  • Episode #209 – Two Awesome Lessons From The NCAA Wrestling Tournament

    · Marketing Secrets

#1 – Belief, #2 – How to make tiny adjustments so you win the match On this episode Russell talks about being at the NCAA Wrestling Tournament and how if you believe you can win, you can win, and how you can apply that to your business. He also talks about how you can take your mistakes and use them to make adjustments and improvements. Here are 3 other fun things you will hear on today’s episode: How belief is a major force in both wrestling and in business. Why Russell won’t critique someone sales funnel before they actually launch it. And how Clickfunnels wasn’t a winner until 6 or 7 adjustments were made. So listen below to hear how Russell used the lessons he learned from wrestling and applied them to his business and how you can too. ---Transcript--- Hey everybody, this is Russell Brunson and welcome to Marketing In Your Car. Hey everyone, it’s been a little while. I’ve been out traveling the world, gallivanting. I don’t know if that’s really even the right way to use that word, but it sounded cool today. I was in New York all last week, for the NCAA wrestling tournament with my dad. If you guys listen you probably knew that already, and it was great. I was planning on doing a bunch of podcasts from there, I actually saw one of my favorite marketing people in the world. Daegan Smith was there. We sat by each other for most tournaments. I was going to share some podcasts with you guys and him, but it just never happened. It was too crazy of a week, and too much wrestling, too much New Yorking, too much good stuff happening. Anyway, I’m back now to report and share with you guys some cool stuff. I hope that things are going well. We are a little over a week away from Funnel Hacking Live. We are completely sold out which is a nice feeling to have. So this week I gotta go and work on my presentations, I got some cool stuff I’m going to be sharing with you guys and with our community. I just wanted to make sure that it’s amazing. We were going to launch Funnel University last week, and then this week, and then decided to just kind of put it on hold until after the event and that way we can focus on making the event flawless. Then we will have Funnel University when we get back. So it’s all done and ready and it looks amazing. Our survey software is awesome, just lots of good things. So that is kind of the game plan from here. So I wanted to share with you guys probably what I think is the most important lesson I learned from the wrestling tournament this weekend, which will relate to you guys even if you’re not wrestling people, which you all should be. That’s an argument and a sales pitch for another day. So the NCAA wrestling tournament is amazing. IT’s more like the world championship, in fact, Coach Shultz, if you guys have seen Foxcatcher, Mark Shultz, who is the main character in that movie, was my wrestling coach at BYU, and I actually saw him this weekend which was really fun. But one thing that he said is that the NCAA wrestling tournament, because this style of wrestling is only done in America, he said it’s pretty much like the Olympics, the World Championship, which it is. IT’s kind of a big deal. It’s like the Super Bowl of our style of wrestling, which is cool. The best athletes from all the conferences around the country all come to this tournament and it’s a big deal. And it’s really big for wrestling, it’s on TV, which is the only we get on TV ever. So that’s pretty cool, it was just awesome. We’re in this state, we’re in Madison Square Garden, and the entire stadium is just filled with wrestling fans, which is cool. We had tickets we bought that were on the 12th row, it was right in the middle of Hawkeye fans, which if you know anything about wrestling, you know that Iowa Hawkeyes had a dynasty for the last two decades, three decades. Dan Gable was their coach and built this huge thing and so they’re fans are kind of insane. So we were stuck right  in the middle of all these Hawkeye fans that were just going nuts the whole time, which made it really fun too. What I wanted to share with you guys, at the NCAA wrestling tournament, for whatever reason, there are tons and tons of upsets, which are the fun ones. You get to see on the big monitor up top, “the number 14 seat’s wrestling the number 1 seat and somehow this dude wins.” How does the 14th seat, who’s got like whatever, 20-10 record, come in against an undefeated guy and beat him? How do these things happen? I was thinking about that and talking to Daegan a lot about it. One part of it is interesting is belief. It’s just weird, if you believe you can win, you can win. But it’s all mental, it’s all this belief. Do you believe you can actually do it? We watched this one guy, he was undefeated, hadn’t lost the entire season, or excuse me, he only once the entire season, and he lost to this guy who wasn’t that good, wasn’t ranked that high, and they met in the semi-finals and I was watching it and I was like, I think this guy’s got a shot of winning the underdog. The only reason why is on paper this guy should not even be close to the number one seat. It’s not even close, but because he beat him earlier in the year, which was kind of a fluke, he had this belief that, “I can beat him.” And because he had the belief he could do it, and sure enough he almost beat him, he lost, but it was crazy close. I have had matches in my career where I on paper should have lost to people, but because I had thought I could win, I had this belief for whatever reason, that guy looks weird or whatever, I had this belief that I just knew I could win. I was able to win. It was weird. I remember this one time I was wrestling, there was this guy in my Freestyle Greco club who I beat all the time, didn’t have much respect for him as wrestler. He wasn’t that good. One day I’m at this tournament, and I’m wrestling this other kid from some other state, the kid was good, we’re having a close match, and I’m actually losing going into the third period. My Freestyle Greco coach, I guess there’s not periods in Freestyle Greco, sorry it’s been a while. During one of the injury breaks or injury time or something, my coach came out and tried to tell me some stuff, he’s like, “Hey you need to work on your level change or whatever. By the way, Matt beat this kid  by 8 last match.” And instantly I was like, “Matt beat him by 8.” In my head all the sudden, this kid in my head was no good, and I had a perfect belief that I could beat him, and the last minute and half or whatever it was, I came out there and I tech-falled him. Because all the sudden…..it was the same match. I was struggling this whole match and suddenly my belief switched in my head to this kid should be really easy for me and then he was. There’s this weird thing about belief, it just beats all odds. If you believe you can win, you can win. I remember last year, NCAA tournament there was a kid that was number 4 team seat, and he became a national champ, and I posted on my Facebook wall and I forgot about it until yesterday, because yesterday it popped up saying, “last year here’s a memory you posted.” And the thing I posted was picture of the kid, and they’re interviewing him at the end. They said, “You were the 14th seat, how in the world did you come here and win this?” he said, “When I got here I looked at the brackets and I looked at all these people and I said, this is who I have to beat to be a national champ so I came and beat them.” It was just pure belief. Anyway, I thought that was important for all of you guys because it’s not skill, it’s not talent it’s not a record, it’s not anything, it’s belief. And that same thing is true in your business. I think the reason why I win a lot of times, is I just have such belief that what we’re doing is going to change the world, and it just does. So my first question for you is,  how much belief do you have?n Do have belief you can win. So that’s question number one, the second thing I want to bring up and this is the second half of the equation. Is being able to look at a loss and not looking at this devastating thing, but looking at it and trying to figure out what you need to change to win. Good example, in 174 lbs finals, which you guys should Google this match, it’s amazing. Beau Nichols, from Penn State, undefeated the whole year, was supposed to win the tournament, again this other kid, who is a true freshman from Oklahoma, this true freshman had lost to Beau Nichols three times during the year. In fact, in the big tens he got pinned by him. So he no shot of winning, no way he was going to win. He comes into this finals match and him and Beau Nichols lock up, he launches him, throws him to his back, almost pins him, gets a bunch of near-fall points and then Beau ends up trying to play catch up the entire wrestling match and ends up losing, just huge upset. True freshman wins this thing. Everyone’s going nuts. It was amazing. One of those matches, I stood up and I stood amongst all the Iowa guys who were not standing and I gave him a round of applause. To come back and to lose to this kid, the best kid arguably in the world right, and to have to lose to him three times this season, to come back and win, that’s huge. What is it? What causes that? I remember my junior year in high school, I worked hard all my sophomore that summer long, I had gone Freestyle and Greco and we worked all day long, I just knew my senior year, I would be state champ. Go out there, first match against a kid that had taken 2nd the year before, we go out there to wrestle and I had belief that I could win, but this kid was better than me. And he beat me. It was devastating for me. I knew I wasn’t going to be state champ that year, and I lost my very first match. My dad had recorded the match and then after the match, my dad was rewinding and watching it, rewinding and watching it. My ne

