Discuss the metaphor of a glass castle and what it signifies to Jeannette and her father. Why is it important that, just before leaving for New York, Jeannette tells her father that she doesn't believe he'll ever build it? Though it portrays an incredibly hardscrabble life, The Glass Castle is never sad or depressing. This month's book club I discuss âA Gentleman in Moscowâ by Amor Towles. Hear my thoughts on the writing style, content, and answer the following book club questions:
The Countâs life under house arrest is greatly influenced by his relationship with four women: Nina, Marina, Anna, and Sofia. What is the nature of the Countâs relationship with each of these women? How do those relationships differ from his relationship with the members of the TriumvirateâAndrey and Emile? The majority of A Gentleman in Moscow is told in the third person from the Countâs point of view. There is, however, an overarching narrator with a perspective different from the Countâs. Initially, this narrator appears in footnotes, then in the âAddendums,â then in the historical introductions of â1930,â â1938,â and â1946.â How would you characterize this narrator? How does he differ from the Count in terms of his point of view and tone of voice? What is his role in the narrative? This is a novel with a somewhat fantastical premise set half a century ago in a country very different from our own. Nonetheless, do you think the book is relevant today?
