The Ouimet Fund’s 19th annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception was held at Wellesley Country Club on Wednesday, August 4th. It was wonderful to bring the Ouimet community together and promote our endowed scholarship program to a room full of faces that hadn’t been able to gather in well over a year! With a full group of Scholars, Alumni, and donors in attendance, this event enabled Scholars to meet directly with the donors who have helped them afford the exorbitant cost of college tuition.
Prior to the start of the Ouimet speaking program, representatives from Wellesley Country Club held a small program honoring Frank Cartaglia, the longtime Director of Outside Operations at the Club. The award, called the Cartaglia-Lowery Caddies for Life award, is a special annual honor for a caddie who goes above and beyond, and the inaugural winner was Ouimet Scholar Corey O’Neill. Wellesley’s Ouimet Chair representatives Ray Hamel and Sean Rush organized the ceremony and highlighted Mr. Cartaglia and Mr. O’Neill’s outstanding service to the Club.
During the Ouimet speaking program, the crowd heard from a panel of Ouimet Alumni in a roundtable format. Moderated by John Dolan ’01, panel guests Rick Spillane ’72, Grant Kelly ’05, and Carli Citrano ’19 discussed everything from their experiences working in golf to how the Ouimet Fund has impacted them, with each Alumnus sharing stories and offering advice to current Scholars.
Thank you to everyone for attending the event and making it such a special evening. We were excited to be back in person and look forward to more incredible upcoming events. We also want to thank all the new faces in attendance and hope to see them in the future!
Frankie Cartaglia has been a country club starter and caddie master for over a quarter century. He embodies the true spirit of golf. He is kind, attentive, patent and giving. He is truly a national treasure.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Frankie Cartaglia discuss Frankie's life and his commitment to golf and his "people". Frankie is a true American and his story is exceptional and well worth listening to...... that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend!

The Northern Irishman, who hails from Whitehead Golf Club in County Antrim, says he is “loving life” in the hot seat of the Head Coach role and has set his sights on leading the team to the National Finals, just as he did as a player during each of his final three seasons.
Winsby and his then Warrior team-mates advanced to the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship in three consecutive years from 2014 – 16, finishing in tenth place during his Junior year, their best placing in the program’s history.
“I loved being part of that team and we were really close as a group. Most of us were room-mates and we all pushed each other to get better. The bond between us was really strong and we played together a lot. I played a lot of football as a youngster so to get back to being part of a team within an individual sport was something I really enjoyed.”
As a Senior in 2015-16, he was named an NAIA All-American but opted not to pursue a career in the professional game. After a spell caddying, he returned to Webber as a Junior Network Administrator in the IT department, while undertaking an MBA in Sports Management, before eventually being offered the coaching position last summer.
So, what’s his coaching philosophy?
“I really push my players to work on their short games and it’s such an important aspect of the game. I’m not one to stand on the range for hours with them but devoting time to the short game worked for me, 100%. I also encourage them to get out on the course and play to keep them competitive. I’ll give them targets with a scorecard in hand and give them rewards if they achieve those targets. That was something my own coach Wills Murray (an apprentice of Sean Foley) drummed into us – go and play! They know they need to work hard academically too and with me knowing many of the professors well, that helps with the balance that the players need to achieve.”
When he left Northern Ireland in 2012, he may not have set out to pursue life as a coach but Stuart Winsby now has ambitions to go places with a career he is clearly enjoying, firstly with his beloved Webber Warriors team, and perhaps at a higher level in the future with an NCAA D1 team.
“That would be the long-term goal. I’ve got to establish my name as a coach here and reaching the National Finals on a consistent basis with Webber would be a huge accomplishment.”
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Stuart Winsby discuss Stuart's journey as a golfer coming from Ireland to America. Stuart is a fascinating and likable guy with lots of tidbits to share that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! This episode is well worth watching and we hope you enjoy the show!

Just two weeks after the 9/11 attack Jack represented the PGA of America at a “Tribute to America” on September 25th at the Valerio Open in San Antonio, Texas. At that tribute the Ryder Cup players committed $520 thousand and the PGA joined with an additional $500 thousand making a total 1.2 million dollars donation to the United Way.
