  • Facebook Marketing: Why It Is Time to Rethink Everything

    · Social Media Marketing Podcast helps your business thrive with social media

Do you use Facebook to market your business?Wondering how marketing on Facebook is evolving? To explore how marketers should adjust to Facebook's recent and future changes, I interview Mari Smith.More About This ShowThe Social Media Marketing podcast is an on-demand talk radio show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. In this episode, I interview Mari Smith, the world's leading Facebook marketing expert. She co-authored Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day and is author of The New Relationship Marketing.Mari shares why it's time for marketers to rethink how they use Facebook. You'll discover where Mari believes Facebook is headed.Share your feedback, read the show notes, and get the links mentioned in this episode below.Listen NowYou can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:Facebook MarketingThe Facebook AlgorithmMari explains that the Facebook algorithm pre-filters content that users see in their news feeds. The algorithm manages the vast amount of content posted to Facebook and thus helps advertisers, while hopefully showing Facebook users the most relevant content among the thousands of posts they could see.Users can have as many as 5,000 friends, join up to 6,000 groups, and follow up to 5,000 pages. With posts coming from all of these sources, users might see as many as 15,000 posts. Mari says that the Facebook algorithm narrows down what users actually see to about 1,500 posts, and from that pool of content, narrows what users might see even further to about 300 posts.Mari says the algorithm is complex with about 100,000 weights, of which only about a half-dozen are known. For instance, Facebook favors stories from users' friends, video content, and so on. Also, when the algorithm came out in 2008, along with Facebook business pages, it made the news feed non-chronological.Mari explains that the algorithm exists because Facebook needs to keep users coming back and also offer value to advertisers. Each day, the average user logs on about 14 times (more for marketers), and is on Facebook an average of 50 cumulative minutes. That creates a huge captive audience, which is a massive amount of potential to offer advertisers. To maintain that value, the algorithm encourages user engagement. Mari notices how she loves keeping up with her friends and community via Facebook and sees an advertisement about every third post. The better the targeted ad, the more likely she is to respond.Mari also notes that by encouraging user engagement, the algorithm also encourages users to share information with Facebook. This information helps Facebook keep the users and advertisers happy.I ask what marketers should do so users see more of their content in the news feed. Mari recommends not only sharing video, but also slightly increasing the length of videos. For uploaded videos, Mari has discovered a minimum of 90 seconds makes content more visible. For a live video, Mari recommends broadcasting for at least 5 minutes.Mari says Facebook favors slightly longer video because it enables Facebook to insert mid-roll ads. These ads break in and run for about 20 seconds. At the moment, mid-roll ads are in beta and you have to sign up before they'll appear in your video. Also, Mari says these ads appear only if you have at least 2,000 followers of your profile or page and 300 concurrent viewers.Mari explains that the decline in Facebook user posts and the algorithm's preference for camera-based content are related. Facebook is moving more into the camera mode because over the past three or four years, users have been sharing fewer status updates. Typing a post is harder than snapping a picture and adding sticker or filter.Mari stresses that real-time signals are also important to the visibility of your co...

