Today I’m joined by Cara to talk all about movies and specifically why more and more people, native English speakers included, are finding they need to turn on the subtitles when they’re watching them!

Cara Leopold is the creator of the Leo Listening Movie Club where she helps film-loving English learners understand and discuss movies together so they can master conversational English.

From September 13th-20th 2023, Cara is organising the Back-to-School Movie Challenge, a 1-week taste of what it's like to be in a movie club. By watching and discussing clips from high school movies together, you’ll learn new vocabulary, catch fast-spoken English and practise your speaking and writing skills with other movie-loving English learners. The challenge includes access to a discussion forum as well as a live Zoom session on September 20th to chat with her and other film lovers about the movie clips.

Note: As this podcast is no longer recording new episodes (I know, sad-face-emoji, amirite?), Deep Talkers is closed.

  • Today I'm joined by Nora, business communication genius and tattoo and festival lover!

She shares with us how tattoos (she has either 19.5 or 20.5!) helped her learn to love her body and music festivals are her way of letting herself have fun after many years of denying herself it.

It's a surprisingly deep conversation and an absolute honour to have been part of - my thanks to Nora!

Nora's Masterclass, Effortless English Emails, is taking place on August 10th 2023 (but available afterwards as a recording) and looks to be EVERYTHING you need to conquer effective professional email communication.

Today I’m joined by Clare to talk about her life of music. In this conversation, Clare shares her experience growing up in a highly musical household, her classical training and later love affair with folk music, how music has taken her around the world and introduced her to new people, and the power of music to bring people together.

Clare is also an English teacher, she has a website where you can find lots of free resources to help you on your language journey:

    www.expressyourselfinenglish.com

Also, here are some links Clare has provided for music that she plays and recommends:

I play in a duet Broch Inspectors (violin/tenor guitar/voice). Mainly instrumental music of Ireland and Scotland, and we're currently doing a tune a day -

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrochInspectors/

    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/broch.inspectors/

    YouTube: https://youtube.com/@BrochInspectors

Also I play in an Irish trio TRADA Irish songs with voice, guitar, flute and violin

https://tradamusic.com/ (also on social media as "tradamusic")

Here's my YouTube playlist featuring my favourite folk fiddlers (violinists).

    https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL632GLNcY2cB-PPJq97Sk-yCLr25ggPkM

Here's my YouTube playlist of Irish music documentaries (with a strong bias to the fiddle players!)

  • Today’s episode is a little bit different (because it’s episode THIRTY! and that’s super exciting!)

I’m joined by Clare, my partner, and we chat about things we’ve listened to, read, and watched which we find interesting.

It’s eclectic (read: all over the place!) and I hope you enjoy it.

Here are Clare’s notes from the conversation:

    Whale Song:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/30/science/humpback-whale-songs-cultural-evolution.html

    and just in case: https://www.bardeen.ai/posts/how-to-bypass-a-paywall

    and a very short video

    Radiolab

Two of my all time favs from the archives:

Los Frikis: How a group of 80’s Cuban misfits found rock-and-roll and created a revolution within a revolution, going into exile without ever leaving home. In a collaboration with Radio Ambulante, reporter Luis Trelles bring us the story of punk rock’s arrival in Cuba and a small band of outsiders who sentenced themselves to death and set themselves free.

    https://radiolab.org/podcast/los-frikis

Stranger in Paradise: Back in 1911, a box with a dead raccoon in it showed up in Washington D.C., at the office of Gerrit S. Miller. After pulling it out and inspecting it, he realized this raccoon was from the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe, and unlike anything he’d ever seen before. He christened it Procyon minor and in doing so changed the history of Guadeloupe forever.

Today we travel from the storage rooms of the Smithsonian to the sandy beaches of Guadeloupe, chasing the tale of this trash can tipping critter. All the while trying to uncover what it means to be special.

    https://radiolab.org/podcast/stanger-paradise

And the one about the Seagulls:

In the 1970s, as LGBTQ+ people in the United States faced conservatives whose top argument was that homosexuality is “unnatural,” a pair of young scientists discovered on a tiny island off the coast of California a colony of seagulls that included… a significant number of female homosexual couples making nests and raising chicks together. The article that followed upended the culture’s understanding of what’s natural and took the discourse on homosexuality in a whole new direction.

    https://radiolab.org/podcast/seagulls

And lastly, Lulu Miller's debut novel is excellent, its called Why Fish Don't Exist:

    https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/50887097

And to these notes, I, Rhiannon, will add:

  • Today I’m joined by Mikey to chat about the impact that the menstrual cycle, with its four distinct phases (menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal), can have on how we exercise.

Mikey and I don’t only talk about the biological aspect of this issue but also the social. Are menstrual cycles taken into account during qualification courses to become Personal Trainers, for example? Is it still taboo to talk about periods and cycles in the gym? How can people who menstruate begin the. - often overwhelming - task of trying to learn how best to work with their bodies?

  • Today, I’m joined by Marcela, an Art Therapist based in Scotland, about her work and training in Art Therapy. In our conversation, she explains what art therapy is and how it relates to other creative therapies, why it’s such a powerful tool for helping children, and gives us an insight into what her sessions with clients look like.

Before our chat, she shared with me the following interview with Graham Music, who’s talking (among other things) about the importance of play and creativity in children and how therapists can make use of this in their work. She recommended I just watch the first 15-20 minutes but I ended up watching the whole thing - it’s really interesting!

  • Today, we catch the second part of my conversation with Fernanda about a recent (yucky) experience she had while running her Instagram page.

Fernanda (on instagram as @fernanda_englishteacher_br ) is an English teacher with 12 years experience. She specialises in helping people - mainly other English teachers - pass high-level Cambridge exams so that they feel more empowered and confident in their abilities. Despite holding a Celta Pass A, she doesn’t hide her dislike of many traditional ways of teaching, especially the use of coursebooks, and tends to follow a more holistic approach to teaching, also known as Dogme.

On her Instagram page, she shares useful language for using in exams, as well as techniques and tips to help you get the best result possible. She works with students in 1-1 classes and also runs workshops and you can contact her about that by sending her a DM on Instagram.

Today, I’m joined by Claire who’s chosen to talk about the witch trials which took place in Scotland between 1590 and 1727 and why there is a campaign now to have those women and men who were executed for witchcraft to be officially pardoned by the government. To start us off with this topic, Claire has found us two texts to read:

A Brief History of Calling Women Witches

    https://lithub.com/a-brief-history-of-calling-women-witches/

Why the witch-hunt victims of early modern Britain have come back to haunt us

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/oct/24/why-the-witch-hunt-victims-of-early-modern-britain-have-come-back-to-haunt-us

During the conversation, she also mentions the Witches of Scotland campaign and you can find more information about that here:

I also recommend a podcast episode I listened to a year or so ago about the European witch craze:
