About Mike
Mike is a 40+ year veteran of the packaging industry with experience in the corrugated, folding carton and flexible packaging markets. After graduating from Villanova University, Mike went to work for Bobst North America in a sales support role. Over the next 32 years he rose through various leadership positions in the Bobst organization in various packaging equipment markets. This growth culminated in an 18-year role as Vice President of Sales and Service.
Goss International recruited Mike to be its North American Managing Director and to transition its web offset printing press business from the publication and newspaper markets to the packaging markets. This challenge was successfully met, resulting in the sale of Goss to a private equity company.
After Goss, Mike continued to pursue service to the paper-based packaging industry by joining AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, as Vice President in October 2016. He was elevated to the President’s role at AICC on July 1, 2019.
Prior to joining AICC, Mike had been a 20+ year Associate Member of the Association. Mike has served on the Board of Directors of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) including a term as Chair. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA). Both Board experiences showed him the satisfaction that can be achieved in Association management.
Mike and his wife Susan are the parents of two grown daughters. They live in Dumfries, Virginia.

About Richard
Richard Brown has been with The BoxMaker since 2003. Prior to his current role, he served as the Corrugated Sales Manager, Vice President, and General Manager. Richard’s career in packaging began with a summer warehouse job as a teen. He quickly worked his way up to delivery driver, a series of office roles, and then outside sales where he developed and sold custom packages for 13 years.
His first leadership role was in product management at Tenneco. In 1999 he accepted a promotion to lead a branch office of Landsberg Ororoa in the Seattle area. Richard enjoys actively participating in AICC and Vistage.
As a packaging professional, Richard enjoys seeing how things are made, and he maintains a keen interest in client projects as they are produced. He believes being involved in all parts of the process is an excellent way to learn from an array of people and companies.
Richard focuses on ensuring The BoxMaker has the right talent, equipment, and culture in place to serve clients effectively and develop true partnerships. He values treating everyone with respect, living in the moment, and making a positive impact. Richard says, “The impact I have on my coworkers’ lives will be my scorecard as a leader.”
Richard enjoys being outdoors to appreciate the beauty and fresh air of the Pacific Northwest while hiking and fly fishing. He looks forward to spending time in Northwest Arkansas where we recently expanded. He loves spending time with his grandchildren and supporting his local community.
Seattle Business Magazine recognized Richard as Executive of the Year 2020 in its Washington Manufacturing Awards.

About Jim and Mike
Jim Haglund always had a job. He eventually landed at a distributor, where he got to know independent box makers. One of their suppliers was a sheet plant named Central Container Corp. After an encounter with one of the original owners, Jim proposed buying his half of the company. The company had a different succession plan, but the owner sold his 50% to Jim anyway because he knew Jim would succeed.
Mike Haglund started at Central mowing the lawn and opening mail when he was ten years old. He continued to work summers there throughout college. After graduating college, Mike built a successful career, which included running a scrap yard and purchasing two packaging supply companies. Eventually, his father wanted to acquire his companies and fold them and him into Central, and Mike was ready to return to the family business.