EZEKIEL 41:Yesterday we started Ezekiel’s account of his long vision about the future and ideal temple of God, and this is another vision that is referred to in the book of Revelation. The reason for this vision is given in chapter 43: Ez. 43:10 NLT “Son of man, describe to the people of Israel the Temple I have shown you, so they will be ashamed of all their sins. Let them study its plan, 11 and they will be ashamed of what they have done. ISAIAH 17:Yesterday we finished the two chapter oracle concerning Moab. It was really not so much a prophecy of condemnation, but a lament for the people. HEBREWS 11b:The Faith Chapter of Hebrews is an exposition of the verse quoted from Habbakuk 2: Heb. 10:38 NLT And my righteous ones will live by [fully believing in Me//faith].But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.” It is unfortunate that the King James Version of the first verse of Hebrews 11 doesn’t make good sense but is still so often quoted as the definition of faith. The KJV says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for …” But how can I use that idea of ‘substance’? This became the definition that is quoted, but no one can figure out what to do with it after quoting it. No one can— so to speak, put their finger on that ‘substance’. The Greek word translated as ‘substance’ can also be translated ‘confidence’. And using that word, our definition makes sense. We like to say that we’re “good without a god,” but the fact of the matter is that we’re not always very organized about it. One of the good things organized religion has introduced to the world is ways to encourage giving and volunteering to help those in need. Foundation Beyond Belief is a secular nonprofit organization that provides a similar structure to help those of us who have left religion or who never had religion in the first place when we want to give.Noelle George is the executive director of Foundation Beyond Belief and the former head of the Beyond Belief Network, Foundation Beyond Belief's program that supports secular volunteers across the country. She joins us this week to discuss the history of the organization, its various programs, and how people can contribute time, money, or word of mouth to Foundation Beyond Belief. She also talks about the matching grant that American Humanist Association is offering this month to support the Humanist Service Corps' work in Ghana.

  • Secular Humanism

    · 00:19:36 · Understanding World Religions

Our quote for today is from Simone Weil. He said, "Humanism was not wrong in thinking that truth, beauty, liberty, and equality are of infinite value, but in thinking that man can get them for himself without grace." In this podcast, we are making our way through Garry R. Morgan's book, "Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day." Our Understanding World Religions topic for today is, "Secular Humanism" Secular Humanism is not merely nontheistic. It is zealously antitheistic. Secular Humanists hold that belief in God is the greatest danger humanity faces, and human "salvation" requires total elimination of belief in the supernatural. So why include it in a book on world religions? Secular Humanism fits our working definition of religion as an organized system of beliefs that answers ultimate questions about life. It has councils and associations, conferences and workshops, and a statement of beliefs. As we've seen, many belief systems are not based on belief in or reliance on the supernatural. Theravada Buddhism, Jainism, and Confucianism, for instance, believe the answers come from within, not from any source beyond humanity. The inclusion of Secular Humanism is consistent, and besides, it would be strange to ignore a belief system that has the stated goal of eradicating the beliefs and practices described in every other chapter of this book. Secular Humanism's foundation is built on the philosophy of naturalism, or materialism: that the material universe (the natural world) is all that exists. This it shares with atheism, the belief that there is sufficient evidence to deny the existence of God and the supernatural. Agnostics, those who say there is insufficient evidence to know whether God (or the supernatural) exists, may also embrace Secular Humanism. But for Secular Humanists, atheism is just a beginning point. They have developed a complete worldview and value system built on naturalistic presuppositions. As an organized system it differs from secularism, a much broader term referring to the worldview of those who live as if God does not exist. This includes all the nonreligious, estimated by researcher David Barrett to exceed 20 percent of earth's population. Certainly, Secular Humanism influences secular beliefs, but it goes beyond passively ignoring God to actively building a lifestyle and worldview based on opposition to belief in God.