  • ETH033 - Echolink

    · 00:54:08 · Everything Ham Radio Podcast

Hello everybody and welcome back to the Everything Ham Radio Podcast! In this episode we are going to be talking about Echolink. What is Echolink? Echolink is a piece of free Windows software that allows you to connect to repeaters, other users or conference servers all over the world. Below is what the official description is: EchoLink® software allows licensed Amateur Radio stations to communicate with one another over the Internet, using streaming-audio technology.  The program allows worldwide connections to be made between stations, or from computer to station, greatly enhancing Amateur Radio's communications capabilities.  There are more than 200,000 validated users worldwide — in 151 of the world's 193 nations — with about 5,200 online at any given time. After you download the software, you will need to validate your call sign. This is done to make sure that those that are using the software do indeed have an amateur radio license. There are a couple ways that this can be done. You can upload or fax a copy of your license, which you can find complete instructions on how to do this on the Validation Pages. The second way to do it is by using a digital certificate through Logbook of the World. If you live in the US, you also validate your license via the telephone or credit-card-based verification. Download Echolink Running Echolink Locally After you have installed Echolink and you have validated your license, you can start using Echolink. If you are using it locally, all you need is your computer, a microphone and speakers. If you are operating on a laptop, the built in mic and speakers will work, all be it your audio quality will probably stink. Once you start up the program, you can pull up the list of all the users or nodes that are currently logged on. You can connect to someone directly, or to a link or repeater and your connection will be sent out over the air from the repeater that you are connected to. Anyone that you end up talking to will be sent back across the internet to you computer. You can also use echolink on your IPhone or Android device. Both types of phone has an app that you can use that will basically do the same thing that you can on your desktop. The biggest difference is that you will typically go through a relay on your phone by default. When you do no one else can connect to you. However, you can go into the settings of the app and set it to direct and you others will be able to connect to you. However, when you have it set to direct, you will have to be on Wifi to use it. If you are on your cellular data, you will need to set it to Relay again. Running Echolink Remotely If you are planning on running an echolink node is “sysop” mode or remote mode, you will need some type of interface between your computer and your radio. What this piece of hardware does is it allows your computer to key up your radio and in some cases accepts and processes DTMF commands from the receiver. This type of setup is generally used for simplex operation or when you are setting up a link that will service a repeater. If you are not the repeater owner/trustee, make sure that you get their permission before you setup your echolink interface. Below is a list of some of the interfaces that you can purchase   Kenwood TM-V71 and TM-D710 Transceivers The Kenwood TM-V71 and TM-D710 dual-band FM transceivers are the only commercially-available rigs with EchoLink capabilities built in. With these rigs, no special interface is required; you can use the optional PG-5H cable (or a homebrew cable) to connect the rig directly to your PC. For answers to frequently-asked questions about using EchoLink with the TM-V71 and TM-D710, please click here.   WB2REM & G4CDY'S Linking Interfaces These interfaces are available fully-assembled, or in kit form.  The original circuit was described in QST for March, 2002.  The newer ULI and AMI models have additional features.   W5TXR Electronic Labs Interface The W5TXR Electronic Labs EchoLink/Multimode interface is available as a kit or completely assembled and tested (serial or USB models). Large prototyping area. FCC Part 15 compliance is pending.   USB and Serial Port EchoLink Interfaces Advanced Repeater Systems offers several EchoLink Interfaces: a low-cost Serial Port PCB device, a USB device with speaker/microphone plugs for most portable radios and a USB Universal device that can interfaced to virtually any transceiver or repeater.   RIGblaster from West Mountain Radio Several models of these general-purpose digital-mode interfaces are available, all of which are compatible with EchoLink.  Use EchoLink's internal DTMF decoder when using a RIGblaster and set it to VOX in the Sysop mode.  (If you wish to use a RIGblaster and join the EchoLink QSO using the linked radio's microphone, the RIGblaster Pro model is required.)   G3VFP iLINK / EchoLink Interface Controller Fully assembled and enclosed, fully isolated interface designed expressly for iLINK/EchoLink.  Can be used with other digital-mode software such as PSK31.   Tigertronics SignaLink USB This is a USB device that functions as an external sound card, with VOX-controlled PTT, so no connections to your computer's sound card or serial port are required. Pre-wired cables are available for popular transceivers. Can also be used with digital modes such as PSK31. Other Interfaces Here are some other interface options for EchoLink. PY2JF Interface (from Brazil) DL5MGD Controller (diagrams and PIC source code) AB6CQ's PC to Radio Interface Fox Delta EchoLink Interface Conferences Any installation of Echolink can be used as a conference server for up to 99 people, if your internet speed can handle it. Each connection requires 17 kbps of upload speed, so if your upload speed is 128kbps, then you would only be able to support seven or eight connections before users started experiencing chopping issues. If you are interested in setting up an echolink server full time, you can setup a dedicated server by using a program called theBridge. The server should be installed on a fast, reliable dedicated server with plenty of bandwidth. Remember, 17kbps is required per user, so the more users, the faster the upload/download speed has to be. theBridge is a program that is developed seperately from Echolink, but as of version 1.06 if can be used to host a conference. The program can also be used for other VoIP amteur radio systems as well, like IRLP or ILink. If you want to do  dedicated server, the server name has to be approved by Echolink and it will be surrounded by stars(*). It will also be listed separately from other users on the Echolink system. One of the other requirements with a server is that is can not be linked with another VoIP system link IRLP or ILink and must be used for amateur radio use only with no commercial advertisements or services. For more information on Echolink or to look up users online or links near you, goto the Echolink website Supporting Everything Ham Radio If you like what you have heard on my podcast or read on my blog and would like to know how you can give your support, check out the Support page! After basically being told that his opinion didn't matter to the club he was in at the time, he decided to start a new club. So with the help of six other hams, the SNARS club was formed. From then on it has thrived! They have put up repeaters, have several nets, do a lot of other functions and has since became northern Nevada’s largest amateur radio organization and possibly presently one of the largest in the state of Nevada. • Promoted Pins: How to Advertise on Pinterest

