    · Pursuing Health with Julie Foucher

https://youtu.be/6Gqsr4lpUl8 “I just really want to inspire other people.  I’m so young, and I just want people to understand that they can do more than just school, that they can do both, and that muscles are beautiful… If I can inspire anyone by doing what I do, that’s what motivates me to do it.” –Brooke Wells Brooke Wells is a three-time CrossFit Games athlete, making her first appearance after winning the Central Regional at just 19 years old.  She is consistently one of the top 20 Fittest Women in the world, finishing 16th in 2015, 6th in 2016, and 14th in 2017.  In addition to her full training schedule, Brooke also attends school at the University of Missouri where she is earning her business degree. Jessica Griffith is also a three-time CrossFit Games athlete, and made her rookie debut as an individual in 2017.  She works full-time as an emergency room nurse at a Level I Trauma Center in St. Louis and enjoys how many people she’s able to help on a daily basis through her work.  Jessica successfully balances her long work hours with  a rigorous training schedule that helps prepare her for the challenges of competing at the Games. Brooke and Jessica were hallmates at the 2017 CrossFit Games and formed a fast friendship as they encouraged each other through the trials of cyclocross, swimming, an obstacle course, and more.  I caught up with Brooke and Jess at the Rogue Winter Classic to chat about their evolution as CrossFit Games athletes, how they balance their training with school and work, and what tips, habits, and practices they use to be successful as they train for the 2018 CrossFit Games. In this episode we discuss: Where Jessica & Brooke grew up and how they ended up in Missouri Which sports they participated in growing up, and how that contributed to their CrossFit journey How winning her first scaled CrossFit competition inspired Brooke to pursue CrossFit more seriously How Jessica evolved from a team athlete to an individual Games athlete Their favorite and least favorite moments from the Games and Regionals How Jessica and Brooke’s friendship grew as they encouraged each other through the 2017 Games Brooke’s feelings on the importance of finishing school as a priority over CrossFit, and how she manages her time to accomplish both goals How Jessica balances work as a full-time emergency room nurse while training for the Games How unhealthy working in the healthcare field can be, and how CrossFit gives Jessica an avenue to share healthy lifestyle with others Jessica’s growing interest in holistic healthcare Habits and practices that Brooke and Jessica find to be helpful on a daily basis Brooke and Jessica’s daily routines What motivates Brooke and Jessica to train with such intensity in addition to their full schedules Using CrossFit to inspire others to lead healthier lives How they handle the stresses of being away from their regular training routine Three things Brooke & Jessica do on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on their health One thing they struggle to implement that could have a big impact on their health What a healthy life looks like to Brooke and to Jessica You can follow Jessica Griffith on Facebook and Instagram, and  you can follow Brooke Wells on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Brooke Shields, Recovering Daughter

    · Death, Sex & Money

Brooke Shields became famous as a sex symbol long before she was actually having sex. At 12, she played a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby. Soon after, she starred in the sexy teen romance Blue Lagoon. And at 15, she became the controversial face of Calvin Klein jeans. But then, in college, Brooke publicly revealed her virginity—which she says turned her into "the most famous virgin in the world." "There was a juxtaposition of those two things," Brooke says. "I was not aware. I was not sexually aware." Despite the sexual nature of her early roles, Brooke says she felt safe on set, protected within the industry, and very sheltered at home. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her mother managed her career. But from a young age Brooke also singlehandedly dealt with her mom's alcoholism, which only worsened as she got older. "She damaged almost every relationship she had," Brooke says. "She cut almost everybody off. And I was the only thing left." Brooke eventually fired her mom as her manager and separated her finances from her—but not until she was 29.  Brooke married her second husband, Chris Henchy, in 2001. They wanted to start a family, but it was a struggle. After several rounds of IVF, Brooke got pregnant with their first daughter. She was thrilled, but soon after her daughter's birth, Brooke says the "toxic thoughts" started. "I saw my baby hitting the wall. Like, being flung across the room," she says." "I would close my eyes. And these horrible things, these images, would come through my mind." I talk with Brooke about the treatment that she received for postpartum depression, and whether it made her nervous about having a second child. And we talk about how the death of her mother in 2012 has impacted her career—and how, at 50, she's finally paying attention in financial meetings.