In this episode we talk with Bob Cohen, President, Acme Corrugated Box.
Bob Cohen’s family went from selling rags to selling used boxes to creating an innovative manufacturing company. With humility, Cohen shares his company’s story of growth and how he and his wife chose to give back to the community that supported them.
Spurred on by the tight market in the 1970s, Cohen went from being a distributor to a converter, starting with a used letterpress. Following his instincts, Cohen continued to grow the company and eventually brought his three sons into the family company.
About Bob
My name is Burton (Bob) R. Cohen, and I have been involved with my family business since 1969 after a short stint in the Army Reserves. I graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia and Penn State University, majoring in History (Bachelor of Arts). When I joined the company, we had five employees. We distributed corrugated packaging in the local market, and we generated annual revenues of about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. In 1973, we purchased the first converting equipment, allowing us to produce corrugated packaging ourselves. Our start was primitive, but somehow, we survived in a market with better-equipped and more seasoned competitors. In 1980, the company moved from Philadelphia to the Bensalem area (a Philadelphia suburb). There, we occupied a 60,000 square feet facility, which allowed us to expand our manufacturing capability and add a larger workforce. We prospered there until the early 2000s and in 2001, we were given the opportunity to further integrate our manufacturing operation with the addition of corrugating capacity (2 Narrow Width Agnati Corrugators). This equipment acquisition necessitated our move to our present location in Hatboro. The new building has 234,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Looking around, we initially felt, “How will we ever fill this space!” We filled it a lot quicker than expected.
We had seen steady growth since the major recession of 2009, essentially increasing the sales volume by 75% by 2016. We continued to add converting lines as our business grew. Between 2016 and 2019, we had increased sales by 57%. We also added four additional converting lines in that same timeframe prior to the Pandemic. As our volume increased, it became apparent that we needed far more space and more converting lines. With a focus on our clients and their growing demands, we investigated how an expansion could be executed while the economy was in the throes of the Pandemic. Believing there is no going backward in business, we took the plunge. The plans drawn up would make us the most progressive and best-equipped independent converter in the Northeast region. So, in November of 2020, we began construction. We added 80,000 square feet (with heights of 40’”& 60’ to accommodate roll stock and the WIP system) and numerous new machinery including a 110” Fosber 1500 ft/min three stage corrugator, a Warak high rack WIP system developed in Europe, A Warak roll delivery system, full conveyorization of the entire facility (WSA & Ducker), a new waste and starch system, a dust collection system, the movement of entire departments within the facility and the addition of two new converting lines. The project was complete in April of 2023. At present, we employ 250 staff members, and presently our revenues are almost 2 times as great as our 2016 revenue had been.

Both having served as AICC Emerging Leader (EL) Delegates, the volunteer leaders of the Program, Josh and Cassi can offer a different perspective on leadership, the industry, and how to motivate younger employees.
They share their EL experiences as well as their industry origin stories. Sobel, an EL graduate, discusses how the EL Program has grown, what it is like to leave a family company, and trying to find his own path. Malone, a current EL, found her way into the industry by taking a leap after a chance encounter.
About Cassi
Cassi Malone, Director of Customer Experience, Corrugated Supplies Company
Cassi Malone is the Director of Customer Experience for Corrugated Supplies Company (CSC). Initially starting as a Customer Service Representative within the company 10 years ago, she has worked hard to learn as much about CSC, their customers, and the industry as possible.
In her current role, Cassi oversees the service and planning operations for CSC’s 9 sheet feeder operations across the country. She has a passion for learning and teaching, and is always looking to absorb as much knowledge as she can from those around her. Her passion for learning led her to AICC’s Emerging Leaders group 7 years ago, where she became a member and started to immerse herself in the paper and packaging industry with other young professionals. As she came to know and love the program, she eventually took on the role as an Emerging Leaders Delegate from 2019-2022 on the AICC Board of Directors so she could help shape the program for future ELs.
Cassi graduated with an MBA from Robert Morris University in 2011, and she also continued to serve as an adjunct faculty member for over 6 years at her alma mater. Cassi is a firm believer in mentorship, communication, and building relationships. Her goal is to help others find their way, just like so many have and continue to support her along the way. Outside of work, Cassi can be found in her most favorite role of all – Mom, as her and her husband try to keep up with their two sassy, energetic little girls!
About Josh
Josh Sobel, Account Manager, Jamestown Container Companies
After graduating from The Ohio State University in 2003 with a degree in Political Science Josh decided to return home to join his grandfather’s box business, Sobel Corrugated Containers, as a customer service representative. Throughout his 10 years with the company he worked in multiple roles for the business including plant scheduling, sales, and VP of sales. In 2012 he joined Jamestown Container’s Macedonia division as an account manager, and has worked in that role since.
He has been on the AICC board of directors two separate times, first as an Emerging Leaders delegate and currently as the Great Lakes Regional Director.