    · Social Media Marketing Podcast helps your business thrive with social media

Do you use Pinterest promoted pins?Want to discover how they work?To explore everything you need to know about promoted pins on Pinterest, I interview Vincent Ng.More About This ShowThe Social Media Marketing podcast is an on-demand talk radio show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. In this episode, I interview Vincent Ng, president of MCNG Marketing and author of Pinterest to Profits with Pintalysis. Vincent helps businesses succeed with Pinterest marketing and visual social media.Vincent explores Pinterest promoted pins. You'll discover what's new with promoted pins.Share your feedback, read the show notes, and get the links mentioned in this episode below.Listen NowYou can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:Promoted PinsAt a basic level, Vincent says, promoted pins are Pinterest advertising. As you scroll through your Pinterest feed and see "Promoted by" on a pin, that means it's advertising. He notes that any pin you want to promote must be a public pin, and says you can even promote something you've repinned! What's New With Promoted Pins?Pinterest recently announced promoted video pins, which, at the moment, are specifically for users on mobile. These pins show an animated GIF and lead you to a full video when you click on them. What's really cool, Vincent shares, is that you can put up to six additional pins below the video on your promoted pin for no extra cost. The six additional pins display like a carousel under the video, and you can use them to promote the product in the video or share additional information about it.httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufVJ3oqpQQ8While video pins currently send users to third-party players like YouTube to view the video promoted in the pin, Pinterest is working on its own native video player, which will be rolled out to everybody soon. Once available, people will be able to upload videos directly to Pinterest.Listen to the show to hear what video lengths Vincent has seen on Pinterest. What Can You Do With Promoted Pins?Vincent says you can reach a large audience with promoted pins, and that Pinterest allows you to create ad campaigns based on three main business goals: awareness, engagement, and traffic.Brand awareness campaigns let you promote your pin to an audience and you pay based on a thousand impressions. With engagement campaigns, you're charged every time someone taps and enlarges your pin, repins your pin, saves your pin, or clicks your pin. During traffic campaigns, you pay for every click-through on your pin.Vincent says the great thing about promoted pins is that you pay only for the direct promotion, meaning that if a user clicks on someone's share of your promoted pin, that click is free for you. In fact, Pinterest says users get an average of 30% free engagement when they conduct promoted pin campaigns.Which type of campaign is the most cost-effective? Vincent says that he agrees with Pinterest peers Alisa Meredith and Jeff Sieh, who both find the cost-per-click campaigns offer the best bang for your buck versus engagement campaigns. Why? About 80% of Pinterest users access the app on mobile, so they'll enlarge your pin to get a better look at your product. If it's not what they want, they don't necessarily click through.Vincent says it's also possible to run split tests with promoted pins because each campaign type provides the same level of metrics. After you run your test, go to your advertising dashboard and export the data to see which campaign type is a more cost-effective option for your businessPinterest also offers promoted pin users robust targeting capabilities, Vincent says, including by keywords and interests.Pinterest users are asked to follow five interests when they sign up,

