  • “Broadway is my Beat” is a crime drama radio show that aired from 1949 to 1954. The series was created and produced by Elliott Lewis, who later became known as one of the best producers of radio drama. The show takes place in New York City and follows the cases of Detective Danny Clover, a hard-boiled detective who works the night shift on Broadway.

The show's signature opening, with the deep, distinctive voice of Martin Gabel, is one of the most memorable in radio history. "Broadway is my beat," Gabel intones, "from Times Square to Columbus Circle—the gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world."

Each episode features a new case, and listeners follow Detective Clover as he investigates murders, robberies, and other crimes that take place on the streets of New York. The show's dark, atmospheric tone, combined with its vivid portrayals of the city's gritty underworld, made it one of the most popular crime dramas of its time.

The show's success can also be attributed to the strong performances of its actors, including Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover, Charles Calvert as Sgt. Gino Tartaglia, and Jack Kruschen as Clover's boss, Lt. Muggavan. The series was also notable for its use of location recordings, which helped to create a sense of realism and immersion for listeners. Overall, “Broadway is my Beat” remains a beloved and influential series in the history of radio drama.