What began as an inventory management role in 1989 turned into an incredible career path in the corrugated industry with Haire Group. Keith worked his way up through all levels of the organization, and has an in-depth understanding of the organization and industry as a whole. Keith provides Haire Group with leadership, management, and vision to help grow the company. Over the years, he has served on the AICC Associate Board as a member and Chairman.
About Mike Mulroe | President
As President at Haire Group, Mike and his management team run the day-to-day operations of the business with overall responsibility for the company’s operating performance. Though a relative newcomer to the industry, he joined Haire in early 2021 with a vast amount of operations, quality improvement and leadership experience, most recently as Vice President of Operations for one of the nation’s top academic medical centers.
In addition to leading day-to-day operations, Mike oversees the company’s ongoing strategic growth and is the leader in communicating and implementing the mission, vision and overall direction for the company.

In this episode we talk with Kevin Ausburn, Chairman & CEO, and Matt Ausburn, CFO, of SMC Packaging Group.
While SMC faced a tough start, like all box plants, Kevin Ausburn’s father and his business partner, Chuck Bachus, worked through it. After becoming a CPA, Kevin worked in Kansas City for several years before feeling the pull of a family business. His son Matt followed a similar path, earning a CPA and gaining experience outside of the SMC before the prospect of new projects also pulled him in.

Kevin started as a janitor in the Summers at Southern Missouri Container, founded by his father and Chuck Bachus, as he was working through school. After earning his MBA in Accounting, he worked as a public accountant for several years before joining the family business in 1982 as the comptroller. Since then, through organic growth and acquisition he has helped SMC become a sizeable multi-plant company while maintaining a family-focused company culture.
Kevin is actively involved with his community and as an AICC member.
About Matt Aubsurn
CFO
Summers in high school and college were spent in the pre-press department for Matt. WAfter graduating college in 2008, he moved to Kansas City and worked as an auditor, and soon thereafter received my CPA certification. He never felt pressured to join the family business, but in 2011 he came back to work in operations in SMC's Kansas City sheet plant. He jumped into implementing new plant scheduling software and he hasn't looked back. In mid-2013, he and his family moved to Springfield to support the continued growth of SMC, as part of the accounting team.

Matt Davis has corrugated dust in his veins. His grandfather owned and operated successful box plants in Iowa during the 1930s – 60s. His dad, Jim Davis, worked over 30 years with Deline Box before starting Packaging Express with Matt in Colorado Springs, CO, in 1998. This adventure began over a family breakfast when Jim asked his family if anyone wanted to be part of a sheet plant he was considering starting. Matt was already scheduled to spend a year teaching in Ecuador, but told his dad when he got back he was in. From then on they built a company based on speed for customers and making employees feel like family.
About Matt Davis, President, Packaging Express
Matt Davis comes from a proud family of corrugated box makers. His grandfather, TJ McLaughlin, owned and operated successful box plants in Iowa during the 1930’s – 1960’s. Matt’s Dad, Jim Davis, worked over 30 years with Deline Box before starting Packaging Express in Colorado Springs, CO in 1998. Matt’s brother Pete (Deline Box), Uncle Jack Mclaughlin (CorrChoice) and cousin Jim McLaughlin (WSA-USA) are all in the box business. Matt has just recently hired his younger cousin Andrew Bell at Packaging Express, representing the fourth generation of corrugated manufacturing in the family. Today Matt owns and operates Packaging Express with the same passion and pride that his Father and Grandfather had for quality corrugated packaging!
Packaging Express is one of the premier sheet plants in Colorado, located in Colorado Springs at the foot of Pike’s Peak. In the last 2 years Packaging Express grew out of their original 45,000 sq ft plant and moved to their current 94,000 sq ft plant. Packaging Express has recently added two new machines to their plant to meet the increasing demand in the Rocky Mountain Region – a Baysek Die Cutter and an Emba 175 box maker. Packaging Express is also proud to have a dedicated and talented team of 25 employees with an average tenure of 9+ years.
Matt and his wife Maggie have two daughters, Catherine and Mary Elizabeth. Matt is strong in his Faith and loves spending time with family and friends. He enjoys golf, skiing and all sporting events.