  • Letting Go of Limiting and Unhelpful Beliefs (Pod #268)

    · 01:05:31 · EFT/Tapping Q & A Podcast w/ Gene Monterastelli - Emotional Freedom Techniques

Support the podcast! We enter this world as a blank slate. With each new experience and relationship we begin to form a series of beliefs about the world and our place within it. These beliefs become the bedrock of our emotional experience because they determine our interpretation of everything that happens to us in life. This becomes problematic when the beliefs informing our experience are not useful or are outdated. For example, if I believe it is unsafe for me to be who I am called to be, I will live my life constantly feeling like an impostor because I am not being true to myself. At the 2017 Spring Energy Event I was given the opportunity to talk about how we form our beliefs and what to do when those beliefs become limiting and no longer serve us. In the talk I cover: How our beliefs are formed The eight operating principles I work from when working on changing or releasing limiting beliefs A simple process you can use to identify the beliefs holding you back and how to tap to transform them Operating principles: We always make the best choice possible based on the __ we have and the _________________ that we are in. The goal is to have well _________________ responses. We learn _________________ because it is fuel efficient. Fear is our _________________. Trauma is caused by events that are _________________, _________________, _________________, and in which we have a _________________. Our primary work is _________________ rules, patterns, and cause/effect relationships. We are notoriously bad _________________ to our own experience. As practitioner my goal is to be _________________. How To Identify The Belief Imagine taking the action Feel it in the body Ask it: What is it afraid of? What proof does it have this is true? Who will be disappointed if you let go of this belief? Who also holds that this belief is true? What goes wrong if you release this belief? How To Release The Belief Name the new belief you would like to have When I tap for this: I am not letting go of the people who gave it to me I am not saying they tried to hurt me I am not saying they are wrong for trying to give it to me I am not saying I am wrong for picking it up I am not saying it wasn't useful for them When tapping for this I am ...Picking up a new belief... ...That is helpful in the moment... ...I have the right to pick up the old belief in the future if I decide it is useful...