Jack was honored by the Philadelphia Golf Association with the organization’s highest award, the “Arnold Palmer Lifetime Service Award” in 2010. Jack was inducted into the Philadelphia PGA Section Hall of Fame in 2000, the PGA of American Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Inaugural Hall of Fame at Deptford High School, in New Jersey in 2007. In 2015 he was honored as a PGA Legend at the PGA Annual Meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Kevin Walsh and Jack Connelly share a Philly and Purdue University connection. In this episode, we meet Jack Connelly as he regales us with great stories of his fascinating career. There are some great moments that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Nothing encapsulates the excitement of the postseason more than the furry-faced Phillie Phanatic.
He's one of the greatest mascots in sports, and it's all thanks to Dave Raymond, who started as a Phillies intern.
"They said, 'You want to come back?' 'I said, Yeah, what do you want me to do?' 'Go to New York and get fitted for a costume,'" said Raymond, reliving the moment he got tapped to be the now iconic mascot.
"I got measured and they gave me this design drawing. (They) told me to just go have fun!" added Raymond.
He says the organization gave him the freedom to be goofy and embrace all that is the core of being a Phillies fan.
Raymond was the first person to don the neon green tinted costume and wore it for 16 years. Raymond made three World Series appearances as the Phanatic and retired after the Phillies 1993 World Series run.
He says seeing the team and the beloved mascot possibly make it back to baseball's biggest stage is nothing short of nostalgia and pride.
"It's 45 years later and it's wonderful to see the Phanatic do the same type of unifier and do the same type of creating moments of joy for people, and that's so wonderful and powerful about sports," said Raymond.
He now has his own business called Raymond Entertainment and has designed other mascots like the Flyers' Gritty and GMA's mascot Ray.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Dave Raymond talk about Dave's amazing journey to becoming a "True Character." Dave is an amazing guy with great stories and his love of golf is also epic. His story is exceptional and well worth listening to...... that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend!

The Big Mike Story
- May 12th 2023
Big Mike made Big Mike famous, and now he's at Clovernook, with our Mike.
The Clovernook Open provides a first class tournament for rising professional golfers. This year we welcome professional participant, "Big Mike" Visacki, who recently found stardom in the golf world. Mike's journey is similar to many of our tournament players, but his emotional moment helped shine the spotlight on the trials and tribulations of professional golfers vying for status on the PGA Tour.
(Big Mike #1) Mike Wolfe is a PGA Tour Entertainment videographer. On a Sunday night in the Spring of 2021 he finished filming Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman win the Zurich Classic team event. First thing Monday morning he flew to Tampa Florida for the Valspar Championship. The first stop was that weeks Monday Qualifier, the last chance for hopeful professionals to gain entry into the Valspar Championship.
On the second playoff hole (Big Mike #2) Mike Visacki made a 20 foot birdie putt to gain entry into his first ever PGA Tour start. After making the putt and hugging his caddie the camera caught him holding back tears. That was just the prelude to the moment that captured everyone's hearts. Mike Wolfe caught up with Mike Visacki moments later outside the clubhouse, and with camera rolling, witnessed Big Mike Visacki call his father. On the phone and full of tears he shared the words "I made it" as his father congratulated him. The video quickly surpassed 12 million views and made Big Mike Visacki a name to remember.
Following his start in The Valspar Championship, Mike went on to get a sponsor's invite into another PGA Tour event, The Charles Schwab Challenge. Visacki not only touched fans, but also PGA Tour players like Justin Thomas who reached out to congratulate and show support for Mike. Later in 2021 Mike Visacki advanced through Korn Ferry Qualifying to achieve tour status for 2022.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Mike Visacki discuss Mike's professional career and some great experiences along the way. His story is exceptional and well worth listening to...... that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! This episode is well worth watching and we hope you enjoy the show!

In Dave Frantz's own words...My name is Dave Frantz, and I am a full-time Teaching Professional at Heritage Harbour Golf Club in Bradenton. I am a current High School Golf Coach and a member of the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and was voted "Coach of the Year" three times. I have four decades of golf teaching and coaching experience and I guarantee I can help you reach your goals!