In this episode, we are talking with Steve Young, AICC Ambassador at Large.
Young has had a birds-eye view of the industry for decades thanks to his storied career at AICC. In this episode, he shares a fascinating history of AICC and the circumstances within the industry that led to its creation.
Succession plans rarely go off without some bumps in the road. Young discusses the succession process, which elevated him to the head of AICC, and eventually led to his brief departure from AICC in the mid-90s.
Looking to the future, he also shares his thoughts on where he thinks the industry is headed.

Steve Young has more than 46 years’ experience in trade association management and nonprofit governance. A 1976 graduate of the University of Toledo, he began his career as a legislative correspondent and researcher on Capitol Hill in Washington, then moved on to be a lobbyist for the National Small Business Association and Small Business Legislative Council.
The past 40 years he has been with AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, first as administrative director, executive vice president and then president. In this role he oversaw the Association’s strategic direction and all facets of its operations, including member recruitment and services; convention and trade show management, government affairs; Board of Director relations and governance.
During his tenure he also served as treasurer of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation, a 501c3 educational foundation focusing on curriculum development in packaging engineering in major universities in the US and Canada. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Council of Manufacturing Associations.
He is active in community and ecclesial activities and is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George. He is a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Front Royal, Va., and the Basilica of St. Mary in Alexandria, Va.

In this episode, we talk with Charlie Hodges, President and Chief Operating Officer for Hood Container Corporation.
Hodges has nearly 50 years in the industry and has held roles at many major companies, but he found his home at Hood Container. Inspired by a high school teacher’s passion for chemistry, Hodges went to Georgia Tech to become a chemical engineer. After graduation, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began working at Union Camp Corp., where he was given his first real taste of the pulp and paper industry.

After earning his degree in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech, Charlie went on to hold titles such as President & CEO of Port Townsend Family of Companies (Port Townsend, WA) and Senior Vice President for Georgia Pacific Corporation (Atlanta, GA) before joining Hood Container when the company was formed in 2012.
Charlie currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Fibre Box Association and American Forest and Paper Association. Additionally, he has served on the Board of Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industries (TAPPI) as well as being elected a TAPPI Fellow in 2008. In April 2022, Charlie was presented with The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation’s Circle of Distinguished Leaders award.

In this episode we talk with John Burgess, President, Pamarco.
After earning a chemistry degree, John Burgess saw a tough economy and decided to go abroad for a career. He landed in Bahrain, was told plans had changed, and was shipped off to Abu Dhabi.
After five years of pouring concrete into oil wells, Burgess decided to find a different path. With his family now in the US, he decided that he would be home.
Moving to a country he barely knew; Burgess joined his father and brother at Pamarco. With a brief detour from the company notwithstanding, that is where he created a career that would last him a lifetime.
Working his way through the company and building his leadership style as he saw success Burgess eventually earned the role of President.
About John Burgess

John started his career at Pamarco as a Technical Sales Representative in the Northeast in 1987 before becoming Plant Manager of the Dallas and California facilities from 1988-1992. After a brief stint away, he returned to Pamarco as Plant Manager of the Roselle, NJ facility before being promoted to VP Manufacturing and then GM of the Gravure and Emboss Divisions. John was promoted to President of the Flexo Division in 2011. Prior to joining Pamarco, he worked with Halliburton Services for five years in the oilfields of Abu Dhabi and Oman in various roles, ending as Field Chemist in 1987.
John’s education was in the UK, graduating from Turton High School in 1978 and being awarded a diploma in Chemistry from Sheffield Hallam University in 1981, prior to immigrating to the United States.
John resides in New Jersey with his wife and two children, where he spends his spare time as an avid golfer.

