NOTE: This episode was recorded prior to April 25, when Todd died. The previous episode was recorded after, because I wanted to address his death on the next episode that I released. Kevin from History Goon once again joins Bill on this one, and as of the time of release, Kevinâs podcast, History Goon has been released! Show link is with the links below.
In this episode of Crimes, Killers, Cults and Beer, wetake a deep breath and dive into one of the most disturbing and controlling religious movements in modern America â the Word of Faith Fellowship, led by the iron-fisted Jane Whaley. From her pulpit in Spindale, North Carolina, Whaley built a cult cloaked in Christianity, where members endured public beatings, emotional manipulation, and âblastingâ prayers that sounded more like exorcisms than sermons.
We break down Janeâs rise from math teacher to spiritualdictator, the shocking allegations of abuse and isolation, and the hold she maintained over followers for decades â even banning laughter, music, and contact with the outside world. Itâs a tale of spiritual control, psychological domination, and the terrifying power of blind faith.
Grab a beer â youâre gonna need it â and join us as we pullback the curtain on the Word of Faith Fellowship cult, wheresalvation came with a side of fear.

In this episode, we're cracking open a cold one and getting into the twisted saga of Clarence âPreacherâ Heatley â a man whose nickname made him sound like a man of God, but whose actions were straight out of hell. Preacher wasnât just a gangster â he was the head of a ruthless criminal enterprise that ran Harlem like a sermon soaked in blood.
From kidnapping and extortion to drug dealing and murder,Heatleyâs Preacher Crew turned fear into currency and loyalty into a death sentence. Weâre talking about a guy who turned a hotel into his personal torture chamber and handed down his own brand of justice like it was gospel. Youâll hear how he rose to power, what brought him down, and why his story still sends a chill down New Yorkâs spine.
We also have sad news, regarding Todd, the first CKCB co-host, and weâre joined once again by History Goon, Kevin Carleton...And, he has an announcement!

It was time, folks! During the Dexter episode, Bill told Sandra about Toy Box Killer, David Parker Ray, after mentioning the killer from the TV show that could have been inspired by him. She was a little spooked by the very brief description, so Bill figured, LETâS COVER THAT ONE!!!
David Parker Ray was a sadistic serial rapist and killer. He would abduct women, and restrain them in his toy box, a service trailer that he turned into an S&M torture chamber. He would drug them, and when they woke up, he would play a sadistic tape recording of him telling the victim exactly what to expect for the duration of their stay. He would then rape the women for days, weeks, and in some cases, months.
3 women survived, although he is strongly suspected of killing many more, as well as abducting and torturing many more. But it was the heroic actions of 3 victims, one of which escaped, that brought Rayâs crimes to light, and led to his arrest and conviction.

On this episode, weâre covering a tale of 2 brothers. 2 brothers who couldnât be more different. Steven and Cary Stayner. The whole saga of the Stayner family is heartbreaking, and one of the strangest cases in true crime. In the early 70s, Steven Stayner was abducted by a predator who in addition to abusing him for 7 years, attempted to make him his son..until he aged out, and the predator tried to make him recruit a new brother. He refused, but the predator found one anyway. Rather than let him put this new boy through the hell he had gone through, Steven and the new boy escaped, and both were reunited with their families. Steven had been gone for 7 years, and the media frenzy made Cary fade into the background. If youâre unfamiliarwith the story, I wonât spoil it for you as to what happened toCary...but its crazy, and not in a good way.
Joining us once again is Jody Plauche, who had some invaluable input into Stevenâs story, considering he too was abducted by a predator when he was very young. This was a great episode, and thanks to Jody for coming on!
You can buy his book that he wrote about his experience, as well the actions that made his father, Gary into a hero here:

David Berg was a cult leader that emerged from the Pentecostal movement in the early 1900s. His parents were both evangelists, who preached the faith healing doctrine.
As a kid, he was abused by a babysitter, which resulted in him becoming s-xually super charged for the rest of his life. He got into ministry as well, and was heavily influenced by William Branham early on.
He set up a hippie type church, that combined hippie culture with the Branham message. But as time went on, he became focused on s-x, which would later include relations with everyone, even children. He wound up fleeing the US, and would fund his cult by forcing the women to go out and seduce men for money, a practice that he called flirtyfishing. He would do no time, and died in Portugal.
The cult is still active today under the name The Family International. There's alot more to the story, so join us!

