Some of Tori Robinson and Leah O'Malley's closest friends thought they would fail. Who's laughing now?
In today's episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery Francis catches up with the founders of Boys Lie. Their cool-girl loungewear broke the internet last summer when Ariana Madix from Vanderpump Rules wore their 1-800-Boys-Lie hoodie, not-so-subtly shading ex-boyfriend Tom Sandoval.
Their clothing has been spotted on A-listers like Kylie Jenner, Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and many more—plus they’ve collabed with Forbes, Uber, REVOLVE, Urban Outfitters and PacSun, which solidified Boys Lie as an industry trailblazer. In 2022, the brand achieved a staggering $8 million in revenue.
Tori and Leah met in 2016 when they were both going through breakups with their boyfriends—who happened to be best friends. They formed an unbreakable bond and coined the mantra: “boys lie.”
Today, the Boys Lie founders talk about how much money it *really* takes to start a clothing brand, how other people’s doubts fuelled their success and why it's so important to have a failure runway.

Imagine working at Amazon for 12 years and never getting a promotion. Imagine being called "stupid" to your face by a senior exec in a meeting. Imagine being so burned out by the toxic, relentless pace of your job that you take up an unhealthy drinking habit. Kristi Coulter experienced all of that—and more—in her decade+ at Amazon, arguably the world's best-known and most controversial company. Then she wrote a book about it.
Today's convo digs deep into corporate burnout, Jeff Bezos, why workplaces weren't built for women, and what happens on the other side of your "dream job."
Check out Kristi's two books: Exit Interview: The Life and Death of My Ambitious Career and Nothing Good Can Come from This.

  • In this (very spicy) episode of Girlboss Radio, host Avery Francis is joined with Liz Guber, Girlboss' general manager, and Victoria Christie, Girlboss' senior writer, to talk about the latest TikTok workplace trend: lazy girl jobs. What defines a lazy girl job? How does social media fuel misconceptions about them? What does this say about our disillusionment with capitalism and "hustle and grind" culture? Why is it a lazy girl job and not a lazy boy job? And who can really get away with having one?

It's a Girlboss Radio milestone—our first male guest. Ever.
So why a man and why now? Well, as our host, Avery Francis says, "Women and non-binary folks continue to carry the burden of conversations about moving the needle forward. I wanted to invite a man on the podcast to talk about how they're helping us achieve collective liberation."
While Girlboss Radio will always offer up our platform to women we admire, it's nice to get away from the echo chamber once in a while and hold conversations with guests we find interesting or can learn from—regardless of gender.
And now, about our guest: James J. Sexton, Esquire, is a no-BS divorce lawyer and author of If You're In My Office, It's Already Too Late: A Divorce Lawyer's Guide to Staying Together who's helped thousands of people navigate the endings of their relationships. In the past year, he's become a bit of a social-media sensation for his no-sugarcoating takes on marriage (he thinks it's overly-normalized in society), love (he's a hopeless romantic!) and prenups (he thinks they're essential).
On this special episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery and James unpack why women initiate the majority of divorces, James' views on eternal love and the things we should be all be discussing with our romantic partners before getting hitched. Plus, the starting cost of prenups and divorce litigation.
For an episode that's all about the end of love, we think you'll find it (oddly) uplifting and hopeful. Happy Valentine's Day!

  • "It's a scam." That's how Dr. Jen Gunter, the internet's favorite OB/GYN, describes Kourtney Kardashian's vagina probiotic gummies (called Lemme Purr).
You can see why we had to have Dr. Gunter on the podcast, right? She isn't afraid to dispel the BS women are being told about their bodies.
In today's episode, Dr. Gunter debunks the biggest myths about vaginas, from synching your period cycle to your productivity to needing to get rid of the (perfectly normal) smell with scented wipes and washes. It's a self-cleaning oven, people!

Dr. Gunter is an OB/GYN, pain medicine physician and New York Times best-selling author of The Vagina Bible and The Menopause Manifesto. Her brand-new book, Blood: The Science, Medicine, and Mythology of Menstruation is out now.

Ever since Avery became the host of Girlboss Radio, she's had one dream guest at the top of her wishlist. And that person is Soraya Chemaly. Soraya is an award-winning writer and activist, best known for her 2018 book Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger. Avery refers to it "The Bible" and has recommended it (and even gifted it) to hundreds of people.
In this episode, Avery and Soraya talk about why, as women, we're conditioned to minimize our anger (and replace it with words like “tired” or “stressed”), and how we can all harness the power of rage for the greater good.