Here are some interesting things to look for in today’s episode: Why Russell’s 10 minutes explaining the one thing concept turned into 2 1/2 hours. How the one thing concept is similar to religion. And why finding out what the one thing in your business is will help make it successful. So listen below to hear why finding the one thing in your business is so important. ---Transcript--- Good morning everybody in Marketing In Your Car land. So glad to have you guys all here today. Heading in for an amazing day, I’m excited. I honestly, last night, had dreams all night about stuff in the Expert Secrets Event. It’s crazy. I wish that you guys all could have been there. In fact, it’s insane that you weren’t there. We’ve been hanging out now for 252 episodes, or 251 episodes, if you haven’t joined the Inner Circle and you weren’t here last weekend, seriously? Come on? What are you waiting for? Have I ever let you down? Come on, you guys. Anyway, the event was amazing, but the process, oh the process. I’m so excited about the process. I totally want to start doing high end events where people come in for 2 days or 3 days and we just take everyone through that process. I had multiple people afterwards tell me, “Man, everyone that comes into your world should go through this. Anyone who joins Inner Circle should go through this process first.” Because it helps to identify so much of what you’re actually doing and selling and how you’re positioning it. Oh, so many cool things. Anyway, today I’m excited because I’m going back through all the PowerPoint slides from the event, making tweaks and changes based on some of the stuff we discovered together as a group. Things that as I was teaching didn’t come out quite clear, or I hit road blocks. Or things from my stories that weren’t the right stories the first 2 or 3 times. Sometimes I tell a story…..I was like, “Huh, that story was completely inappropriate or weird or the wrong thing.” So just kind of re-factoring everything in the process. And I’m going to go through and record while it’s still the top of my mind. Re-record all the sections and that will help as the audio commentary as we go through and we start writing this new version of the book, which I’m so excited for. So that’s kind of what’s been going down over here, and that’s what I’m excited for today. I also have decade in a day so we also had a bunch of new Inner Circle members who came in. I think it’s 4 of them that we’ll be doing coaching sessions with this morning, which will be kind of cool. So for those who are wondering about the Inner Circle, it’s typically always sold out, but every once in a while there is a spot or two that open up. People who don’t renew or the people who don’t love money, I think. So anyway, for the most part those are always booked out but we did have a couple of slots open up, I think we might have one or two more for people who are trying to decide if they’re renewing or not. So if you’re interested, go run and go to Russellbrunson.com because there might be a little, small window where you can get one of the last one or two spots left, if you’re interested. With that said, I’m going to move back onto Expert Secrets. So I’m probably just going to, as I’m geeking out on this for the next while, share some things. I’ll share like last night when I couldn’t sleep because it was so, so, so excited. It comes back to a concept I talked about a lot. And it was something that in the event, I had planned maybe 10 minutes to talk about this concept and it ended up turning out to be over 2 ½ hours of us going really, really, really, really deep into it. And it was…..it opened up my eyes to really understand this whole thing. So let me step back. The concept that I’m talking about right now is the one thing. We’ve talked about this before. Any time you have to convince your prospects of more than one thing, your conversions will drop in half instantly. So you’ve got to pick one belief that you have to get them to believe. So everyone’s like, ‘What’s that belief? What should it be?” And for a long time I was like, “Just pick one thing.” But the more we thought about it, we started realizing the one thing, first off…….I wish you guys could read the whole book right now. I wish the book was done so I could read it right now. But it comes back to, to be successful first off, you can’t be selling, you can’t be trying to improve somebody. Nobody wants improvement. That is…..ambitious people want improvement, and the masses, 99% of the world are not ambitious. People have desire, but they don’t have ambition. So if you’re selling to ambitious, “Here’s how to improve your golf swing. Here’s how to make this thing better. Here’s how to improve something.” By default you will make less money. So a big part of the whole thing we talked about how to build a cult/ how to build a culture, I mean. It was all about one of the three steps of building a cult following is you have to have a new opportunity. That may be a whole other podcast for a whole other day, but assume that you’ve got a new opportunity that you’re selling. So they have this new opportunity, so you think about that opportunity. There is got to be one thing that people have to believe. If they believe that one thing then they have to accept your new opportunity. So you gotta think about it. What is that one thing that they have to believe in? If they believe that then they have no other alternate options except to give you money. And every business has this. Every new opportunity has this. So you gotta think through it. So some examples, I’ll step out of business just to give some practical real world examples, so I’m going to go to religion. Religion is probably the easiest place to really identify this. So let’s say, you are considering Christianity as your new opportunity. With Christianity there’s one belief you have to believe. It’s like if the Bible is true then Jesus Christ is our Savior, direct correlation. If you read the Bible and you’re like, “I believe with all my heart that this is true.” Then the only answer is that “Okay, Jesus Christ is my Savior.” That’s it, there’s no other if’s, and’s, or but’s. Okay, I look at, I’m a Mormon as all you guys know. Mormons are Christians and we believe in a book called the Book of Mormon. So if I read the Book of Mormon, if I believe that boo is true, that’s the one thing. IF I believe that thing is true then everything that Mormons believe, therefore I believe, because it’s the one thing. I now believe in Latter Day Prophets, I believe in Temple ordinances. Here’s all the things that Mormons believe. If you believe the Book of Mormon is true then you have to believe all these other things. Same thing is probably true in every religion. If you believe the Koran is true then this all the stuff you have to believe. So religion is very….you look at religion they are all tied to a one thing. What’s the one thing you believe? If you believe that then everything else is part of that belief patterns. So you gotta look at your business and your new opportunity you are providing people and there’s always the same thing. Like when we were launching Clickfunnels, if I could get people to believe that the only way their business could succeed is they have to build sales funnels inside of Clickfunnels. If I can get them to believe that there’s no other option. You have to give Russell all your money now, because he’s the only person now that provides that thing. Come back to religious. If I believe that Christ is the Savior, or if the Bible is true, then I believe that Christ is my Savior and I have to follow him because the only way to get salvation is through him. That’s what it comes down to. It’s almost like we have to figure out how to make that same statement for our business. If I can convince them that the only way for their business to survive is to create funnels through Clickfunnels is the one belief I have to get into the habit. And if they honestly believe that in the core of their body, then they know that the only way to business salvation is through Clickfunnels, is through what I’m offering. That’s it. So until you’ve identified that statement…….that has to be step number one. Because then when you start building the webinar, the whole event was about the webinar, everything else in the webinar is built around that. What are all the false belief patterns based on that new opportunity? And what is that thing? And how do we knock down those belief patterns? Everything else gets tied to that, but it all stems from this concept called the one thing. And the one thing is tied to a new opportunity, but what is that sentence? So I said it, it was supposed to be a 10 minute, I explained the one thing in 10 minutes, and everyone wrote what their belief was and they had to get people to convince. And everyone kept sharing with us and then kept coming back with headlines and I’m like, “No! I’m not looking for a headline here, you guys. We’re looking for….” We ended up developing this sentence and it was like, “If I can get them to believe ‘blank’..” and in that blank you put in what new opportunity is. “If I can get them to believe that the only way to make money online is by having sales funnels built inside of Clickfunnels.” There’s my sentence. If I can get them to believe that, then they’ll have to give me all their money because I am the salvation or success, or whatever you want to call it, could only come through that one path, that one vehicle, right. Because when

