How To Simulate A Full Sleep Cycle In 20 Minutes, The Best Stress Biohack That Exists, Vagus Nerve Stimulation & Much More!

    add

I'm constantly playing and experimenting with new devices and so-called biohacks to enhance sleep and cognition. One of my favorites of late is a very handy device called the NuCalm, which I've been using to simulate an entire 120 minute sleep cycle with just a 20 minute daily powernap. The NuCalm is a next-level cranial electrotherapy stimulation device that uses both a relaxation cream and mild stimulation to help your brain interrupt the adrenaline and cortisol release by mimicking what naturally occurs in your brain right before you sleep. It includes an app with “music” – which is actually neuroacoustic software that delivers frequencies to your brain which take you down to theta brain wavelength. This thing lets me get a 20-minute intense period of relaxation even when I can’t nap, and I’m now ducking away and using it nearly every day, particularly during travel and on airplanes. It’s spendy, but in my opinion, well worth it. You can get a NuCalm here and save $500 with code: BEN500. My guest on this show is Jim Poole Chairman, President and CEO of Solace Lifesciences, Inc., the maker of NuCalm. J im is an accomplished business executive with extensive experience in the healthcare,. biotechnology, dental, market research, and IT industries. Mr. Poole manages the strategic direction and ongoing operations of Solace Lifesciences, Inc., a neuroscience company focused on personalized wellness and performance. In 2015, Solace Lifesciences, the maker of NuCalm, was granted the world’s sole patent for “Systems and Methods for Balancing and Maintaining the Health of the Human Autonomic Nervous System.” Mr. Poole has successfully launched global products, managed growth strategies, and effectively optimized business operations for large and small organizations alike. Prior to joining Solace Lifesciences, Jim co-founded Focused Evolution, a premier global management strategy-consulting firm. As a Managing Partner, he managed mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, and growth strategies for venture capital and private equity firms. Under Jim’s leadership, Focused Evolution grew into a multi-million dollar consulting firm, serving a global client portfolio of 49 companies, across a broad in a range of industries. Jim serves on the board of directors of several medical device firms around the world. He is a recognized business leader, public speaker, an accomplished author, and has published numerous articles in industry trade journals and lectures all over the world globally on topics including stress, recovery, performance, and business strategy. Jim has published over 30 articles in industry trade journals. A New York state native, Poole earned a BA in psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MBA in International Business & Marketing from Babson College. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is a NuCalm?...8:30 Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) Designed to halt the stress response and raise the parasympathetic response Was developed over the course of 20 years by a neuroscientist/quantum physicist/naturopath, Dr. Holloway He's not myopic: you'll find biochemistry, electrical signaling Physiological benefit of living like a monk The hand-held device is the core of the product Brain and body communicate in 2 ways: chemical and electrical messaging Cycles brain wave function into data Key is in controlling the adrenal glands It's FDA cleared to treat insomnia, anxiety, depression Amino acid GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid0); the antithesis of adrenal stimulation GABA is transmitted to the brain via the cream Shuts down the HPA axis (adrenals) The cream contains, in addition to GABA, taurine, glycine, casein tryptic hydrolysate (the protein found in mother's milk) If you didn't get all that, get this: The device relaxes the nervous system, which allows the GABA in the cream to reach the brain and work its magic -How the audio features in the NuCalm app enhance the user experience...22:20 Binaural beats: Discovered in 1839 The ear can't hear them; they bring the signal into the brain Binaural signal processing (512 hz into the left ear; 500 hz into the right ear) Reticular activating system: Stimulation filter to the brain Two functions: pattern recognition and find a shortcut One track on the NuCalm app is over 700 mb of data (compared to 5-6 mb on an iTunes track) Non-linear oscillating algorithm: Takes the brain from beta (awake) to alpha and theta Theta is when the cells cleanup and create energy source for themselves (healing zone) -The science behind going through an entire sleep cycle in a 20 minute power nap...28:00 NuCalm's claims attracted top scientists to validate them World's preeminent expert in HRV verified that the NuCalm truncates a 2 hours of sleep into 20 minutes Won "best of CES" at Consumer Electronics Show Dr. Hollowell was resistant to creating a 20 minute track mimicking an entire sleep cycle (was 40-50 minutes) Supply followed demand; after months of research the 20 minute track was a reality -How the NuCalm device measures heart-rate variability...37:40 Low frequency (LF) pertains sympathetic nervous system High frequency (HF) the parasympathetic Monk-like meditation level within one minute Took 5 years to secure a patent on the technology Worked with the most renowned experts on HRV C.K. Peng Captured date from 2 groups: metastatic stage 4 cancer, professional athletes LF is lowered while raising the HF 100 patients with depression and anxiety were studied with astounding results after using the device We understand intuitively that stress causes disease, but don't understand why We can't understand the intangible Long-term time horizons make us apathetic in our youth High-stress/poor sleep lifestyle = not enough time in theta or the 2nd stage of sleep Cancer is the best way to articulate the breakdown We all have cancer in our bodies, however our immune system kills them when it's functioning properly Stress breaks down this function over time Physiological benefit: It activates the vagus nerve Slows breath down to one breath per 10 seconds Syncs heart with the lungs Fully oxygenated -How the NuCalm affects recovery...47:55 Elite military units use the device for expedited recovery without the use of drugs It takes the foot off the accelerator, in a manner of speaking Return on investment: 30 minutes yields 12-15 hours of highly focused work Autonomic system is key to managing stress, anxiety, fear, etc. The itty bitty shitty subcommittee in the back of your brain goes away Without proper sleep, we literally stress ourselves to death The offer is not to cure or heal anything; it's to alleviate stress and allow the body to heal itself, the immune system to fight disease Even monks love the device -The NuCalm's effect on the nervous system beyond HRV and the vagus nerve...56:30 24 page study -How the NuCalm affects (or interrupts) your normal sleep schedule...1:01:05 Don't take the power nap close to normal bedtime 15 minute rule: use it as an aid to fall back asleep in the middle of the night Sweet spot: between 1-4 pm (normal time body wants to take a nap) Your body cannot compensate for sleep debt NuCalm is not a "hack" for getting less sleep If you live 100 years, you should sleep for 33 years You stay in theta during the NuCalm power nap (which is where the body heals itself); ordinarily you'll be in delta The body relies on GABA during sleep The body keeps the nutrients it needs; secretes what it doesn't The GABA in the cream during a mid-day power nap will still be there when you go to bed at night -Final rapid-fire questions...1:10:45 Whether there is any efficacy in increasing the cranial electrical stimulation using the device About the other settings on the device (relaxation and recovery) About the Ignite app [link] (sympathetic stimulation) Opposite effect of the NuCalm Can be used in tandem, but not independently of NuCalm -And much more... Beyond 23&Me: A Deep Dive Into Ben Greenfield's Personal DNA Results (& How To Get Your Own Genes Interpreted)