I have been teaching golf classes, giving clinics and running camps for over 30 years. What sets me apart is that I am a teacher in every sense of the word! Most pros have spent more time in the pro shop than they have with their students. As a (retired) professional educator, (retired) golf coach, AND a teaching professional, I can help you see, feel, and think your way to better golf - and have fun while doing it!
I am hands-on, fun, and energetic. I use the Hudl Technique video analysis, Mevo Flightscope, a wide variety of training and instruction aids, and an experienced eye to identify problems and prescribe solutions.
I really enjoy talking to my students about their games, devising a plan that is convenient, affordable, and achievable- and having fun while "working" that plan. If it isn't fun, then I'm not doing my job! Helping a player see, feel, and execute shots they have not been able to consistently produce fuels my enthusiasm. That's something I've loved since my high school (playing) days!
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Dave Frantz discuss their Lakewood National connection and we learn about Dave's storied history of teaching AP Psychology and coaching the Lakewood Ranch Boys Golf Team. Dave is a fascinating and likable guy with lots of tidbits to share that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Golf is like life and if you play golf, you are my friend! Howdy Giles stands and smiles in front of the green at the prestigious Caves Valley Golf Club outside Baltimore, waiting for his picture to be taken. To his right, legendary golfer and now close friend, Arnold Palmer. To his left, former President George H.W. Bush. Taking the picture is the president’s personal photographer. Giles thinks to himself, “What an incredible day for a little ol’ guy from the University of Delaware.”
How did Dr. Howard Giles get here? The improbable true story of a devout fan becoming a super friend begins with a novice golfer and expert dentist’s obsession with one of golf’s greats.
Giles began golfing in 1962, the year he started dental school, and as he explains, “Arnold Palmer was the king of golf, and I picked out Arnie as an idol.” He says he acquired Arnold Palmer golf clubs and clothing and “was just a big fan” who dreamed of meeting and even golfing with Palmer some day.
The chance meeting between fan and icon took place in 1970, when a friend of Giles’, who was also acquainted with Palmer, introduced the two in Delaware during the World Putting Championship. However incredible it was to meet the man whom Giles calls “the John Wayne of golf,” he says, it was even more amazing when he got his first opportunity to play a round of golf with the living legend.
Giles says that when he got the call from Danny Bonar, Palmer’s insurance agent, who told him that he had arranged an outing of golf with Palmer at Palmer’s Latrobe Country Club, he “couldn’t sleep all week.” The call came on a Monday, and the game was arranged for Saturday. On the morning he was scheduled to play, Giles says that he woke up at 7 a.m. and dressed in his golf clothes. At 7:45, he says, “My wife goes, ‘Will you get back in bed? You’re not playing until 1,’ so I got back in bed and laid down so I wouldn’t wrinkle my clothes.”
Despite sleep deprivation and raw nerves, Giles says, he shot a respectable score that day, which he attributes to Palmer coming over to him on the 10th tee and telling him to “just relax and have fun.”
More than fulfilling both of his dreams of meeting and playing golf with Palmer, Giles eventually became his dentist, which resulted in many star referrals. Soon, he says, his office was crowded with the likes of Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey and Phillies World Series-winning manager Dallas Green, also a UD alumnus.
Giles and Palmer became increasingly close as the years went on, hanging out at each other’s houses and spending holidays and birthdays together.
When an acquaintance told Giles that the type of friendship he and Palmer developed would probably never again happen between the top athlete in a sport—Palmer, with his legion of admirers known as “Arnie’s Army,” was the original superstar of professional golf—and a mere fan, he wrote a book about the experience, The King and I: An Unlikely Journey from Fan to Friend.
When asked how Palmer reacted to the book, the author leans back and relays what Palmer said: “The book’s great, but they should have called it The King and Arnie.”

John Riley retired in 2016 after leading government relations for two global corporations. In 2017 he joined former Philadelphia Eagle Kevin Reilly as co-author of his book, Tackling Life and followed that success with his award winning book: Delaware Eyewitness: Behind the Scenes in the First State.