  • 153: 24 Ways to Live Beyond Labels

    · 00:36:48 · The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style

~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #153 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio ". . . for those of you who are tired of trying to squeeze into constrained categories, who long for integration and wholeness in everything you do, without limits on who you are or who you will become . . . it's time to move beyond labels." —Maureen Chiquet, author of Beyond the Label Labels by definition provide a boundary, an end, a predetermined area of where something does and does not exist. And while a label on our wine bottle that we have chosen to serve with dinner may reveal the year in which the grapes were harvested or where a particular item of clothing or an accessory was made ensuring us of what we choose to support regarding labor, these aforementioned labels are helpful, reassuring and welcoming, but contrarily, labels placed on people, individuals, women, men, different ethnicities, generations, are limiting. In many cases, labels for people have and do lead into stereotypes, all of which are reductive, oversimplified and purposely (by the one placing the stereotype on another) limiting on the group of focus. In all cases, as Maureen Chiquet, the former CEO of Chanel shares in her new book Beyond the Label, "The labels themselves make life more difficult." As a child when grand family-gathering food holidays would arrive on the calendar, it was always the women who were in the kitchen cooking the extravagant meal and after dinner, it was always the women who were in the kitchen cleaning up. I hated the assumption of these roles which nobody conferred with me about. Granted I was a young girl, and I did what I was told, and as a young girl, I didn't know why I felt this way, but as I grew up and still saw this pattern in some instances, I then knew why I had just grave reservations: I didn't want to be in either group, especially not the clean-up group as so much work and effort had gone into the meal. Was it the women's job to cater to the men who sat in the living room, laughing, chatting and sipping their coffee or evening drinks? There was no part of this assumption or label that appeared fair. Now some of the women may have sincerely wanted to be doing the cooking as well as the cleaning, but I know I was not the anomaly. Who wouldn't want to be fed and relax after the meal? I share this experience with you not to complain, I am adamant that while I love cooking, the clean-up task should at least be shared, especially if it is a dinner for two as a way of thanking the cook or providing more time to chat and unwind together, but to offer up the conversation about the roles we inhabit and why we do so. Often we step into roles not because we have an earnest desire to clean the kitchen, per say, but because we've seen others do it before us and that is "just the way it is done". If we constantly adhered to this way of living life, women would still be domestic property of their husbands with no means to be independent. Needless to say, roles should be questioned to determine who is benefiting and why such a role is being perpetuated. The labels and roles we embody throughout our lives should be in accordance with the individual, regardless of sex, regardless of social standing, regardless of . . . well, pretty much anything. It may seem safe to do what has been done before, but it is limiting, it is squashing of the incredible gifts each of us has to offer not only to the world and those we choose to share our lives with, but to our spirit and true contentment as we experience the life we have been given. Whether it's the assumption that the teaching profession is best suited for women because they are born nurturers (a false assumption, and a limiting label by the way for all the men who are innately nurturing as well) or the assumption that tall men with deep voices are better leaders (why? Because . . . they can sing bass and have to duck to get through the door? The last I checked, neither abilities were needed to lead successfully.), we reduce the potential to flourish and find the best fit for every individual when we place labels based on exterior appearances. As Maureen Chiquet points out immediately in her new memoir and life guide, she "hates labels and boxes".  And it was her fondness for the French culture that drew me further into her book as she shares in her introduction, "It wasn't just beauty that the French seemed to live for and breathe in, but a kind of freedom that emboldened me to radically extend the border of my more conservative Midwest childhood in the 1970s." Her curiosity is what opened the door to recognizing that the labels that were being placed on her, or she felt being placed on those around her were inaccurate and soul-depleting. And it was her curiosity that led her to achieve the life and professional success which she leads us through as readers. She listened to the voice within, she was fortunate to have parents who encouraged her curiosity and didn't limit her dreams, and she was courageous enough to do even when she didn't know what the outcome would be. https://youtu.be/gNp6ohq-9Sk Today I'd like to share with you 24 sage words of advice from Maureen Chiquet's new book, released last month as a means of encouraging us all to examine the labels we accept to be placed upon us and come to understand why so that we might let go of those that are limiting and remove all together labels or at least help to redefine or change the world's understanding of the possibilities of said labels that we may fall under at different periods of our lives. 1. Listen to your curiosities and follow where they lead you "It's often a matter of following the whispering intuitions and inkling that defy standard categories such as college major or job title . . . I do know the kinds of attitudes and sensibilities, the questions and the curiosities, that will lead you on paths to self-discovery, beyond recognized borders and conventions, and well beyond the labels that others want to use to define you." 2. Reclaim femininity on your own terms "Being a woman [is] not a handicap but an advantage, a source of strength." Simply by reading the word "femininity" we may have an idea of what the word entails, but we immediately limit in our minds what a woman is capable of being if we provide a definition beyond the actual definition "the quality of being female; womanliness", we limit what is acceptable for someone who is a female to do. In other words, there is no one way to be a woman. With every woman in the world, there is a different way to be, just as there are more than seven billion people in the world, there are seven billion different ways to be. Take a moment today, tomorrow or sometime soon to examine how you live your life that assumes behaviors and roles you partake in merely because you are female. Who set those rules? Why do you follow? Does it sit well with your being? Some women, no matter society's expectations will revel in wearing make-up and pearls, while others will be out on the lacrosse field at six in the morning training with their teammates forgetting entirely about wearing any sort of make-up. A woman is simply a woman for the sake of biology, that is all. Beyond that, reclaim your own definition. 3. Redefine how a leader leads "I started to understand that if women weren't rising to the top more often, it wasn't only because they weren't 'leaning in' or weren't just as ambitious as their male counterparts. It wasn't just because corporate policies didn't allow enough time for maternity leave or the flextime needed to raise families. These things were, and still are, crucial and must be addressed. But the underlying issue, the nut no one had cracked, was what kind of leadership we value and how we teach, assess, and promote 'good' leaders in all organizations —whether women or men." 4. If you feel something is missing, trust the observation of the void and look beyond "the world's obstacles, rigid structure and set definitions." To be able to look beyond, we must first look within. We must become so well in tune with ourselves that we know when something is not present and needs to be, even if we cannot put our finger on it at the moment. From my own experience, even at an early age, there were many instances, people, situations and ways of living that just didn't make sense, and so as I began to build my own life, I explored, I asked, I became more informed and I stepped out of what I had been introduced to by others and began introducing myself to ideas that were new to me until eventually I found what made far more sense disregarding whether others approved or not. 5. Follow Coco Chanel's approach to life: learn the rules, then step outside of them "Chanel seemed to break every rule by combining seemingly opposite elements and by elegantly subverting convention to create something breathtakingly timeless and fresh . . . a woman who refused to blindly accept the aesthetics of her time in order to invent her own." In the rhetorical writing class I teach, one of the first lessons I share is while there are many rhetorical tools an artist/writer/speaker/architect/musician can use, in order to use any one of them, they must first know the standard rules of grammar they are breaking. Therefore, when they choose to use the rhetorical tool, they know why they are breaking it and what effect they hope to provoke. 6. Savor life's beauty When we follow our curiosity, it is a striving toward creating a life that we want to dance with each and every day. And if we are lucky enough, when we are lucky enough, to cultivate this life, we don't want to rush, we don't want tomorrow to come today. We want to savor each and every day. In other words, "slow it down, relish it, take it in fully". 