  • Green & Red Podcast is introducing a new series . . . The Battle of Seattle at 25! On November 30th 1999, protestors shut down the WTO meeting in Seattle and put the world on notice that the forces of globalization--the international ruling class of bankers, industrialists, politicians and others--would be met with force as they reshaped the world economy and caused more precarity and hardship. In this, our pilot episode, Bob offers a brief backgrounder on the way the global economy was transformed from World War II to the present, including discussions of the Bretton Woods System (pictured on the graphic), which created the IMF and World Bank, other trade agreements, financial issues like the "gold crisis" and the Nixon Shocks, and of course the development and meaning of NAFTA and the WTO.--------------------------------------Outro- "Call It Democracy" by Bruce CockburnLinks// + WTO Shutdown Organizers History Project (https://www.shutdownwto20.org/)Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com)+NEW: Follow us on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social)Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. • In our latest, Bob talks with Payday Report founder and senior labor reporter Mike Elk about the recent indictment of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

In addition to being a crack labor reporter, Mike Elk has spent a good deal of time in Brazil over the past couple years and we’ve had several conversations about Lula’s victory in 2022 and the role of Brazilian authorities to go after Jair Bolsonaro who’s now been indicted for forging a COVID passport, embezzlement for selling Rolex watches gifted by Saudi Arabians at a mall in Pennsylvania, and now for his role, along w/ 36 of his political cronies, in a plot to kill his successor, Lula. And of course we made the comparison between the way the Brazilians acted immediately to hold Bolsonaro legally liable and Merick Garland was so weak, slow, and feckless in dealing w/ Trump.

Bio//Mike (@mikeelk) is the founder of, and a reporter for, Payday Report.

  • 61 years ago this weekend, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. There's a school of conspiracy that says he was killed because he was a secret peacenik trying to end the Cold War and the war in Vietnam.

We disagree. JFK was a Cold War hawk through and through. Historic episodes like the Cuban Missle Crisis tell us the true story.

    --------------------------------

    From the original episode:

60 years ago this month, in October 1962, Americans anxiously heard news for almost two weeks straight about the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, less than 100 miles away from the U.S. Nuclear War was possible, to some imminent.

In this episode we offer a brief history of the Cuban Missile Crisis and, more importantly, a remembrance and reconsideration of the events of October and JFK actions throughout the crisis.

JFK has been praised for his firm resolve, courage, and strength in handling the crisis but the reality is that he was provocative and almost caused a war against Russia. In this episode we’ll start by giving a background on JFK’s aggression toward Cuba, then we’ll offer a brief narrative of the crisis, and finally we’ll discuss how Kennedy continued his subversion against Castro’s government after theMissile Crisis.

JFK was not heroic. His recklessness and need for credibility almost caused a nuclear exchange. The media doesn’t tell you this story. Green and Red does .

  • The United Nations Climate talks, also know as COP29, is wrapping in Baku Azerbaijan this week. In a disturbing trend over the past few years, the largest delegation at COP29 is the fossil fuel lobbyist delegation. At the same time the UN continues to have the talks in petrostates like Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates (COP28 in 2023) and limit civil society ability to message and take action. In our latest, Scott talks with Allie Rosenbluth (@allieeerose.bsky.social) with Oil Change International to discuss COP29, the fossil fuel delegation, social movements and resistance to genocide in Palestine at the climate talks. Bio//Allie (she/they) is the U.S. Program Co-Manager at Oil Change International, where she focuses on supporting grassroots organizing and strategic campaigns aimed at phasing out fossil fuels. Prior to joining Oil Change International, Allie spent seven years at Rogue Climate. There, she worked to stop the Jordan Cove LNG export terminal and pipeline, developed local and statewide energy justice campaigns, trained youth organizers, and coordinated mutual aid in response to the devastating Almeda Fire in Southern Oregon. She serves on the Breach Collective Board, co-founded the Rogue Action Center, and was a SustainUS Youth Delegate to COP24. In 2019, Allie received the Community Sentinel Award for Environmental Stewardship for her work stopping fossil fuel projects. • The 2024 election was referred to many as the "gender election." We saw breathless stories by the media about Gen Z men, black men, Latino men and others trending towards Donald Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris. Trump's strategy of messaging to men proved effective and he won the election. This also runs parallel to a crisis among men (particularly working class men) around stagnant wages, healthcare, declining qualities of life, isolation and alienation. In our first post-election episode, we talk with journalist Ryan Zickgraf about Trump's appeal to men and what the left can do about it. • In a premortem from 2022, that is now a postmortem after yesterday's election, we are reposting our interview with Noam Chomsky from 2022 on the rightward shift of the Democrats.

    A very interview for Nov. 6, 2024.