In this episode we talk with Gary Brewer, President, Package Crafters, Inc. and Creative Packaging, Inc.
Brewer saw his path. The company he was working for was paying for his graduate degree. He and the son of the company President would take over the company from their fathers someday.
Then life took a turn. Brewer and his father were let go. After a fruitless six-month job search Brewer called his dad and the outcome of that call ended up being Package Crafters.
Brewer put everything he had on the line to start the company which is now in its 20th year. Acquiring Package Crafters in 2015 brought in new opportunities and challenges, especially when trying to lead from hundreds of miles away.
About Gary
After getting his degrees in chemical engineering and pulp and paper science at North Carolina State in 1992, Brewer began his career as a Process Engineer at St. Joe Paper Company in Port St. Joe. Fla. He then joined the largest independent corrugated converter in North Carolina.
During that time Brewer completed an MBA at Wake Forest University and, shortly thereafter in 2003, he and his father founded Package Crafters in High Point, NC, leading with the promise of a three-day lead time to his new customers. In 2015, he extended his geographic footprint by acquiring Creative Packaging in Savannah, GA.
He has served on the AICC's board of directors in various roles over the last eight years and is currently Vice Chairman with plans to assume the Chairmanship in 2025.

Rather than pursuing a career in law as she had planned, Nelson returned home when her father, the founder of Royal Containers called. It was supposed to be temporary, but she turned it into her career and found her passion in trying to build and grow what her father had created.
Founder Ross Nelson, after a rough start causing the family to lose everything, built Royal into a strong company. Several years after the next generation came into the business a decision had to be made about the company's direction. Kim Nelson looked at the company as a business, and if it were run as a successful business could benefit the family. Her father agreed and knew the company had to grow, but others in the family thought differently. Kim honestly shares the challenges her family faced during this transition.

Since joining Royal Containers in 1992, Kim Nelson has been on a journey dedicated to the company’s long-term success. After the transfer of management from founder Ross Nelson to the next generation in 2009, Kim has been able to lean, not only an extensive understanding of sales, service and production in corrugated packaging but also a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honors) degree earned from Brock University.
Since taking on the role of President & CEO, Kim has led the future of Royal Containers in part by becoming positioned as Chairman of the Board and shareholder at Tencorr Packaging and Greenpac Mill. She also led the acquisition of C & B Display Packaging in 2019.
Kim’s service as President of The Independent Packaging Association (AICC) Canada and Chairman of AICC International is formally recognized in a 2018 induction into AICC’s Industry Hall of Fame. She is currently the Overseas Director and Business Advisor with the association.
Kim leads by example as an international Triathlon competitor and CrossFit Games athlete. Her teammates call her audacious and authentic, but Kim credits planning and training for her placement on leaderboards and as a 19-time Ironman finisher.
Kim chooses to live, work, play and raise her family not far from where she herself grew up, north of Toronto. As a mother of three, her family brings Kim her greatest happiness.

Wager was recruited by the founder of Peachtree Packaging when we was working after school as a golf caddy. After graduating high school Wagner joined the air force and then studied at UGA, where in his junior year the Peachtree’s founder asked him to come back after he graduated. Working throughout the plant, and excelling in sales Wagner, with several partners, eventually bought Peachtree Packaging.
Wagner said, “the company is continuing to learn and evolve and spend capital to add assets for what we want to do and increase our capabilities. We care about investing in our people and attracting the best talent. We are constantly asking how we can push the company forward with better service and solutions to bring value to the marketplace and help as many people as we can.”
Throughout his story you hear the value of his work ethic and how his belief in what Peachtree could be gained him friends in the company and helped the company grow.