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar
    add

I'm constantly blown away by the amount of genetic data and actionable information one can garner from a simple bit of saliva. In today's episode, you're going to get an insider glimpse into how to go way beyond something as simple as 23AndMe or Ancestry and instead learn how to get truly useful health information that you can use to enhance health, performance, sleep, gut function, neurotransmitters and cognition and much more. My guest on this podcast, Dr. Mansoor Mohammed, has an extremely impressive background in the field of genetics. His credentials include: -BSc. Specialized Honours in Molecular Genetics | University of Guelph | Guelph -Doctor of Philosophy with Distinction in Molecular Genetics & Immunology | University of Guelph | Guelph -Postdoctoral Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship | University of California | Los Angeles -Postdoctoral Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship | Baylor College of Medicine | Houston Dr. Mansoor is now the President and CSO of The DNA Company, a leading and innovative provider of comprehensive Functional Genomics testing and consulting and an industry first: individually customized supplements based on your genetics. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in medical genomics and has been the recipient of multiple academic and industry awards. He is the holder of several patents in the general fields of molecular diagnostics and genomics research and is one of the most sought-after national and international conference speakers in the genre of personalized medicine. Prior to his role at The DNA Company, Dr. Mansoor was: - Founder and President of ManaGene (2010-2018) - CEO of Combimatrix (Nasdaq traded leader in diagnostic genomic microarrays) (2006-2010) - Director of Genomics at Quest Diagnostics (The world’s largest reference laboratory with a market capitalization of over $10 billion US) (2003-2006) - Director of Research and Development at Spectral Genomics (one of the industry’s first commercial genomic microarray developers spun out of Baylor College of Medicine under Dr. Mansoor’s scientific leadership) Dr. Mansoor maintains an active clinical practice as a genomics consultant to some of the leading executive health clinics in Canada and abroad. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What makes each DNA test different and how to choose what's right for you...9:30 Consider the various elements of genetic testing: SNPs (pronounce "snips"; single nucleotide polymorphisms) Copy number variation (CNV) INDEL (insertion/deletion polymorphism) Understand how the various labs go about testing the elements Humans have two identical copies of the DNA code (from each parent) When testing for SNPs, the genetic paragraph is "read" and looks for variations between the two The more paragraphs you try to query simultaneously, the greater risk of error (false negatives/positives) Characteristics of a proper DNA test: Concern is for the physical manifestation of the genes, not the genes themselves Cellular function is key indicator Identify the genes that influence the desired outcome Pinpoint the specific DNA to test vs. "shotgun" approach Avoid drawing data for data's sake -A review of Ben's DNA test and how they compare to his two sons...25:00 Two different reports: Genome Pulse Report and Hormone Pulse Report (looking at the GPR) Vascular function Cells that line the vascular system receive the most wear and tear 9P21 markers (not genes) are correlated with the lining of the blood vessels; "the heart of the human genome" A alleles and G alleles The more G alleles you have, the less resilient is the endothelial lining Increase good quality vegetable matter People with multiple G alleles benefit less from vegetable matter (like red wine) than those with none Smokers are more likely to die of vascular disease than lung disease Glutathione S-Transferase (GST) pathway is one of the key pathways in the body Glutathionization: the cellular process that neutralizes toxins in the body What happens when someone doesn't have 2 copies of a gene... You sometimes have genes you didn't inherit from either parent Talking about SNPs in the gene is irrelevant; As is epigenetics (alter the expression of the genes, not the genes itself) 3 vitally important GST genes: Theta 1, Pai 1, Nu1 Should a person only have 1 copy of a gene, they will produce 50% less than someone with 2 copies Ben Greenfield has 1 copy of the GSTT1 gene (as does 60% of the population) Important to not exceed a healthy toxicity threshold Ben Greenfield does not have the GSTM1 gene at all Useless to discuss SNPs for that gene The M1 gene is a backup: it can be lost with less consequence than other genes (such as the T1) What this means is that Ben Greenfield has low to average glutathione detox capacity Must be more cognizant of diet, environment, etc. Ben's two boys are missing the GSTT1 gene completely -Personalizing diet and/or supplements based on DNA test results...57:25 Youtrients [link] Nothing compares to an optimal diet (eating whole foods) Customized based on dietary limitations (lactose intolerance) Ethnic and geographic factors, as well as the environment during weaning, affect how to interpret test results Elites of Victorian era England adjusted their lifestyle (living in Scottish highlands in the autumn months) Reduce, not promote, supplementation, to where only necessary Our bodies are not designed to accommodate many of the supplements on the market "Is there a cellular function that is dysfunctional?" Then address that through supplementation More is not always better when it comes to genetics 3 disparate aspects of cellular function: Endothelial quality Detox capacity Insulin productivity and function in response to diet -Differences between the hormone pulse report and the genome pulse report...1:18:25 BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor) is one of the most important genes in our body First thing looking at: How does the body (male or female) convert progesterones into androgens, into estrogens t-intersection (4 points): How efficiently converting progesterone into androgens 3 things happen when you make testosterone: Use it Convert some of it into DHT Metabolize (glucuronidation) Ben has the perfect balance of the t-intersection Ben's boys are identical, except have a higher predisposed conversion of testosterone into estrogen -About the ACTN3 gene and its relation to exercise types...1:28:50 -And much more... They offer their complete functional genomics test package for $399 USD (that’s a savings of $50 from retail price), and your test package includes both Hormone and Genome Pulse panel tests as well as a clinical report for each panel, along with full access to their webinar series, which introduces the science and interpretation of your genomic results with regards to key biological systems and processes. 16 Reasons You're Not Burning Fat (& How To Lose Weight The Right Way)

