While the Duke Blue Devils get an earned holiday break, the DBR Podcast crew is still hard at work. On Episode 676, we welcome back Ryan Young to the show for an awesome discussion!
Ryan Young has graduated from Fuqua and is in the real world, and we figured it was a great time to catch up with the beloved former center to see what he’s been up to since he got his Fuqua degree. He’s been able to watch several games in person this season as a fan, so we naturally get his thoughts on the current team, how they’ve been doing, and how he would have fit in the squad had he possessed one final year of eligibility.
We also get into the current state of college basketball, from the transfer portal to growing NIL numbers and how teams are affected. Of course, Ryan has a unique perspective as someone whose career started at Northwestern Wildcats as a freshman with no NIL and no transfer portal and ended with a Duke career with an extra year due to Covid and in a world where the transfer portal and NIL exists. He’s very candid with his thoughts on how the game has changed from the player’s perspective as well as the coach’s perspective, and it’s great to that he took the time to provide us with that insight.

The Devils went down to Georgia, they were looking for a game to steal. Tech was in a bind, they were way behind, and then K2 started to deal.
Ok, sorry for the stolen lyrics. The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a complete report on the game in Atlanta where Duke ran away from the Yellow Jackets behind the lethal combo of Kon and Khaman. The pick-n-roll mastery of those two players powered Duke to a 17-2 run early in the second half that gave Duke a comfortable ACC road win. In addition to the PnR mastery, the game featured perhaps the best shooting game of the season for Duke and yet another session of masterful in-your-face defense. As a special treat, you get to listen in as DBR Podcast co-host Jason Evans attended the post-game news conference and got to ask Coach Scheyer and K2 a couple questions about the impressive display Duke put on as they head into the Christmas break.

Bill Belichick’s arrival at UNC Football has brought a renewed investment in the program. But will it come at a price for UNC Basketball? Sam Klein is back to help Jason and Donald break it down on DBR Bites Episode 76.
With Belichick comes the guaranteed increased in football investments, from assistant salaries to NIL dollars. Some in UNC circles feel that boosters may sacrifice basketball for a few years for the purpose of getting UNC into either the SEC or the Big Ten. Donald, Jason, and Sam debate whether the end of UNC Basketball’s relevance is a real possibility. There’s lots to consider here: whether UNC Basketball can continue to pull in top talent, whether big boosters out there are willing to continue investing in basketball, the potential for private equity to enter the fray, and whether the SEC or Big Ten would even want them in the next decade. It’s not an easy answer and it makes for a good discussion.
After the break, we take a look at CNBC’s list of perceived college athletics valuations. While the Big Ten and SEC dominate the list, Duke is in a pretty good position. Duke Basketball helps, but it’s the overall performance of the athletics department combined with other factors that has Duke in position to be okay, no matter how conference realignment continues to map its course.

The Duke Blue Devils head to Atlanta this weekend to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and we preview it on DBR Bites Episode 75.
The Yellow Jackets stung the Devils last year in Atlanta, but once again have had a really bad start to the season. Still, they have some players who are dangerous and this is a game they’ve no doubt circled as a big time win opportunity. Donald and Jason discuss their record to date and then get into the analytics and players.
After the break, Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia got a favorable court ruling that allows him to continue to play college football next season despite playing some junior college ball. The ruling could pave the way for JUCO athletes to get a full 4 years of eligibility to pursue NIL opportunities. But some may not think it’s a great idea, and we quickly discuss the pros and cons.

The Duke Blue Devils once again struggled shooting, but their defense made the George Mason Patriots put up bricks all night in a 68-47 victory. We recap the victory on Episode 674.
Duke actually had a good start this time, but they still saw a first half where they had a large stretch with bad shooting. After reviewing the headlines, Donald and Jason review the good from the game, which was highlighted by the stellar defense. Cooper Flagg led all scorers with 24 points and another near 10-5-5 game, and there were some standout moments from other players as well. Isaiah Evans once again proved to be a microwave off the bench.
After the break, we get to the bad, led by the first half shooting woes. There were also some details that need to be worked out and we discuss how to get a couple of key contributors their confidence back. We end with our Play of the Game as Duke moves to 9-2 on the season.

