Rachel Baldacchino discusses with Erica Giusta, ‘Decolonising the Maltese Mind: In Search of Identity’ by Charles Xuereb, the latter’s interesting perspective on colonialism, how colonialism affected politics, everyday life, and the community.
Erica Giusta is an architect and writer, Director of Innovation at architecture firm AP Valletta. She read for a MSc in Architecture for Sustainability at Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy), and holds a Post-Graduate Master in Media and Communication from the Il Sole24Ore Business School (Milan, Italy). In 2015, she joined AP Valletta, where she currently leads a portfolio of projects including research and development. Erica contributes regularly to a number of local and international publications, including Il Giornale dell’Architettura (IT), A10, New European Architecture (NL) and The Malta Artpaper, for which she writes about design, architecture and performative arts. She also recently co-authored the academic paper “Fort St. Angelo is not a billboard” for the Routledge Sustainable Heritage Handbook (UCL, 2022), investigating the effects of new media on the perception and conservation of heritage.

Rachel Baldacchino discusses with Loranne Vella the novel ‘Dal-Lejl Ġie Alla’ (Buġelli, 1984), the three generations mentioned, the old Maltese used that gave Vella the language to tackle issues that interest her, and the relationship between humankind and animals.
Loranne Vella lives in Brussels, is a Maltese writer, translator and performer. Between 2007 and 2009 she co-wrote the three volumes of ‘It-Triloġija tal-Fiddien’ with Simon Bartolo. Each won the National Book Prize. ‘Rokit’ (Merlin Publishers, 2017) was her first novel for adults and won the National Book Prize. Vella has also translated several books for children, two of which won the Terramaxka National Children’s Books Prize in 2015 and 2016. She then issued a collection of short stories, ‘mill-bieb ’il ġewwa’ (Ede Books, 2019 that was translated to English under the title ‘what will it take for me to leave’ (Praspar Press, 2021). Vella translated various children’s books, two of which won the Terramaxka National Children’s Books Prize in 2015 and 2016. Her latest work is the novel ‘Marta Marta’ (Ede Books, 2022).

Stella Borg Barthet hija professur fid-Dipartiment tal-Ingliż fl-Università ta’ Malta, fejn tagħti korsijiet fuq il-letteratura postkolonjali, u fuq il-fizzjoni Ingliża u Amerikana tas-sekli tmintax u dsatax. Rachel Baldacchino discusses with Stella Borg Barthet the novel ‘Requiem for a Malta Fascist (or The Interrogation)’ (Aquilina, 1980), the postcolonial element of this novel, Ebejer’s interrogation of the Maltese identity, and the importance of history especially for the colonised.
Stella Borg Barthet is Professor in the Department of English,University of Malta, where she teaches courses on postcolonial literature, and on 18th and 19th century English and American fiction. She convened the European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (EACLALS) conference in 2005 and was appointed adjudicator for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize the following year. Prof Borg Barthet has published many papers on postcolonial and contemporary migrant writing. Her current research interests include Mediterranean literature.

Rachel Baldacchino dialogues with Kurt Borg on Jean Paul Borg’s short-story collection Mhux Nies, they discuss the various and distinct characters of this collection, the continous battle between what makes us human or otherwise, and the relevance of this collection, six years after its publication.
Kurt Borg is a lecturer at the University of Malta. He obtained a doctorate in Philosophy and Humanistic Studies at the University of Staffordshire, with a research on ethics and the politics of narration of trauma in institutional contexts. Among other areas, he specialises in post-structuralist theory, particularly in Michel Foucalt’s and Judith Butler’s work, and uses their work to study phenomenons such as identity, social power and resistance. He published various chapters and articles in academics books and journals. He is fond of the essay genre, and currently is working on an anthology of essays on various themes, such as memory, vulnerability and gender.

The discussion revolves around the rhetoric of silence, the various types of silence, and the confessional element in this collection.
Maria Theuma is a researcher, writer and translator. She studied at the University of Malta and at Goldsmiths, University of London, and holds a doctorate in English. Her research interests include posthumanism, literary theory, comparative literature and visual culture. Recently, an academic writing of hers was published in ‘Journal of Posthumanism’(Transnational Press London, Londra) and on ‘Counter Text’ (Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh). Her creative work, both in Maltese and in English, appeared on various collaborative multimedia projects, and also on various online and printed platforms, such as ‘Scintillas: New Maltese Writing 1’ (Praspar Press, London). She wrote reviews on local art and theatre for ‘The Sunday Times of Malta’ and ‘Malta Today’, among others.

