Theranos was supposed to revolutionize and democratize healthcare. Elizabeth Holmes was supposed to be the next Steve Jobs. Investors were supposed to rake in millions of dollars. However, things don’t always work out the way they should, especially when that genius inventor is a fraud and that revolutionary company is a scam. Join us this week as we lay the groundwork for understanding Theranos, its young founder Elizabeth Holmes, and her flashy ex-business partner/ex-COO/ex-president/ex-boyfriend Sunny Balwani. This comes at a very relevant time--Elizabeth’s trial began on August 31, 2021. She could face up to 20 years in prison for the fraud.

  • Are some people just born bad? We’d like to think not, but serial pedophile and suspected cannibalistic killer Nathaniel Bar-Jonah seems to be just that--born bad. From very early on, he exhibited violent, disturbing, sexually-sadistic tendencies. Additionally, he lived in a time and place where he could virtually fly under the radar--free to rape and prey on children. Enabled by both his family and inept law enforcement, Nathaniel Bar-Jonah was the 375-pound boogie man that we all need to fear. Join us this week as we discuss this pile of garbage.

  • This is the second half of our 2-parter on Kip Kinkel. We recommend that you go back to episode #71 and listen to that before starting this one.

Before Columbine and Sandy Hook, there was Kip Kinkel--the moody, dark, gun-obsessed, trench-coat-wearing poster child for school shootings. That image of Kip has remained frozen in time: the dangerous child people point to as the reason some kids need to be locked up for life. Last episode, we discussed Kip’s childhood, his family, and the first part of his killing spree.

In Part 2, we discuss the rest of his spree and the aftermath of those few murderous days. We heavily borrow from Jennifer Schulberg’s amazing Huffington Post article: “Kip Kinkel Is Ready To Speak” for this episode.

  • This Father’s Day, we will be talking about a father that will be receiving no awards from us. Justin Ross Harris was a seemingly good father to his 22-month old son Cooper until June 18, 2014. Was Cooper’s death a terrible murder or a horrible accident? Though the jury decided one way, there is still some skepticism around that decision that we discuss this episode. Join Kevin, Amy, and special guest Carl, Amy’s dad this week. There are also some cameos in this episode of Abigail, our 11-week old kid. Sorry for that!

  • Thanks to our Aussie listener, Katrina, for requesting this case.

In western Australia during July of 2007, Chantelle McDougall and her daughter Leela went missing along with her cult leader boyfriend, Simon Kadwell/Gary Felton and their longtime friend, Tony Popic. They told numerous people that they were going to Brazil, but there is no record of them ever making it there. They simply vanished. We recount the bizarre details of this cult-y group and what happened before they disappeared to make sense of a mind-boggling case.

  • We are finally back after our month-long hiatus dealing with family stuff. We are pleased to announce that our baby Abigail is born and one month old now! Also, Amy’s dad is back home and on the mend after being in the hospital for a month, and our sweet dog Freki completed radiation for cancer recently. So, we definitely felt like we needed to put the podcast on the back-burner for a bit while we dealt with things, but we are back with a crazy one that’s been in the news recently again.

So for this week, we say Happy birthday to Abigail, our daughter, and dedicate this episode to her. Also, Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there. We celebrate these special days and our comeback with a doozy.

Imagine this: You give birth to 4 children and each, one by one, mysteriously die over a period of 10 years. Heart-breaking? Yes. Sketchy? Also yes. Today, we explore the curious case of Kathleen Folbigg, either a cold-blooded baby killer or the unluckiest woman on earth.

  • This is a mysterious one that was big in the news when it happened, and since, has been a tragic head-scratcher for arm-chair detectives, YouTubers, and Redditors. Kendrick Johnson (aka KJ), 17, was found dead in a mat at Lowndes High School in 2013. The circumstances of his death have been a source of conjecture, gossip, allegations, and lawsuits ever since. The Justice Department closed the case in June 2016, saying it could not meet the high legal threshold needed to file federal criminal charges. It would have needed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone had killed Johnson and was motivated by racial animus to do so.

For years, KJ’s family and many others demanded that the case be reopened; there were just too many unanswered questions, too many inconsistencies and coincidences for it to be just a simple accident. Just recently, on March 10th, 2021, The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office reopened this case.

  • Some say professional wrestling is fake--just a bunch of ‘roided out maniacs in tights acting out a play. They’re not totally wrong. While professional wrestling is scripted with story lines and predetermined winners and losers, the level of athleticism and commitment to the art is very real. Also, very real are the injuries sustained and the cumulative effects of years of head trauma, and concussions, which is the same with professional football players and boxers. These head injuries can lead to dangerous personality disorders and violence. Chris Benoit is a prime example of this. Join Kevin, Amy, and our good friend Mason, as we dish out the trash.

  • 300 Center Street in Findlay, Ohio was a house of horrors. Many people were in and out of there, but no tenant was as innocent or tragic as Vera Jo Reigle. Cheri Brooks, AKA Sugar Babe, was the ring-leader of the “Brooks Clan,” a trashy “Crip” family of misfits who wreaked havoc in this small town. Referred to as “Frequent Fliers” by 9-11 and the local police, it seems that many of the Brooks’ tragedies and maladies could have been avoided. Kevin and Amy watched the documentary Goodnight Sugar Babe so that you maybe don’t have to. It’s a sad, gross, heart-breaking story.
