Roger Smith is a South Australian harmonica player who has been playing with his Blues/Rock band The Bluescasters for the past 16 years. Roger began his musical journey playing the djembe in a world music band called 'Fuego' with his good friend Glen Reynolds. Roger has always loved the blues and was really interested in learning how to play the harmonica, so he eventually decided to go and have some lessons at WEA with John Hastwell. A few years later he heard about an eclectic jam session that was happening at Bookends Bookshop on Unley Road which he began to attend on a regular basis, and this is where he first met The Bluescasters vocalist/guitarist Tony Pettas. Roger grew tired of having to travel to Unley and the other jams that he was attending every week so he decided to start his own jam which he did at the Blackwood RSL. Roger ran this weekly jam for 6 years and it was during this period that he began to regularly jam with the other musicians who he would end up forming the blues/rock band 'The Bluescasters' with. 'The Bluescasters' had the first gig at The Old Clarendon Winery, and due to their popularity, regularly played there on a Sunday afternoon until the winery closed. Roger's love of the blues also led to him starting the Port Noarlunga Blues Festival with a friend in 2017, and he is also a former Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) committee member.
If you are interested in having harmonica lessons with Roger you can contact him via phone on 0411 702 845 or email [email protected]
Music: intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant.
Outro: The Bluescasters performing the Jimi Hendrix version of "Come On" (often called "Let the Good Times Roll") which was written by New Orleans rhythm and blues artist Earl King. The song's lyrics are based on "Let the Good Times Roll", the 1946 jump blues hit by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five.

S3 E8 Snooks La Vie (Paul Wimbles) is a South Australian born blues/soul/country vocalist and harmonica player who first began to play the harmonica after finding a brand new Hohner Marine band harmonica that was underneath a former partners bed. He began to teach himself how to play whilst sitting outside in his Monaro. He first started out playing on the local scene with a punk band called The Enemy, and switched to playing the blues after his work mate Rubes suggested that he give this genre a try. The pair started out playing together at work functions and it wasn't too long before they put together their first band The Deliverymen, who were later to become The Hiptones (after a few lineup changes.) Snooks had always been a fan of Cold Chisel, and after meeting their harmonica player David Blight at a David Blight and The Flyers gig, Snooks had a few lessons with him before deciding to concentrate on the more traditional blues sound that comes from playing by using the tongue blocking technique. Snooks La Vie acquired his moniker from his friend and music/work colleague Papa Rubes which started out as just a bit of fun and stuck amongst his peers for being known as an avid fan of New Orleans musician ‘Snooks Eaglin’. As former front man of The Hiptones, Snooks has enjoyed the success of awards such as a South Australian Music Award for best blues band/act in 1997, signed to a major label SONYBMG in 2006 and an APRA nomination for best ‘blues/roots’ work in 2008. Snooks also took out South Australian Blues Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years (2008, 2009, and 2010.) The Hiptones recorded their second album "Right Now" at Joe Camilleri's studio Woodstock studios with James Black producing the album. Snooks current bands are Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and his new band Snooks La Vie's Blues All Star Revue. He also performs in duos with Nikko (Nick Kipridis) and Snooks, Courtney Robb and Snooks, and J J Fields (Sav Palaktsoglou) and Snooks La Vie.

Bonus Episode; BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane released her debut blues/gospel single “The Underground Railroad” on the 22nd of September to raise Narcolepsy awareness on World Narcolepsy Day. In this episode, you will hear Di Spillane being interviewed by Zofia Dendunnen from PBAFM and then by Julie Reynolds whose community radio network program 'Saturday Breakfast with Julie Reynolds', is aired on over 30 community radio stations across Australia. “The Underground Railroad” is available to purchase on bandcamp, Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
To purchase on Apple Music:: https://music.apple.com/au/album/the-underground-railroad-single/1642022382
To purchase on bandcamp https://dispillane.bandcamp.com/track/the-underground-railroad
Di was inspired to write “The Underground Railroad” after discovering that one of the railroad’s most famous conductors Harriet Tubman remarkably managed to escape from slavery on her own, only to then spend more than 10 years returning to Maryland to lead her family and friends safely to freedom via a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves, called the Underground Railroad. She did this despite suffering from the rare sleep disorder “secondary narcolepsy” or “posttraumatic hypersomnia”, which she developed after having received a severe blow to her head.
Di has lived with type 1 narcolepsy with cataplexy since childhood, and despite having had symptoms for most of her life, she didn't receive a diagnosis until she was 49. Di decided to release this song on the 22nd of September, 2022 to coincide with World Narcolepsy Day to help raise awareness of this rare debilitating sleep disorder.
Di Spillane vocals, Gail Page - bv's and harmonies, Rick Melick - piano, Edward Pollard - drums, Denis Surmon - bass guitar. Recorded by Brett Sody at Sody - Pop Recording Studios and Services, Norwood, South Australia.

