Our guests today are Sophie van Mierlo and Emma Dodd. They are both doing their PhD’s at the Kapteyn Institute in Groningen. Sophie's research focuses on galaxy growth in the early Universe and Emma focuses in her research on the formation of the Milky Way. The Institute is named after J.C. Kapteyn, the first professor of Astronomy and Theoretical Mechanics at the University of Groningen. June 18th 2022 marked the 100th anniversary of his death.

Our episode today is about the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for researchers and scholars. We focus on initiatives and actions within the Dutch and Groningen academic community and what can be done to help refugees and people at risk. Wim and Tina interview Marie-Jose van Tol, professor of Mood and Cognition. As chair of De Jonge Akademie of the KNAW, she is very involved in coordinating activities and initiatives for Ukrainian researchers and scholars. Our second guest is Hedderik van Rijn, professor at our Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. He is using his SlimStampen adaptive learning tool to help refugees learn the language of the country they’re currently staying in.

Tina en Arjen spreken in deze thema-aflevering met Marian Joëls (decaan Faculteit Medische Wetenschappen), Janka Stoker (hoogleraar Leiderschap en Organisatieverandering) en Anne-Men Huijzer (PhD student Applied Mathematics) over wat Aletta Jacobs heeft betekend voor de positie van vrouwen in de wetenschap en vrouwen in het algemeen en hoe deze situatie nu in Nederland is.