As they always do, the DBR Podcast brings you a preview of Duke's next opponent. This time it is the George Mason Patriots. But, unlike other smaller conference teams, Duke has bitten off a serious challenge this time around. George Mason is good -- they'd probably be a middle of the pack ACC team if they were in the conference-- and they have a bunch of guys who used to play in power conferences who are just itching to put a major notch in their belt. This is a preview worth listening to as Duke could be in for a real challenge in this contest.
After the break, the podcast gets into the major recruiting news out of... UTAH? AJ Dybantsa, the top player in high school and one of the most effective scorers ever at the high school level, has picked BYU for his one year college career. On the one hand it is a surprising choice, but on the other hand $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Dybantsa is set to be the highest paid college basketball player of all time. The DBR Pod breaks down what this will mean for next season and for the future of NIL-driven recruiting.

Simple questions often prove to be the most difficult to answer. The Duke Basketball Roundup got a simple question from a listener a few days ago -- is this Duke team a poor shooting team from the perimeter. The answer is... complicated. Both Jason and Donald provide evidence that it is probably a better set of shooters than you think, but expecting them to hit 40+ percent from long range may be a pipe dream.
The latest episode of the DBR Podcast has other business to get to as well, and this episode begins with a discussion of football and the transfer portal. Duke has landed an elite QB in Darien Mensah and the podcast dudes have a breakdown of what his commitment means for Manny Diaz's second season in Durham. Jason and Donald also dive into the stunning football news from down the road in Chapel Hill -- will Bill Belichick be able to wake the "sleeping giant" that is UNC football?

The Duke Blue Devils didn’t look great in a win against Incarnate Word, but a win’s a win. Donald and Jason jump on quickly after the game to recap it on Episode 672.
Duke was led by a career night from Khaman Maluach, who was the star of the first half. Isaiah Evans was the pace car in the second half. But while ManMan had a great night and Evans had a great half, Duke struggled on offense. After the headlines, Donald and Jason get to the good and bad from this game. It was a game where Duke really struggled to put Incarnate Word away in the first half and let them hang before the defense took over in the second half to make it a bigger win. Still, they needed to play through yet another slow start and needed to have more intensity and mental sharpness throughout the game.
After the break, we discuss Maalik Murphy’s decision to enter the transfer portal. He will not play for Duke in the bowl game against Ole Miss, and we discuss his season at Duke. We wish him the best as he moves on and we talk about the state of the portal in college football. Despite many fans being angry at him leaving and the transfer portal at large, Duke has so far had it pretty easy despite the high profile departure. And, help could be on the way.

Only about 48 hours after dispatching the Louisville Cardinals, the Incarnate Word Cardinals come to Cameron. The Duke Basketball Roundup brings you all you need to know about this game, from the list of teams that Incarnate Word has played to their lineup of deadeye sharpshooters from the perimeter. Jason and Donald dive into the advanced metrics in an effort to explain how this team could be so good at shooting 3s and so bad at defending them.
After the break, the guys turn to the football -- both the College Football Playoff and the way the dominoes fell to end up with Duke playing an SEC power in Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl. This is a big chance for Duke to show it belongs alongside a team that was in line for a playoff bid pretty much all season.

Duke got off to another slow start, but righted the ship and took care of business against Louisville to notch an important road win in their ACC opener. On the latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup, Jason and Donald chat about the phenomenal play of the "old dudes" Tyrese Proctor, Sion James, and especially Maliq Brown. They took over when the game was on the line after Cooper Flagg picked up his 4th foul with about 11 minutes left. Those guys -- with help from Kon Ktripple and Mason Gillis, turned a 5 point deficit into an 8 point lead, allowing Duke to cruise home with a win. The podcast gang may be frustrated by yet another game where the Devils got off to a terribly cold start, but have no complaints about the second half and the adjustments Duke made in the contest.
After the break, the guys chat a bit about the opening of ACC play for the rest of the league. A few teams pulled off all-important road wins as the ACC already seems to be separating into tiers.