South Australian-born musician DAVID BLIGHT is without a doubt one of Australia’s premier harmonica players. There aren’t too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight. Every time you hear that favorite of Australia’s rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David’s distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes’ vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years. During this interview, David shares his musical journey from listening to the radio and hearing "Bring it on Home" from a freshly released Led Zeppelin 2 when the light was well and truly switched on, to playing whenever he could with local bands, to how working at John Martins led David Blight to become Cold Chisel’s harmonica player. David formed his own band The Flyers in 1982 and has continued his connection, recording with Cold Chisel and band members Don Walker and Ian Moss. Mick Kidd together with Dave Blight won the Adelaide Roots & Blues Associations inaugural "Memphis Blues Challenge" (solo/duo) in 2015 and were sent to represent Australia in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA – This was following up on their success at the 2014 South Australia Blues Awards winning the "Outstanding Solo/Duo." On 17th November 2015, a small group from the Adelaide Music Collective/ SA Music Hall Of Fame attended Cold Chisel's soundcheck to surprise Dave Blight with an induction. He had previously declined an induction as he felt he was not worthy. After many more nominations and public outpouring, it was decided that he would be inducted in collaboration with Cold Chisel.
Music: intro "BAND IT ABOUT" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Cut you loose", written by Mick Kidd, is track 5 off of Mick Kidd and David Blight's sophomore album “Menu of Sin”, which was released on the 17th of July, 2017.

Will Kallinderis aka Harpin’ Will K joins Di Spillane this week to discuss his musical journey, a journey that has followed him from Ottawa, Edmonton Alberta, Vancouver, and since 2005 South Australia. Will Kallinderis aka 'Harpin’ Will K' is a singer-songwriter who performs a lively mix of original roots, funk, and blues. Emerging in 2016 with his debut solo album Last Of The Singing Peace Chiefs, a collection of acoustic guitar-driven songs, full-throttled harmonica soloing, and backup harmony vocals. More recently he has been revisiting early influences to create a repertoire of raw ‘n’ gritty stripped-back blues. Will’s been performing on the local Adelaide scene as a soloist and in various projects since 2007.
At 16, Will was inspired to pick up the harmonica after hearing the music of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, and Bob Dylan. The following year he took up the guitar and was influenced by Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf), John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters to name a few. Will’s soulful roots sound is a result of many years honing his skills as a regular busker on the streets of Edmonton, Alberta followed by performances in the local blues and folk scene. Over the years his musical influences expanded to include the sounds of R&B, folk, rock as well as Latin, funk, and world music.
Will moved to Adelaide in 2005 and in 2007 he formed a power trio called Star Step Evolution with Mike Palmer on bass and Benjamin Gallasch on drums. Featuring a funky, bluesy, reggae style with plenty of harmonica soloing. The members parted ways in late 2009. Will continued gigging around town as a solo performer honing and evolving his singer-songwriter roots originals as well as building a repertoire of blues.
In 2017 Will joined local slide guitarist Cal Williams Jr for several festival shows. He stepped in at late notice when Adelaide’s blues icon Chris Finnen had to pull out of the Fringe show ‘A History Of Early Blues’. The success of the show led to Will joining Cal Williams Jr and Kory Horwood on double bass for the next two seasons. Will also joined Cal and Kory in Cal’s project The Ukulele Blues Explosion featuring stripped-back possibilities with ukulele, bass, and harmonica. In 2018 Will formed The Young Sequoias with Matt Colyer on drums featuring upbeat guitar and amplified harmonica together with Matt’s catchy rhythms that introduced new interpretations of Will’s debut album along with a vast range of new songs drawing on roots, rock, jazz, soul, funk and electric delta blues. One of the highlights for the duo was the successful sold-out 2020 Fringe show, ‘Electric Delta – Blues Hits Big Town’ celebrating the Blues from raw and gritty Mississippi to the refined urban sounds of Chicago, featuring popular classics by such artists as Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more.
The Young Sequoias have taken a break and may remain dormant indefinitely. In the meantime, Will is focusing on recording his next solo album and considering teaching harmonica.