If your subscribers don't know how to change it, this is how they will be finding your emails. At the time of this post, not all subscribers have tabs, but it is rolling out very quickly. What are the marketing implications?Gmail is becoming like Facebook. If you use it, you use it by their rules.I'm also concerned by the possibility that other email providers may follow Google's lead. This may be the beginning of the end of email as the one platform you can at least get delivery into. With social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, you can never be sure that your messages get in front of your audience.Email has always been the one way that you could be certain of getting in front of your audience, assuming subscribers gave you permission to send them emails. Will this change with Gmail tabs? I think so.The updates in the Promotions tab reset each time you visit Gmail, meaning it is very easy for a Gmail user to never realize there is mail waiting in the Promotions tab.Other email providers may follow suit. There could come a time when marketers will have to pay to play.Your 5-step plan for dealing with Gmail tabsHere are tips you can move on right now to help educate your Gmail readers. These are all proactive steps we have taken at Social Media Examiner.1. Make a video educating your Gmail users.First, educate your subscribers by making a video like the one below I made for our audience.httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Elz_1KQnmAIn this video, you'll learn how your readers can make sure your emails show up in their Primary box.

At $299 for a license, that’s a cool 600 million dollars. A startup backed by Google co-founder Larry Page is aiming to reshape transportation by giving us flying cars, and the company finally gave the internet a teaser today. Kitty Hawk posted the first video of its all-electric aircraft today. The vehicle is only designed to fly over water, but the company says you won’t even need a pilot’s license to fly it. The Kitty Hawk Flyer will supposedly go on sale by the end of 2017. Pricing details won’t be revealed until later in the year, but you can get in line to purchase one by signing up for a three-year Kitty Hawk membership for $100. But the agency recently lost controls of these tools. Those who have obtained them now have “the entire hacking capacity of the CIA” at their disposal, according to WikiLeaks. At the end of 2016, the CIA’s hacking division was made up of more than 5,000 “registered users” who had produced over a thousand tools to infiltrate target devices throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States. iOS devices were also a major target. The CIA created and obtained tools from GCHQ, NSA, FBI and contractors like Baitshop that allowed them to bypass the encryption used by apps like WhatsApp and Telegram and collect audio and text message data.   Global elites’ love of iPhone made iOS a prime target of CIA http://www.cultofmac.com/470881/global-elites-love-of-iphone-made-ios-a-prime-target-of-cia/ Although Google’s Android dominates the worldwide smartphone market, the CIA concentrated on Apple’s iOS because of its popularity among global elites, WikiLeaks reports. Despite iPhone’s minority share (14.5%) of the global smart phone market in 2016, a specialized unit in the CIA’s Mobile Development Branch produces malware to infest, control and exfiltrate data from iPhones and other Apple products running iOS, such as iPads. The disproportionate focus on iOS may be explained by the popularity of the iPhone among social, political, diplomatic and business elites.   Famous jailbreaker says WikiLeaks CIA dump is overhyped http://www.cultofmac.com/470951/famous-jailbreaker-says-wikileaks-cia-dump-overhyped/ Cyber security expert Will Strafach, who gained notoriety under the name Chronic for finding zero-day exploits used for jailbreaking, says iOS users don’t need to be worried. “I do not believe any iOS user running iOS 10+ has any cause for concern by this,” Strafach told Cult of Mac in an email after we asked for his expert opinion on Tuesday’s big CIA leak. Apple is saying that ‘many’ of the exploits exposed in the leak have been patched…. "Many"   Curved OLED displays will be exclusive to premium iPhone 8 http://www.cultofmac.com/470593/youll-pay-5-8-inch-oled-iphone-8/ Sources claim the new 5.8-inch curved display will only be available with the high-end iPhone, while the more affordable 4.7- and 5.5-inch models will carry LCD panels similar to those Apple has been using since the iPhone’s introduction in 2007. If the other two models are sticking with 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays, this suggests they’ll retain their physical Home buttons, too. “By adding more large-screen options to the lineup to meet growing demand for BIG, Apple intends to raise the average iPhone price, which has already gone up by about 10% in the past three years to nearly $700,” How much is too much for a phone?   2017’s ‘iPhone Edition’ to arrive late, OLED display uncertain http://www.cultofmac.com/471109/2017s-iphone-edition-launch-late-oled-display-not-sure-thing/ We’ve all been calling it the iPhone 8 for months, but according to a new report out of Japan, Apple’s tenth anniversary smartphone will be named “iPhone Edition.” Apple is expected to deliver improved versions of its 4.7- and 5.5-inch devices, plus a more premium model with a 5.8-inch OLED display. According to Japanese blog Macotakara, which has been accurate in the past, this handset will be named iPhone Edition. Although it will almost certainly be unveiled in September alongside its siblings, it is believed the iPhone Edition won’t go on sale until later in the year. Apple is said to be experimenting with various prototypes of the device, each with a different display setup. The report suggests that Apple is still a long way away from deciding on a final design for the iPhone Edition, though it has nailed down a few features — including wireless charging and a dual camera setup similar to that of iPhone 7 Plus. That's all the CultCast we've got for you this week   Shizzle we talked about: Nintendo Switch and Zelda Breath of The Wild Netgear R6700 Netgear Orbi Priority Continuum bike

  • Mobile Branding – Dein Vorsprung im Wettbewerb

    · DIGITAL THINK!NG - Marke | Kommunikation | Digitalisierung

Know your People   Digitale Markenführung setzt auf Kennzahlen wie Verweildauer und Klickraten. Get mobile! • Facebook Instant Articles: How to Get Started

    · Social Media Marketing Podcast helps your business thrive with social media

Have you seen Facebook Instant Articles? Are you curious about how to publish them?To discover how to get started using Facebook Instant Articles, I interview Leslie Samuel.More About This ShowThe Social Media Marketing podcast is an on-demand talk radio show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. In this episode, I interview Leslie Samuel, a blogging expert who runs BecomeABlogger.com. He's also the host of the Learning With Leslie podcast and the head of training for the Social Media Marketing Society.Leslie explores the benefits and challenges of Facebook Instant Articles. You'll discover what you need to know to get started with this new feature.Share your feedback, read the show notes, and get the links mentioned in this episode below.Listen NowYou can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:Facebook Instant ArticlesWhat Are Instant Articles?A relatively new feature, Facebook Instant Articles offers publishers content-hosting directly on Facebook, so users get a better mobile experience. If you're on the Facebook mobile app and you see an article with a lightning bolt at the top right of the open graph image, it's the Facebook Instant Articles version. When you click through to read that content, it loads very quickly because you're not leaving Facebook to go to another website.Listen to the show to learn about some special features you can add to Facebook's Instant Articles.Benefits for BloggersFacebook has more than 1.65 billion users. Chances are, if you're trying to reach someone, they're on Facebook. One problem Facebook solves with Instant Articles is eliminating slow page-load times. According to a study by Kissmetrics, if a website takes longer than 3 seconds to load, more than 40% of those users will abandon it. Instant Articles makes content available very quickly.Other benefits include great user experience. Leslie adds that some of the interactive elements help the articles really stand out.Since Facebook seems to reward those producers whose content keeps people on Facebook longer, such as live broadcasting, I ask Leslie about Facebook's monetary benefits for those who choose to advertise.Leslie explains that if you use Facebook's Audience Network, you can do a revenue share. You keep 70% of the revenue generated from ad clicks. It's kind of like AdSense within your instant articles. Leslie doesn't see it as a huge benefit, because you can do that on your website with AdSense or other networks. However, Facebook makes it easy to use ads within your instant articles.According to Facebook, as of right now, they're not giving instant articles preferential treatment. However, the Facebook algorithm strives to show people the best content quickly. So, if more people click through to instant articles, Leslie can see the algorithm naturally giving preferential treatment to this content. Plus, Facebook will show content that gets a lot of engagement to more of the people who like your page.Facebook's desire to get users to spend more time on their platform gives content creators a unique opportunity. Leslie says that in the past, if people put up engaging images or videos and others shared them like crazy, they would get additional reach. With this control over content, ads, and links, a business could use that reach to benefit their brand and business, grow an email list, promote products, and more. For instance, put a link to an email opt-in form at the end of an instant article.Leslie believes that smart marketers using Facebook as a primary marketing platform will figure out how to take advantage of the benefits of instant articles to get users into their system.Leslie discusses the difference between Facebook Notes and Instant Articles,

To make software useful, honestly, to even make it real, you have to ship it. Building a web app? Then deploy that next version. Building a toolset for data scientists? Send them that application. Managed to get a cool GUI going in Python with Togo or PySide? Time to have your users start downloading it. Python is an amazing ecosystem. But one of the frailer parts of it has been shipping and deploying software - especially to end users. This episode, you'll meet Glyph. Join us as we discuss where we are and where we are going for shipping Python code.
