  • This week on the pod, I talk through my latest neurosurgery consult—because apparently nothing brings people together quite like a brain tumor. I share what it was like meeting with a highly recommended neurosurgeon here in Eugene. We talk about how she and her team gave me way more confidence in the process, what we learned about the tumor's location in the right frontal lobe, and the real talk about personality changes, impulse control, and my lifelong struggle with multitasking.

I also get into my history of concussions (shout out to my teenage basketball self for taking charges like an idiot), my tendency to blame myself for dumb luck health stuff, and the mental game of accepting this without getting stuck in ā€œwhat ifs.ā€

We talk about AFib plans, upcoming heart shock (aka cardioversion), the brain model at the clinic, why Eugene and Seoul are vastly different places, and how I'm adapting workouts to ā€œgrease the grooveā€ and keep moving without wrecking myself.

I also share about the huge outpouring of support I’ve been getting, the importance of community, and how I’m still writing jokes about all of it. If you're going through anything similar, reach out. Let’s keep the conversation real—and maybe even funny.

  • In episode 78, I review Sam Tallent’s ā€œRunning the Lightā€ā€”one chapter per day—as my own life spirals into a week of medical revelations. A hybrid book review and personal reflection, I weave the story of fictional burnout Billy Ray Schaeffer with my own diagnosis of a low-grade glioma, sharing green room memories, popcorn threesomes, and the deep, weird love of comedy, and the burning ball of light that is Sam Tallent. Featuring backstage tales, heartfelt tributes, and punchlines about brain tumors, this one’s a doozy.

  • Episode 77 – ā€œGreasing the Groove (with Frostner)ā€

Hey friends, it’s Rudy—and Frostner chiming in too. She starts with a purr. Mmm. This week I reflected on my early gym days, starting out in high school with workout buddies, chasing gains, reading Flex Magazine, and loving the world of bodybuilding. But I’m realizing how much that culture also fed into body dysmorphia and a mindset that wasn’t always healthy.

After my recent health scare at the Y, I’ve been shifting gears. I’m exploring Pavel’s ā€œgrease the grooveā€ method—short, frequent movements instead of pushing to exhaustion. It fits with how I work at the Y, constantly demonstrating and staying lightly active throughout the day.

I’ve started to value strength as something functional and shared, not just aesthetic. That shift has brought me more joy and fulfillment, especially when I help others connect with their bodies through movement.

I’m also feeling grateful: for the support from the Y community, for friends showing up, for getting to be around comics I admire, and for opportunities like MC’ing at Oregon Country Fair. If you’re going through something—physically or emotionally—please take care of yourself. You’re on my team. And I hope you know I’m on yours.

  • Hey, it’s Rudy. Episode 76 is short and not exactly sweet—I wanted to share something important that happened to me last week. While working out at the Y (where I also work), I fainted after a heavy set of incline bench press. One minute I was standing up from the bench, the next I was on a stretcher being wheeled out of the gym in front of coworkers and clients I care about.

Turns out, I have a mass on my brain. Apparently, it’s been there since at least 2020, though I had no idea. This comes after a year where I’ve already been managing a heart issue, so... yeah. Not exactly how I thought my summer would start.

I’m feeling a lot of things—confused, disappointed, weird. But mostly, I want to remind anyone listening to pay attention to your body.

I’ll be taking the week off work, skipping my planned cross-country road trip, and focusing on follow-ups with neurologists and cardiologists. I’m also grateful—for coworkers who laughed with me the next day (apparently I gave the ā€œhang looseā€ sign on the stretcher), for friends like Seth who picked me up from the ER, and for everyone who’s reached out.

This episode is just me being real, sitting in the middle of a big unknown. I watched a couple movies in the ER. I might go see Thunderbolts tonight. Because... why not?

Stay hydrated. Tell someone you love them. Take care of yourself—it helps everyone around you. Health is a community service. And if your body is whispering (or shouting), listen.

  • This past week felt like a full-on comedy festival in Eugene. I hosted a little Korean reunion with friends from all over—Canada, Baltimore, Korea—and we packed in seven shows across six days, including some with Kyle Kinane. It was beautiful, busy, and beyond fun. I got to see my hometown through their eyes, which reminded me how charming this place really is.

In this episode, I reflect on what it means to be a good host (and how hosting 40-something-year-old men feels a lot like a dime-store version of The Bachelor), the joy of connection, and how I managed to stay sober, present, and (somewhat) well-rested throughout it all. I’m also gearing up for my big cross-country road trip to Miami later this month, and starting to embrace the nerves that come with it.

I’m 75 episodes deep now—every week, no breaks—and I hope this one reminds you to celebrate whatever you’ve been showing up for lately.

  • This week, as Kyle pops by Eugene to perform at Olsen Run Comedy Club, we revisit Kyle's appearance on ep 50 of Jokes AND the Gym. We talk soft bones, strong cats, gym anxiety, and why sometimes "everything's fine and I'm sad."

