RFT 069: Combat Pilot/Author Mark Berent· Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Mark Berent received his pilot’s wings in September 1953, then flew the F-86 SabreJet and the F-100 Super Sabre in Germany, France, and the U.S. He even caught a ride in the "missile with a man in it", the F-104. In the early ‘60s, the USAF sent him to Arizona State University to get an engineering degree. While there, the Vietnam War became more intense, and he volunteered for duty in Vietnam In mid-December 1965 he arrived at Bien Hoa Air Base in South Vietnam as a pilot in the 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) in the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW). He flew over 250 missions and was reassigned back in the States to a desk job at the Space and Missile Systems Organization (SAMSO) in El Segundo, California. Though he was able to fly the T-39 Sabreliner, he was not happy. The war tempo had increased. He made contact with Air Force Personnel and soon found himself at George Air Force Base, Victorville, California, upgrading into the F-4 Phantom. On the 1st of November, 1968, he signed in to the 497th TFS at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base in upcountry Thailand. There he flew over 240 missions both as a Night Owl and as a Wolf Forward Air Controller (FAC). He wrote the Wings of War series, a five-part series that follows pilot Court Bannister, pilot Toby Parker, and Special Forces officer Wolf Lochert through their successive combat tours in Vietnam. Along the way, we see real events like Johnson and McNamara micro-managing the war, the outrageous abuse of American Pilots held at the Hoa Lo prison, and the claim of an attack on the Russian ship Turkmenestan.
Guru Jagat: The New Age of Ancient Wisdom, Part One #37· The Life Stylist Podcast
Welcome to the new age of ancient wisdom. We in the west are currently smack dab in the middle of a collective spiritual awakening. Or as our esteemed guest, Guru Jagat affectionately calls it in this episode- the new new age. Whatever you call it, it’s clear that there is a hopeful surge of interest in the area of personal development via spiritual practices. People young and old find themselves looking to the spiritual teachers and traditions of the past to help make sense of the present, and to light a path to a future that carries meaning, and hope. Yoga seems to be everywhere. And it's not just in the crunchy, granola capitals like LA and San Francisco anymore. It’s hit middle America like a waft of curry carried by the winds of change. You might even catch a juiced-up meathead in a yoga class at the gym these days for reasons other than the fact that that’s where you’ll likely find the highest concentration of Lulu Lemon-clad booties doing downward dogs. They are there for the same reason Wall Street brokers use meditation to manage stress: They know there is more to life than the tangible, material plane of reality. And they want to experience it. Young hipsters show off their mindfulness practice poses on Instagram. Native American dream catchers and healing crystals adorn the dashboards of today's’ latest breed of Prius driving spirit seekers. A new language has even emerged on the scene. Terminology like ‘Holding space,' ‘Namaste’ and ‘Balancing your chakras’ have become language you overhear while standing in line at the bank. But what does all this mean, and how can we discern the true from the false? The passing fads from the timeless, universal truths? Can we still live a ‘normal’ life while pursuing a deeper, metaphysical state of being? In this two-part episode with Kundalini Yoga teacher and thought-leader Guru Jagat, we take a very practical, if not irreverent view of the current state of affairs of modern spirituality as seen through the lens of ancient yogic tradition and practice. In it, you will not only learn about the lineage of yoga she practices and teaches, but also how she has managed to create a small empire based on these principles, and how she continues to inspire the current, and incoming generation to find the sometimes hidden, deeper meaning in life. Be the change you want to see in the world by sharing this show with someone who shares your curiosity of the unknown. Learning from the Vietnam Urban Upgrading Program· Urban (video)
National urban upgrading in Vietnam evolved as a result of economic and political reforms and locally driven experiences. Rapid economic growth following the 1986 Doi Moi reforms was followed by rapid urbanization. In 1990, Vietnam’s urban population was 20.3% of the total population, by 2009 it was about 29.6%, and in 2011 it was 30% with a growth rate of 3.4%. Local projects, like the Hoa-Lo Gom Sanitation and Urban Upgrading Program in Ho Chi Minh City and the Nam Dinh Urban Development Project in Nam Dinh, experimented with upgrading as an alternative to the removal and compensation model of low-income urban areas. While these projects aimed to target immediate concerns through upgrading, challenges remain to offer affordable housing to lower-income households and access to long-term financial assistance. In 2004, the Vietnam Urban Upgrading Project (VUUP) was launched by the government marking a shift in national policy towards comprehensive upgrading of low-income areas. As a large-scale multi-city and multi-year project, the VUUP aimed to alleviate urban poverty by improving living conditions through in-situ upgrading and improving the environment through a pro-poor and participatory approach, including providing affordable housing and finance alternatives. The VUUP paved the way for the launch of the National Urban Upgrading Program in 2009 as the first national strategy that institutionalizes upgrading as an approach for reducing urban poverty. Much effort is still needed for the formal housing sector to provide affordable housing at all income levels. In the meantime, the scaling up of low-income area upgrading activities such as the VUUP offers an opportunity to improve the living conditions of the population of Vietnamese cities. Mr. Duong Quoc Nghi will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the VUUP and the complexities in designing and implementing national programs in Vietnam. Mr. Nghi is the director of the Management of Urban Development Projects and the Urban Development Agency in the Ministry of Construction. He leads the formulation and execution of projects in urban planning, environmental improvement and upgrading nation-wide. Ms. Hoa Thi Hoang is a Senior Urban Specialist at the World Bank in Hanoi, Vietnam, and is leading the Bank’s efforts on upgrading programs. She will complement the discussion with sharing on-going developments and impacts of the national programs in Vietnam.
