  • It's time for the Sekai Taikai. Welcome to Barthelona, it's time to see who has a DOG IN THE FIGHT. Is there a snake hiding in the grass or perhaps SNAKES ON A PLANE. #cobrakai

Here are my first thoughts about the first three episodes of season 6.2 This makes up for the somewhat disappointing part 1 that just visited old ground.

  • Steve invited me on his show to talk about the Netflix distributed film, His Three Daughters. Over the course of three days, three estranged sisters reunite in a cramped New York City apartment to watch over their ailing father during his final days in Hospice care.

With my father and mother both in live-in healthcare facilities for the first time, this movie opens the gateway for our thoughts about death, dying, complicated family dynamics, and the art of saying goodbye.

Steve Barnes is guitarist for stoner metal band Introvoid, and also plays guitar for the cover band Rebecca Crow. All of Steve's stuff can be found at Sweetchildoftime.com.

  • I’m joined by “Introvoid” Steve Barnes and “Voidmaster” Nate Dunn to discuss one of my favorite childhood time travel movies, Lionel Jeffries’ The Amazing Mr. Blunden (1972). We discuss my history with this movie, the intricacies of time travel by drinking, and what modes of time travel we think should be created. You may have never seen the film, but it was a holiday mainstay in British homes in the 1970s and 80s.

Description of the movie: It's a grungy night in smoggy London 1918. Mr. Blunden visits the home of the Allen family, consisting of the newly widowed Mrs. Allen, Lucy, Jamie, and little Benjamin. He offers Mrs. Allen the opportunity to take a job as a caretaker of an old derelict country manor called Langley Park. Once she's out of the room, he asks the two eldest children to help him correct a wrong he committed 100 years ago. He leaves the details fuzzy but assures them they will know what to do when the time is right. Our adventures with Mr. Blunden and these two children Lucy and Jamie, will involve ghosts, time travel, magic potions, sentient libraries, attempted murder by poison, attempted insurance fraud, romance, and hidden heritage. Available to watch on Amazon Prime.

  • This podcast is just my tempo. Steve, Lindsey, and special guest, Heather Barnes (Steve’s wife) discuss the behavior and teaching techniques of two cinematic music teachers, Fletcher from Whiplash and Mr. Holland from Mr. Holland’s Opus. As fellow children of musicians, Lindsey and Heather share their experience growing up with a father who wanted to encourage true excellence from their students. Steve also talks about his mentors and how they shaped him. And we all think about what it really takes to encourage greatness as a mentor/teacher.

We also talk about the unique stories these teachers spout to motivate their students. Sometimes, these same stories serve as ugly mirrors to their true, flawed philosophies. Expect the usual search for truth served with bountiful doses of vulnerability and humor. It’s what you can always expect from 1 of my Stories.

The music in this episode is an original composition by Michael Dunn (Lindsey’s dad), and performed live by the grades 4-5 students of the Crooked Creek Crickets on May 14, 1969.

  • Today we are talking about the 2015 punk rock horror feature, Green Room, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and big bad Patrick Stewart. In this movie, a punk band called the Ain't Rights diverts from their planned tour to makeup for their dwindling cashpool. Their matinee show for a crowd of skinheads goes off without a hitch, except for a few boos. All seems kosher until one of them discovers a dead body. Now, trapped inside the green room without means of escape or help, this group of musicians has to use their wits and ability to improvise to outlast the boots and braces in the Pacific Northwest.

  • In this episode, we cover the recently released Arts & Faith Top 25 spiritually significant films about crime and punishment, chosen by a jury of 17 film critics. I was one of the jurors, along with my co-host today, Christian Jessup. We talk about Arts & Faith, how this list came to be, and then list all the selected movies, focusing on some for deeper dives.

You can find the full list on the Arts & Faith website, at ArtsAndFaith.com, as well as a justification of each film from one of the jurors.

About Arts & Faith: The community originally began as a discussion board where members met to discuss the intersection of arts and faith. Today it's a website, but there's also a discord for people who want to join. The community collaborates to release three kinds of lists. One is an annual ecumenical jury that chooses the top 10 films of interest to Christians for the year. This has been going on since at least 2014.Then not every year, but some years, they release a top 100 films, which is ranked list. The last year this was done was 2020. Lastly, the group puts out top 25 lists on a particular theme. This can include movies from any year. This last kind is what we are talking about today.

About Christian Jessup: Christian Jessup is a filmmaker and critic based in Raleigh, North Carolina. With a diverse background in online media, podcasting, television appearances, and jury selections, he brings a unique perspective to film evaluation, exploring the intersection of faith and cinema, recommending films with moral and spiritual depth. Christian has written the music for 16 feature length and short films, as well as directing the award-winning 2020 documentary, The Dancin’ Bulldogs. • While we are waiting for the next series by Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Steve and I want to talk about the early movies made by our favorite perfect match. We recorded a live discussion about this movie.

WHO AM I: NO SYSTEM IS SAFE (Kein System ist Sicher) was released in 2014 and was the second narrative feature directed by Baran Bo Odar. Steve and I talk about the history of development, how the movie is the same and different to Dark, and what the public's reception to the movie was.

This FB live was recorded on May 20, 2024 and contains segments where we interact with a live audience.

Movie description: In Berlin, Benjamin Engel sits in an interrogation room, waiting to meet Hanne Lindberg, Head of Cyber Division of Europol. He claims to have information about a criminal organization of hackers named FR13NDS, a notorious hacking group of four members connected to the Russian cyber mafia, and MRX, an infamous hacker known on Darknet; If she wants to catch them, she needs to listen to his story.

  • As the fandom awaits the next and final season of Cobra Kai, let's take a moment to appreciate the fine season 5 storytelling that broke open the mythos further in the Miyagi-verse.

In season 5, The Big 3 (John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald) and their fine team of writers filled in some gaps in the Miyagi-verse timeline that solidify the cannon of how these dojos operate and function in the world of San Fernando Valley and beyond. These events gel together to create a picture of two truths that are irrefutable in the Miyagi-verse: Cobra Kai wrecks chaos and division; Miyagi-Do brings reconciliation and redemption.

A closer look at this timeline of events elucidates a mythology that leads to inevitable conclusions for our characters. In other words, careful analysis helps us theorize where the story will end, and what will always happen in these respective dojos.

  • Music by Introvoid, vocals by Lindsey Dunn, written by Stomper, mixed by Steve Barnes.

My podcast partner Steve Barnes and I have recapped every episode of the Netflix series, Dark. We wanted to express our love of the show by recording some music from the show. This track is Season 1, episode 8: As You Sow, So You Shall Reap (S1E8).

The song is about the ability of the human heart to keep believing they will be united with the one they love one day. The storyteller describes going to the wishing well to call for their darling. In their heart, they know this person isn't coming back (There's a creeping doubt run up my spine). Yet a part hopes against hope (Gonna find you down in the wishing well). They are stuck hoping for a happy ending that may never come true.

A bleak sentiment, to be sure, but haven't we all been there?

  • Jason Kleeberg of the Force Five podcast joins Steve and I in a trip down nostalgia lane with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’s about five years since this film came out, and with QT announcing his decision to shelve with his “last” film, The Movie Critic, it seemed the perfect time to revisit a film we all consider a new classic.

We talk about the true stories that shaped the movie, including the good, the bad, and the ugly of spaghetti westerns. We also talk about what makes it such a great film and what we think it all means.

About the film: Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn't recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easygoing best friend and longtime stunt double. Rick also happens to live next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate -- the filmmaker and budding actress whose futures will forever be altered by members of the Manson Family.

About Jason Kleeberg: Kason Kleeberg is the host, writer, producer, and editor of the Force Five Podcast. In addition to being a podcaster, he’s a Blacklist screenwriter (The Gumshoe, Powerbomb, Anglerfish), filmmaker (Clarks), and Telly Award winner (2005) from the San Francisco Bay Area. You can find him on all the channels at https://www.forcefivepodcast.com/.

