500 to 1500 AD, that is the middle ages...a time of knights and princesses and kings and warfare. A time of leech medicine and medieval tournaments. A lot of weird stuff happened in the middle ages, so today we separate the wheat from the chaff from the scythe from the peasant and talk about the best inventions of medieval times.

Alternative education seems like it means any form of education that does not mean sitting in a classroom for 8 hours staring at the clock. It can involve outdoor education, where students go on hikes to learn about the natural world, movement education, learning done through dance and song. Or most recently inquiry based learning which favours hands on experimental learning over tests and rote memorisation. Alternative education has been a large part of our lives from participating in wilderness programs to schools in foreign countries so it's one we have always been fascinated by. So today we take a longer look at some popular forms of alternative education (waldorf, homeschooling) and how they are working out.

The current form of chess arose in the 15th century after evolving from a similar game of Indian origin, today chess is one of the worlds most popular games played by millions of people worldwide. Chess has been studied by computer scientists for artificial intelligence research by creating The Deep Blue program to battle against grand masters, it's been adapted into movie and Netflix shows both fictional and real, and founded educational programs for impoverished students in inner city New York. Today we take a look at how chess permeates the culture at large and we celebrate this amazing game that humans have played for a long long time.

Another year is in the books, and 2021 may not have been the year that we exactly wanted, but it was definitely the year we got....we had some space exploration, some ufo nonsense, some cool discoveries including an indestructible beetle being used to influence airplane turbine design. Furthermore Biden tried to do some climate stuff, Elon musk did do some rocket stuff and we are here to wrap it all up.

Sea slug hermaphrodite life, hooded seal’s giant hood, bower bird’s dance, porcupine’s pee pee ritual...Sex. Mating. Reproduction, these are all vital things for the survival of humans and of course for survival of the rest of the animal kingdom. But don’t be mistaken, animals that have sex for pleasure is very much the exception. Most have brutal, competitive rituals that are extremely dangerous for the female and death for the males through intense competition. As we’ll see, there are so many different ways to get it on. From kangaroos that have three vaginas to giraffes that taste their partners pee to see if she is in heat…making babies in nature can be complicated, horrifying, and romantic all in the same moment, just like an Orangutans barbed penis.

The Ig Nobel Prizes honor research achievements that make people LAUGH, then THINK. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people’s interest in science, medicine, and technology. Every year they are hosted at Harvard and they are handed their awards by actual nobel prize winners. so we did this last year to honor the 2019 winners and now we are revisiting the ig nobels to highlight some of our favorite winners from 2020 and 20201

One of the coolest things you get to do when you have a little clone of yourself and your partner is to name the thing. you can go with a biblical name like john or James or Mary...names that aren't really cool but won't be stupid either....or you can name your child bamboo, or penguin or Unicorn Kittyfuck....which might make your kid super weird. you can name your child a generational trend like any girl named Katniss in the last ten years or like the Prolifera of Luke that came out after the first star wars was released. how we name our babies reflects alot of the social pressures and anxieties happening through time and its incredibly interesting to look at and dissect these trends...so today we take a peek at 100 years of data from naming trends and share what we've found interesting.

The Fermi Paradox - Where are the aliens?
If you look up at the stars on a backpacking trip you'll notice that theres a fuckton of them...and as discovered in the 90's many of htese stars have planets orbiting around them...you may have asked yourself...is there anyoen living up there??? it turns out that mathematically, there really should be other civilizations doing stuff out there...maybe they are harnessing the power of their own sun or colonising universes or uploading there consciousnesses to shared virtual reality simulation...i dont know, but mathematically they should be there....so why haven't we heard anything yet? I mean to say we haven't heard even a whisper of their existence...how can this be possible? this is the fermi paradox

The Guinness Book of World Records, is a reference book published annually, listing world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world...and heres how it started, in november 1951 an english-south african engineer dude named Sir hugh beaver went on a shooting party in ireland...after missing a shot at a golden plougher he became involved in an argument over what was the fastest game bird in europe....hugh also happened to be the managing directore of the guinness brewery...so he had this idea that these stupid arguments must be happening in pubs everywhere and he commisioned twin brothers who owned a london fact checking business to publish the book....so today we honor this book and take a look at some world records.

Gladiators were armed combatants who entertained audiences in the roman empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals and condemned criminals...most gladiators were despised slaves (the others of their class being actual slaves and actors) schooled under harsh conditions and socially marginalised;...though they could win admiration from the crowds in the coliseum, the gladiatorial games lasted for nearly a thousand years and can be thought of as an early brutal version of professional sports...so today we take a deeper look at one of the most awful but fascinating practices of the ancient romans