7. Become comfortable with a little discomfort Uncertainty or unhappiness. The two concepts were juxtaposed recently in an article I read, and the point was quickly absorbed. Are we willing to give up a little discomfort in not knowing how or when something we hope for, but deeply want, will occur in order that we may no longer be unhappy? Often we stay in circumstances, or remain under labels that do not fit us because it is what we know. And knowing is, for more than a few, far more comfortable than uncertainty. In the long run however, we only do ourselves a disservice and miss out on the beautiful life we could have led. 8. Let go of external definitions and lenses through which you have been defined and start from scratch. Ask why? "The Artist is no other than he who unlearns what he has learned, in order to know himself." —E.E. Cummings 9. Search until you are broken open similar to the relinquishing of a protective shell In coordination with #7 and #4, many times we do not know what we are missing or what we will find when we step into the unknown.  However, the protective shell we are under, that we think is offering us the best possible life, is actually the limitation, the barrier we need to step out from underneath if we are going to realize our own unique potential. It is easy to know and accept this life concept, but I sincerely recognize far harder to put into practice. But, if you are feeling squashed, and keep bumping into a wall that time and time again has demonstrated it is not going to move, try a different path, even if you don't know where it will lead. So long as you head out into the direction that speaks to your curiosities, trust that you are doing yourself a grand favor. 10. Refrain from following prescribed expectations and instead simply "be" and express yourself authentically (and allow others to do the same). Find your tribe. Search out people who sing the same song or at least applaud you for staying true to yourself. Along the way, you may have to let go of those who want you to stay in the lane they became accustomed to you traveling, but model by example and support everyone's mode of travel and path chosen to travel down. When we all become more accepting of different ways of living life, we free each other to step into a lane (or off into the open field) to be what comes most naturally and applaud the unique contributions we all can give. 11. Knowledge allows the magic to happen "Every discipline in the humanities —literature, history, art history, philosophy, or religious studies —teaches us how to question how we see and interpret the world and who we are as human beings." As someone with a bachelor of arts degree, I took classes in art history, communications, history, literature, dance, sociology and a few other arenas in the humanities family that each contributed in their own way to the journey I am on now. I may not have pursued a specific career in most of these fields, but as I examine the careers I am pursuing, all of these classes have offered skills, knowledge and aha moments that helped me connect the dots and have given me a deeper understanding of the world, and thus my journey within it. "[S]he who has the most information wins." —John D. Rockefeller Ultimately, knowledge can only open doors and the beauty is, it can never be taken away from you. Knowledge of the "why"s in the world, how certain religions came to be, why this war was fought and this right denied, etc. are all bits and pieces of a grand puzzle that will help you understand why the labels that may be given to you don't actually fit at all. Allow all that you know and wish to know, as you pursue it fervently to be the key to opening up doors that curiosity leads you to. 12. Focus more on how it will work out and what could go right, rather than getting caught up in the reasons why it cannot be fulfilled (life has a funny way of adhering to what we consume our minds with - self-fulfilling prophecies) "It a little bit like when you are skiing. If you begin to stare at all of the rocks, crevices, and obstacles, you're sure to hit one." 13. Take the first step even if the plan isn't complete "Sometimes, you have to take that first step without a fully formulated plan, follow your intuition, and be ready to go with the flow, just like plunging into oncoming traffic at L'Etoile." 14. Improvise regularly "Indeed, if you only memorize the score, you can be sure to hit the right notes, but will anyone remember your bland tune? The creative spark depends on patience, persistence, and practice, but you have to be willing to take risks, too. To improve requires having a sense of where you want to go, then letting that resonance emanate from deep within yourself, the place where love for your sole expression resides. " 15. Let go of fixed expectations  "Letting go of fixed expectations, or at least being willing to upend them for a time, allows the possibility for an act of creation to surprise us, to leave us dizzy with the excitement of discovering something new that, somehow, feels just right, as if we were waiting for it all along." 16. Seek out respect coupled with love "I had never felt love like that from any guy I had dated. It went beyond love; it was the purest form of respect." 17. Find a path that allows your "beauty", your real assets to be be utilized ". . . 'beauty' — my real assets (intelligence, character, judgment, and taste)" 18. Embrace challenging circumstances as they unearth the pearl of a life you truly wish to cultivate "Challenging circumstances and discomfort are often excellent teachers inasmuch as they require us to get closest to what we fundamentally care about." 19. Raw learning experiences exist everywhere in every stage of your journey "No opportunity is ever too small to show you what you can accomplish, and no boss is ever so mean that you can't learn something, even if it's only to show you how not to lead." 20. Empower people and you empower progress "People work harder and ultimately deliver better results when they feel empowered." 21. Be calm, confident, self-aware and clear about where you want to go in order to have success "Horses react to humans in a pure, intuitive way. 'They mirror how we show up. More than eighty percent of our communication is nonverbal, so these nonverbal creatures can reflect back exactly what's going on with us and whether they trust our presence and will follow our lead.' Once you found yourself interacting with, leading, or heading a horse, you learned 'in your body' how to show up differently, how to be attuned to others without losing touch with yourself or your goals." 22. Be the leader of your individual life, manage yourself well to be able to lead others well. "In order to lead — and to get anyone else to follow you — yes, you do need to listen to others . . . a lot. But you also need to be attuned to yourself —your hungers, your drives, and your trigger points. In other words, you have to manage yourself in order to lead others." 23. Understand how to regain your footing and balance "I have found that taking a moment to move away from circumstances where you might feel pressure or triggered —to ask yourself what's most important to you underneath the surface —helps restore your equilibrium." 24. Examine and then release assumptions of how life should be that do not align with your newly defined self "There is no one right way. There is not one label you can slap over your family and call it perfect . . . It is the labels themselves that can make these choices even more difficult. If we don't unpack these assumptions [women should bear more of the parenting responsibility than men even when we wholeheartedly pursue our careers], if we don't stop and ask why it is so, we just end up exhausted and discouraged . . . by letting go of definitions others might set for us as well as the idealized images we have created ourselves . . . we get what we most want . . . the trick is knowing what it is you do actually want and being clear with yourself and your partner on how you both want to lead and prioritize your lives." One of the most perplexing answers I struggle to give is when somebody asks me what I do for a living. I fluctuate between "Which should I say first: a teacher or a writer, or better, a blogger?". It will depend upon the person I am speaking with, but most often, when I state that I am a teacher, there is a handful of assumptions that come along with it, most of which are untrue in my case, but you don't want to dive into a deep philosophical discussion necessarily. As well when I open with "I am a blogger", some become even more curious and others dismiss the title entirely. But the truth is, I feel limited by each, and perhaps you do as well, which is why Beyond the Label resonated with me. People ask such questions: what do you do for a living? are you married? where did you grow up? as a means to better get to know the person they are speaking with. The motivation is largely friendly and benign, but as most of us know, the answers, especially upon a first meeting, immediately build assumptions in the listeners mind - for better or worse. And so perhaps the fault is on us all, but that means all of us can play a role in moving beyond the label. "By moving beyond the label, we can all make our workplaces and our lives more effective and more equitable." "By releasing ourselves from these restrictions, we have a shot at creating success on our own terms." ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: Petit Plaisir ~Diana Krall's new album Turn Up The Quiet (to be released May 5, 2017), her 13th album, 5-time Grammy winner ~view her tour schedule here ~The list of 11 songs on the album: 1. • 01 - Selected Points From the Correct Aqeedah - Abu Ismaeel Saalik | Manchester

