Where does the trope of the human animal come from and why is it fallacious? Why is neutrality a form of oblivion? That is what I am discussing in today's episode.

The International Day of Women's Rights is coming up and I'm already feeling just a tiny bit apprehensive. While I believe that awareness raising is important, I resent the capitalist co-optation of a day that is anything but meant to make profits. My other caveat is inappropriate messaging that leads us to think it's about celebrating strong women in ways that actually silence them and wash over the real struggles that women are facing. And can we talk about why we cannot assume any universality of women's needs?
Mentioned readings:
Lila Abu Lughod - Do Muslim Women Need Saving?
Giorgio Agamben - Homo Sacer
Phyllis Chester - Women and Madness
Saidiya Hartman - Wayward Lives
Chandra Mohanty - Feminism and War
Saba Mahmood - Politics of Piety
Sabrina Strings - Fearing the Black Body

This episode is a more personal follow up on the implications of alienation as someone who is diagnosed with both autism and ADHD.
DISCLAIMER: This reflects my personal experience and might not be universal to every AuDHDer. I highly recommend Robert Chapman's book The Empire of Normality for a scientific analysis of some of the aspects I discuss in this episode.

Content warning: mention of war, genocide and abuse. In the face of current events, do we have a moral obligation to care? Or do we have a right to put our own happiness first and look away? Are claims of empathy always real? These are a few of the questions I discuss in this episode.
You’ll also hear one of my favorite poems, ‘Home’ by Warsan Shire as an introduction to the episode.