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar
    add

Several months ago, I filled you in on "The 2 Best Ways To Burn Fat Fast (Without Destroying Your Hormones Or Metabolism)". But what you learned in that article only scratched the surface of the multiple mechanisms underlying why the human body can be resistant to fat loss, and how to achieve truly sustainable, long-lasting weight loss in a safe and efficient manner. So during today's solosode, you'll discover... -How fat actually gets burnt...6:20 Law of conservation of mass: Mass, in an isolated system, is neither created nor destroyed by chemical reactions or physical transformations Fat is primarily disposed of via the breath Calories, as well as excess carbs and proteins, are converted into triglycerides and stored in lipid droplets of adipocytes Excess dietary fat undergoes lipolysis, and then reesterification Triglycerides are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen Oxidation: requires inhalation of oxygen Study: When someone loses weight, where does the fat go? For 22 pounds of fat to be oxidized, 64 pounds of oxygen must be inhaled Results in 61 pounds of carbon dioxide excreted via the lungs and 24 pounds of water excreted via urine, sweat, feces, and breath Average of 17,000 breaths per day will excrete .32 lbs of carbon Sources of carbon (other than eating coal) are: dietary carbs, proteins, and fats If you didn't get all that, get this: Losing fat means consuming less carbon than you've exhaled. Even small quantities of food can foil your efforts at weight loss. The simple solution is to move more and eat less. The 16 reasons you're not burning fat the way you'd like – Chronic Inflammation...12:35 High levels of transforming growth actor beta cause irregular appetite and glucose regulation Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP): calcium-dependent zinc-containing endopeptidases Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF): Aids in the growth of new blood vessels; correlated with obesity Nitric oxide synthase Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) = meta inflammation Nos uncoupling (genetic factors) StrateGene Tree of Life, Bob Miller's site Sugar can be inflammatory but is more quickly metabolized than things like vegetable oil Chronic stress is a factor: overstimulation of the limbic system Cell Danger Response (CDR) Toxic by Neil Nathan Dr. Robert Naviaux – Glycemic variability (GV)...21:05 Refers to the blood glucose variations during the day If GV gets out of control, the body does one of two things: transfers sugar into muscles, or stores as body fat It will become fat tissue if you're not active enough throughout the day Be "ruthlessly" cognizant of blood sugar fluctuations 6 Strategies to control GV Strength training Pre-breakfast fasted cardio Book: Change Your Schedule, Change Your Life  Post-prandial walk Standing Plants, herbs, spices Ceylon cinnamon Gymnema sylvestre Berberine Apple cider vinegar Kion Lean Fiber – Cortisol and stress...30:45 Cortisol suppresses insulin secretion Measure heart rate variability (HRV) Oura Ring (Save $50 with code: GREENFIELDOURA) Podcast with building biologist Brian Hoyer Podcast Ep. 397 – Sleep deprivation...34:20 A single night of partial sleep can be deleterious Neuro endocrine effect: reduces levels of leptin; increases levels of ghrelin – Snacking and post-workout calories...35:25 "Grazing" or 6-8 small meals per day is a myth Snacking increases your GV and eliminates benefits of fasting Your body releases more growth hormone during intermittent fasting Grazing throws metabolism into sugar burning mode It takes 3 days, or 4 weeks of extreme calorie restriction for the body to down regulate metabolism The need for protein and carbs right after a workout is a myth The exception: two a day workouts – You're not moving enough...39:47 Fool your body into thinking it's in the "hunter gatherer" mode – Too much exercise...41:30 Excessive exercise, along with other stressors can lead to increased levels of cortisol and inflammation Beyond Training by Ben Greenfield Too much of the same exercise Not enough recovery days Sweet spot: 2-3 days per week, lift heavy stuff 2-3 days high-intensity interval training – Chronic cardio...43:35 Your body will catabolize muscle and store fat High-intensity cardio 2-3 days per week Reduced subcutaneous adiposity of body fat among people who follow these guidelines – The SAID Principle...46:00 Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands Sometimes the best workout plan is the one you're not currently doing Keep the body guessing 5 modifications: Combine exercises Article "complex exercises" Active rest periods Train outside Change the center of gravity Workout at a different time of day – Lack of cold therapy...50:00 Cold is a strong metabolic stimulus Cold thermogenesis occurs when protons are forced across the inner membrane and turned into heat Beige adipose tissue Every day, 2-5 minutes cold exposure (cold shower, cold river or lake) 3x3 cold coolfatburner.com (Use code: BEN10CFB to save 10%) – Hormonal imbalance...52:25 Dutch Test Podcast w/ Jay Campbell Estrogeneration by Anthony Jay – Toxin and chemical exposure...54:40 – Food allergies and intolerances...56:30 – Micro-nutrient deficiencies... CBD & Cannabis Special Episode: How CBD Affects Hormones, Fat Loss, Athletic Performance, Sleep, Recovery & Much More

It's cannabis time! The “Kentucky Castle” is a unique destination hotspot with a full biohacking facility, sauna, farm-to-table restaurant, precision medicine arm, hemp farm, horse facilities, and much more. It is owned by one of the physicians who hosts the “Wild Health” podcast, on which I was recently a guest. Recently, at the castle, I had the pleasure of giving a talk on how to hack your biology and get the most out of the genetics you were born with. Afterward, I took part in a Q&A with several of the physicians in attendance at the conference, which you can also listen to here. The Search For The Perfect Protein (The Surprising Truth About A Little-Known Supernutrient For Weight Loss, Mood, Fatigue, Insomnia, and More)

In today's podcast episode, we unpack all things amino acids... "...Five months after beginning the amino acids, I achieved a personal best at Ironman Canada, in Penticton B.C. In my new and improved physical state, I began to wonder if my vegetarian, protein- deficient diet was the reason why the anti-cancer enzymes scorched my stomach. Could it be that the mucous lining in my stomach was inadequate, and that had also held back the healing of my hamstring? I very badly wanted to find out, so I decided to try the enzymes again. I followed the full protocol, twelve tablets, six times per day for three consecutive days. I had no adverse reactions, and my stomach was fine. I learned that because my overall body protein levels had normalized, the mucous layer in my stomach was better able to handle the enzymes. What a revelation! I thought, could this also be a key problem with my patients and their various conditions? " Thus begins the new book "The Search For The Perfect Protein", by 42 time Ironman triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then completed both a Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children's Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1995, his wife became ill, and her physicians couldn't find what was wrong. Not accepting their "no hope" conclusion, Dr. Minkoff went on a search to help her that led him out of emergency medicine into complementary and alternative medicine to find the answers. In the process he gained expertise in Biological medicine, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy and optimum nutrition. He studied under the masters in each of these disciplines until he became an expert in his own right. The answers he found were soon in demand when others learned of his wife’s return to good health. In response to this, he and his wife, Sue Minkoff RN established Lifeworks Wellness Center in 1997 and it quickly became one of the most comprehensive complementary and alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. The demand for the products and protocols he discovered became a catalyst for founding BodyHealth.Com, a nutrition company that now manufactures and distributes these cutting-edge solutions for the many health problems today. Dr. Minkoff writes two free online newsletters, “The Optimum Health Report” and ”The BodyHealth Fitness Newsletter”, to help others learn about optimum health and fitness. In my conversation with Dr. Minkoff, you'll learn... -Dr. Minkoff's history with amino acids and why he wrote his new book... The science behind amino acids and protein wasn't keeping up with the commercial PR and marketing Strained a hamstring while running an Ironman triathlon in 1982 Tried everything possible to no avail Tried amino acids and felt no pain, no discomfort Max heart rate rose by 12 bpm Muscle and bone tissue filled in A patient who was familiar with natural cancer treatment recommended a pancreatic enzyme treatment; had very negative results He then supplemented it with essential amino acids and was perfectly fine Saw potential cure for other problems patients may be having (that are not cancer) ION profile with 40 amino acids - Genova Kit He realized that if it was effective for him, it would be beneficial for others He now sees amino acids as an essential element of a workout and proper recovery Vegans and vegetarians are notoriously deficient in aminos, B12, Iron and other nutrients Highly recommend an Amino supplement -About CHYMO, the thyroid and its interaction with amino acids... Chymotrypsin: an enzyme made in the pancreas that is necessary to digest food Actin: the main protein in muscle; Contains 5800 different amino acids in one chain of the muscle fiber Must be broken down into individual amino acids in order for the intestine to absorb it Vicious cycle: amino acids not enough to make chymotrypsin; can't digest protein properly; amino acids can't get into the bloodstream Many people are iodine deficient Also low in tyrosine (made from the essential amino acid phenylalanine) These are common issues -The link between amino acids/proteins and the gut and digestion... The inner lining of the intestine is one cell thick Leaky barrier membranes: your body gets exposed to foreign proteins 70-80% of your immune system is behind the membrane barrier (Peyer's patches, gut associated lymphoid tissue) Inner lining of the gut has a high turnover (every 3-5 days) due to the exposure, wear and tear, etc. Leakage occurs when these membranes are not replaced Lack of amino acids slows the turnover rate (10-12 days) Endurance training compromises the immune system due to the pounding on the body -How amino acids are used by riders in the Tour de France bike race... Podcast: How Tour de France racers make it through the grueling stages w/ Dr. Jeff Spencer Dr. Spencer is a former Olympic biker who worked for the U.S. team during the Lance Armstrong era Minkoff gave Spencer amino acids to give to the riders during one of the races: After 21 days, athletes are broken down, even with optimal nutrition, medical care, etc. Athletes who used amino acids didn't break down; performance improved Athletes and coaches overwork and don't allow adequate recovery time; results in a broken immune system -Why not derive amino acids from whey protein, spirulina and other sources?... The amount of protein listed on the package doesn't translate to amounts in other sources (fish, steak, spirulina, etc.) Medication to stop stomach acid stops protein digestion Pepsin enzyme which digests protein requires a very acid stomach Cells have two pathways with which to deal with the amino acids: Anabolic: Turns amino acids into the proteins the cell is responsible for (hair, liver, muscle etc.) Catabolic: Nitrogen becomes a waste product; chain leftover looks like a carbohydrate Ratio of essential amino acids in Kion Aminos is very specific; the body will use amino acids into making protein Nitrogen utilization study Spirulina is good for some things; amino acids is not one of them Adding non-essential amino acids decreases the efficacy of the product Collagen has 50% non-essential amino acids -The chemical configurations of amino acids... The body can only use the "left-handed" configuration (L form) Most amino acid forms have very low amino acid utilization because they include the R form -How amino acids work with fasting and/or ketosis... You can take amino acids and not spike blood glucose levels Excessive proteins will kick you out of fasting is a myth Amino acids work very well for fasting in an anabolic state 10 g of amino acids is 4 calories (less than a stick of gum) -How safe amino acids are for children... -And much more... Water & Water Filtration: Everything You Need To Know About Water Filters, Alkaline Water, Structured Water, Hydrogen Rich Water, Deuterium Depleted Water & Much More!

