  • 🎤🎤🌊🤓🤓📖 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING TO SOLLILADANGA THUS FAR. A lot has been analysed, A lot has been said, but we are ending this series with the message that the growth and sustenance of both language and literature undeniably lie in the hands of youth. Hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii speak with Harini V, a young bilingual poet, the former lead coordinator of the NLB Young Writers’ Circle (an interest group under the National Library Board), and a writing enthusiast who has been conducting Tamil writing workshops like Penachudar to encourage young and new writing talents. Harini reads her poem "Karuppu Vellai Saayalgalil" (Shades of Black and White) in this episode. Come, Listen, Fall in Love and start writing.

  • 🎤🎤🌊🤓🤓📖Translating literature is not just challenging in its own right, but translated works often open up and reveal new textual meanings that play out differently in varied cultural contexts. How important and relevant is the translation, especially for local Tamil literary works? Who is the mythical English reader we are translating for? What are the challenges translators face? In this episode, our hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii, budding translators themselves, share their thoughts about translations and engage deeper with Kavitha Karuum, who has extensively worked in the media and translation industry, and whose translations have been featured in projects by The National Library Board, National Arts Council, Poetry Festival Singapore and Words Without Borders. Also, look out for a snippet from Singapore’s veteran translator, P. Krishnan, known for his Tamil translation of the Shakespeare play, Macbeth, when he spoke about his experiences in a documentary made by Vaasagar Vattam (Singapore) & Vallinam (Malaysia).

  • “(I write about)…. the everyday murder of women, the countless deaths they die through every humiliations and micro-aggressions, the erasure of their identities.” - Kanagalatha, Award-winning Singapore Tamil Writer

A unique aspect of the local Tamil literature scene is that women form a significant part of the writing community. They have made their mark across different types of literary genres (i.e, poetry, short stories, etc.). However, has this effectively translated into making the woman’s voice heard in their works? Moreover, do female writings always have to be feminist in nature? What unspoken hesitations do female writers have when they write on female-oriented subjects? Hosts Ashwinii and Ayilisha have a conversation with female writer Rama Suresh to gain some insights into the feminine psyche. In addition, the hosts will take to analysing in detail “Naan Kolai Seyyum Pengal”(The Women I Murder), a short story collection by Latha (K. Kanagalatha) that won the Singapore Literature Prize for Tamil Fiction in 2008. Featuring a reading of Harini V's poem "Naan Aanaaga Piranthirunthaal" (If I were a man) too. 🎤🎤🌊💃🏾💃🏾🤓🤓📖

To note: The “Naalai Oru Viduthalai” story that we cited in our discussion was first published in 1998, and included in Latha’s “Naan Kolai Seyyum Pengal” (The Women I Murder), a short story collection that was published in 2007, not in 2008. The 2007 collection received the Singapore Tamil Literature Prize for Tamil Fiction in 2008. We mistakenly referred to the year she won the prize as the year the book was written in our discussion of the story and video credits. Sorry for the misinformation. Thank you to those who alerted us about the error.

  • “Literature is a textually transmitted disease, normally contracted in childhood.”

    -Jane Yolen, American Writer

Yes Yes, we all know it’s been years since you were a child and it has been ages since you even sniffed a picture book😜 But do you still remember the time you learned a new word from the storybooks or the time when you understood more about this world through these books?

  • “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten,” said Rudyard Kipling, a well-known English writer. Vaigarai Pookal, written by the first Tamil recipient of the Southeast Asian Writers Award from Singapore, is one such literary piece of historical fiction that brings us back in time to the lived experiences of a Tamil family in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. In this novel, Ma. Ilangkannan brings us through the time period during which the historic tussle took place between the British and the Japanese and how it changed the lives of Anbarasan and Manimegalai, the novel’s protagonist and his love interest, dramatically.

