  • When we set our sights on big goals, it’s not necessarily the goal itself that needs our attention: it’s all of the skills that we’ll inevitably need that we need to focus on. Doing things we’ve never done before will require us to try things we’ve never tried before. It requires us to put ourselves out there which means we could potentially feel embarrassed or rejected.

But working through those feelings is exactly how you attain the skills that you need in order to achieve your goals.

Life is going to provide you challenges all along the way. Some of those challenges will be forced on you. And hopefully some of those challenges will be chosen by you.

A chosen challenge is something that you chose for your own benefit.

A forced challenge is something that you have no choice but to deal with.

Chosen challenges are things like running a 5k, saving money for an international trip, learning how to woodwork or learning another language.

Forced challenges are things such as your building goes up for sale, your car’s engine dies, you lose a loved one or your property experiences a fire or flood.

The beauty of choosing your own challenges is that chosen challenges strengthen you for the forced challenges.

  • Welcome back to Addicted to Busy! It's been a while, and I wanted to share a significant life update and the new directions I'm exploring.

Firstly, I've returned to property management full-time!

This life change has been the perfect opportunity to put my skills to the test. It’s the perfect chance to prove that the things that I share on this podcast and in my course are concepts that I, too, follow.

And, I can be humble enough to say that following these ideas isn’t easy. I’m constantly battling my inner dialogue that tells me that busy-ness and over-doing it are the answer. But I have to remember that the way that I choose to spend my time is a reflection of what my values are.

This year, my focus is on becoming a better speaker. I took an improv comedy class to improve my quick thinking, which was both terrifying and gratifying. Currently, I'm working with a mentor to refine my public speaking skills and considering taking a graphic design class to enhance my presentations.

I encourage you all to invest in your skills in enjoyable ways. For me, activities like salsa dancing provide a mental break from work, preventing burnout and keeping me energized.

Throughout this transition, I'm fighting old habits of overworking and perfectionism. I'm prioritizing sleep, health, and setting attainable goals. I've created non-negotiables that ensure I take care of myself daily, making me a more effective manager and person.

Remember, while we can do anything, we can't do everything. Strategic planning and knowing when to recalibrate are crucial. I have many goals, but I've learned to prioritize and pace myself.

Though I can't commit to weekly episodes right now, I promise to return with new content when possible. Your feedback is always welcome, and if you need a speaker, reach out to me on Instagram at Addicted to Busy or via email at [email protected].

Until next time, keep going. I love you all!

  • I’ve been there.

Busy property managers frequently encounter the challenge of succumbing to overeating or overdrinking at the close of each day. The demanding nature of our roles, coupled with the physical exhaustion from managing properties and addressing various issues, often leaves us with little energy for self-care. The daily grind can lead to a sense of overwhelm, making it difficult for property managers to resist the urge to seek comfort in food or alcohol as a form of reprieve.

  • I love a great analogy.

Imagine a tenant calls you and says, “there's water coming in from my ceiling.”  In many cases, the tenant assumes that the water is coming from the same place in the unit above them. But anyone who has been in property management long enough knows sometimes that leak is not coming directly from above the tenant.

It could be coming from the complete opposite side on the building and two floors up.

The same can be true of our goals.

Sometimes what we think we need to work on, isn’t always what we actually need to work on.

You may have set a resolution to exercise consistently. The problem may not be exercise - it could be learning how to put yourself first or it could be challenging yourself to get up earlier.

Perhaps you set a goal to save more money. The problem may not be your spending - it could be that you need to learn to say no or that you are ready to ask for a raise.

In this week’s episode, we talk about how goal setting will cause us to grow in more than one way - and why that’s a beautiful thing.

  • I remember in a job interview, I told the interviewer that I was a perfectionist. I thought it was an admirable trait.

Do you strive for perfection in everything you do? Do you feel like failure is not an option and anything less than perfect is unacceptable? If so, then chances are you may be a perfectionist.

Perfectionism is often seen as desirable - after all, who wouldn't want to be perfect? However, the reality is that perfectionism can actually be a hindrance rather than a helpful tool.

Yes, having high standards drove me to stand out. But, it also drove me up a wall.

  • Take a moment to think about the dreams, goals and hobbies that you haven't yet actualized.

Ask yourself, "Am I willing to be a beginner?"

No one wants to admit that they have no idea how to do something or that they need help understanding the basics.

Sadly, this prevents many from making the time to learn something new, for fear of slowing down their peers who are farther along in their journey.

It's natural to want to be an expert as quickly as possible (especially if you're in property management!)

  • It takes time and effort to teach your team new skills.

As a leader, it’s important to be patient with your employees as they learn new skills. Teaching is a process and it often requires trial and error (and lots of gritting your teeth!) before your employees catch on.

It can be frustrating to watch someone struggle through something that is second nature to you (ever witnessed a toddler try to tie their shoe when you're in a rush?).

But, allowing this frustration (both within yourself and within your employee) is the key to slowing down to teach... and teach them well.