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar
    add

I get tons of questions about water. What water filter is best? Should I add minerals to my water? What do you think about alkaline water? Structured water? Hydrogen rich water? Deuterium depleted (DDW) water? And much more... So on this podcast, I interview one of the world's leading experts on water and a guy who, along with my father Gary Greenfield, has taught me more about water than just about anyone I know. His name is Robert Slovak. Robert is a degreed Mechanical and Aeronautical & Astronautical engineer best known for co-founding Water Factory Systems in the early 1970’s. He and his brother were among the early developers of Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology and its many applications. Their successful innovations encompassed home and office RO drinking water systems, bottled water production, laboratory purification, hemodialysis, seawater desalination, microchip production, bottled water production, water vending, spot-free vehicle washing and scores more. As a result of the rapid growth of RO applications, Robert’s ongoing seminars and a best-selling industry book on the subject of POU (Point of Use) RO, he became a well-known figure in the water industry. In 1989 Water Factory Systems was purchased by CUNO Inc, a global leader in fluid treatment. Since then, it was acquired by the 3M Corporation, which continues to market many of their original products. Robert officially retired from the US water industry in 1996 and went on to bring his knowledge and experience to Brazil, Asia and other international markets. He put together a team and published Agualatinomerica magazine to establish a legitimate water equipment and education infrastructure in Brazil and South America. His “students” continue to play a major role in Brazil’s water industry. In 2004, while in a remote location of Brazil, Robert became seriously ill and was introduced to an obscure 1897 medical discovery known as Original Quinton Marine Plasma (after the famous revolutionary biologist René Quinton). Robert attributes his "jungle" survival to its remarkable healing properties. This ocean-harvested nutraceutical contains the entire Periodic Table of organo-complexed minerals & trace elements as well as essential and rare micronutrients and has been continuously produced for more than a century. Having been an avid student of health and nutrition science for decades, Robert recognized the remarkable history and efficacy of Quinton Marine Plasma in supporting a wide range of the most difficult health conditions and has distributed Quinton Marine Plasma to leading-edge clinics and health practitioners worldwide since 2008. For the past nine years Robert’s focus has been on bringing a new nutraceutical breakthrough called “Molecular Hydrogen” (H2) to the medical profession and health-minded consumers. This “smallest molecule in the Universe” has been overlooked for its remarkable health benefits until now. With more than 800 worldwide health studies on the subject, physicians, researchers and clinicians have been proclaiming Molecular Hydrogen (H2) as the most unique and versatile antioxidant and signaling molecule. In 2010 Robert co-developed a practical way for everyone to benefit from this discovery by creating the first reactive hydrogen tablet that infuses water with a supersaturated concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2) gas. This proven nutraceutical is now in its 9th year of distribution in both professional medical and consumer markets. In 2011 Robert became a founding investor in the Quicksilver Scientific Corp. that was developing a groundbreaking new technology to deliver nutrients and nutraceuticals to the cells. It is referred to as nano-encapsulated liposomes. In just a few years, Quicksilver Scientific established its scientific dominance in this growing field and is currently expanding its product scope and global distribution. While attending medical and wellness conferences throughout North America, Robert recognized the persistent minefield of water-related misinformation encountered by doctors, patients and consumers alike – that’s after spending nearly 50 years in the water technology industry. This unsettling experience soon turned into the motivation to do something about it and Water & Wellness was established in 2017. A team with more than 150 years of combined experience was assembled to create a product line of advanced Point of Use (POU) and Point of Entry (POE) water treatment systems for health and wellness minded consumers. In addition, a line of synergistic water additives was formulated for the consumer market including Quinton and QuintEssential minerals & trace elements, Active pH Restore alkalizing mineral powder, Active H2 ULTRA molecular H2 tablets and Active Ribose C high-bioavailability vitamin C. Recently, Robert’s 25-year interest in Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW) took a new direction forward. With a combination of Soviet-era research from the 1960's and recent announcements explaining the profound physiological benefits of water with reduced Deuterium content, Robert decided to act quickly in making a reliable and affordable supply available in North America. Soon, health practitioners and health-minded consumers will be able to obtain the most deuterium depleted Litewater brand DDW through soon-to-be-announced channels nationwide. Robert continues to be a very active international figure in the rapidly expanding water technology, wellness and anti-aging community, making appearances and presentations worldwide. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why and how Robert went from the aerospace industry into the water industry... Robert and his brother Jack were both working in the military industrial complex and were just plain bored to tears They became aware of a new technology called membrane separation, aka reverse osmosis They were pioneers in water systems in homes and restaurants, to micro electronics manufacturing Built the first hemodialysis system (portable dialysis) Didn't invent reverse osmosis, but refined and developed products that used it (the spot-free rinse being the most famous) -How a near-death experience made Robert aware of a forgotten scientific discovery that led to his current work... In 2004, Robert came down with gastroenteritis after moving to Brazil in retirement Was given by a local man 6 vials of quinton marine plasma, a harvested extract of plankton from the ocean This is what they used in the absence of proper health care in that area Was first discovered in 1897 Percutaneous Hydrotomy: a protocol used to treat serious conditions such as a damaged spine Not to be used as a supplement of injectable for general wellness Super hydrating a specific location with sea water Plankton bloom: one of the most complex bioreactors Make about 65% of the oxygen on earth Heavily protected by national and international governing bodies Robert's brother and business partner passed away in 2016; passed on the license to Quinton to Quicksilver Scientific Water and Wellness -The secrets to Robert's youthful physical appearance... Quinton Moderate exercise Grounded with the earth Strict paleo dietary regimen (see below for details) Trace elements (from the Quinton) 40+ supplements taken daily (see below for details) -How to set up the ideal water filtration system in your home... Always find out what exactly is in your water (EPA water quality report for local water company) Filtration system, temperature, etc. all matter in the quality Two methods for removing the greatest number of contaminants: Distillation + activated carbon Reverse osmosis + activated carbon Then remineralize the water (quinton, trace liquid minerals, Celtic sea salt) Why Celtic sea salt, and not another type of sea salt? Jacques DeLangre (founder of Celtic) was a student of Rene Quinton himself Celtic is not rinsed. When you rinse salt, you rinse away 30-40 trace elements Himalayan sea salt is an underground salt mine; has iron oxide contamination The best water filtration systems on the market: AquaTru water filter AquaTru minerals Sanitize the storage tank minimum once a year, and every time you change filters Incubators for huge levels of bacteria SteriPen portable water purifier WoW (Water on Water) under the counter filtration system LED and UV sterilization is coming soon -Robert's take on alkaline water... He's against it; has been for 7+ years It's "the scientific misconception that became a multi-billion dollar business" The engineer who conceived of it didn't know the distinction between "alkaline" and "alkalinity" Another misconception in how "ph" levels affect acid in the water Match vs. fireplace: which will heat your home? Once you drink alkaline water, the body will change the ph level dramatically Alkalinity comes from adding trace minerals which have a buffering capacity: carbonates and bicarbonates Fresh green juices are a great way to alkalize the body (no ph levels) PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load) Chart -Robert's take on structured water... Refers to the molecular configurations the water molecules take on that are purported to have some physiological significance These arrangements are very fickle; they change every second It fails when you drink it; no structuring can survive the stomach (remember, it can dissolve a steak) There have been no studies that show consistent physiological benefits The only structuring Robert would consider is vortexing -And what about hydrogen-enriched water?... Robert created the very first hydrogen reacting tablet in 2010 Not to be confused with hydride ions (which Robert erroneously did from the outset) Tyler LeBaron (listen to my podcast with him) set the record straight You can combine Quinton minerals with h2 tablets -What is deuterium, and what is deuterium-depleted water... The hydrogen in water consists of 3 isotopes: protium, deuterium, tritium (which is of little consequence) Deuterium is twice as heavy as protium (the only isotope that has that large a disparity with its sister isotope) Water is actually 3 different molecules: H2O, HdO, and D2O There are 150 deuteriums for every 1 million protiums in water When water is made with deuterium, it's called "heavy water" (it's used to power nuclear power facilities and make nuclear bombs) America won the race to extract the deuterium from regular water during World War 2 Unusual biological effects of deuterium-depleted water on plants and animals: Increases in life span, Growth rates, Survival and diseases Russian scientists reported this, they were not taken seriously by the global scientific community Many variations or levels in which deuterium can be removed from water and still be considered "depleted" Incredibly complicated process of removing deuterium from water A camel produces deuterium-depleted water naturally; it's why they can survive without water for weeks in the desert -And much more! Young Blood Transfers For Anti-Aging, Alzheimers, Parkinson's & More: The Future Of One Of The Most Cutting-Edge Medical Protocols That Exists