    ---------------------------

    From the 2022 episode:

Republicans go to war . . . Democrats go to brunch! The past 50 years have seen a dramatic shift to the far-right in American politics. On the heels of the 1972 McGovern debacle, the Democrats all but abandoned their New Deal heritage and moved swiftly to a stronger pro-business position and embraced Neo-Liberalism. They abandoned class politics and giving priority to workers and the poor and instead have embraced ID politics and wokeness. As the Republicans stole elections and Supreme Court seats, gerrymandered congressional districts, packed the courts, and ran scorched-earth campaigns at every level, the Democrats have offered a timid resistance at best.In this fantastic interview, Noam Chomsky gives us a history and analysis of the evolution of the Democrats from the party of FDR to a party that's Republican-Lite. We discussed the Carter campaign, the Trilateral Commission, the DLC and the Clintons, Obama, Democratic hawkishness, and other factors in the Democratic retreat from progressive ideas, all while the GOP waged an open and ruthless war on workers, non-whites, women, and others.Don't miss this important interview with the world's greatest living intellectual. Professor Chomsky is an American linguist, political philosopher, social critic and political activist. He is Institute Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and Laureate Professor of Linguistics and Haury Chair in the Program in Environment and Social Justice at the University of Arizona. At 93, he is still active; writing and giving interviews to media all over the world. He is the author of scores of books, including American Power and the New Mandarins, Towards a New Cold War, Necessary Illusions, Hegemony or Survival, Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy and Requiem for the American Dream. His most recent book is “The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power,” co-authored with Vijay Prashad.

  • "Poverty is a carcinogen"--Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, a longtime emergency room physician and med school professor, talked with us about his essential book *Inequality is Killing Us All." Bezruchka goes into depth on the way that economic inequality determines our access to healthcare. The U.S. spends more money on healthcare than any other country, but our outcomes, and especially our life spans, are not good. Children in America get less medical attention, poor people don't have access to essential services, and we're daily pummeled by the stresses of being poor and having to pay bills, go to work, pay rent, and be prepared if a medical emergency arises. This is a vital contribution to any national debate on health care, and Bezruchka is a passionate advocate for a more humane and democratic healthcare system.Bio//Stephen Bezruchka is on the faculty ofthe School of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle, and author of "Inequality Kills Us All: COVID-19's Health Lessons for the World."----------------------------------Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by MoodyLinks//+ Dr Bezruchka's website: https://stephenbezruchka.com/ Follow Green and Red//+G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast+Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/+ Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM)Support the Green and Red Podcast//+Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast+Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandROur Networks//+We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/+We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork+Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/)This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. • In the third installment of our Arts and Culture series, we talked about the life and politics of the late music legend Kris Kristofferson. We discussed his early life, his military service, his trajectory into the Nashville song writing scene, his music, his acting career and, of course, his politics. From his anti-war views on the American empire to his support of Mumia Abu Jamal and Leonard Peltier to his outspoken support of the Sandinistas and Palestinians. Kris Kristofferson was a legend who walked his talk. We will miss him, but never forget him. ------------------Music//+Intro- "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Kris Kristofferson+Interlude- "Sandinista" by Kris Kristofferson+Outro- "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down" by Kris KristoffersonFollow Green and Red//+G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast+Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/+ Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM)Support the Green and Red Podcast//+Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast+Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandROur Networks//+We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/+We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork+Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/)This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. • Green and Red is starting a new series that talks about how art and culture develop and raise political consciousness. We'll be putting out episodes that talk about the politics of our favorite TV series, film, books, music and whatever else we come up.In our first episode of this new feature, we talk about the award winning television series "Mad Men." We talk about the anti-hero Don Draper and the rising feminism of Peggy Olson. We discuss it's reflections on the political economy, Edward Bernays and the history of the advertising industry, the gender politics of the 1960s, the military industrial complex, the ultimate co-optation of the spirit of the 60s in the shows series finale and much much more. Take a break from the news and our collapsing world and dive into Green and Red's Arts and Culture Series. -----------------------------------------Intro and Outro- "A Beautiful Mine" by RJD2Follow Green and Red//+G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast+Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/

  • CAT 4 Hurricane Helene hit the southeast U.S. causing billions in destruction and at least 230 deaths. Western North Carolina was hit particularly hard, despite being called a "haven" from climate disaster. Mutual aid groups across the region sprung into action to provide immediate aid and relief. In our latest, Scott talks with Matt, an organizer working with Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR). ROAR has been providing mutual aid in rural counties in western North Carolina. They discuss the situation on the ground, mutual aid response, "state" response and the possibility of disaster capitalism in the region.Matt is a long time organizer, western North Carolina resident and works with Rural Organizing and Resilience. -----------------------------outro- "Green and Red Blues" by MoodyLinks//+ Rural Organizing and Resilience: https://ruralorganizing.wordpress.com/+ Hurricane Helene Relief (https://bit.ly/47U8hx7)Follow Green and Red//+G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast+Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/+ Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/knC2A4FW)Support the Green and Red Podcast//+Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast+Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandROur Networks//+We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/+We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork+Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/)This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production.