Creating work-life balance will require you to create an amazing team. While you may not have officially signed on to be a "teacher," it is part of your job description.

Join us in this episode as we unpack how to help your teammates progress through the competence ladder.

  • Have you ever been told that you work too much?

Do you agree but aren't sure how to stop?

If so, it may be worth considering that you might be using your career as an avoidance tactic.

Sometimes, people who work a lot might be trying to avoid things in their personal life. They do not want to think about it or deal with it, so instead, they throw themselves into their work.

Avoidance tactics can manifest in various ways, from long hours of work to procrastination. However, this can escalate into self-sabotage.

Many high-achieving managers find themselves stuck in a cycle of working hard and sacrificing personal time at the expense of progress and development.

When I needed to feel good about myself, I turned to my job to provide me with the validation I lacked.

My dedication paid off as I excelled as a property manager, making it even easier for me to put in more hours when things got tough outside of the office.

â–ȘIf I had an argument with my husband, I'd stay late at the office to avoid confronting him.

â–ȘIf I felt inferior at a networking event, I'd just go get another designation or award to prove my worth.

â–ȘIf I felt self-conscious about my appearance, I could blame all the hours I put in after the office closed.

My job made me feel good when my life didn't.

    Eventually, I couldn't "out work" my self-esteem.

I had to take a good hard look in the mirror and start addressing what I saw.

    đ‘»đ’‰đ’‚đ’đ’Œ 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅.

I started to heal my relationship with myself (and with my loved ones) and I no longer felt I needed to hide from conflict. As I did that, I started finding satisfaction in my personal goals and interests (instead of solely within my career). From there, my self-esteem skyrocketed and I started setting my sights on new goals (the Addicted to Busy podcast being one of them!).

You may feel like the burden of responsibility has become heavier now that you've advanced higher in property management. You're now dealing with more complex decisions and larger responsibilities, such as managing staff, responding to tenant issues, and handling financials.

The demands can become overwhelming when combined with personal commitments and other career obligations. You're no longer simply making sure everything is running smoothly - you’re balancing multiple tasks, deadlines, and expectations on a daily basis.

  • “I know I could teach my team how to do this - but it’s just faster if I do it myself.”

    Have you said this?

Property managers often struggle to find the time to get everything done. It doesn’t help that they often feel that no one can do it as well as they can (and they’re likely right!). With so many demands bearing down on them, they just tend to take care of everything themselves.

For high-achieving property managers, they are amazing at just getting $#!* done.

However, this often results in ultimately feeling overwhelmed and overworked.

So, while they initially believed that “just doing it themselves” would reduce stress - it has the exact opposite effect.

Join us in this week’s episode - we’re talking about why you often times need to intentionally slow down (temporarily) so that your team can speed up indefinitely.

  • Have you ever met someone who is really good at something - and they don't even know it?

Have you ever considered that that person might be you

Oftentimes, we get so good at a particular skill that we’re no longer aware of it. Sadly, this can result in additional work on our plates.

In this week's episode, we're diving into unconscious competence - what it is and how to use it to delegate tasks, to grow into bigger roles and how to mentor your team.

When you understand the different levels of the competence ladder, you allow yourself to move up the ladder of success, quicker. More so, you have tools to help your team do the same.

For those managers who find themselves doing everything (because it's just faster when you do it yourself!), this episode is for you.

  • Most of the property managers that I know are high achievers. They're go-getters. They're ambitious.

They don't just meet the requirements of their job descriptions, they exceed them. They don't hesitate to put in extra hours.

Typically, they have a keen eye for detail - which is why they're so great at day-to-day operations on top of long-term planning for their properties.

In most cases, this drive carries into their personal lives, as well. They run their homes just as well as they run their properties.

But what if ambition isn't necessary?

What if ambition can often pull us off the very path we strive for?

  • Do you ever find yourself stuck in your head, thinking about all the things that could go wrong? If so, you're not alone. Many of us tend to dwell on negativity and what-ifs, which can prevent us from getting things done.

Granted, it's our responsibility as property managers to forecast and prepare for worst-case scenarios.

Unfortunately, we can spin out into analysis paralysis and reduce our productivity.

When it comes to getting things done, we all have our own methods and techniques. But sometimes, even when we know what needs to be done, we can't seem to get started.

We might procrastinate or become perfectionists, second-guessing every decision we make. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. In fact, this is a common issue that property managers face.

Journaling can be a powerful tool for property managers who find themselves stuck in their heads.

By writing down our thoughts and feelings, we can gain clarity on the issues that are holding us back and take action to move forward. Journaling allows us to express ourselves without judgement or criticism, helping us identify patterns of behavior that may be hindering our progress.

It also encourages creativity by allowing us to explore possibilities and solutions that wouldn’t have been available otherwise.

Writing out our worries and anxieties helps us put things into perspective, enabling us to make decisions with more confidence.

Lastly, journaling is an effective way of tracking our progress over time so we can measure how far we've come since starting out.

You’ve heard me preach about the power of journaling and thoughtwork - now it’s time for you to witness it for yourself.