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar
    add

You've no doubt heard of controversial "young blood transfers", made popular of late in the anti-aging and longevity industry by articles such as: -Questionable “Young Blood” Transfusions Offered in U.S. as Anti-Aging Remedy -New Yorkers will soon be able to have the blood of 16- to 25-year-olds transfused into their body. But does it actually do anything?  -Startups Flock to Turn Young Blood Into an Elixir of Youth But what has completely flown under the radar is the fact that plasma transfusions of young blood have been found in clinical research studies to have never-before-seen effects on chronic health conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autoimmunity and many others.  In today's podcast, with Mark Urdahl and his lead nurse Gloria, you'll get never-before-heard breakthrough information on how young blood transfusions really work for these conditions, along with their true effects on anti-aging and longevity. Mark Urdahl, one of my guests on this podcast, serves as Chairman and CEO of the Young Blood Institute, a non-profit corporation conducting clinical trials in the use of therapeutic plasma exchange as a modality to systemically prevent cellular senescence and the onset of associated immunological, neurological, and cardiovascular disorders. Mr. Urdahl and his team at the Young Blood Institute have also pioneered the concurrent use of the world’s most advanced, state-of-the-art, ultrasensitive, high-precision blood serum measurement technologies to capture comprehensive “big data” of the human body, an unprecedented combination of testing technologies in human medicine or human clinical research, in order to understand never-before-seen correlations which might lead to discovery of root causes of age-associated disorders. He began his career with IBM Biomedical Systems, which, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, invented the world’s first automated blood cell separator, first commercially produced by IBM in the 70’s as the IBM 2997. After IBM sold its Biomedical Systems business unit to COBE Laboratories in 1984, Mr. Urdahl became a systems engineer supporting IBM large systems accounts, including notable innovators in health care management. Mr. Urdahl went on to lead a distinguished career at IBM, where he held management positions in marketing and sales, technology development, corporate development. After IBM, he founded Applied Science Fiction (ASF), a digital imaging company where he served as Chairman and CEO, overseeing the development of over 150 patent applications and licensing its technology to nearly every major imaging OEM worldwide, including Nikon, Agfa, Minolta, and many others. Mr. Urdahl subsequently formed the Young Blood Institute as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation to research anti-aging therapies under clinical trials, recruiting world-class principal investigators, establishing a nation-wide network of nurses and private care physicians, creating the most advanced biomarker testing platform in the world, and developing a “big data” database capable of storing data in the cloud in perpetuity. In 2008 Mr. Urdahl led an investment group to acquire the storage network monitoring business unit of Finisar Corp, including a portfolio of 20+ patents/applications, to form a privately held company, Virtual Instruments. He subsequently formed the Young Blood Institute to research anti-aging therapies under clinical trials, recruiting world-class principal investigators, establishing a nation-wide network of nurses and private care physicians, creating the most advanced biomarker testing platform in the world, and developing a “big data” database capable of storing data in the cloud in perpetuity. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The history of the world's first blood cell separator... Invented by George Judson in 1965 after his son was diagnosed with leukemia Blood cells were separated manually; very laborious IBM funded this research and many other inventions that have benefited humanity Taber's Medical Encyclopedia -What is blood cell separation and exchange?... Similar to a PRP draw Blood drawn from one arm; spun around in centrifuge; separates red, white, plasma (by gravity); Machine can draw whichever component you want (platelets, plasma, red cells, etc.) Blood is reinserted into the arm sans whichever component you want (ex. plasma) and new plasma is inserted via IV New plasma comes from various sources: actual plasma and purified plasma components Broke college kids donate plasma for gas money (creating a very large plasma pool) Water is taken out of the plasma; what's left is albumin, immunoglobulins, fibrinogen Similar to frozen lemonade (just add water) -How Mark became interested in the transfer of young blood... Was involved in several high-tech yet unfulfilling tasks; desired to do more for humanity Heterochronic parabiosis: the joining of two mice together, one old, one young Systemic milieu Findings of mouse research: There was one solution (young blood) to multiple problems; however, each problem had its own funding, infrastructure, bureaucracy, etc. Both parties are affected: younger deteriorate; older improve Initial goal: reboot the immune system for people over the age of 50 -Why the Young Blood Institute operates as a non-profit organization... Humanitarian research No proprietary issues such as IP, Much learning that yet needs to occur For profit companies naturally focus on profit; Can be contradictory to the idea of research and discovery Takes years for truths to emerge (because of investors, stock, etc.) -The philosophy behind the research and work at the Young Blood Institute... Janko Nikolich-Žugich - The immunobiologist at the YBI Valid clinical evidence requires data How do you prove you've prevented something? By proving it existed in the first place Anecdotal data suggests the effects of plasmapheresis extends beyond the indication that is being treated Cast a wide net, gather as much data as possible (treat the whole elephant) What biomarkers are being tracked: Standardized patient care physical exams Muscle biopsies Muscle function Neurological/cognitive function Many more All tests done before the young blood transfer Not trying to cure; trying to prevent Don't test for telomeres because it's testing whole blood Each cell subset has different telomere lengths Wide disparity in test results Cells are aware of changes in environment, not calendar times -A dramatic real-life example of 2 70-year old Youngblood Institute patients... The plasma that was withdrawn was rather putrid looking After 2-3 treatments (removing old plasma, injecting young plasma) the plasma condition normalized Getting rid of the old plasma really matters Decrease in whole blood viscosity Low shear viscosity: "stickiness" of the blood -What is "big data of the body"?... Digital biomarkers: Apple Watch, HRV, sleep cycles, etc. Unprecedented ensemble of data assembled in one place Correlations (meta data) Data is mined over time -The government's intervention in this type of technology... FDA shut down a for-profit company in the field Mark supports the FDA's action and caution Infusions are additive; can cause circulatory overload YBI does a transfusion; blood volume stays constant Mark doesn't fear an FDA shutdown of the Youngblood Institute because they are in agreement with and support their actions -How something called a "neuro protocol" may lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of Alzheimers... Article: Plasma exchange for Alzheimer's disease Management by Albumin Replacement (AMBAR) trial: Study design and progress An extension of current protocol: 6 treatments over a 6 week period Add a partial monthly treatment for 12 months Mark's lead nurse, Gloria, was the lead on the AMBAR study, and had shocking stories to tell Could potentially lead to treatment of Parkinson's and ALS 60% success in arresting the development of Alzheimers The End of Alzheimer's by Dr. Dale Bredesen Proper clinical trial: unbiased investigators who look at data, not the subjects -The role of a head nurse in a plasma transfusion... It's largely a nurse's procedure Top 6 nurses at the YBI have 230+ years of experience Get lead physicians observations; head nurse will sometimes provide that for them Interact with patients and get their observations Alzheimers affects the family of the patient more than the patient (due to their loss of memory) -Gloria's observations treating patients, both with the AMBAR study and at the YBI... "Early results on Parkinson's and ALS patients are very encouraging" Grifols did a placebo test on patients: Patients already had minimum mild level of Alzheimers "Sham" is used in the best possible sense Patients perceived they were receiving the treatment when they were not Treated over 180 subjects over a four year period One patient in particular deteriorated rapidly while on the sham study "Predictive biomarkers" are used to admit patients into the YBI treatments Some of the good stories: Orchard farmer in his 80's showed remarkable improvement after approx. 8 months (18 treatments) Woman who just turned 60, lost her joy for life; after 2 months, daughter reported amazing progress; flirting with everyone after 5 months Patients regain previously lost memories -Can apheresis be used as an anti-aging treatment even if one doesn't have Alzheimers?... "Apparent health" can be a misnomer; all of a sudden someone can have 3 major diseases YBI doesn't treat patients as young as 30 years old Alzheimers, Parkinson's, ALS symptoms begin very young -Why these studies and treatments are still occurring more or less behind the scenes... -And much more... Dangerous Probiotic Myths, The Probiotic Ben Greenfield Uses, Anti-Aging Effects Of Probiotics, Should Males Vs. Females Take Different Probiotics & Much More