  • In this special episode, we learn what happens when a life coach and a film critic get together to talk about movies.

I'm joined by life coach Anna Gonowon to talk about the movie Perfect Days, directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders. I introduce Anna and her services and what makes her different as a life coach. We then pivot to talking about the main character in Perfect Days, Hirayama, and how Anna would coach him. Hirayama's simple life of routines and hard work suggest a life of contentment, yet underneath the surface, we discover a hidden well of grief and loss that is perhaps beginning to bubble by the end of the film.

This episode really shows off Anna's expertise. Anna is an evidence-based, scientifically grounded coaching strategist with over 6000 one-on-one coaching hours of experience. She can help you with many challenges including:

Healing disconnections with romantic partners, family members, and friends
Improving your relationship with yourself by identifying your key values.
    Conquering limiting beliefs.
Setting goals to get you where you want to be.

About Perfect Days: For those of you who haven't heard of the film, it's the story of Hirayama, a man who cleans public toilets for a living. He starts his day at dawn and follows a carefully scheduled routine of rituals. Yet he does all of this with a sense of contentment and pride. His routines do eventually get interrupted, which helps to reveal more about his character. In this slice of life film, we observe what makes Hirayama tick and where the fault lines lie in his carefully constructed life. Perfect Days was shortlisted for the Best International Feature Oscar for 2023.

  • Steve Barnes and I held a Facebook Live Q & A with 1899 cast member Jonathan Walrus. Jonathan played a third-class passenger who was often seen on screen in scenes with Tove, Anker, and Iben.

Steve and I asked him questions about being on set and his experience working on the set of the Volume. Steve also asked him questions about his live as a musician and frontman of two bands, The Recalls and The Blackbirds. Jonathan was a gracious and engaging guest and was happy to answer any questions thrown at him. The Facebook live was recorded on March 16, 2024 and includes questions asked by a live audience.

About Jonathan Walrus: Jonathan was born in Chile, later moved to Barcelona, and now lives in Germany. He was interested in music from a young age and began a career as a performer and song writer. He performs in two bands, The Recalls and The Blackbyrds. • Music by Introvoid, vocals by Lindsey Dunn, written by Hozier, mixed by James McCollum.

My podcast partner Steve Barnes and I have recapped every episode of the Netflix series, Dark. We wanted to express our love of the show by recording some music from the show. This track is one of my favorite episodes of the show, Life and Death (S3E5).

The song describes being woken from a nightmare. The person wakes to hear an awful noise outside. They investigate and find a wounded fox. The pain of the creature is so great, that they think it's best to end its misery and raise a stone to perform a mercy killing. At that moment they see "new eyes" watching them and end up running away in fear. They choose to save their own life instead of worrying about the fox.

The meaning is open to interpretation, but the imagery in the song is so powerful, clear, and haunting. It's our pleasure to bring you this song.

  • While we are waiting for the next series by Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Steve (Introvoid) and I decided to talk about the first movies by our favorite perfect match. The Silence was released in 2010 and was the first narrative feature by Bo and Jantje. Steve and I talk about the history of development, how the movie is the same and different to Dark, and what the public's reception to the movie was.

This FB live was recorded on February 19, 2024 and contains segments where we interact with a live audience.

Movie description: In July 1986, young Pia is sexually assaulted and murdered on her bike ride. The case is never solved. In 2009, 23 years later, a girl named Sinnika goes missing in the same manner. David Jahn is assigned to the case, but he's still grieving his wife's death. • In the tradition of Charade and the more recent Knight and Day comes Argylle, which seamlessly blends the romantic comedy and spy thriller genres. Luckily, the trailer masks much of the plot, which is not the norm these days. The star-studded cast is having a blast in this caper which proves love and adrenaline go hand in hand. Directed by Matthew Vaughn of the Kingsman franchise with screenplay by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman; Welcome to Derry).
