Tato inteligentní, vzdělaná a průbojná mladá dáma se ještě během cesty stane námořním kadetem, i když tato vojenská funkce je určena jen pro mladé muže. Aby v emigraci přežila, musí se přizpůsobit. Stane se posluchačkou Námořního sboru poslední ruské eskadry v pevnosti Jabal-Kebir blízko Bizerty. Naučí se ještě arabsky a nářečí Tuaregů. Poté vystuduje matematickou fakultu na Karlově univerzitě v Praze a odjíždí do Paříže. Pracuje v různých profesích. Postupně se stane investičním bankéřkou a před začátkem Druhé světové války i poradkyní generálního guvernéra Tuniska.
Matka, Anna Karpovna, vdova po admirálovi, hraběnka, hovořící plynně několika jazyky, zůstává s roční Sašeňkou v náručí v rozervaném Rusku. Aby zachránila život sobě a své dceři, volí cestu změny jména a identity. Stává se negramotnou uklízečkou Ňurou, která mluví jen ukrajinsky. Myje nádobí a žijí v přístavku ke kotelně na dvoře jednoho velkého moskevského domu. Saša před začátkem války dostuduje zdravotní školu, prožívá svou první nenaplněnou lásku, dozvídá se své skutečné jméno a je mobilizována na frontu.
