Hello and welcome to Adulting, and the sixteenth episode of Letās Talk Aboutā¦ a broadening of Adulting... where that was about all of the things we never got taught in school, this is almost like seminars on life; where my audience (that's you!), get to chat anonymously about things they couldn't necessarily discuss over lunch with their friends, or feel like they don't have anyone to talk to about whatever it may be.
To get involved, follow me on Instagram @oenone, where every Tuesday we vote on a topic and every Wednesday we dig deep.
Letās Talk Aboutā¦ insidious misogyny. The submission read āDonāt know how to phrase this properly but Saoirse Ronan on the Graham Norton show and the problem with even the ānice guysā not getting it/how women are always on edgeā. So, I have condensed that to 'insidious misogyny', which I hope works!
This conversation is two-fold, both about what happened on that literal couch, and the parasocial relationships we have with celebrities which mean we can sometimes give tiny viral moments, way too much airtime, and secondly. what this represents more broadly, at a time when gendered and sexual violence against women feels to be at an all-time high.

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ motherhood. The submission read āwomen sharing the realities of having kids on social media is putting me off having themā.
This chat has been a long time coming. The topic of parenthood is something I grapple with, and I wrote a piece about it for my Substack, too, a few months ago, called Maybe, Baby, which I will link in the show notes. I have a lot of thoughts on this, and you did, too!

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ Jealousy. The submission read ābeing jealous of others and how to overcome itā
I actually really loved this topic, because we all feel jealous from time to time but itās such a shameful and somewhat embarrassing feeling that maybe we donāt always talk about it, so I felt it was nice to hold space to share these emotions and realise just how common they are.

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ Blake Lively. The submission read: Blake Lively/ women being piled on / cancelled on the internet.
Whilst this conversation was initially about the two camps of support for either Justin Baldoni or Blake Lively, after the press fallout from the film adaptation of Colleen Hooverās mega sell out It Ends With Us, it was also about the way famous women are built up only to be torn down. Anne Hathaway, J Lo, Cara Delevingne, Jennifer Lawrence just to name a few, have over the past decade, fallen in and out of favour for sometimes indefinable reasons.
I had so many messages on this, perhaps this shows we are more interrogative of what content we are being fed, and how easy it is to be manipulated by media, as opposed to instances in the past when everyone turned against Keira Knightley or Julia Roberts and everyone kinda just accepted that they loved to hate with little introspection as to why.

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ Summer. The submission read: The feeling of a well-lived summer being underwhelming each year, and feeling disappointed.
I was actually quite surprised that this one beat babies, they were tying for a long while, but I personally really understood the sentiment of this submission.
I read this to mean, that we put so much store in summer, there is so much lore around the season, itās the fun sexy season where nothing is off limits and the nights are long and the possibilities are endless, but perhaps as we get older, the nostalgia for that freedom we associate with summer is stronger than the truth of it, so weāre left wanting and bereft.
I really enjoyed recording this episode... I hope you enjoy it, too! As always, please do rate, review and subscribe!

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ Dating. The submission read: Whatās going on in the collective psyche of single ppl, why dating is so hard atm?
Wow, firstly I have never had SO many dms on any subject. Where to startā¦ well I guess the first thing to say is 99.9% of the messages were from women, and women are my main demographic, but also all of the submissions were about heterosexual relationshipsā¦ more than happy to talk about queer love in another episode, it just didnāt come up this time.
I had so much to say on this topic, I hope you enjoy :) as always, please do rate, review and subscribe!

Letās Talk Aboutā¦ far right attacks. The submission read: Far Right Attacks, where do we go from here?
I am recording this on Thursday afternoon the day after lots of racist, Islamophobic, fascist riots were planned, but in a bittersweet turn of events we saw anti-fascist and anti-racist counter protestors turn up in their thousands and basically block the areas that were said to be targeted. It made me feel very proud of our city and Bristol and Brighton, Newcastle, Nottingham and all of the other places that showed solidarity, however perhaps we, as that silent majority, need to be less silent, show up more, and do more in general to make sure everyone in the UK feels safe and welcome.
Again, I wanted to put a trigger warning here to say that there will be messages about racism and the ongoing rise in fascism and if that is too upsetting or distressing then please do switch off now.
As we know three little girls Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were murdered at a Taylor Swift themed party, and fuelled by disinformation about the murderer, this horrific tragedy was seized upon by the racists and fascists to bring violence and rioting to Southport, targeting mosques and minority groups, this has now spiralled into fear for so many with the rise of far right and islamophic propaganda spreading like wildfire especially on social media.
For this conversation we focussed on the feeling and general environment in the wake of these events as well as talking about where it has come from and what we can do. This is an extremely sensitive subject but I do believe itās important we talk about it.

Letās Talk Aboutā¦parent mortality. The submission read: parents mortalityā¦ my dad is terminally unwell and I am only 28.
Before we begin I just wanted to give you a trigger/content warning. I received so many messages about parental loss, grief, being a carer, dealing with terminal illness, and so if any of those subjects are too close to home or may be too upsetting this episode might not be for you.
Although despite the very difficult subject matter, so many of you expressed how much of a relief it is to actually talk about grief and loss in a culture that has a strange and fractured relationship with death. So many of us donāt really know what to say or how to talk about it, which is why I was so grateful that so many of you were so generous with your own experiences.
Please do let me know any feedback and always, I'd love for you to rate, review & subscribe, it helps people to find the podcast,

Hey Podulters! Welcome to Adulting 2.0: The Timelines.
This week Iām talking to Shelley Syme. Shelleyās timeline completely shifted when at the age of 29 she found a lump under her armpit and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes as well, which led her to make the brave decision to have a mastectomy. We connected online after Shelley wrote a gorgeous poem about her feelings towards her breasts on a post I did for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
We talk about finding that life changing lump, reframing your mentality around your body, dating, not wanting children and her love of snooker.
I hope you enjoy, and as always please do rate, review and subscribe.