While Duke fans may be basking in the afterglow of that impressive win over Auburn, ACC season is ready to start. Duke takes on the Louisville Cardinals on Sunday and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here with a rundown of what to expect from that contest. The Cards have a 100% new roster, no one is back from the past two years where Louisville occupied the ACC cellar. And the new players and new coach Pat Kelsey are doing much better than the past couple years. But, Louisville still seems to be a solid step behind the top of the ACC. What's more, they have been really hit by injuries the past few weeks and will be quite short-handed against Duke. Have a listen as Jason and Donald take a deep dive into Duke's first ACC game.

It will forever be known as the Isaiah Evans game. With the Auburn Tigers laying a hurting on Duke early in Cameron, a little used freshman suddenly became the best player on the floor. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a full breakdown of the matchup between the best offense and the best defense in the land as Duke beats Auburn 84 - 78. And though the first half belonged to Evans, the second half was the Cooper Flagg show as Duke held the Tigers at arm's length throughout. Jason and Donald have plenty to say about this impressive win, including praise for Maliq Brown and Sion James on D and a special play of the game nod to Tyrese Proctor for an amazing buzzer beater. This is the kind of win that will look very, very good when the NCAA selection committee is doing their thing in March.

The Duke Blue Devils have a huge game coming up tomorrow night in Cameron against the Auburn Tigers. Donald and Jason are here to preview the game on Episode 669.
Duke has a top 2 non-conference team coming to Cameron for the first time since 1992, and Auburn is an incredibly strong team. They just won the Maui Invitational and they’re #2 in the AP and Coaches polls. They’re #1 in KenPom as well, led by their prolific offense that can be lethal. We go through who they’ve beaten and then hit the analytics to show where they’re truly strong on both sides of the basketball. We then discuss the players, led by Johni Broome, a leading National Player of the Year candidate. He’s strong, and his teammates are as well. We then discuss some of the matchups to watch for tomorrow night.
After the break, we discuss the rest of the ACC-SEC Challenge, with Donald and Jason each picking a couple of games to focus on. The ACC has their work cut out for them against the best conference in the country, but it’s the details that will be the difference for the conference. We end with discussion on the first NET rankings and how the ACC is really struggling at the bottom.

If you want to understand how Jon Scheyer thinks about basketball, there are few reporters out there better to speak to than Jordan Brenner. Brenner writes for the Athletic and hosts a podcast about finding the underdogs and upsets in college and professional sports. But, back when he was a writer for ESPN: The Magazine, he wrote numerous profiles on Jon Scheyer and Duke basketball. Brenner joined the DBR Podcast crew for a conversation about how the first month of the season has gone for Duke and where the team goes from here. He addresses the strengths and weaknesses he has seen so far and reveals why he thinks this Duke team is the best yet in Scheyer's young career at the helm.

If Seattle is sleepless, it is because the Duke defense gave them nightmares. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down the Blue Devils 70-48 win over a pretty decent RedHawk club. There is plenty of praise for the defensive energy on display, especially the effort put forth by Maliq Brown. Jason and Donald also talk about the offense, which wasn't as sharp as it could be but showed some promising signs -- including an early appearance by "The Slim Reaper," Isaiah Evans. Are the positives we saw against Seattle something that will carry over to this week's big game against Auburn?
After the break the podcast gang also dives into the wild ending of the Duke-Wake football game and all the craziness across the college football landscape over the weekend. They have some thoughts on overtimes and flag planting.

