She shares her own traumatic experience at the hospital where she practices medicine during her pregnancy, why she believed the overturning of Roe V. Wade is steeped in systemic racism. Her thoughts on home births vs hospital births and advice for Black women to advocate for themselves during their pregnancies.
About our guest:
Toluwalase "Lase" Ajayi is a palliative care physician and pediatrician. She is dedicated to expanding the benefits of palliative medicine across all ages, as well as improving communication with seriously ill patients. She has a strong interest in studying methods of improving communication between seriously ill patients and hospital teams, as well as investigating how palliative medicine can improve the quality of lives of patients with previously devastating pediatric disease who are now living well into adulthood. This group of patients includes, but is not limited to, those with congenital heart defects, cystic fibrosis, and hemoglobinopathies as well as survivors of pediatric cancers.
She currently serves as the medical director of palliative medicine at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego and is well published in her work with patients with serious illnesses. She completed medical school and residency at the University of Kansas and moved to San Diego for a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Uchenna “Uche” Udobi shared ways parents can support children who are late talkers, advises on when to get kids an evaluation, what most people don't know about stuttering, potty training, and more.
Uchenna Udobi, is a certified Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) from Houston, TX and the founder of LittoLingo. A company designed to help parents grow their child's communication ability, decrease parental stress, while improving academic and social success. This is done by teaching parents how to create meaningful exchanges at home by improving their infants and toddlers language milestones timely via an online video series. She has close to 15 years of experience getting kids talking. For the last 2 years, she has been a member of the Language in Infants through Preschoolers Topic Committee, where she reviews and rates the latest evidence on language growth of children birth to 5. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and listening to podcasts and audiobooks.

JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM, is a veterinarian and freelance medical writer. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University, then earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
JoAnna is the founder and owner of JPen Communications, a medical communications company. Through her writing, she strives to close the gap between what the veterinarian says and what the pet parent understands. Her mission is to equip pet parents with the information they need to make good health decisions for their pets.
JoAnna and her husband are the proud parents of their infant son, Karl. They endured several years of infertility, experiencing two miscarriages and undergoing several rounds of IVF.
JoAnna’s infertility journey profoundly affected her. She is passionate about sharing her journey and doing her part to break the shame, silence, and stigma surrounding infertility, especially among Black women.

They share their biggest concerns when finding a health care provider, "less than" hospital experiences, bias in the healthcare system, and birth control --specifially IUD struggles.
Black women face risks to their health from discrimination—both from health professionals who don’t take their concerns seriously and from biological wear and tear caused by chronic stress. An October 2018 Oprah.com article on the topic cites research from two researchers and an alumna from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

She shared tips for new moms who are currently caring for babies in the NICU. Bianca opened up about how she and her family dealt with the grief of baby loss and her advice for other parents also dealing with baby loss. She shared about guiding her older daughter through grief and what worked for her. Advocating for her health helped her have a safe delivery and discover her kidney disease. She also shares what life is like living with a chronic and awaiting a transplant, how others can help by becoming a donor, and how to become a kidney donor.