David recently was recognized by Clemson University, receiving the Bill Treadaway Award for outstanding contributions to graphic arts education. David also was honored by the national news program “Eye on America” for his and BCM Ink’s contribution to sustainable technology for a healthy environment.
PresidentAs BCM Inks’ second-generation owner, Rob is involved in operating and growing the business with the same integrity and philosophies his father incorporated when founding the Cincinnati-based company. With more than two decades of experience working at BCM Inks, Rob provides sales and technical service to clients as well as oversees daily functions of the enterprise.Prior to joining BCM, Rob was regional sales manager and financial administrator for two start-up Internet companies. Rob is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a BSBA degree in finance.Rob also is an author, having been published in numerous books and magazines including “Sustainable Graphic Design,” “Corrugated Today” and “Ink World.” In addition, Rob is a popular speaker who has educated audiences at AICC, ACCCSA, FPPA and Fox Valley Technical College.

Michael Lafave is the senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Kruger Packaging Group since 2015. As such, he oversees the operations of five production sites in Québec, Ontario and the United States. He also heads the Kruger Recycling Division. A graduate of McGill University, Michael began his career in international sales by working for a forest products export agency for nine years before joining Kruger in 1999. Before his current role at Kruger, Michael held various positions within the company such as Vice President, Sales Administration for the Paper Division; Vice President, Newsprint Sales; Senior Vice President, Supply Management and Senior Vice President, Containerboard & Packaging and Recycling. Michael is chair of the International Corrugated Case Association (ICCA) and acted as chair of the Canadian Corrugated and Containerboard Association (CCCA) from May 2015 until May 2017.

After earning a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Charles Malo began his career as a controller at Etcan, a division of cascades, in 1990. He joined Cascades Containerboard Packaging when it was created in 1997 and worked his way up the ranks. Over the years, he became Director of Administration, Regional General Manager, Operations, for Central Canada, and Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer in the corrugated cardboard business line.
In 2008, he also took over management of the folding carton division, becoming Vice- President and Chief Operating Officer, Packaging. In April 2015, he was named Chief Operating Officer, overseeing not only transformation operations, but also the production of containerboard. He became President and Chief Operating Officer in January 2016. This appointment makes him the third president of Cascades Containerboard Packaging, succeeding Alain Memaire and Marc-André Dépin. Like his predecessors, he embraces Cascades’ values and believes that everyone should work in a safe and secure environment. He continues to pursue the business objectives established in conjunction with the various management teams to ensure the growth of Cascades Containerboard Packaging and Cascades. Mr. Malo is well-known in the industry for his knowledge and leadership. He is an active member of boards of directors for various associations, companies and non-profit organizations. For example, he currently sits on the board of the Fondation Hôpital Pierre-Boucher.

In this episode we talk with Jana Harris.
Jana has come a long way from being the child rollerskating around the boxplant founded by her parents. Always with an entrepreneurial spirit, she started a business at the age of 29, only to be forced to fire her partner a year later. Later, her compassion and education lead her to a four-year stint in healthcare. Then four years later, she and her sister, Janice Cox, now CFO of the family companies, were brought into Harris Packaging by their father after he had to replace a once-trusted employee.
While Jana’s path might not have been direct, with the support of family and strong teams, her companies have seen double-digit growth over the last 10 years. Now, Harris Packaging is the largest sheet plant in Texas, and American Carton is a thriving folding carton plant.
Jana also shares her passion for education about and for the industry by sharing her experience working closely with UTA and a new project with a STEM high school.
Jana Harris is a second-generation owner and CEO of her family’s manufacturing business, Harris Packaging and American Carton. She is the current AICC Chairman and is the 3rd woman to Chair for AICC. She serves on the President’s Advisory Board at her local university, the University of Texas at Arlington and is very active with their Packaging Program as well as with the College of Business. Jana and her husband Zachary Campbell became partners in a wine label out of Sonoma CA called Sanglier Cellars as well as recently becoming silent partners in a scratch Italian restaurant, Tre Mogli, which is in their hometown. In addition to the love she has for boxes and wine and great food, her interests include family, travel, buying new manufacturing equipment and educating college and high school students about the packaging industry.