Rachel Baldacchino discusses with Tyrone Grima, the collection of short stories by Ramona Depares, ‘The Patient in Hospital Zero’ (Merlin Publishers, 2021), its air of tension and fear, its socio-political aspect, and the common elements it carries with ‘Frammenti’, the prize-winning novel of the National Book Prize.
Tyrone Grima is a lecturer in Performative Arts at MCAST, as well as director and playwright. He is very interested in queer literature and theatre, as well as in spirituality. His first literary work was his novella ‘Celibacy’. Together with Justin Schembri, Grima also wrote two collections of short stories: ‘Frekwenzi Ħiemda’ and ‘Frekwenzi Msikkta’, as also the queer novel ‘Bep’. His latest novel, ‘Frammenti’ won the National Book Prize.

Gattaldo studied Fine Art at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He worked as Art Director for advertising and photography throughout Europe and currently lives in London. Gattaldo is also a children’s author and illustrator, published in the UK and the US. The Maltese-language version of his book ‘Fearless, The Story of Daphne Caruana Galizia’ is published at the end of 2022 by Midsea Books.

In her first podcast, Rachel Baldacchino discusses with Clare Vasallo Vespers (Merlin Publishers, 2021), the English translated version of Trevor Żahra’s Vespri, the journey all stories went through while translating, the influence of the translator on the original work, and how translation is a fruit of collaboration between the author and the translator.
Clare Vassallo is Full Professor of Semiotics and Translation Studies in the Department of Translation Studies at the University of Malta. She teaches postgraduate courses in the Department of Translation Studies in Translation History and Contemporary Theory; Pragmatics, Semantics and Semiotics; and Literary Translation, among others.She has translated Pierre J. Mejlak, Trevor Żahra, Joe Friggieri, Antoinette Borg, Lara Calleja, Walid Nabhan, Norbert Bugeja and the national poet, Dun Karm Psaila from Maltese to English. She has also published academic papers internationally.

In this special episode, Luke Galea dialogues with the Poet Laureate Nadia Mifsud on Claudia Gauci’s Max-Xatt tat-Tamarisk (Kotba Calleja, 2022), the imagery this poetry collection evokes, the dialogues it provokes with the reader through all its titles presented as a question, and the way Gauci presents the woman.
Mifsud has published three poetry collections, a novel, Ir-rota daret dawra (kważi) sħiħa , Merlin Publishers, 2017), and a book of short stories, Żifna f'xifer irdum (Merlin Publishers, 2021), all of which bear out her recurring focus on the experience of womanhood, expressed in eloquent, but visceral, honesty. Her two poetry collections Kantuniera ’l Bogħod(Skarta, 2015) and Varjazzjonijiet tas-Skiet (Ede Books, 2021) were awarded the National Book Prize leading her to the title of Poet Laureate.

John A. Bonello discusses with Luke Galea Mark A. Fenech’s novel It-Tawmaturgu, which leads to a discussion on different genres of literature such as of fantasy and sci-fi, which are rare in Maltese literature, that however Maltese authors still venture into, leading them to create neologisms.
John A. Bonello won the National Book Prize six times. He is a writer from Ħad-Dingli who writes fanstasy, science fiction and investigative sotries for children, youths and adult readers. Among his most popular boks are the investigate series for children of Irvin Vella, the YA trilogy Il-Logħba tal-Allat and the duology for adults Unus Mundus. He visits schools frequently to meet students and talks to them on creative writing.

This podcast is a dialogue between Clare Azzopardi and Luke Galea on Nadia Mifsud’s collection of short stories żifna f’xifer irdum (Merlin Publishers, 2021), the different experience it allows to the reader from other collections, and the opportunity it delivers to look at life from different perspectives.
Clare Azzopardi wrote and translated various books for children, teenagers and adults. Among the most popular are Il-Każ (kważi) kollu tal-aħwa De Molizz and Jake Cassar’s series. Many of her novels were published in foreign journals and her collection of short stories Kulħadd ħalla isem warajh was published in Croatia, Hungary, Egypt and Slovenia. Her novel Castillo was published in Arabic and Italian. Its English translation titled The Lives and Deaths of K.Penza will be launched at the Malta Book Festival. This novel has also been adapted for theatre and television by Take Two.

