I’m joined by “Introvoid” Steve Barnes and “Voidmaster” Nate Dunn to discuss one of my favorite childhood time travel movies, Lionel Jeffries’ The Amazing Mr. Blunden (1972). We discuss my history with this movie, the intricacies of time travel by drinking, and what modes of time travel we think should be created. You may have never seen the film, but it was a holiday mainstay in British homes in the 1970s and 80s.
Description of the movie: It's a grungy night in smoggy London 1918. Mr. Blunden visits the home of the Allen family, consisting of the newly widowed Mrs. Allen, Lucy, Jamie, and little Benjamin. He offers Mrs. Allen the opportunity to take a job as a caretaker of an old derelict country manor called Langley Park. Once she's out of the room, he asks the two eldest children to help him correct a wrong he committed 100 years ago. He leaves the details fuzzy but assures them they will know what to do when the time is right. Our adventures with Mr. Blunden and these two children Lucy and Jamie, will involve ghosts, time travel, magic potions, sentient libraries, attempted murder by poison, attempted insurance fraud, romance, and hidden heritage. As fellow children of musicians, Lindsey and Heather share their experience growing up with a father who wanted to encourage true excellence from their students. Steve also talks about his mentors and how they shaped him. And we all think about what it really takes to encourage greatness as a mentor/teacher.
We also talk about the unique stories these teachers spout to motivate their students. Sometimes, these same stories serve as ugly mirrors to their true, flawed philosophies. Expect the usual search for truth served with bountiful doses of vulnerability and humor. It’s what you can always expect from 1 of my Stories.

Apple TV will drop a new TV series, Time Bandits, based on the 1981 fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam. 1ofmystories has never seen the movie and wanted to know about this formative film from Steve’s childhood. Also joining us is Aradiapedia from the Wheel of Time Spoilers podcast. Continuing the story of Riley, Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger have all become a cooperative team of emotions that all help Riley operating without repression. But when Riley enter puberty, five new emotions show up claiming their importance to the mixture. Anxiety, in particular, believes Riley needs to make careful choices or risk being alone. Once again, a battle for control ensues. The emotions will need to come together if Riley is survive her last summer with her two best friends and hold on to a healthy sense of self.

Today we are talking about the 2015 punk rock horror feature, Green Room, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and big bad Patrick Stewart. In this movie, a punk band called the Ain't Rights diverts from their planned tour to makeup for their dwindling cashpool. Their matinee show for a crowd of skinheads goes off without a hitch, except for a few boos. All seems kosher until one of them discovers a dead body. Now, trapped inside the green room without means of escape or help, this group of musicians has to use their wits and ability to improvise to outlast the boots and braces in the Pacific Northwest.

About Arts & Faith: The community originally began as a discussion board where members met to discuss the intersection of arts and faith. Today it's a website, but there's also a discord for people who want to join. The community collaborates to release three kinds of lists. One is an annual ecumenical jury that chooses the top 10 films of interest to Christians for the year. This has been going on since at least 2014.Then not every year, but some years, they release a top 100 films, which is ranked list. The last year this was done was 2020. Lastly, the group puts out top 25 lists on a particular theme. This can include movies from any year. This last kind is what we are talking about today.

As the fandom awaits the next and final season of Cobra Kai, let's take a moment to appreciate the fine season 5 storytelling that broke open the mythos further in the Miyagi-verse.
In season 5, The Big 3 (John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald) and their fine team of writers filled in some gaps in the Miyagi-verse timeline that solidify the cannon of how these dojos operate and function in the world of San Fernando Valley and beyond. These events gel together to create a picture of two truths that are irrefutable in the Miyagi-verse: Cobra Kai wrecks chaos and division; Miyagi-Do brings reconciliation and redemption.
A closer look at this timeline of events elucidates a mythology that leads to inevitable conclusions for our characters. In other words, careful analysis helps us theorize where the story will end, and what will always happen in these respective dojos. -

My podcast partner Steve Barnes and I have recapped every episode of the Netflix series, Dark. We wanted to express our love of the show by recording some music from the show. This track is Season 1, episode 8: As You Sow, So You Shall Reap (S1E8).
The song is about the ability of the human heart to keep believing they will be united with the one they love one day. The storyteller describes going to the wishing well to call for their darling. In their heart, they know this person isn't coming back (There's a creeping doubt run up my spine). Yet a part hopes against hope (Gonna find you down in the wishing well). They are stuck hoping for a happy ending that may never come true.
A bleak sentiment, to be sure, but haven't we all been there? -

It’s about five years since this film came out, and with QT announcing his decision to shelve with his “last” film, The Movie Critic, it seemed the perfect time to revisit a film we all consider a new classic.

He starts his day at dawn and follows a carefully scheduled routine of rituals. Yet he does all of this with a sense of contentment and pride. His routines do eventually get interrupted, which helps to reveal more about his character. In this slice of life film, we observe what makes Hirayama tick and where the fault lines lie in his carefully constructed life. Perfect Days was shortlisted for the Best International Feature Oscar for 2023.

EoM contributor Lindsey Dunn speaks with Julio Quintana, the director of "The Long Game," debuting in its world premiere at SXSW 2023. "The Long Game" was written by Quintana, Jennifer C. Stetson, and Paco Farias, based on the novel "Mustang Miracle" by Humberto G. Garcia. This interview was originally posted on the Elements of Madness YouTube Channel on March 10, 2023. The Long Game is in theaters in April of 2024.
Quintana started his career working under the direction of Terrence Malick. In this interview, they talk about lessons he gleaned from working with Malick and how he then went on to create his own unique style of filmmaking. Steve Barnes and I held a Facebook Live Q & A with 1899 cast member Jonathan Walrus. Jonathan played a third-class passenger who was often seen on screen in scenes with Tove, Anker, and Iben.
Steve and I asked him questions about being on set and his experience working on the set of the Volume. Steve also asked him questions about his live as a musician and frontman of two bands, The Recalls and The Blackbirds. Jonathan was a gracious and engaging guest and was happy to answer any questions thrown at him. The Facebook live was recorded on March 16, 2024 and includes questions asked by a live audience.

The song describes being woken from a nightmare. The person wakes to hear an awful noise outside. They investigate and find a wounded fox. The pain of the creature is so great, that they think it's best to end its misery and raise a stone to perform a mercy killing. At that moment they see "new eyes" watching them and end up running away in fear. They choose to save their own life instead of worrying about the fox.
The meaning is open to interpretation, but the imagery in the song is so powerful, clear, and haunting. It's our pleasure to bring you this song. -

Movie description: In July 1986, young Pia is sexually assaulted and murdered on her bike ride. The case is never solved. In 2009, 23 years later, a girl named Sinnika goes missing in the same manner. David Jahn is assigned to the case, but he's still grieving his wife's death. As the detectives try to solve the possibly linked murders, we follow both the perpetrators and the victims of these crimes during a hot July in Germany.

In the tradition of Charade and the more recent Knight and Day comes Argylle, which seamlessly blends the romantic comedy and spy thriller genres. Luckily, the trailer masks much of the plot, which is not the norm these days. The star-studded cast is having a blast in this caper which proves love and adrenaline go hand in hand. Jesus Christ Superstar is an important movie for Steve. It was formative for him as a young man exploring his own faith in God. Nate is the sweet child who has never seen it until now.
