Episode Summary: Today’s episode of YWIB is brought to you by…mosquitos…lots and lot of em’. But seriously this week 20 on the PCT was an annoying, nagging stretch filled with the little bloodsuckers. But there’s always a silver lining, and that silver lining was all the resort hopping we were doing, the epic views from the lip of Crater Lake, and the fact that we met both Devil Fish, and who’d become a life friend, Songbird. The week ends with our setup for a 24-hr challenge. Lastly, we wrap up with an environmental corner focusing on some weird stuff happening on the Pacific Coast of the United States. What’s happening to the wildlife, and why is it happening? Listen in to find out more.

  • Episode Summary: Boobs. This episode is for everyone, but especially for folks…who have boobs- that’s female, male, or anyone else who may have a curvy figure. Sarah Berkeley noticed there was a need in the outdoor industry for backpacks that fit the curvy physique, a problem she herself struggled with while hiking the PCT. Embracing her pioneer spirit, she decided to do something about it. Thus, Symbiosis Gear was born. Symbiosis creates backpacks for anyone to use, but packs that most definitely accommodate a bit of extra curve. In this episode of YWIB, we talk with Sarah through her process of hiking and filling the niche to create “backpacks for people with boobs.” We also discuss tariffs, and how they may have affected some of your favorite outdoor cottage companies. Oh yes, and there was definitely mention of simultaneous couples’ trail poops. Enjoy! !

  • Episode Summary: In this episode we cover our Week 19 on the PCT where Amber (Basecamp's sister) comes to join us for a few days! Seiad Valley was a tough climb to manage so we should have chugged chocolate milk. But, we had Asland in our near horizon...which meant food. Zeroes in Ashland with Amber & Ryan (her hubby) refilled our cup, and seeing Amber on trail was a true inspiration for us. She killed 20+ miles and even lugged an AeroPress coffee maker with her alongside a 2-3 person tent (by herself). She passed out on a table of the Hyatt Lake Resort from exhaustion, and then Marie was stricken with some unknown illness which knocked her out too.

  • In this week's [Reprise] episode, we cover our 2-part series, "Water Is Life" with 2 representatives from Sawyer and CNOC, those widely popular names in the backpacking/thru-hiking community that have, since the original recordings in 2024, created a collaboration line of products (see that in the cover photo). It was only a matter of time, right? Katie Houston, of Sawyer...and someone who loves Dungeons & Dragons more than we knew, covers all the ins and outs of Sawyer filter use/care, healthy-alternative bug sprays, and tells us a bit about why we, as hikers, sometimes suck at treating our water filters & bladders well. Rebecca Booroojian, of CNOC, then speaks a bit to our favorite, durable water bladders, what they are made of, and how they are transitioning away from PFAS (those nasty forever chemicals). Rebecca is a font of knowledge, and we think you'll love what she has to say. Also, did you know that CNOC is owned by Minimal Gear, which is also the lovely owner of Diorite? Diorite Gear makes trekking poles. The poles are fantastic! They make plenty of other goodies. Enjoy, and Happy Trails!

  • Episode Summary: In this episode we cover our Week 18 on the PCT where we get an older lady riled up because of our wonky Garmin, meet Dickhead Steve, spend time in Etna with a South African couple, hike through some of the more stunning mountains of the PCT (Trinity Alps), suck it up while hiking in the rain for 3 days (obviously we have not done the AT yet), and set ourselves up for success to have a milkshake breakfast in Seiad Valley. Additionally, if you’ve read his far, lucky you! Sawyer, this episode’s sponsor, is giving away a care package to the 1st person who listens to the episode and reaches out. Listen in to figure out how! Lastly, we cover a brief Environmental Corner segment about litter and trash on trail, and how it becomes other chemicals/compounds later on. • Episode Summary: In this episode we cover that oh-so-lovely strip of the PCT known as the Hat Rim Trail. A hiker café awaited us before starting, but then the brutal heat was a poor hiking companion for Basecamp. Oh, we met Jupiter and didn’t even know it at first! A magical trail angel, Chris Hyde, treated us like royalty from Gondor, Deuces wore tailor-made custom-fitted cutoff jean shorts, we skipped Burney Falls to eat ice cream and order Jolly Gear matching shirts, two bucks ate our pee, Basecamp’s friends hosted us, and we took a poorly planned zero in Dunsmuir, which we would probably avoid over heading into Shasta! We wrap up in our Environmental Corner segment with my (Yeti) covering the findings from my capstone project (thesis)about trash on trail. I found a lot…..