055: Brooke McAlary - SLOW - Live Life Simply

    · Live Immediately with mike campbell

“Be patient with yourself, it does take time.” - Brooke McAlary I am excited to have friend, teacher, and all round beautiful human, Brooke McAlary, back on the podcast this week. Brooke and her husband Ben are the wonderful souls behind the hugely influential Slow Home Podcast, and are two people that have helped, guided, and encouraged Inga and I in many of the big life decisions we have made over the past few years. Brooke’s latest book SLOW has recently been released in Australia and New Zealand. It is part memoir, part practical companion, and provides a fascinating insight into the benefits of slowing down. It will inspire you to forget about the Joneses and create a life filled with the things that really matter to you. Brooke will be doing an Author Talk in my hometown of Newcastle on Wednesday September 27 from 6.30pm at the Hunter Design School. It is set to be a fun evening and I hope to see you there if you’re in the neighbourhood. In this episode Brooke and I really dive deep into this notion of slowing down, being more intentional about your life, and aligning your life with your values. Brooke talks about how she turned her life around to a destination of simple, and how the process is messy and individual for everyone, but how being patient and having faith in the process is fundamental. We also discuss being emotionally available for our children and the people we love, self-worth, and a powerful exercise Brooke did by writing out her eulogy in three sentences. It might sound morbid but it really has nothing to do about death, but everything to do with how you are living, or should be living, your life. Brooke is a kind, insightful, passionate women on a mission to help people change the way they live life—slowly, of course. I hope you enjoy x www.liveimmediately.com

  • 8 Hours Sleep #1

    · The Slow Home Podcast with Brooke McAlary

Brooke and Ben have started a new Slow Home Experiment this week, and it's one that plays directly into Ben's strengths - sleep. Specifically, they're looking to get 8 hours of sleep every night throughout June, and are curious to see how that will impact their health, well-being and energy levels.  Ben's always been a big fan of sleep, but Brooke has been getting by on 6-7 hours a night for years, thinking that's been enough.  The first week was pretty straightforward, with both Brooke and Ben getting at least 8 hours sleep a night. Brooke really enjoys waking early though and has found her early morning alone time the thing that's bearing the brunt of the experiment so far.  So the problem might be in the getting to sleep earlier, rather than the finding time for 8 hours a night.  Brooke also talks about not actually feeling tired by 8:30pm (the time she needs to go to bed in order to wake at 5am) and the idea that she needs to do more exercise in order to actually feel tired enough to sleep. Don't forget, you can play along with Brooke and Ben by tagging your social media posts with #slowhomeexperiment and sharing your experiences. Hit us up on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and let’s get experimenting! 066: FORGE YOUR OWN PATH -- others will follow in your footsteps (w/ Brooke Shaden)

