Rohan and Kirk are back to spill the beans on their blind espresso machine tasting with none other than the queen of food critique, Dani Valent.

With Producer Liam out of the picture, Sam steps in behind the desk for this one—fingers crossed nothing goes haywire!
Rohan’s also cooking up plans for a Broadsheet-style review series, which could be the start of something really cool. And of course, it wouldn’t be Coffee Break without a bit of drama:

Plus, Kirk and Liam take a closer look at co-fermentation—how it enhances flavour, its impact on coffee competitions, and whether we're moving towards artificially flavoured beans.

Kirk also updates us on ‘Project Zero Coffee’ and explains why he’s changed his approach to operations.

  • Hello! This morning we are joined by the Water Wizard, Simon Gautherin.

Did you know that water minerals can drastically change the flavour of coffee? Well Simon does. Simon is the mastermind behind APAX LAB’s water mineral concentrates. After 6 years of research, he describes water minerals as the ‘seasoning’ of coffee; just a few drops adds depth and flavour to any brew.

On today’s show we discuss water composition - how playing with mineral ratios can bring brightness, creaminess or floral notes to any drink. Plus, Kirk and Simon go head to head in a conversation about the future of milk based coffee, and we geek out over Simon's most valuable asset (a first edition Charizard).

In coffee news: Sabrina Carpenter releases espresso ice cream following her hit song ‘Espresso’, and AeroPress unveil their new portable Coffee Maker - The Aeropress Go Plus.

If you're new here (greetings), our show dives into some of the best coffee conversations on the internet, but we will always remind ourselves at the end of the day; It's Just Coffee!

Big thankyou to Simon for joining the show. Check out APAX LAB’s mineral concentrates here and find Simon on Instagram @simon_gautherin.

  • Hiya! Join us this morning as we chat with legendary Commonfolk Co-founder, Sam Keck.

Commonfolk Coffee is a roasting and brewing company with locations in Frankston, Mornington and South Yarra. More than just a cafe, Commonfolk have created ‘The Cup That Counts’ initiative, purchasing a coffee farm in the Ugandan highlands to ensure all their coffee is ethically sourced.

Sam discusses the importance of partnership with coffee producers, as well as the risks of deregulated trade. Since 2013, Commonfolk have supported thousands of farmers in Uganda, providing training for locals and nurturing sustainable coffee practices. Sam’s most recent project, documentary ‘Every Cup Counts’ follows the relationship between Commonfolk and the farmers of Mt Elgon, Uganda.

In coffee news: Robots are coming for the jobs of baristas and bar staff via the botrista, and Nestle develops a higher yielding coffee plant. Plus, Sam has a gripe (or grape) with natural wine drinkers, and Kirk contemplates the throughline between baristas and bouldering.

If you're new here (welcome), our show dives into some of the best coffee conversations on the internet, but we will always remind ourselves at the end of the day; It's Just Coffee!

It was a pleasure to have Sam on the show. ‘Every Cup Counts’ is premiering this week with screenings in Victoria and NSW. Get tickets at https://www.thecupthatcounts.org/every-cup-counts-documentary and check out Commonfolk Coffee on Instagram at @commonfolkcoffee.

Join Kirk and Liam for an insightful conversation about their unique position in the coffee industry.

As we experience a cost of living crisis, food and beverages have become the new luxury. Consumer spending has fallen, but many people still seem to find a little leftover for cash for their daily coffee - why? Community, connection, rituals.

Kirk and Liam discuss the importance of spreading the wealth amongst the coffee industry, as well as spreading the knowledge! Wanting to enter the industry but not sure where to start? We are hoping to be a resource for the coffee community. Send us any questions or topics you want us to speak about on the pod. Get in touch at [email protected]

This week: Independent coffee shops are facing an uncertain future. Kirk - with his economics degree in hand (brag) - discusses the risk of coffee chains monopolising the industry. .

But first, Rohan dunks on fantasy trilogies, explains why he wants to drink straight from the Yarra River, and debates whether he could cop an uppercut from Mike Tyson.

Plus, we answer your burning questions; Should you be combining alternative milks with dairy, and what is the proper way to make hot chocolate?
