  • In this week’s episode, Tracy speaks to Barrie Man from Genesis Fertilizers about “The Next Generation of Fertilizer Production in Canada.”

Did you know that despite the fact that urea is produced in Western Canada, farmers on the Canadian Prairies pay some of the highest urea fertilizer prices globally due to prices set at the NOLA port plus high freight costs?

Genesis Fertilizers is bringing forth a farmer-owned urea production facility based in Belle Plain, Saskatchewan, with a distribution network that would serve Western Canada.

In this opportunity, Barrie shares more about the plant, the plans, and the fact that farmers have the opportunity to invest to help get this project off the ground. Farmer investment is based on their fertilizer requirements, securing their future supply, and each farmer has the opportunity to receive financial distributions based on plant profits, offsetting the cost of fertilizer.

In this episode, Tracy and Barrie speak about:

The vision and “why” behind the project. Barrie shares how this plant will solve the current problems and frustrations farmers are having with fertilizer purchasing, access, and costs. This is going to be farmer-driven and farmer-funded. Barrie shares about additional investment partners and answers the question, “How does the farmer-owned model of Genesis Fertilizers create advantages for its shareholders compared to traditional fertilizer suppliers?" Barrie shares project timelines and a projected date for the start of the building process. Sustainability is top of mind these days. Barrie shares how Genesis Fertilizers is incorporating carbon capture technology and providing farmers with a low-carbon fertilizer option, which aligns with consumer and government priorities on sustainability.

    Sound interesting?

Don’t miss this episode where Tracy speaks to Barrie Mann about this innovative project's who, what, when, where, and why.

  • In today’s episode, Tracy chats with Terry Betker in this episode titled “Do Farm Founders Avoid Transition Planning?”

Is it finally time to address the elephant in the room?

The industry has encouraged farmers to create a transition plan for decades, yet little progress has been made. So, one needs to ask, do farmers purposefully avoid transition planning?

In this week’s episode, Tracy and Terry speak about:

If farmers know they need to do transition planning and plenty of information is available, why are they not doing it? Is it finally time to address the elephant in the room? Are farm founders purposefully avoiding this subject? Tracy and Terry open the cans of words and get to some real talk about transition. Tracy has also noticed that it tends to be the farmwife, farm mom, female farm founder who pushes the subject of transition planning. She asks Terry if he has observed this, and they chat about gender differences, concerns, and roles on the farm. She asks Terry what he has noticed in his over 30 years of experience working with farm families on transition. Why do farmers avoid transition planning? What are ways to help farmers want to make this transition before it’s too little too late?

Tracy and Terry discuss matters in this episode that are rarely discussed…the humanness, immortality, and conflicting desires of the farm founder.

If you are looking for a deep, meaningful, honest conversation on transition planning, you will want to tune into this episode.

  • In this week’s episode, “Increase Your Resiliency: Change Your Life And Farming Operation, ” Tracy speaks to John Sachse about increasing resiliency to change your life, relationships, and farming endurance.

    Noun: Resiliency

Definition: The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

Well, goodness, as farmers, we could all use more resiliency on our journey, couldn’t we?

In this episode, that is precisely what Tracy and John speak about.

What is resiliency, and why should farmers care about it? John shares ways to increase resiliency. So often, we hear the typical self-care items like eating well, getting more rest, and so on. In this episode, John discusses goal-setting and how it applies to building resiliency. This is a GAME CHANGER!!! Are you feeling short on motivation these days? John shares sources of motivation behind goal-setting. He explains the three different types of goals and how each one contributes to the bigger picture. John shares his framework for goal setting. You won’t want to miss this.

This episode has the potential to change your life. Truly.

As business owners and farmers, we constantly have to overcome obstacles, and it takes an incredible amount of resiliency to keep going day to day, month to month, and year to year.

I loved the information and framework that John shared on goal setting and how this “mere” act of goal setting can genuinely change your life, your relationships, and your farm performance and help you reconnect with your motivation.

If you are looking for a bit of motivation and a way to put some pep back in your step…please don’t miss this episode.

  • DISCLAIMER - This information is not a substitute for mental health or medical treatment or services.

In this week’s episode, Tracy speaks to Amy Monea about all things mental health in this episode titled “Farmer Suicide: Let’s Talk About It.”

In this episode, Tracy and Amy discuss:

What is the difference between mental health and mental illness? Amy walks us through different mental health concerns, symptoms and illnesses. She shares about panic attacks, anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, suicide ideation, and more. Tracy asks Amy “What state of mental health are farmers usually in when they commit suicide…is it usually depression? Can the desire to commit suicide start suddenly or does it creep up on farmers?” What are the ways that we can recognize when people are just not ok? There is a common fear that if you bring it up to someone, you may offend them or even give them the idea to commit suicide. This is not true. Amy speaks to this. What can you say to someone is you are concerned about their mental health or if you are concern that they might be contemplating suicide? Now what if it’s ourself? What if we are in a dark place and contemplating if life is worth living…what do you do? Is there ways to prevent mental illness? Ways to take care of our mental health? If someone is struggling where do you go to get help?

This is an informative and deep conversation about mental health and spotting symptoms in ourselves and others.

We are a large community but a small community in reality. We need to look out for one another so if you are interested in learning more, you won’t want to miss this episode.