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar

Do probiotics really seed or populate your gut? How do you decide which strain or species of probiotic to take? Do certain compounds enhance the efficacy of probiotics? Should probiotics be personalized? I tackle all these probiotic questions and many more in today's episode with Raja Dhir. Raja the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seed, an ecosystem of kindred scientists, doctors, innovators, entrepreneurs, and translational storytellers from around the world. Seed's members collectively believe in the potential of the microbiome to improve human and planetary health. Raja leads Seed’s research strategy and academic collaborations, clinical trial design, product development, and intellectual property strategy. He is the architect of the Seed Platform and has unique expertise in translating scientific research for product development – including patented inventions to stabilize sensitive compounds to improve human microbiome diversity and inflammatory biomarkers. He’s also the Co- Chair of Seed’s Scientific Advisory Board where Seed focuses on solving complex ecological problems including honeybee colony collapse, plastic degradation, and soil fertility through bacteria. Raja is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Church Lab in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and is a Director and Co-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for Micropia, a $20MM microbial ecology / education platform and the world’s first museum dedicated exclusively to microbes. He also serves on the Editorial Board for the scientific journal, Microbiome, on the Industry Advisory Committee for the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), and is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), among others. During our discussion, you'll learn: -Why we misunderstand probiotics, and especially probiotic research...8:30 Raja's research paper: Probiotics: What they are and what they are not We're understanding more and more about the gut and microbiome every day An organism must show that it has a specific effect on the body before the term "probiotic" can be used The term "probiotic" is unregulated in the United States Consumers are way ahead of the science Proper definition of a probiotic: live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host Unscientific research on probiotics has led to damage in credibility in the field Taking one single data set that's not causative and applying the results to the entire field is an unscientific practice -The recent studies on probiotics that Raja mentions, and sometimes criticizes, in his work...13:45 Conducted by the Weizmann Institute Got subjects to consent to invasive small intestinal biopsies, versus just the colon Ordinarily you test the large intestine only An over emphasis on testing stool samples Fallacy: Collecting large amounts of data will give you an accurate answer How classical biologists are different: Have a hypothesis, Narrow down an intervention, Test (in a large enough sample size) and look for biomarkers that change in the host How the test worked: Gave 3 groups of people large amounts of antibiotics Gave one group probiotics, one group allowed to recover spontaneously (watchful waiting), third group FMT; their own stool injected back in rectally Hypothesis: What's the fastest way of recovering to your normal base line? After 90 days, everything lost statistical significance; all 3 groups indistinguishable from one another 3 things you can do to improve an infant's health Vaginal birth Not having antibiotics during birth (if you have a c-section) Breast feeding Do at least 2 of the 3 correctly, you dramatically increase the chances that the infant's microbiome will develop normally Science should not be a sensationalistic field Temptation to exploit research for short-term PR gains -What regulations or standardizations exist when it comes to the microbiome and probiotics...23:25 Contract manufacturers: used by big dairy companies, big business, probiotics found in local grocery stores European facilities are better equipped due to dietary differences Species vs Strains: Ex: Chihuahuas and dobermans are different strains of the same species Some strains are up to 70% different from strains of the same species Must be tested on humans, otherwise should be called a microbial product vs. a probiotic product Some less disciplined companies benefit from the existing ambiguities in the probiotic field -Raja's answer to the flaws in probiotic research he discusses in his paper and in his work...27:15 The paper concludes with an optimistic view; possible changes in the next 5 years Click here for a table of Physiological and metabolic processes influenced by the human microbiome according to Raja's research paper. Activating a switch in the body that prevents and reverses food allergies Minimum requirements before anything should call itself a probiotic Declare the genus, the species and the strain Undergo minimum one human clinical trial If you didn't get all that, get this: While there is tremendous potential and reason for optimism in the field of probiotics, overuse of the term in the media and commercial use "cheapens" it and could discourage serious scientists from pursuing it to its full potential. -How (or if) probiotics interact with the microbiome...34:30 Article: Human gut study questions probiotic health benefits Probiotics are "transient microbes"; they don't take up permanent residence in any part of the body "Seeding" is the process by which an infants microbiome is first colonized by microbes Typical time a probiotic stays in the microbiome is ~8 weeks Daily consumption is necessary (kind of like coffee) Why not just eat fermented foods all the time? Only 4-5 out of several hundred bacterial strains in kimchi had probiotic potential (by the standards laid out in Raja's paper) Kombucha companies should do randomized controlled trials Terms like "immunity" and "anti-inflammatory" are misleading Certain bacteria can become "extinct" in as little as 4 generations when fiber is removed or reduced Certain populations do not need to take a probiotic because of their lifestyle and diet (ex. the Hadza people) "Detoxification" is oftentimes a misnomer; The body has its own detoxification pathways that are regulated by the nrf2 transcription factor Triggers for activation of the pathways: extended exercise, access to wide variety of phytonutrients, Things that are bad for you are good for you -The varying effects from different species and strains of probiotics...46:35 Biotransformational nutrients: take existing food particles and convert into secondary metabolites and unlock new nutrients Probiotics supplement the existing micronutrients and gut bacteria "Consuming little soldiers that make their own multi-vitamins" Pomegranate is standardized for punicalagin: turned by already existing bacteria in the gut into Urolithin A Article: Urolithin A induces mitophagy and prolongs lifespan in C. elegans and increases muscle function in rodents Potential anti-aging benefits Thesis: How can we unlock the power of microbes or bacteria to confer benefits to their human hosts -How probiotics affect males and females differently...52:35 Women have a longer digestive tract than men, which leads to more issues with the digestive system Females could benefit from a folate producer in their gut during pregnancy; would be out of place in a male Environment, diet are of far more significance than gender -Raja's take on companies who recommend particular probiotic strains to consume based on tests of the gut and microbiome...56:10 Still no consensus on what determines a healthy microbiome Recommending a particular product based on test results is problematic Genus vs. species vs. strain recommendations; the more specific the better results "Relative abundance" vs. "absolute abundance" Better approach: take specific strains identified to treat specific issues Stratification, personalized approach, is not the optimal goal The gold standard is a microbe that is applicable to the entire human (or mammal) population and has reproducible effects To conclude: There are some good things about microbiome tests; however, use caution when they recommend certain products based on the test results -Whether personalized microbiome testing will allow people to target a probiotic species for their specific gut profile...1:03:00 Yes, but it will not look anything like the probiotics that are on the market today Some organisms won't grow if other like organisms are not in the mixed community The gut is an ecosystem; ecosystem theory comes into play Diversity and seasonality of plants rich in phytonutrients and high fiber foods -The importance of the CFU (colony forming unit) of a probiotic...1:10:24 Depends on the study and the trial Shotgun approach: inject high density of organisms into the gut and hope for the best Before you take any probiotic... Ask the company to show the studies on their strains Have they been studied in a human population And for what end points -What Raja is most excited about with his work...1:18:10 Get 15% off your first order from SEED when you use discount code: GREEN15 -And much more... The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality.