In addition to exploring the various facets of the novel, we feature in this episode Revathi Manohaaran, a former member of the Nanyang Technological University’s Tamil Literary Society, who directed Vaigarai Pookal into the theatre production Paarvai 2019. She shares with us about her experiences adapting the story to stage and collaborating with AKT Creations.

For an immersive listening experience, read Vaigarai Pookal’s e-book on the National Library Board's Singapore Tamil Digital Heritage Collection (hard copy of the Tamil book and English translation also available in our public libraries) and watch NTU TLS's Paarvai 2019 full theatre production video on YouTube for free too!

  • *English panel discussion!* (Episode presented in both English (main) and Tamil) 🤓🤓🎤🎤🌊📖

It was only last year that Singapore celebrated its bicentennial milestone, which marked the 200th year of Stamford Raffles' founding of the nation. However, Singapore's history is intertwined with that of the larger region and is almost 700 years-long. The nation's literature in the mother tongues, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil, have had similar historical trajectories that go further back in time; even before the advent of colonialism. As such, where do these trajectories diverge and converge?  “Bilingualism” is popularly associated with a proficiency in English paired with that in our mother tongues. But did you know Singapore has had bilingual poets in the past who dabbled in word-play in Malay and Mandarin? Can we still create such bilingual literature, or even multilingual literature in today’s context? Where do Singapore's mother tongue literatures stand within their diasporas, and what’s their future forward? Join us in this special episode featuring an English panel discussion with our two guests, Dr. Tan Chee Lay and Dr. Azhar Ibrahim, organising committee members of Poetry Festival Singapore. Hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii gain insights from them about the Singapore Mandarin and Malay literary scenes and discuss how works in their languages, together with Tamil, can synergise to encapsulate local experiences in literature.

  • Literature and its identity are inseparable, just like how literature and its historical trajectory can't be viewed in isolation. How has Tamil Literature been intertwined with Singapore’s history? Can we locate the "Singapore" identity in our local Tamil literature? In this episode, hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii analyse and discuss what Singapore Tamil literature signifies and comprises, tracing its roots and evolution and also the future that it holds. Listen till the end for a reading of local poet Latha's poem, "September 11", as they also muse about the universal ideas that transcend national boundaries in our writings. 🤓🤓🎤🎤🇸🇬🌊📖

  • “Peoples settled here,

    Brought to this island

    The bounty of these seas,

    Built towers topless as Ilium's.

    They make, they serve,

    They buy, they sell.

    Despite unequal ways,

    Together they mutate,

    Explore the edges of harmony,

    Search for a centre”

    - Edwin Thumboo, Ulysses by the Merlion

In this seminal poem, Edwin Thumboo speaks about the genesis of Singapore, a city born out of an amalgamation of immigrants, the confluence of their cultures, lifestyles, and imaginations. How have Singapore Tamil writers imagined Singapore in their writings? How have these imaginations evolved over the years? Do we need Singapore in our writing to hold the “Singlit” passport? Join Ayilisha and Ashwinii as they interrogate these questions and more in our third episode of Solliladanga.

  • 🤓🤓🎤🎤👻🌊📖  Supernatural and horror themes are commonplace in films, but how about in Singapore Literature? Many would have heard about local books like the "True Singapore Ghost Stories", and characters like Hantu and Pontianak that ‘ghost around’ in them, but do these stories also have a place in our local Tamil literature? Says yes, the writer of the Tamil short story anthology "Aah! Singapoor Amaanushya Kathaigal" ("Aa! Supernatural Stories of Singapore"), Suriya Rethnna, in our very first interview of the Solliladanga series. Are popular themes like horror to be treated seriously in our literature? We find out this and more, as we explore with our guest the 'binary' between popular and 'serious' fiction in this episode. Off to a spooky start!

Listen to 3 short stories from the 'Aah!' collection in our writer's own voice here: https://soundcloud.com/aah-supernatural-stories/sets/aah-by-suriya-rethnna-aah-by . You can borrow and read this book from Singapore's public libraries.