    · Your Creative Push

Brooke Shaden is a fine art photographer, author, and motivational speaker from Lancaster, PA.  She grew up near the "Amish Country" until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with bachelor degrees in film and English. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she places herself within environments she wishes to explore, where secrets are exposed, impossibilities are tested, and life is questioned in eras beyond our own. Brooke works to capture fantastic realities within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements.Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/brookeshaden In this episode, Brooke discusses: -How photography felt like a rebirth for her because it was one of the first things that she considered herself “good at.” -The story of the first time she picked up the camera and started with self-portraiture. -How she has always loved writing and her reason for starting her blog “Promoting Passion.” -Her reason for starting her YouTube channel despite her extreme fear of public speaking. -How she doesn’t like working in teams if she can avoid it. -How she is able to balance her time and produce all of the content that she is able to put out in her various mediums. -The importance of knowing your business so that you can focus solely on the things you love and want to produce and say “no” to things that don’t fit that. -The story behind “Phoenix.” -The story behind “Capturing Inspiration.” -The many factors that contributed into her starting self-portraiture. -How she feels like "The Falling of Autumn Darkness" entirely captures her essence. -One of the things that holds her back is wanting to create images that are darker in nature and fearing the backlash that might come from doing so. -How she has recently decided to slow down her creative pace to make work that will take her longer but will be more creatively fulfilling. -A creatively fulfilling moment in Iceland where she was able to really push herself. -How it's okay if who you think you want to be ends up not being who you become, especially when it comes to art. Brooke's Final Push will inspire you to ignore others and forge your own path! Quotes: “It was quickly evident that photography would morph into the thing that I would continue to pursue.” “I could just pretend that my camera was a friend standing in front of me and sharing my insights, my failures, my successes – anything I had going on at the moment and do that really vulnerably. “I think the moment that we accept our weaknesses and turn them into strengths, then we have control over those things. "To me, self-portraiture is the best way of expressing who I am and being able to do that in the most genuine way while keeping control of the whole creative situation." "Art is the best way of understanding yourself and the better we understand ourselves the more fulfilled our lives can be." "Every single time I put pen to paper or I pull out my camera, it's that question of "Who am I now?  Who do I want to be?  And how will I portray that?  And that is the biggest gift." "It's fine if who you think you want to be turns out to not be true." "Whatever you feel you need to be doing in your life, do it.  Forge your own path and let others follow in your footsteps." Dr. Brooke Kalanick - Optimized Hormone Health & Wellness for Women. Dealing with Gallbladder and Thyroid challenges - Part 2

    · HealthCast Now - The Intersection of Health, Wellness & Circadian Optimization

Dr. Brooke Kalanick - Optimized Hormone Health & Wellness for Women. Dealing with Gallbladder and Thyroid challenges - Part 2 Dr. Brooke Kalanick is a Naturopathic Doctor and a functional health practitioner. She says she’s a primary-care doctor with a specialty in alternative medicine. She and her co-practitioners aren’t like conventional doctors in that they treat patients based on history, diet, lifestyle, and lots of blood work. Her focus is towards helping women with hormonal issues, weight loss, and other issues most women experience on a day-to-day basis.  Today, Brooke tells us what her and her practice is all about, how they differ from conventional doctors, and her own thoughts and opinions on conventional medicine and the healthcare system.    "We mistake common for normal.” Dr. Brooke Kalanick    In this episode, you’ll learn:  Conventional medicine is often all about treating the current symptom. What they don’t do very well is taking a look at the why of a patient’s health.   The body will downregulate anything that it makes once we give it a replacement.  Conventional practitioners aren’t trained to work the way naturopaths do.  Some doctors are working for insurance companies. They want to help patients but the system is broken and it doesn’t serve doctor nor the patient for them to do good medicine. It's not the conventional practitioner that doesn't want you healthy but just how the system works.  We think a lot of the things that happen to our bodies is normal because it’s common, because so many people do it or suffer for it, we mistake it as something that we shouldn’t be concerned about.  Iodine will increase autoimmune response in many people. Just because it's good for your thyroid doesn't mean it's good for the whole body.  Holistic doctors go more in depth when it comes to treating people's illnesses.   Nothing gets fixed without proper sleep.  Get back to doing things that nurture your body and help you and your body work together.    Key Takeaways:  We have to think of our health insurance like we treat car insurance. You can have emergencies covered by health insurance but the small things aren’t; there must always be a certain level of maintenance.  There's no reason you should be miserable with your healthcare. Be your own advocate for getting proper care. Get to the root cause.  Make smarter decisions and take things seriously, don't have that "they will be time for me later" mindset. You're worth the time, attention, and finances to take care of yourself now.    Connect with Dr. Brooke Kalanick:  Better by Dr. Brooke  Better Everyday Blog/Podcast  Twitter    Mentioned in this episode:  Girls Gone Strong    Rate, Review, Connect, Inspire    Stay updated on new episodes, guest interviews, and health, wellness, and fitness information and resources by subscribing to the HealthCastNow Podcast Show on iTunes.