  • Episode Summary: In this episode we talk through our first hiking-related book review of Glen Van Peski's work, take less. do more. SURPRISING LIFE LESSONS IN GENEROSITY, GRATITUDE, AND CURIOSITY FROM AN ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKER.

For almost 2 hours, we were lucky enough to have Glen on our show to cover a few of his anecdotes from the ultralight backpacking universe, but also some more introspective insights on life, having gratitude and giving to others, while also prioritizing the needs of our loved ones and ourselves. Glen has quite the tale to tell, including how to better stay connected to those you've met/think about often, his stunning wife, living a minimalist lifestyle, and his harrowing friend that saved Glen's life. We'd love to have him back for a part 2 to cover more of his ultralight hacks, but until then, here's enough content to wet your whistle!

  • In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking. we cover week 16 on the Pacific Crest Trail where we FINALLY hit the midpoint of the PCT, that's 2653/2 = 1326.5. Most of the hiking felt like it was in burn zones, but there was still greenery out there, somewhere, over yonder. Yeti picks up a baby squirrel and skips lunch before a massive climb and just about crashes, then chugs teriyaki sauce. We do some early morning hiking through Lassen Volcanic NP and then barely make it to the Hat Creek RV Park for some cold drinks and snacks before it rains, go figure. Oh, and Yeti went fishing for bears! In our Environmental Corner we discuss gray/grey wolves (Canus lupus) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 alongside what our current administration is looking to change about it. And on a happier note, we finish with a squeaky clean, hot off the recording studio song from The Fire Once Lost: Someone Else Just For You. Give it a listen!!!

  • In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking. we cover week 15 on the Pacific Crest Trail which takes us from the Desolation Wilderness to somewhere near Mt. Etna alongside Audible and Frenchy. Yeti almost went hypothermic AFTER becoming sick from bad cheese, the rains pour for an entire day, we spend a zero in Reno at a casino (not gambling) with Basecamp's aunt/uncle, and hop back on trail into the great blue yonder. We wrap up with our environmental corner where we discuss wolves! Specifically, we talk about why gray wolves are important for healthy ecosystem maintenance and why CO (following Yellowstone in WY) would benefit from their establishment despite strong opposition.

  • In this episode we cover week 14 on the Pacific Crest Trail which takes us from Kennedy Meadows North, through Carson and Ebbett's Pass, into the adorable and strange Markleeville, and finally into the Desolation Wilderness where we met one of our BIGGEST listeners, Tahoe Dynamite! We discuss some of our fondest memories with our dear friend, Bigfoot, and his unorthodox use of Ziploc baggies. Lastly, we wrap up with our environmental corner (trying to be slightly non-political as possible, but it's pretty impossible right now) covering recently proposed EPA deregulations, what that could be mean for our environments, and an update on fired USDA employees heading back into the office/field!!!

  • Episode Summary: In this episode of YWIB we don't sit down, but rather stand, fireside, with our documentary Director, Riley Hanlon. They ask us about some of our motivations to do this Arizona Trail project (which started on 12/6), what drives us in this crazy hiking universe, and some of our greatest joys and fears. It's a great cozy listen. Too bad the embers left me with two holes in my jacket :(

  • In today's episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp we discuss feet...but more specifically what you put on them. A good pair of socks is no less important than a good pair of shoes for any hiker, backpacker, or thru-hiker. Hikers will wear two pair of socks to reduce friction and therefore blisters on the tootsies that take them a few miles or even thousands of miles. [Insert] Wrightsock - an American owned name that creates double-layered socks all sourced and crafted in the U.S. We sit down with Russ Coillot, the Wrightsock's man with a vision to spread the Wrightenberry (the family behind the socks) name to walkers, runners, and hikers alike. It's a fascinating story that began in 1948 and lead to Wrightsock being one of the major socks distributed at REI today. We sip on whiskey, talk shop, and just have a great time chatting with Russ to see how blisters are removed from the hiking equation. Listen in!

  • In this episode of YWIB we dig a bit into what a "hikerbox" actually is. We have some personal accounts from the hiker-Hollywood star Professor Carl, our good friend, Songbird, Cucumber, Bloom, and even cover some interesting findings from Reddit (yup). What's that white unnamed powder you might find? Expiration dates be damned, you won't find any of those! Listen in.