Introduction:Having the correct belief and aqeedah is from the foundations of this religion. So when we reflect upon the Qur'an and what Allaah informed us of regarding the call of the Prophets and Messengers, we see that they focused on rectifying the Aqeedah of their people. So they would say:""O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. (La ilaha ill-Allah: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)." 7:65That which is incumbent upon the people is to be diligent upon learning this belief, and teaching it in the schools and the masaajid. Up until it becomes firm in the people and its great importance becomes known to them. The intent is not to strive in worship without knowing Tawheed and having the correct belief. Another reason we should ensure our religion is correct is because, if it is incorrect, then all of our actions will be of no benefit. Allaah has favoured our Ummah over other religions. From the favours is Allaah has preserved our religion, He says in the Quran:"Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)."15:9It was preserved by the Prophet Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, and then his companions, and then the Taabi'in (Students of the Companions) after them it was preserved by those who followed them in goodness. It was in the time of the Tabi'in that the corrupt beliefs started to enter into the religion, so they fought against it.Introduction of the Book:"The one who opposes this methodology (what is to be mentioned in this book), or speaks ill of it, or belittles the one who speaks with this methodology. Then this person is an opposer, an innovator, outside the folds of the "Jamaa'ah" (main body of muslims), somebody who has erred and gone astray. "That which they were united upon:1. “Iman is statement, action, intention and clinging to the sunnah. It increases and decreases.”o It is to believe in the existence of Allaah, that He is the Ever Living, the First (None before Him) and the Last (None after Him). o It is to believe in His Ruboobiyyah - that He is the Creator, Maintainer, Sustainer. o It is to believe in His Uloohiyyah - that He alone is worthy of worship (I.e. reliance, sacrificing and others)o It is to believe in His Perfect Names and Lofty Attributes - We believe in them in a general sense and likewise in a specific sense (those mentioned specifically in the Qur'an and Sunnah). We do not resemble them to creation, nor liken them to creation, nor distort them, nor change their meanings.o All of the Imams believed in this explanation of Iman, the terminology used to describe it may have differed, but the reality of the belief was always the same.o It increases with obedience to Allaah and decreases with the disobedience of Allaah.o Some of the early generation started to oppose this understanding. From them; The Jahmiyyah and the Murji'ah. As a result, he begins to describe the ruling upon those who oppose this understanding of Iman.  Firstly, the Jahmiyyah - they say Iman is only to have belief in the heart, not statements nor actions.  Secondly, the Karaamiyyah - they say Iman is only utterance upon the tongue.  Thirdly, the Ashaa'irah - they, like the Jahmiyyah, say Iman is only belief in the heart. Fourthly, the Murjiatul Fuqahaa - they say Iman is statements and belief, but exclude actions from Iman.o A proof for theincrease and decrease in Iman is the saying of Prophet Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam: "Take out from the Fire, those who had in the hearts, the equivalent of a mustard seed of Iman"o Saying "I am a believer if Allaah wills" is a sunnah of the scholars of the past. The Murji'ah use to say you cannot say this. If a person says this out of doubt, then clearly it is impermissible. However, saying it out of humility, not wanting to testify to one's own Iman. Or to say that his faith is not like that of the angels, then this is acceptable.