The Duke Blue Devils are back in action on Friday night against the Seattle Redhawks, and we preview that contest on DBR Bites Episode 71.
Duke looks to regroup after the loss to Kansas in Las Vegas, and they close out the week against a Seattle team that is stronger than their 2-4 record would indicate. Jason and Donald preview what to expect from Seattle, from their analytics to their players. They then break down some of the matchups to watch for when the two teams hit the floor on Friday night.
After the break, Daniel Jones was released by the New York Giants, but has found a new home with the Minnesota Vikings. We briefly discuss the hopes for Danny Dimes with the Vikings and the hopes he can carve out a new path in his NFL career.

Ugh, we hate these episodes. The Duke Blue Devils dropped a close game to the Kansas Jayhawks in Las Vegas, and on the Devil’s Episode, we recap the second loss of the year.
Donald was in Vegas at the game, so he begins with a recap of the meet up he had with DBR Podcast listeners before the game! It’s always great to meet our listeners, and we’ll do it again soon. Donald and Jason then get to the game, with headlines, general thoughts, and discussing some of the good things that did happen.
They then get to the bad from this game, and it was a game of details. There are so many chances that Duke had to take control of this game at certain moments, but they weren’t able to do so. We also address the question of whether it was Kansas outcoaching Duke down the stretch. We close things out with our Play of the Game.

Fresh off that big win at Arizona, Duke faces another major test as the Blue Devils square off against Kansas in Las Vegas. One of the most eagerly anticipated games of "Feast Week" will feature Duke's young stars against a Jayhawk team full of super experienced veterans who know how college basketball is played. It all starts with the man in the middle, Hunter Dickinson, who is probably the best offensive post player in the country. But, as the DBR Podcast gang explains, Kansas has plenty of other weapons on the roster. There is a reason this Kansas club has been ranked #1 in the land since the pre-season. Listen in as Jason and Donald break it all down -- and if you are planning to be in Vegas for the big game, Donald wants to meet you. Listen in (around the 38 minute mark) to hear where Donald is planning his Vegas meet-up with DBR Podcast fans in the hours before the game tips off.
Jason and Donald also dive into the Saturday night thriller in Wally Wade as Duke holds off Virginia Tech to win 31-28. It was win #8 on the season for Manny Diaz's crew and featured a huge senior day performance by Eli Pancol as well as Maalik Murphy setting the Duke record for TD passes in a season.

The Duke Blue Devils got the huge road win last night against the Arizona Wildcats, and we recap everything on Episode 664.
Duke went to Tucson to take on Arizona, and thankfully the defense and fight were present the entire night. Donald and Jason start with the headlines and then talk about everything that Duke did to win this game at McKale Memorial. It was a dogfight of a game, and Duke showed that they can withstand it and do what’s necessary to win. It was a frustrating game offensively for large stretches of the night, but the defense led the way and especially the rebounding. Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Sion James, and Tyrese Proctor are all standouts for very different reasons.
After the break, we discuss the things that needed to be better, from free throws to missed layups. It wasn’t a perfect game and it was frustrating game. But, the fight got us across the finish line. We then discuss our play of the game as well as our players of the week.
Next up: the Kansas Jayhawks in Las Vegas. Donald will be there! All listeners are invited to come meet up with him at Tom’s Watch Bar inside New York/New York Casino at 3pm PT on Tuesday to say hi and talk some Duke Basketball ahead of the big game.

We know, we know... the season is still very young but it is never too early to look at the rest of the ACC and try to see some patterns. So, the Duke Basketball Roundup gang did a deep dive into all the ACC results so far this season and came up with a few teams that have been better than expected and several who seems worse. On the good side we get Pitt, Notre Dame, and Stanford (thanks to the stellar play thus far of none other than Jaylen Blakes). On the bad side, there's Wake Forest, Syracuse, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. Jason and Donald break down what each of these clubs has done so far this season to land then on the naughty or nice list... and the guys point out that all of this really matters to Duke when it comes time to prove that Duke's regular season record was achieved against reasonable competition.
