In this episode, we delve into the intricacies of postpartum thyroiditis, a condition affecting the thyroid gland in the first year after childbirth. We explore its causes, phases, symptoms, and effective treatments. Join us to gain a comprehensive understanding of this condition and learn practical strategies for managing it.
Key Points:
1. Introduction to Postpartum Thyroiditis:
Definition: Postpartum thyroiditis is an inflammation of the thyroid gland occurring within the first year after giving birth. Causes: Immune system changes, hormonal fluctuations, genetic predisposition, prior thyroid disorders, and environmental factors contribute to its development.2. Causes of Postpartum Thyroiditis:
Immune System Changes: Pregnancy alters the immune system to tolerate the fetus, which can lead to immune attacks on the thyroid after childbirth. Hormonal Fluctuations: Significant hormonal changes during and after pregnancy, including fluctuations in estrogen and hCG, may trigger the condition. Genetic Predisposition: A family history of autoimmune thyroid disorders increases the risk. Prior Thyroid Disorders: Previous thyroid issues can make recurrence likely. Stress and Environmental Factors: Stress and environmental triggers can exacerbate the condition.3. Phases of Postpartum Thyroiditis:
Hyperthyroid Phase: Early stage with excessive thyroid hormone release, causing symptoms like anxiety, palpitations, and weight loss. Hypothyroid Phase: Follows hyperthyroidism, with underactive thyroid symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Third Phase: Often in 5-9 months postpartum, with severe symptoms, high TPO antibodies, and low thyroid hormones.4. Symptoms of Postpartum Thyroiditis:
Hyperthyroid Symptoms: Nervousness, restlessness, increased heart rate, sweating, weight loss, fatigue, tremors, and heat sensitivity. Hypothyroid Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, depression, dry skin, cold sensitivity, constipation, muscle/joint pain, thinning hair, and puffy face.5. Medical Treatment Options:
Observation and Monitoring: Mild cases may resolve on their own without intervention. Medication: Thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine) for prolonged hypothyroid symptoms; carbimazole/PTU for hyperthyroid phase. Beta-blockers: Manage symptoms like rapid heart rate and anxiety during the hyperthyroid phase.6. Naturopathic/Nutritional Protocol:
Diet: Nutrient-dense, wholefood diet, gluten, and dairy-free. Include sources of iodine, selenium, and balanced carbohydrates. Lifestyle: Emphasize rest, self-care, support systems, and stress-reduction techniques like meditation and yoga. Supplements: Selenium, NAC/liposomal glutathione, antioxidants, myo-inositol, ubiquinol, vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, and optimal iron and ferritin levels. Herbs: Withania for hypo stages, licorice tea for hypo phase, lemon balm tea for hyper stage.7. Management and Testing:
Frequent Testing: Regular monitoring during acute flares every 4-8 weeks. Symptom Management: Adjusting nutrients and medications as needed until symptoms stabilize.Connect with Us:

So you've heard about starting your periods early and PMS...
What about menorrhagia?
Dysmenorrhoea?
Amenorrhoea?
Tune in for more breakdown into what female hormonal imbalances can cause!
-
Do you have Fatigue, Body aches and Brain Fog?
Do you think your thyroid could be the cause?
How about if you have fixed your thyroid and you still feel, tired, stressed out, no libido?
What would you and your practitioner address next?
Remember the hierarchy of the endocrine system?
Always address the adrenals first, then the thyroid then your ovaries that produce your sex hormones!
Check out the 5 drivers of ovarian hormonal imbalances.
I then go to address 2 of the 6 common disorders in the reproductive years of women.
Later we look at perimenopause and menopause.
Ah! The joys of being a woman!:)
-
Is it enough to check your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)?
How about just adding the T4 (Thyroxine) hormone to the panel of tests?
- If that is all you test, you have to assume that T4 is converting to T3 (in the serum), therefore driving the cell's metabolic machinery.
Unfortunately, everyone's conversion happens at different rates!
To know, you must assess T3 and the ratio of T3/T4
What if too much T4 has been converted to RT3 - and therefore even with normal T3 serum levels there may be a metabolic block to its action?
To know this ratio, you must assess RT3 and the ratio of T3/RT3
Antibodies if you think you have Hashimoto's?
Or if you already have another autoimmune disease like psoriasis or vitiligo or Type 1 Diabetes, Coeliac Disease, even pregnancy!
Definitely need to test!Does this make sense or is it just gobbledygook?
Listen to my latest episode as I explain ALL of the above!
-
Does TSH predict your thyroid function?
Is it true that subclinical hypothyroidism should not be treated?
Can TSH be used as the sole diagnostic criteria for thyroid dysfunction?
Find out why it is not enough to just check your TSH levels like most practitioners do (because that was what we were taught in medical school) as TSH DOES NOT DEFINE your thyroid function.
And when your TSH is in the 'normal range', but you still have symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, body aches, and brain fog...you NEED to investigate more!
Learn more about the myths of TSH in my latest episode NOW! -
Some medications affect the thyroid enzymes D1 and D2 that convert T4 to T3. Could you be taking one of them?
At least 150 industrial chemicals have been shown to result in the reduction in TSH and/or T4.
Work with the concept of TOTAL TOXIC LOAD instead of trying to find each individual toxin.
What simple tips can you help to 'detoxify' your current environment and body?
What are the top 10 Signs and Symptoms to ask about when suspect Suboptimal Thyroid Function?
-
Did you know what are the Top 6 KEY NUTRIENTS for thyroid health that you may be lacking in?
Can you name them?
And do you know why they are important?
-
We always think of inflammation as what we can see on the surface of our bodies when we cut our skin or break a bone - red, hot, sore, and reduced movement.
But internal inflammation caused by excess body fat, environmental toxicants, and infections, to name a few can cause more damage to our thyroid gland!
How about Gluten and Autoimmune Thyroid Disease you may ask!
Listen now as I delve deeper into the root causes of thyroid dysfunction.
-
Do you have Fatigue, Body aches and Brain Fog?
Do you think your thyroid could be the cause?
You’ve been to your practitioner but they say your thyroid tests come back as 'normal'?
Do you think they are doing the right tests?
In this first episode I start to explore the root causes of why your thyroid starts to fail.
-
Herbs are medicinal plants that help the body adapt to stress or recover from stress.
They also help improve endurance during fatigue.
Which adaptogens to use though?
Whether you have levels of high or low cortisol states?
Or if you are looking at the stress adaptation stages - the arousal (cortisol is high and DHEA levels is high or normal) or adaptation (cortisol is still high but DHEA is declining) or exhaustion (low cortisol and DHEA levels) stages?

Think about key nutirients.
We don’t want to take 10 thousand different supplements, right?
But what we take for our nutrient debt, we want to optimize the doses for our bodies to function properly, that's the main thing.
So what would be the key nutrients for the HPA axis dysfunction?

Melancholic Depression vs Atypical Depression - which causes your cortisol to go up, and which one makes it come down?
Which type of depression is more 'treatment resistant' in the conventional medicine world?
Which type of depression causes more fatigue? How about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and how it relates to cortisol levels?
PMS?
PMDD?
Could addressing your HPA axis dysfunction help these 'disorders'?
Are chronic disorders complicated or complex? Where do you start in addressing them?
-
Is there such a thing as Adrenal Fatigue?
Not really. at least not in the Functional Medical world.
We call it HPA (Hypothalamus - Pituitary - Adrenal) axis dysfunction! That certainly is a long word!
So today I want to touch on how this dysfunction can then cause chronic fatigue in people.
As it is a rather huge topic, I have broken it down into several episodes in the next few weeks.
Remember bite-size information is easier to digest! Especially when you or your loved ones suffer from fatigue!
-
How should you be thinking about your fatigue?
Are there many types of fatigue?
Where and when do you start addressing it?
What do you do?
And it's not about just patching the problem. You know it's not a 'one size fits all' kind of treatment.
It's not a pill for an ill, but it's about thinking and linking things.
Identifying the root causes of your fatigue...and trust me, there could be so many reasons you are tired, or have chronic pain and brain fog. Or that could be one!
Some of these causes then lead to synergistically worsening your fatigue...so let's dive in!