Hey, Girlboss Radio listeners! Did you miss us? ‘Cause we missed you! Your favorite podcast is back. And we couldn’t think of a better person to kick-off the new season than Lilly Singh.
You probably know her. From her 2010 YouTube beginnings to a historic time on late night TV, Lilly now has over 40 million followers and owns a production company called Unicorn Island, which combines entertainment with social impact. She's an Emmy-winning entertainer, actress, producer, New York Times best-selling author and gender equality advocate, and is debuting her first feature film, Doin' It, this year.
We knew right away we wanted her to be our debut episode of season 3 and you’ll see why.
Avery and Lilly chat about how they first met (it involves a Shania Twain concert and jello shots), how discomfort and change are stepping stones to success, and why Lilly refuses to be put into a box.

Avery speaks to Lauren about her journey going from small-town Canada to becoming the fashion news editor at Glamour, a role where she pushed for size inclusivity in the magazine's content as well as what prompted her to start Henning, her luxury, size-inclusive fashion brand that was recently acquired by Universal Standard.

  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan never had a part-time job. She never worked retail, or had an after-school job in food service. The story of her actual first job is well known: she submitted a tape to Mindy Kaling’s open casting call for the series Never Have I Ever. She beat out 15,000 other applicants for the role, and has delivered a memorable, comedic, and authentic performance over the show’s last four seasons as Devi, the feisty, awkward and determined nerd—with aspirations of being popular. Devi was no stranger to making a reckless decision for the sake of good grades or chasing a boy.
Avery and Maitreyi chat about how her high school experience in Mississauga, Canada, (close to where Avery is from) was very different from Devi’s, the importance of having a tight inner circle to keep you grounded and her biggest lessons from Never Have I Ever as the show comes to an end.
Plus, Maitreyi opens up about the difficulties of making friends as an adult, and the boundaries she's had to put up to protect herself from being used for her fame.

  • Before you roll your eyes at the title of this week's episode—we get it. Influencing, a career that's emerged over the past decade, offers it all: the ability to make lots of money, flexibility, travel, adoring followers and flashy brand deals. But we know we're not the first ones to tell you that it's not all it's cracked up to be. On today's emotional episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery is joined by two of her friends: Jillian Harris and Sarah Nicole Landry for an unedited glimpse at the realities of running successful businesses by leveraging your online persona.
Jillian Harris got her start in restaurant design before becoming the first Canadian Bachelorette on reality TV. Sarah Nicole Landry blogged about motherhood as a divorced mom of three, before quitting her job in publishing to pursue content-creation full time. Today these women run multi-million dollar brands, employ staff and partner with the world's biggest companies. But there are downsides too: non-existent work-life-balance, time away from kids and husbands, near-constant online scrutiny of everything they do. "Sometimes I wonder why I'm still doing this," says Jillian Harris at one point in the convo.
This is not your typical influencer chat. But we think you'll be glad you tuned in.
Follow Jillian here, and Sarah, aka The Birds Papaya here.

  • Today on Girlboss Radio, Avery is joined by LaDavia Drane, the Global Head of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity at Amazon Web Services. Her career is nothing short of impressive, spanning law, politics, and tech. LaDavia has been a longtime leader and champion of removing barriers for underrepresented communities and cultivating equitable spaces.
Previously, LaDavia worked as a law associate, then transitioned to public policy and politics. She worked as a Chief of Staff in Congress, and even served on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
LaDavia and Avery chat about big career pivots and how to make your mark at a large company. Plus, LaDavia has some great advice for anyone who's itching to switch industries.

  • On this episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery chats with Emma Bates, the co-founder of Diem, the AI-powered search engine with "group chat energy." It's designed to give users real, no-BS, anecdotal advice on "taboo" topics like sexual health, money and relationships.
Emma went to King’s College in London for war studies. Yes, war studies. Then, she switched her major to marketing. During her university days, she started a blog that went viral.
Her career took off when she landed a job as one of the early hires at Away, the cool-girl suitcase brand. Then, a broken condom sparked the idea for Diem (you'll have to listen to the episode to learn more) and a community for women, femmes and non-binary folks to share knowledge was born.
Emma and Avery chatted about the complexities of the word ‘girlboss,’ the fear of getting canceled as a woman founder and how we can all solve the gender information gap.