Hey, everyone..Tonight, we have a special episode because weâre introducing a brand new podcast called History Goon, and we have the host of the show on with us to tell us a story. Welcome Kevin, as he takes the lead, and tells us the story. This episode was recorded about 2 months ago.
The 1986FBI Miami shootout occurredon April 11, 1986, in Miami-Dade County, Florida,U.S. (the specific area was incorporated as Pinecrest in 1996), when a small group of field agents forthe FBI attempted to apprehend William Russell Matix and Michael Lee Platt, who were suspected of committing a series of violent crimes in and around the Miamimetropolitan area.
Although they had partially surrounded the suspects after maneuvering them off a local road, the agents involved quickly found their firepower was outmatched by the weapons which Matix and Platt had in their vehicle. During the gun battle which ensued, Platt in particular was able torepeatedly return fire despite sustaining multiple hits.
Two Special Agents died from their wounds, while five other agents were injured by gunfire. The shootout ended when both Matix and Platt were killed.
The incident is infamous as one of the most violent episodes in the history of the FBI and is often studied in law enforcement training. The scale of the shootout led to the introduction of more effective handguns, primarily switching from revolvers to semi-automatics, in the FBI and many police departments around the United States.

Some cults arenât religious. Tonight on CKCB Features, Iâm talking with a survivor named Al Tessier, who was part of the Acting Lab Senior Ensemble. An acting class, led by a Hollywood reject, who later turned his organization into a cult. This is a fascinating story that reminds us to be vigilant in any situation that is led by a charismatic figure. Small cults can be extremely damaging.

In October, 1979, most of the student body at Miami Aerospace Academy went into riot mode. Strange occurrences were happening too, such as levitating, super human strength, and an overall pack mentality. But, what caused it? It was reported as mass demonic possession, and this event would be the catalyst that launched the Satanic Panic into the mainstream the very next year, in 1980.
Join us as we tell you what happened, who the key antagonists were, and what could have sparked an entire school into this massive display of pack violence. There were definitely warning signs. An over ambitious exiled Cuban soldier with a sadistic mean streak, as well as dabbling with dark practices on a large scale.

This episode is a textbook on how NOT to commit murder. You have a somewhat wealthy man, who marries into a super wealthy family, just to grow the family. A marriage of convenience. But the man wants it ALL, except for his wife. A gorgeous young woman enters the picture, and they two begin manipulating each other. This leads to the murder, and an attempted murder of the manâs wife.
Diedre Hunt and Kostas Fotopoulos tell you what NOT to do if you want to take over your spouseâs inherited wealth. This is a short episode, but its packed full of information, moreso than some of our longer ones.
Also, its a Florida story! Daytona Beach!

Anthony Sowell was a very vicious, but lesser known serial killer. He was the worst serial killer in all of Clevelandâs history, and was dubbed âThe Cleveland Stranglerâ by the media. He had a rough childhood, and was abused by his mother, but he also abused his nieces, sexually. He joined the Marines, and should have stayed there. He was a good Marine. But after he got out, he turned to crack, and startedsexually assaulting women. In 1985, he kidnapped and raped and assaulted a woman who escaped, and he was sent to prison for 15 years for that. When he got out, he went back to his old habits, but escalated.
He had a major heart attack in 2007, and THEN began his killing spree. He killed 11 women between 2007 and 2009âŠ.all while using crack and alcohol, WITH a pacemaker. He discarded the bodies in his own home, causing an awful smell, that was blamed on a sausage factory next door to his house.
When he was caught in October, 2009, the bodies were discovered, and Cleveland was in shock.

Charles Bronson is a life long British criminal. He never killed anyone, but not due to lack of trying. He was a menace to society, and had such an infamous reputation that he was shuffled back and forth to just about every prison in England.
He raised hell. His most famous antics were going onto the roofs of prisons, and staying there for days, while causing extensive damage to the rooftop. He wasnât afraid to fight anyone, and would constantly take on groups of prison guards, as well as inmates. He even took a prison warden hostage! In a rare bout of freedom, he joined an illegal underground bare knuckleboxing ring, and was undefeated.
He was also a gifted artist, and his work has been auctioned off, and donated to charity. He was also great with special needs kids.