  • #116: The Untapped Gold Mine Of Being A World-class Spiritual Entrepreneur That Virtually No One Knows About

    · 00:55:32 · MindSet by Design: NLP | Self Improvement | Health | Wealth | Happiness. World-Class Mind-Hacks for Peak Performance

#116: The Untapped Gold Mine Of Be A World-class Spiritual Entrepreneur That Virtually No One Knows About For thousands of years there has been religion. There have been battles probably since the dawn of time around this concept. Peoples beliefs become so fixed that they are willing to kill and hurt other people in the name of a belief?? It is so strange to me, when especially when you begin to understand the POWER of the BRAIN and what a belief really is. IT IS NOT REAL..!! You might be reading this and are saying ANDY, you are wrong, beliefs are real, I feel them everyday and the effect my whole life. I believe i cant get over the past, I believe i cant get the life that I want and become RICH, HAPPY and FREE. Well, I am here to tell you still that BELIEFS are not REAL.! They are just something we hold true with the information we have at the time. Think about this. It is the same as anything in your life. You could be learning a sport and the way someone from the past has taught you how to play, ight be giving you the result you are getting right now. Then a WORLD CHAMPION comes along and tells you DONT DO THAT, do this, it is going to get you a MUCH BETTER result. SUDDENLY your old belief about how to play is SMASHED and a new belief appears...! Do you see how fast the way you look at the world can change in an instant?? So lets go back to my earlier point about Spirituality. Is spirituality the same as Religion? Is spirituality about "GOD"? What has being spiritual got to do with being an ENTREPRENEUR? To me everything, but there again I have a different BELIEF :) This topic is something I have been researching in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Bali, California and I have spoken to so many people about this over the years..! I wanted to share with you what I have learnt, what MY BELIEFS are and I know you are going to be not only SURPRISED, but YOU are going to be EXCITED, because this is probably going to CHANGE YOUR LIFE ...! The cool thing is I recorded a podcast around this, and wanted to share it with you, so you can see things from another angle, and maybe take on a NEW BELIEF..! You know me by now which means, you also know that I am going to show you SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT from every body else..! I know you will love this LATEST episode, I would also love to hear your feedback as I might do a PART 2 to this one..! BRAIN TRAINING: Take a pen and paper, or a .doc and allow yourself a 5 mins to do this quick exercise. 1. When was the most powerful time that you can remember (even if it was Santa Claus) when you believed something so much and then you found out some NEW information and your world changed Instantly. (make this happy :) ) 2. When that belief changed how did the world change with you? 3. Who or what around you change and how did it effect your life in an AMAZING WAY? (maybe it was around a relationship) As you start to think about this, I want you get the AHA moment when you realised, holding on to any view of the world is crazy, as none of this life is real anyway...! Time to decide what you want and go and get it in 2016...!! LET's DO THIS..!!! THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE, IF YOU LET IT... This is how we build PERFORMANCE at Mindset by Design. • #TDWB (The Difficulty With Believing) --- SynTalk

    · 01:09:50 · SynTalk

What do you believe ‘in’? Do you hold irrational beliefs? Why is it difficult to revise beliefs? Can it be beneficial to have false beliefs? Do you (objectively) believe that there is Heaven? Can beliefs be like axioms, or are they all (iteratively) based on facts? Are absurd beliefs particularly beneficial in forming a community? Does belief always imply an affect? Do you believe that voting is a foolish thing to do? Is belief an instrument of power? Can one infer beliefs of animals or children? Why is there suspension of disbelief or testing (of the truth criterion) in cinema or theatre? How are ritual spaces different? Does cinema tap into the collective (un)conscious (belief)? Is it profitable to believe that God exists? Will there be belief as long as there are skeptics? Can beliefs become redundant? Is the problem of deciding what a new belief should be NP-complete? How do we automatically change our (practical?) beliefs all the time, when it is technically extremely difficult? Would there be a pristine (messianic?) theory of belief revision in the future? How could belief revision be: a variation, a change, a decision, a monstration, or an event? Would you look through Galileo’s telescope? SynTalk thinks about these & more questions using concepts from performance theory and philosophy (Dr. Soumyabrata Choudhury, JNU, New Delhi) & logic, philosophy and computer science (Prof. Rohit Parikh, CUNY, New York). • SPOS #456 - Digital Darwinism With Tom Asacker

    · Six Pixels of Separation - Marketing and Communications Insights - By Mitch Joel at Mirum

Welcome to episode #456 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Brands are in a very difficult predicament. It's not something that is easy to write, but it's true. Competition is fierce and it's getting more complicated, because the types of channels and messages that a brand can create has become boundless (thanks, digital marketing). With this digitization of everything, consumers continue to become more connected, empowered and educated. One might think that this means brands have new and improved opportunities to make connections. According to a McKinsey and Company article published this past February titled, Brand success in an era of Digital Darwinism, this is not the case. The research suggests that brands are losing their impact in a world of "digitally jaded consumers." What's working? Good old fashioned word of mouth. Tom Asacker often sends me links to articles like this one. Just a link. They're usually worthy of a conversation, so this is it. Asacker is a branding expert (although, he prefers to think of his work as the business of belief). He is a well-respected author (The Business of Belief, Sandbox Wisdom, A Clear Eye For Branding and many more) and a friend.