  • On today's episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery chats with Adrien Bettio and Hyla Nayeri, the women behind the It girl swim and lifestyle brand 437. The co-founders met at university while studying commerce, and became fast friends and eventually, roommates. Hyla and Adrien were on a trip in the Amalfi Coast and they couldn't find swimsuits that were flattering and curve friendly. And thus, the idea for 437 was born. They were just 21 years old. Today, 437 is loved and worn by celebs like Kylie Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion and JLo, and appeared in Vogue and Forbes. The Forbes 30 Under 30 founders share how they started an ecommerce business with no business experience, the women who inspire them on their entrepreneurial journey and what it’s really like to go into business with your best friend.

  • This episode is sponsored by Kate McLeod

Kate McLeod has had a fascinating career journey with not one, not two but three career pivots. She started out in finance at Goldman Sachs, then went to culinary school and became a pastry chef. Then she started her own bakery in London.

Then, one day her sister-in-law introduced her to cocoa butter as a swap for her moisturizer. A powerful ingredient, cocoa butter (the fat of the cocoa bean) is rock-solid at room temperature. So what did Kate do? She used her pastry-chef skills to temper the butter with oils and lowering the melting point. She tinkered in her kitchen until the body stone was born, a solid moisturizer that glides onto the skin like silk. "I made the first 10,000 myself and packaged the canisters," she says.

On this episode of Girlboss Radio, Avery and Kate chatted about how Kate's rom-com-worthy love story (FYI: she's married to the founder and CEO of Hinge) informed her career journey, her hot takes on the beauty industry and why she hates the word success.

  • Yes, you read that right, $600,000. That's how much Vivian Tu was making as a strategy sales partner. Before that, Vivian cut her teeth on Wall Street as a trader with JP Morgan after graduating from the University of Chicago, the best economics school in the world.

During the pandemic, Vivian decided to quit her full-time job to start YourRichBFF because she noticed all of the questionable financial advice swirling around the internet. What started as a side-hustle has grown into a thriving business. Through her podcast, Networth and Chill, her newsletter EnRiched and her viral Instagram (@your.richbff) and TikTok accounts (@yourrichbff), Vivian shares no-BS financial advice in a tangible, approachable way.

Avery chats with Vivian about how she found a way to stand out as a Wall Street intern, the process of climbing "Cringe Mountain" to find her way to success as a content creator, and whether she's been able to match her former salary as a full-time content creator (we won't spoil that one for you). Oh, and Vivian dishes out some truly great financial tips, of course.

  • This episode is brought to you by Focus Features.

We're doing something different with this week's episode. Today, Avery has two separate chats with two women involved with our new fave film, Polite Society. First up is the film's director, Nida Manzoor, who talks about the power of women's rage, why we need to center girls as the stars of action films and how she handled years and years of rejection before finally get the green light to direct her dream project. The second half of the episode is a conversation with one of the film's leads, Ritu Arya. Ritu and Avery talk about Lena, the character Ritu portrays in the film, how it's ok not to have everything figured out and how an actor actually memorizes their lines (it's not what you think!).

And, seriously, Polite Society is a must-see. This highly anticipated movie from Focus Features follows Ria Khan, a Pakistani-British high schooler slash martial artist-in-training who plans a wedding heist to save her older sister, Lena, from her impending marriage. It’s a merry mash-up of sisterly affection, parental disappointment, and bold and bloody action. It's out in theatres on April 28th. • Today's episode features Avery's friend and notable Canadian entrepreneur, Michele Romanow. Michele is a founder many, many times over and a Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den (that's Canada's answer to Shark Tank, by the way). It was while she was on Dragons' Den that Michele got her idea for her best-known business to date: Clearco, a lending firm for businesses that takes a share of revenue instead of equity to give founders easier access to capital. Clearco has given billions to business owners to date, and has raised the bar for representing traditionally marginalized business owners.

Michele talks about her first-ever founder experience (she started a caviar farm on the East coast of Canada with a couple of friends straight out of school), why she truly never takes anything for granted and she gets candid about how being an entrepreneur—no matter how much capital or name recognition you have—never gets easier. Still, she wouldn't have it any other way.