Karen Pater was born in Sydney, spent her teenage/early-mid adult life in Perth, and in recent years moved to South Australia settling in the Fleurieu Peninsular. Despite taking up playing the harmonica initially whilst living in Perth, initially inspired to play this instrument after seeing Matt Taylor play, and Matt encouraging her to continue playing, Karen eventually became frustrated by the lack of ways to learn how to play. The pre-internet days meant relying on learning to play by ear whilst listening to records, and eventually, life got busy with work and other commitments, so apart from jamming with friends or attending an open mic, Karen didn't have much of an opportunity to advance her natural talent. All of this changed in recent years when she moved to South Australia, Karen was asked by her friend Heather Frahn if she would like to play with her band Heather Frahn & The Moonlight Tide at the Deep South - Roots, Blues & Folk Festival in 2013, giving Karen the opportunity to fulfill her dream of playing at The Gov on the main stage. Since marrying and retiring from nursing, Karen has had the time and the opportunity to rediscover her love of the harmonica. The first band that she joined in SA was called 'Billy Goat Boogie, and when a couple of the band members decided to move on and form their own band The River Rats, they asked Karen if she would be interested in joining them.
The River Rats started in 2019 with the aim of putting together a blues repertoire to then gig at local bars and festivals. The 'Rats, as they've become known, have built a very strong following on the Fleurieu Peninsular and surrounding areas with their brand of cool blues classics and original songs. The band includes Karen Pater (harmonica and percussion), Garry Searle (lead vocals, drums, and guitars), originally Michael Porter on guitar, now replaced by Caitlyn Rault, and Paul Kraack (vocals, bass, and guitars). Through the challenges of COVID-19, Paul and Garry built a song-writing collaboration and began recording a number of original songs - and the band created the EP titled 'Hold On'. Two singles 'Hot And Cold', and 'Wildflower' were released around Christmas 2021 on all streaming services. In January ’22, their blues song ‘Wildflower’ achieved national recognition when it hit number 3 on the Australian National Radio Airplay Project regional charts. The 'Rats continue to gig around the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and perform their originals and R&B classics.

South Australian harmonica/percussionist Bobby Blues joins me this week to share his musical journey for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series.
Bobby whose given name is Greg Carmody, received his first harmonica when he was 8 years old, he played with it for a while and then put it away. It wasn't until he was 21 that he rediscovered that harmonica in a cupboard in his room, and this time he decided to teach himself how to play it. He joined his first band 'The Toe Jammers' in 1982, who changed their name to 'The Global Artichokes' in 1984. In 1986 he joined 'The String Breakers and continued to play with them until 1992 when he met Russell Stewart who asked him to join his band the 'Blu Stu Band', which was not only the start of a long-term association, but it was also the birth of Bobby Blues! The Blu Stu Band became The Harmonics - Funky Swinging Rhythm and Blues Band in 2008, and he has remained with this band ever since. Bobby also has a recording band and has recently released a couple of original songs "Rooster Blues" and "Teddy's Juke Joint."
Career highlights include; In 2013 Bobby was invited to play with Dan Aykroyd who was in Sydney to promote his Crystal Head vodka at the Rock Lily Bar. In 2015 whilst vising the USA he played in New Orleans with Luther Kent (Blood Sweat & Tears) at Hotel Monteleone, Willie Lockett & the Blues Crewe at the Vasso Blues Club, Mark Muleman Massey at the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale Mississippi, and with various musicians at Teddy's Juke Joint in Baton Rouge.
Music; "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Rooster Blues" written by Bobby Blues, Bobby Blues – Vocals and Harmonica, Tyler Venter - Slide Guitar, Milush Piochaud - Bass Guitar, Jack Strempel - Keyboard, and Angus Mason - Drums.