Leanne Ellul discusses with Luke Galea on her chosen poetry anthology, Glen Calleja’s eki t’eki (Pubblikaturi AWL, 2002), the influence it left on her, her respect towards Calleja’s as a wordsmith, and how the sound of every poem becomes its essence.
Leanne Ellul writes poetry and prose, and has published works for both adults and children. She was named Best Emerging Author in the 2016 National Book Prize, and her works for children have garnered various Terramaxka awards. L-Inventarju tal-Kamra l-Kaħla, her first poetry collection, was published in 2020. Her latest published work is Bjuda, the fruit of an interdisciplinary project centered around the colour white. Ellul lectures in Maltese language and literature and is active in Inizjamed and HELA Foundation, two NGOs that have Maltese language and culture at their core.

Audrey Friggieri discusses the different forms of poetry in Mario Azzopardi’s anthology, Il-Fabbrikant tal-Marjunetti (Horizons, 2012). Luke and Audrey share thoughts on how rereading Azzopardi’s work always offers something new, and how Azzopardi focuses on the human condition and the search for meaning within it.
Audrey Friggieri was brought up in Luqa, next to a beautiful valley that is no longer. She published her first children’s book in 2013, which was shortlisted for the National Book Prize. She graduated as a teacher, and is finalizing her doctorate research on Maltese youth and education. In 2022, she authored Karolina, Ferdi u s-saħħar il-ħażin together with Clarissa Sammut Scerri, and Ana u Zak isalvaw il-pjaneta, two illustrated books for children published by Merlin Publishers.

Rita Saliba's poetry from her first collection Minn wara l-Ħġieġ (Klabb Kotba Maltin, 2022) are discussed in depth in this exchange between Luke Galea and the visual artist and writer Matthew Schembri, in which they reflect, among other things, on the appreciation and threats to our surroundings.
Matthew Schembri earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Digital Arts in 2017 and a Diploma in Maltese Literature in 2020. In 2016 he was invited as an artist-resident at the Virginia Centre for the Creative Arts (VCCA). In addition to Malta, some of his artworks were showcased in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and the United States. His debut novel, Stessi, won the Literary Contest of Novels for Youth and was published in 2018. In 2021 he published Ħassartek, an exercise in erasure poetry based on his first novel.

The actress and writer Simone Spiteri spoke to Luke Galea about the use of language and the search for roots in Alex Vella Gera's now decade old novel Is-Sriep Reġgħu saru Velenużi (Merlin Publishers, 2012), and how about her own work as a playwright.
Simone Spiteri is the Artistic Director of the theater company Dù Theater, which was founded in 2004, and twice awarded the Premju Francis Ebejer in 2009 and 2011. Her original work has been staged in several countries including Egypt, the US, England, Macedonia, Denmark and Spain. Her plays have been published in Żewġ Drammi: Repubblika Immakulata/Appuntamenti (2019) and she is also the author of the YA series of novels Il-Vinkulari, published by Merlin Publishers.

Luke Galea speaks to the artist, writer and bookbinder Glen Calleja about the relation between diction, universal imagery and stylistic consistency in Caldon Mercieca’s poetry collection Mogħlint, and also about Calleja’s own reflections on the book as a material object.
Glen Calleja is an artist primarily interested in poetry and the book as object - his artistic work often involves alternative book structures, found content and performative elements. His poetry books include eki t’eki (pubblikazzjoni awl, 2002), IR-RAĠEL (2010, 2012) and kull flgħaxija kif mal-għabex tnin u tmut saħħet il-jum(2014). Glen is co-founder of Studio Solipsis, home to Calleja’s bookbinding endeavor, Kotba Calleja.

She has translated several children's books into Maltese for Merlin Publishers, including 2019 National Book Prize winner Magni taż-Żmien (2018). Claudia is an active member of Inizjamed.