    add

Most diet trends have one thing in common: they offer a one-size-fits-all approach and are not designed for your unique body and health history. Yet society insists time and time again on ordering the “diet du jour,” from low-carb/low-fat to the latest low-carb/high-fat diet. For many, it is not working – and, in some cases, it is harmful. But I recently read a book about a new approach to diet and living that is always on trend and in style, because it is customized to you and only you: The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality. This book introduces several evolved and sustainable concepts that are backed by science and supported by thousands of clinical outcomes from author Teri Cochrane, my guest on this podcast. Teri is an integrative practitioner and thought leader in nutritional counseling. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida, and she is a graduate of the Huntington College of Health Sciences and the National Leadership Institute. She also has extensive practices, such as healing touch, craniosacral therapy and herbology. She has developed her own methodology, "The Cochrane Method," which integrates a multi- level nutritional approach, including observation and listening, to develop a bio-individualized plan for her clients.  Teri is currently in private practice in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, where she specializes in complex health conditions and elite athletic performance. She serves as a nutritional counselor to ballerinas and Olympic hopefuls, including one of the most promising young swimmers in the country. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Terri came about the name "Wildatarian"...6:15 "Patient Zero" (real name is Glenn) had a rare form of cancer called amyloidosis Glenn was told to eat lots of protein after chemo; after two rounds, had congestive heart and kidney failure Realized the amyloids were coming from the food supply Took away pork, chicken, turkey; gave him wild game (bison, Cornish game hens, etc.) Wildatarians can be plant-based, meat-based; based on your genetic makeup Amyloids develop in farm-raised meats but not in wild game; they are indigestible Similar to an auto-immune issue This approach has helped treat Hashimoto's disease How to test for amyloids: Protein in urine Light chain (more accurate) -How Terri determines the appropriate diet for a patient...15:00 We're all bioindividual Genetic testing used: 23 and Me Many variants done in house Who should avoid sulfur in their diet Roundup (the pesticide) prevents sulfur in our food from becoming sulfate Kale is problematic Beware of sulfur-based supplements touted as antioxidants (glutathione) Center lane vs. "fringe" foods Focus on genetic blueprint first The body is a constant communicator; we're not learned in its tells -How Terri's clients access wild game, especially when living in urban areas...27:55 Dartagnan Foods (link) Major grocers are carrying bison, New Zealand lamb, etc. Opt for a sustainably raised approach to our animals Why is methane an issue today, after millennia of cows on the planet? They are being fed food they cannot digest Look for small and medium local farmers Organic standards have been diluted Wildatarian veggies are those which are suited to your genetic makeup Cilantro and cucumber juice is Terri's favorite drink -Why Terri frowns upon the intake of peanuts...34:35 An aflatoxin: "it's the devil on steroids" It's highly fungal (feeds cancer, candida) Peanut butter is the one food she'll never have on her plate She recommends sunflower butter -Why Terri loves beans and the best way to prepare them...39:22 Pressure cooker breaks down the "exoskeletons" of the beans Apple cider vinegar Green pepper helps break down the beans -What is "ballerina syndrome"...41:53 Terri works with the Washington Ballet Elite athletes push their bodies through epinephrine to manage the sugar regulation Epinephrine is a stress hormone, secreted by the adrenals It opens the gut, causes leaky gut syndrome It disregulates insulin -How an athlete, who consumes supplements, bars, etc. would do the wildatarian diet...46:00 -Where supplements and pills fit into the wildatarian diet...53:35 We don't have nutrient rich food Supplement strategically Wildatarian Quiz -And much more... I recently had the pleasure to speak at the fabulous and intriguing "Kentucky Castle", a unique destination hotspot with a full biohacking facility, sauna, farm-to-table restaurant, precision medicine arm, hemp farm, horse facilities and much more. The castle is owned by one of the physicians who hosts the "Wild Health" podcast, on which I was recently a guest. This is part one of a two part series that addresses the oft-confusing world of "taking your health into your own hands" via genetic testing, blood and biomarker tracking, sleep measurements and other forms of self-quantification. In part two, you'll get to sit in on a very interesting post-talk Q&A with myself and several of the physicians in attendance at the conference. How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age: The Longevity Paradox & The 7 Deadly Myths Of Aging

    Ben Greenfield Fitness starstarstarstarstar
    add

My guest on today's podcast and former guest on my show "The Truth About Lectins And The Plant Paradox", Dr. Steven Gundry proposes in his new book "The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age", that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; but rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well—one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies. He believes that - from diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age. Dr. Gundry is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world. During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division. Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe. Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an “inoperable” patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal. No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, which serves patients referred from across the nation. He is also Founder and Director of The Center for Restorative Medicine, part of the Institute. The Peptides Podcast: Everything You Need To Know About Anti-Aging, Muscle Gain, Fat Loss & Recovery Peptides.