Multi-instrumentalist Danny Filmer joins me to discuss his musical journey for this week's episode of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. Danny, born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), and raised in Blackwood, South Australia, was the youngest of three children. His older sister played the piano and whenever she wasn't at home, Danny would use that opportunity to hop on and play. Unfortunately, in the 70s when his sister decided to move out, she took her piano with her, but luckily for Danny, a family friend Steve Goss who was also a musician, gave him his first harmonica, and his love of this instrument and the blues grew from there. Danny, who also plays the bass guitar, joined his first band 'The Severed Tendons', who later changed their name to 'Endo Plasmic Reticulum' as their bass player, this was the beginning of his gigging career with various Adelaide bands. The 'Spirit Of Alondray' was the first band that Danny had the opportunity to play the harmonica with, but only on a few of their songs.
In 2016 Danny began making and playing his cigar box guitars, initially using a stomp box for the beat. He soon realized that drumming was best left to the experts, so he asked his wife Sue to come out of performance retirement to provide the beat on the Cajon drum for him, they have been performing together as the duo SUEDAN ever since. Danny has been able to write songs complimentary to his choice of instruments, the cigar box guitar, and harmonica, whereas, in the past, the bands that he had played with didn’t allow him to incorporate his favorite instrument the harmonica as much as he would have liked. The duo has a love of Middle Eastern music, which can be heard in some of their original blues compositions. The duo has traveled a lot since 2016, performing at various festivals and busking along the way. In 2021 Danny decided to leave his day job at the winery to enable them to turn Suedan into a full-time career, a risky move during a pandemic, but one that enabled them to take advantage of a time when mandatory density restrictions in venues, had resulted in a lot more work for solos and duos. When the duo isn’t performing at events, they are running open mic’s and busking.
SUEDAN is competing in the Memphis Blues Challenge (MBC) Final on the 27th of August, for the opportunity to represent the Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) at the Blues Foundation's "International Blues Challenge", which will be held in Memphis Tennessee in 2023.

S3 E1 Mark Snoad is a South Australian-born Hohner Harmonica player who despite having played from a young age, didn't actually join his first official band (AP D'Antonio and the Captain Kidd Band) until 2019. Mark began carrying his harmonica in his pocket and taking any opportunity to jump up and play at a party, at a jam, or with a band during the late 70s, managing to play often at the Ramsgate Hotel with Dr. Zen and the Interns. Mark has played with many musicians and bands here in Adelaide including; The Rock Doctor's, Tongue in Cheek, The Zensationals, Satisfaction - The Stones Show, Gwyn Ashton, Chris Finnen, and Gail Page. Since joining The Captain Kidd Band, Mark has also joined the YouBlues Band and Don't Tell Joe.
Mark began to take playing the harmonica more seriously around 10 years ago after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and we discuss how playing the harmonica is good for physical and mental health during this interview. Music therapy provides an effective treatment approach to improve motor function, balance, freezing of gait, gait speed, and mental health in patients with Parkinson’s disease. This accessible instrument is an excellent tool for strengthening the diaphragm, increasing lung capacity and breath control, and improving respiratory functioning related to swallowing. All of these benefits directly relate to symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Mark plays a HOHNER Special 20 Harmonica, uses a Fender Blues Junior Amp, and an Astatic Harmonica Microphone that was once owned by Australian multi-instrumentalist Broderick Smith!
Music: intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro: "I'll Be Gone" written by Spectrum guitarist and vocalist Mike Rudd. Mark is playing the harmonica in this audio which was recorded during this year's Adelaide Fringe Festival 'A Rock Legends Show', held at Norwood Live, February 2022.

This is the Final Episode for Season 2 of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. This week my guest drummers playing 20 Questions in 2 Minutes are from episodes 79 to 83, they include Madeleine Cossey, Andreanna Massacci, Alex Deegan, John Zak, and Travis Demsey.
Make sure that you listen to the end as I will be announcing the details for Season 3 of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series!
The BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series interviews always end with the guests playing 20 Questions in 2 Minutes. There are 2 reasons behind this, the first being that all of the guest's journey's have not finished so this is a fun way to end the interview, the other is that it can be quite a cathartic experience talking about your past experiences, often discussing things that you hadn't given any thought to for many years. So by playing a game like 20 questions it helps to reset them, along the lines of a debriefing that you would have after an incident. I always include questions about their first concert, the first album that they purchased, etc, as well as include a few questions that are relevant to the individual guest and it is often at this stage that the guest realizes that I know a bit more about them than they had thought! These questions are about things that I read whilst researching the guest.