SLT065: Strategic Simple Living· Simple Life Together
When it comes to making long-term plans for our lives, we all go through a "dream stage"...where we just kind of day dream about what our life might be like. Seriously, we’ve all, at some point in our life, thought about what it would be like to win the lottery or be super rich...and you kind of lose yourself in the dream. While I’m sure there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it's really more productive to do some systematic ideation. By dreaming systematically, you'll likely improve your chances for success. For us, this is strategic simplicity. By going through a process of systematic ideation, you may come up with more questions than answers initially. But in the end, you'll probably be a lot closer to what you want and be able to formulate a real plan of action. Yes, truly strategic simple living! Read more... Note: Our new book Supermom vs Super Mom is digital and will help you eliminate clutter in your life, too! Topic: Strategic Simple Living Ok, so what is “systematic ideation” and how can you use it? Well, I’m sure there’s lots of different ways to systematically come up with ideas. I’m a bit of a tinkerer...kind of a MacGyver type and enjoy product design. I even recently had a company put one of my ideas into production and they’re getting ready to release it. But years ago, I read a book (I can’t for the life of me remember or find the title) that sparked my interest in systematic ideation. But today we’re going to share one ideation tool with you that you might be able to use on your simplicity journey. We adapted this from a post we saw on Governing.com that had absolutely nothing to do with strategic simple living. Still, the tool was intriguing, so we adapted it for our use. The 4 Direction Ideation Tool So here you go: A good way to be more systematic about your ideation is by looking in all four "directions". By that we mean, Outward, Inward, Backward and Forward. It’ll help if we give an example, so we’ll show you how we used this tool in our search for the “perfect” town or place for us to live. Of course, you can use it for any ideation exercise you wish! So first we have Look Outward: We’re going to look at the local, regional, and national possibilities. We could even look internationally if we wanted. Next we have Look Inward: What do we really want? What are our "must haves", and what are the "deal breakers?" Vanessa will break this down a bit in a minute and share some things we consider. Look Backward: Doing a candid review of what has and hasn't worked in the past. What did we like about it, what did we dislike. Finally, we have Look Forward: What do we want it to look like, feel like, be like? Our Search for the Perfect Place to Live Back in Episode 49, Live the Life of Your Dreams, we talked about our “Freedoms From” and our "Freedoms To." One of those freedoms to was “Freedom To Choose Where & How We Live.” So, again, just to give you an example of using the tool on our quest for strategic simple living, let's look at our search for the “ideal” place for us to live. So, before we start the 4 directions, here are some qualities we know our dream location will have: A quality grocery store within walking distance Close to downtown shops; coffee shops, bookstores, diners, local shops, etc...oh and free wi-fi is always nice... We’d like to live near water. Not ocean...preferably a creek or river...or even a lake Small acreage to maintain; ¼ - 1 acre max! Good schools...or good home-school co-ops if needed We’d prefer an empty lot to build to our exact liking No size restrictions on home...for us that means small, not big No Home Owner's Association (HOA) would be ideal If HOA...hopefully open to green/sustainable building techniques or upgrades Reasonable tax rates...Military retirement not taxed...state taxes Local farmers markets Outdoor activities easily accessible...fishing, camping, hiking, biking, etc.
Origins and Turning Points - 74· Triangle Tactical - USPSA | 3 Gun | IDPA | Competitive Shooting
Ben and I talk about how we got started in competitive shooting. Neither of us are lifelong competitors, and we talk about how we got started, and the things that kept us wanting to improve our shooting. Neither of us are lifelong competitive shooters, and we both got started different ways. The News: Sen. Diane Feinstein has written an 'open letter' to President Obama asking him to ban the import of semi-automatic rifles, and "assault pistols" citing the 1968 Gun Control Act. Last week we talked about the Winston-Salem, NC gun buyback, and how they issued IOU's for the guns after they ran out of money. Looks like the city had to make some budget changes in order to pay for the guns they took in, and it should be noted that they will not be offering IOUs at the April gun buyback. Also, look at the stock photo used on the linked news website, they only took in 2 "assault weapons" at the event last weekend, so that picture is obviously from a different location... hmmm... A Tennessee Home Owners Association has passed an ordinance banning guns on the property, and people have lost their minds about it, calling the action by the HOA unconstitutional. HOA's aren't legislative bodies, and they can't pass laws. They have already stated that they will change the wording of the ordinance to just make discharging a firearm on the property disallowed. A Lumberton, MS shop clerk was attacked and stabbed by person in the convenience store where she worked. A concealed carry permit holder chased down the attacker, and held him at gun point until police arrived. In another blog post, I took the stance that CCW holders shouldn't chase people down and hold them at gunpoint, and I've taken a bit of flak about it. Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts here. The Misguided Moms claimed victory this week for the Slidefire billboard being removed in the Chicago area. Turns out the billboard was put up with a 2 month contract, and the contract had just ran out. Sorry moms. Tip of the Week: When shooting a gun that you aren't familiar with in a match setting, and you aren't sure where the sights will impact with that pistol (6 o'clock hold, or POA/POI) you may be able to split the difference and aim in an area of the target that it won't hurt your game too much of the bullet impacts one way or the other.
