    Daniele Visioni obtained his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics from the University of L’Aquila, in Italy, in 2018. He moved to Cornell in the same year, where he started as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In 2022, he continued on as a Research Associate in the same department, and also became a Research Scientist I at the National Center for Atmospheric Science (NCAR). He joined EAS in the fall of 2023 as Assistant Professor, and retains a courtesy appointment as Affiliate Scientist at NCAR in the Atmospheric Chemistry, Observation and Modeling (ACOM) lab. He’s the co-chair of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP), and has been a coauthor of the Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2022.

    Michael Vandenbergh is an award-winning teacher and scholar whose research focuses on working with interdisciplinary teams to explore environmental governance, environmental behavior and climate change. His research has developed the concept of private environmental governance and explored how private governance initiatives can address polarization and other barriers to climate change mitigation. His interdisciplinary work with Vanderbilt’s Climate Change Research Network focuses on the reduction of carbon emissions from the household sector, and he is one of the top 25 law professors in the US based on peer-reviewed literature citations. His book with physicist Jonathan Gilligan, Beyond Politics: The Private Governance Response to Climate Change (Cambridge University Press, 2017) was favorably reviewed in Science,Nature Climate Change and Legal Planet; won the 2018 Chancellor’s Award for Research; and was named by the Environmental Forum as one of the most important environmental policy books of the last 50 years. His article “Beyond Gridlock,” also co-authored with Gilligan, won the 2015 Morrison Prize for North America’s best sustainability article. His other writings have appeared in PNAS, Nature Climate Change and the Columbia,Cornell, Michigan and NYU Law Reviews. Before joining Vanderbilt’s law faculty, Professor Vandenbergh was a partner at Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C. He served as chief of staff of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1993 to 1995. He began his career as a law clerk for Judge Edward R. Becker of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. A recipient of teaching awards at Vanderbilt and at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Vandenbergh teaches courses in environmental law, climate change justice and property. He has been a visiting professor at the Wharton School’s Department of Legal Studies and Business Ethics and at the University of Chicago and Harvard Law Schools. He is a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers and a member of the Board on Environmental Change and Society of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

    Dr. Nancy Knowlton is the former Sant Chair for Marine Science at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and a scientific leader of the Census of Marine Life. She wrote the book, Citizens of the Sea, to celebrate the ten years of the Census. She founded the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, San Diego. Knowlton has devoted her life to studying, celebrating, and striving to protect the multitude of life-forms that call the sea home. She lives with her family in Maine.

    Emily is the Climate and Ocean strategy lead within TNC’s Global Tackle Climate Change team. She leads the global effort to mainstream the values of ocean and coastal ecosystems to reduce climate risks through policy, science, partnerships and supports implementation in over 15 countries. This involves a broad portfolio including projects on blue carbon markets, incorporating the ocean into international policy agreements, community-based conservation and building out the global science and awareness of the role of the ocean for biodiversity and people. Emily is also the TNC representative for The Global Mangrove Alliance, Global Mangrove Watch, International Partnership for Blue Carbon, scientific member of the Blue Carbon Initiative and serves as an ocean focal lead on the UNFCCC’s Nairobi Work Program on Ocean and Adaptation.

    Emily holds a graduate degree in Biodiversity, Evolution and Conservation from University College London, with a focus on valuation methods of ecosystem services, and during her tenure she worked directly with the Zoological Society of London. She also holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in International Policy and Environmental Science. Her previous work experience includes the Global Ocean Commission, Pew Charitable Trusts and Rare.

    Dr. Bill Moomaw was also founding director of the Tufts Institute of the Environment, Tufts Climate Initiative, and co-founder of the Global Development and Environment Institute.

    His research interests include increasing the role of forests and wetlands to achieve climate goals, energy technology and policies that address climate change, water and climate change, economics and geochemistry of the nitrogen cycle, sustainable development, and negotiation strategies for environmental agreements.

    Dr. Moomaw has been a lead author of five major Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. As a Science Fellow, he worked in the U.S. Senate on energy and forestry legislation and on legislation that eliminated American use of CFCs in spray cans to protect the ozone layer. He was the first director of the climate program at the World Resources Institute in 1988 where he met board member, George Woodwell. He has been elected an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.

    He is the past chair of the Woodwell Climate board, and currently serves on the boards of The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Center for Ecological Technologies, and the Consensus Building Institute. He graduated from Williams College and holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from MIT.

    Dennis Liu, PhD, is Vice President for Education of the E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and the Half Earth Project. Dr. Liu is an internationally recognized expert in science education. Dr. Liu directed the production of educational media at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and before that with Video Discovery and Microsoft. He’s worked with scientists, education specialists, graphic designers, animators, and filmmakers to produce an array of educational products that have had a lasting impact on science education. Dr. Liu has managed cross-disciplinary teams devoted to assessing and assuring the educational impact of media products, including professional development and community building. He’s been an executive producer and editorial advisor on over a dozen film projects for theater, broadcast television, large screen, and digital science programs aimed at educational audiences and the general public.

    Dennis studied zoology at the University of Wisconsin, earned a PhD in Biology from the University of Oregon, and then conducted research and taught in the Department of Genetics at the University of Washington. He has a passion for explaining diverse science to diverse audiences, and has advised on numerous museum exhibits and media projects. He wrote a longtime feature for the journal Life Sciences Education.

    Merritt is a PhD candidate at Arizona State University, where she conducts research with the Center for Negative Emissions and Klaus Lackner on direct air capture of carbon (DAC). Previously, Merritt worked at Google for 5 years in operations, and has degrees from the University of Michigan and Columbia University. She is originally from Pittsburgh, PA.

    Kate O'Neill is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She has written three books, Waste Trading Among Rich Nations: Building a New Theory of Environmental Regulation (MIT Press, 2000) The Environment and International Relations (Cambridge University Press 2009, 2nd edition 2017), and Waste (Polity Press 2019).

    Her book, Waste, was published by Polity Press in Summer 2019. This book is about waste as a globalized resource, though one that comes with magnified risks and governance challenges. It includes cases on China and the global plastic scrap trade, waste work and labor in the global economy, the global political economy of electronic wastes and food waste, and the global circular economy. It was featured on National Public Radio's Fresh Air on September 12, 2019. She has also been interviewed on other local, national, international media outlets, including NPR’s Here and Now and Marketplace, The Economist, and Al Jazeera International.

    Sass Brown is the Founding Dean of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation. Prior to joining DIDI, Sass was the Interim Dean for the Fashion Institute of Technology’s School of Art and Design in New York. She is a graduate of FIT’s Global Fashion Management Masters program, holds her Bachelors degree in Fashion Design from Ravensbourne College of Art and Design in the UK, and is currently undertaking her PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University, also in the UK.

    As a fashion designer with a background in sustainable development, Brown is an advisor for Sustainia100, the annual Danish sustainable solutions guide that honours developments in sustainability across a multitude of industries. She was also an Associate Design Researcher on the MISTRA Future Fashion educational research consortium that advises on the integration of sustainability into mainstream fashion.

    As a researcher, writer and educator, Brown’s area of expertise is ethical fashion in all its forms from slow design and heritage craft skills to recycling, reuse and alternative business models. She has published papers and spoken around the world on the topic of sustainable fashion, she has served as a sustainable design advisor to women’s cooperatives, educational institutions, governmental agencies, NGO’s and small and medium sized enterprises around the world. Her publications include the books Eco Fashion and ReFashioned for British publishers Laurence King, are also published in Italian as well as Spanish.