I receive plenty of questions about peptides and SARMs, including: -How do peptides work? -What is the safety/side effects of peptides? -What are the best anti-aging peptides? -What are the best fat loss and muscle gain peptides? -What are the best recovery peptides? -What peptides work for cognition and neural enhancement? -How do you properly mix and administer peptides? -Do peptides need to be "cycled"? My guest on today's show, Jean-François Tremblay, comes highly recommended by former podcast guest and regenerative medicine physician Dr. Matt Cook as one of the world's leading experts on the wonderful world of peptides and SARMs. Dr. Tremblay studied Exercise Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. He has been investigating (in theory and in practice) peptides and SARMs since the 1990's and now makes peptides his main research subject. He has developed a wealth of expertise on peptides and SARMs and their practical applications in sports performance, anti-aging and health in general. During my discussion with Jean-François Tremblay, you'll discover: -The science of peptides and how they work...5:55 Amino acids linked together Growth hormone contains 191 amino acids When enough peptides link together, it becomes a protein Demistifying some of the myths surrounding peptides: They must be refrigerated at all times (only for certain peptides) Methionine bonds Most peptides are long chain, stable at room temp, More sensitive to light than heat (degradation more likely result of overexposure to light than heat) The "local effect" (BPC 157 and TB 500) -The pros and cons of various means of injecting peptides...15:15 Intra-nasal absorption is not 100%; however, what is injected has a better chance of reaching the brain Semax: Originally researched in USSR during the Cold War Russians are meticulous in their research; however, lacking in ethics Icarus documentary Researched on humans before other animals; published only after testing on animals -Peptide safety and side effects of use...21:30 Worst-case scenario of "overdosing" on peptides is that it simply doesn't work; no notable negative side effects Not the case with nootropics; you're messing with the brain's chemistry Bottom line: Don't throw caution to the wind. Be aware of proper dosages and administer correctly to the best of your knowledge -Legality and sourcing issues with peptides...32:15 99% of them come from China (even if the label says "Made in the USA") Chinese government dictates who produces what, such as peptides Chinese company released a growth hormone which was very effective, then replaced it with another (under the same name) that had negative side effects Scandinavian company was dishonest about dosage of melanotan (5 mg when advertised as 10 mg) There are only a couple of sources, albeit distributed by many different brands The bacteriostatic water included with the peptide should be crystal clear when it's added There's a reason for the high cost: equipment, repairs, etc. -Whether peptides need to be "cycled" in their use...44:00 Some, yes. It depends on the peptide Effect of BPC-157 lasts around 6 hours Effect of TB-500 lasts 10-15 days; but it's out of your system in 12 hours -Recommended anti-aging peptides...49:30 Epitalon The effects are not as immediate as peptides such as BPC-157 MOTS-c Humanan -The best peptides for fat loss...58:38 There is no "magic pill" Take care of the low hanging fruit: exercise, diet, etc. Tesamorelin (Egrifta) CJC-1295 (no dac version) -Recommended peptides for muscle gain...1:02:45 Nothing for non-competitive use Requires strict discipline and patience; marginal results at best -Jean-François' peptide regimen...1:04:51 Epitalon DSIP (affects the delta phase of sleep only) TB-500 (once a month) BPC-157 (once every couple of months) Thymus (timalin or vilon) twice a year Semax very occasionally -And much more... The Problem With Sleeping On Your Side, How To Sleep On Your Back, Little-Known Sleep Enhancement Tricks & Much More!

Over the past 20 years, my guest on today's show, Dr. Peter Martone, has been trying to recommend pillows for his patients that would put their head in the correct position so that they could get a great night's sleep and wake up rested. He could not find one, and he would have patients purchase soft down pillows and stuff them under their necks. He found that a conventional pillow would loose its shape and end up on the floor. The problem is that a pillow is for your head and you can not support your head to get a great night sleep. But one day he was watching the movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and the two actors came out of the room after “cuddling” all night. The camera gave a quick glimpse of the room they came out of. It showed what the two actors slept on, and to his amazement it was just a thin pad for their body and a block of wood in lieu of a pillow for their head. In that lightbulb moment, Dr. Martone invented the exact sleeping tool we discuss on today's podcast. He's one of the smartest guys I've ever talked to when it comes to sleep, so prepare to optimize your rest and recovery biomechanics like never before! During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon inspired Dr. Martone's invention... One of the props was a piece of wood, not as a pillow, but for their neck Peter had shoulder issues, couldn't identify the cause While camping, he used a shoe under his neck for sleeping; woke up well rested Used a shoe, and other odd objects for sleeping; shoulder and other health issues were resolved -Surprising problems caused by sleeping on one's side... 90% of Peter's patients have some type of damage to their cervical curve in the neck We lose the curve doing day to day activities, and there's nothing to repair it at night 98% of patients who lose the curve in their neck develop an unnatural curve in their lower back This eventually leads to scoliosis in the lower back The vermis portion of the brain: main function is to control the body's proprioception 80% of proprioception into the brain comes from the spinal cord The vermis atrophies due to loss of proprioception It affects the pre-frontal cortex (executive functioning) Decreasing the curve in the spine severely limits glymphatic drainage Why we toss and turn at night: Pain centers and nerve centers are very close together When you fall asleep on your side, you can only stay in that position for a short period of time Body should be in a "neutral sleeping position" Alcohol inhibits pain sensors. You stay in the same position longer, and wake up in pain OURA ring If you didn't get all that, get this: Loss of the cervical curve = degeneration of the spine. It also causes the vermis to atrophy, which negatively affects the pre-frontal cortex. Side sleeping causes pain and discomfort, which in turn affects the quality of our sleep. The advantages of sleeping on the back versus the side or stomach... Use a pillow for the neck rather than the head Restore the cervical curve and decrease lumbar tension -How to train yourself to sleep on your back... Just start on your back 1-2 hours per night will be enough to help restore the cervical curve in your neck Sleep wedge pillow: 5-10 degree angle, should go to the base of your spine Gravity beds on Amazon The podcast that discusses Gravity beds The body will eventually be able to go through the night on your back Total 2-3 month transition 650 down pillow Sleeping on your back, you distribute your body weight over the greatest amount of space -The little-known hack called "Remembering" that may help with sleep problems... Peter struggled to sleep due to numerous things he was thinking about Needed to be "in control" of something Visualized people sitting in a specific seat after giving a talk; he went right to sleep Focus on something, but don't think about it You can't think yourself to sleep; you have to remember yourself to sleep Dreams are how the mind categorizes the day's events The further back in time you can remember, the more efficacious this technique will be -Ways to control your core temperature while sleeping... Allostatic load: Hierarchy of needs in bodily functions (heart pumping vs. growing fingernails) Your body cares more about your core temperature than even the immune system We get sick because there's a finite amount of energy our body can distribute Maintaining the body's core temperature maintains the allostatic load in our entire body Keep your core as warm as possible; keep hands, feet and head exposed People like to sleep on their side so they can curl up, feel protected Use a weighted blanket for a similar effect "Head garage" Place a pillow over your head, just above the nose -More little-known sleep hacks... First 2 hours of the day are the most productive and alert The story of Edison's balls... Write things down, then go to sleep. You won't remember when you wake up The Pilot's Pen Think about "thinking about nothing" CBD Oil -And Much More...