Active in golf for many years, Riley turned his attention to the story of one of the game's forgotten heroes, three time Ryder Cup team member, Ed "Porky" Oliver. How He Played the Game focuses on Oliver and the other pros who served their country during WWII and built the modern golf tour.
Riley is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where he captained the golf team. He is a past recipient of the annual award of the Delaware State Golf Association for contributions to the game of golf. John and his wife Sharon live in Wilmington. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
In this episode Kevin Walsh and John Riley discuss John's experiences and broad knowledge of the Game of Golf. The two have a spirited discussion that any golfer or even non-golfer would find fascinating. If you love golf, then you are a friend of mine!

ROBBIE DAVIS
Florida Southern Women’s Golf Coach, 1997-present
Robbie Davis took little time in joining the ranks of national championship coaches at FSC, guiding the Mocs to an NCAA title in 2000, just his third year at the helm. For good measure the Mocs ran off a total of three straight NCAA crowns under Davis, also winning in 2001 and 2002. He has also coached the Mocs to four NCAA national runner-up finishes and one third-place finish in his career, giving FSC a top- three finish in eight of his nine seasons. Davis has coached six individual national champions, five individual national runners-up and 24 All-Americans, including 16 first-teamers. A three-time GolfWeek national coach of the year in 2000, 2001 and 2002, Davis was similarly honored in 2002 by the NGCA. A 2004 Region Coach of the Year, he is a four-time SSC Coach of the Year.
A Lakeland native, Davis is a 1988 graduate of Lakeland High School, located less than a mile from Florida Southern College. He played collegiately at the University of Kentucky where he received his B.A. in Finance in 1993. While at Kentucky, Davis was a two-time Academic All-American as a junior and senior, and a three-time member of the SEC All-Academic Team. He twice won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Golf Championship. He still competes in amateur tournaments through the Florida State Golf Association and again qualified for the Florida State Amateur Championship in 2013. Davis won the event as a collegiate golfer in 1990, and added to his amateur win total in the summer of 2015 by finishing in first place at the 39th Annual Polk County Amateur Championships in Lakeland.
Before coming to Florida Southern in February of 1997, Davis served as assistant golf coach at the University of Kentucky for one year before playing three years professionally on the Tommy Armour, Gary Player, Moonlight and Hooters Tours. He’s also served as a golf assistant at Lone Palm Golf Club, the primary home course of the Moccasins.
Robbie and his wife Joy live in Lakeland and have three daughters: Perry, Lucy, and Susie.
In this episode, Kevin Walsh and Robbie Davis discuss Robbie's storied coaching career and his true love of the game of golf. Robbie is a fascinating guy and has lots of great stories to tell and this episode has some great moments that golfers and non-golfers alike would love. Peter Hal Oakley (born June 28, 1949) is an American professional golfer best known for winning the 2004 Senior British Open, one of the major championships in senior men's professional golf. He is the younger brother of golfer David Oakley.
Early life
Oakley was born in Panama City, Florida. He got started in the game at age 11 by his mother, who thought a nearby nine-hole course would be a great babysitter for him and his brother David.
Professional career
Oakley was a long-time club pro in the Philadelphia-Delaware area where he won numerous sectional titles including the Delaware State Open six times and the Shawnee Open six times. He played some on the Nationwide Tour in his forties to prepare himself for the Champions Tour.
The biggest win of his career was his first on the Champions Tour, and came in a major – The 2004 Senior British Open played at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Oakley sank a 10-foot par putt on the final hole to win by one stroke and avoid a playoff with Tom Kite and Eduardo Romero. The victory made him only the 10th open qualifier to win a Champions Tour event.
In 2008, he had his best season since 2004, when he finished fifth in the Russian Seniors Open en route to ending the year 29th in the 2008 European Senior Tour Order Of Merit.
Oakley has done some golf course design work. In 2001, he completed and opened (with partner Chris Adkins) a public course in Milton, Delaware, called The Rookery Golf Club.
Awards and honors
Oakley was awarded the Player of the Year for the Philadelphia Section of the PGA of America in 1980, 1984, 1999, and 2000.
Oakley was awarded 2004 European Seniors Tour Rookie of the Year.