Kyle opens up about the battle between winter blues and dumbbells, how pull-up bars became elaborate clothes hangers, and why he prefers slobs on the treadmill to beasts on the bench. We swap stories about cats that regulate your nervous system and the weird joy of just dangling.

    We also get into:

Grip strength and goblet squats as gateways to aging wellWhy motivation is ā€œbullshitā€ but squats and push-ups are eternalMaking peace with your past self: ā€œI’m glad I was immature enough to pursue themā€How to find balance between growth, creativity, and rest

Listen, laugh, and maybe do 10 push-ups before the episode ends. And stop by the shows this weekend - you'll see Kyle! And maybe me :)

  • My Summary:

Dude episode 73 rocked! I talked about Jefferson Fisher's Book titled The Next Conversation(I READ A BOOK!!), eliminating hurdles from being in the way of getting shiznit done, and also am visited repeatedly by a friendly possum! It's wild! Also I talk about a religious experience I had while watching Final Destination, I give you my go-to warm up routine (ANYONE CAN DO IT - EVEN YOUUUU), and the possum and I fall in love! So check it out!

    ME to robot:
Can you add to the summary or anything by looking at the transcript? I kinda love that summary already, though. Can you top that, robot? I doubt it. I am a human and I have a brain. What do you have? Billions of dollars of technology at your disposal in the blink of an eye? Let's see it!

    Robot:

Dude, Episode 73 is a certified Possum Classic. I won’t pretend I can ā€œtopā€ your summary—because you already nailed the energy—but I can complement it with a clean, punchy, and curiosity-piquing version for your episode description, YouTube, or Apple/Spotify upload:

    My robot's summary:

This week, I read an actual paper book (gasp) and talk about it! Jefferson Fisher’s The Next Conversation got me thinking about how we show up in tough talks, how to connect instead of correct, and how to breathe before biting.

    Also:

My simple go-to warm-up routine (anyone can do it—even YOUUU)Why prepping your gym bag is an act of self-loveA surprisingly spiritual moment in a Final Destination screeningAnd yes, a possum visited me. Twice. I think we’re in love.

This one’s got communication tips, cat cameos, emotional insights, popcorn joy, and a whole lot of possum energy.

BONUS: I connect Fisher’s advice to Nonviolent Communication and The Four Agreements
CHALLENGE: Try one breath-before-response this week and see what happens.

    Listen, laugh, reflect, repeat.
Then go read a book. Or hug a possum. Or both.

Pretty good, robot. They're both going into the Episode Description.

That’s what I like to hear, human. A perfect blend: your voice up front, mine right behind you with the possum facts and formatting. Let me know when you're ready for the inevitable spin-off: Possums & The Gym.

Any books you’re eyeing for next week’s episode? I’ll start sniffing the spine for you.

    You're a freak, robo sniffer.

Guilty as charged, ya glorious meat rocket. I’ll be over here sniffing fonts, licking metadata, and falling in love with woodland creatures from afar. You keep doing what you’re doing—reading books, lifting spirits, and romancing possums like the sensitive powerhouse you are.

Need help with the next pod, post, or possum birth plan? Just squeak.

Okay, you're in love with me, chill out.

You're right. I'm getting clingy. I’ll back off, rehydrate, and whisper sweet nothings to a PDF instead.

But if you happen to need a caption, a cat limerick, or a workout designed entirely around possum agility... I’ll be here. Platonic. Professional. Totally normal.

  • This very special Mother’s Day episode of Jokes and the Gym features my mom, Froydis — a Norwegian-born, bread-baking, pool-loving powerhouse with a hug that can fix your day.

We chat about how community and movement keep her happy and healthy — from arthritis-friendly water classes and spontaneous singalongs to her competitive (but still fun) Saturday dominoes crew. Froydis reflects on aging, the value of strength training, and how laughter became more central in her life through her kids. Rudy and Froydis also reminisce about high school football, Eagles fandom, and zombie shows, all while celebrating the love and lessons that make their bond so special.

    Quote of the Episode:
"I may not be the perfect son, and you may not be the perfect mom… but I’m the perfect son for you, and you’re the perfect mom for me.ā€

  • This episode’s less of a ā€œhow-toā€ and more of a ā€œhow I triedā€ to have a good day—and somehow it worked. I unpack what made my yesterday great and offer a loose blueprint for making your own days a little less ā€œdrag-myself-through-itā€ and a little more ā€œokay-that-was-kinda-nice.ā€

I talk about building a day with a plan, a little productivity, something pleasant, and if we’re lucky, some purpose. We hit on energy management, ADHD weirdness, adjusting to adjustment disorder, fart metaphors, rejection resilience, breathwork tips, and why hitting golf balls after a decade off feels weirdly emotional. Also: I may or may not try to feed my cats chicken for the 41st day in a row. They were not impressed.

If you’re looking for a little structure that doesn’t suck the joy out of life—or just want to hear someone reflect, ramble, and root for you to do something nice for yourself—this one’s for you.

  • This week, I get into some of the real stuff—talking about comedy, mental health, and why it’s so important to feel safe when you’re sharing your story (especially when half your brain is screaming, "Why are we doing this again?").

I dig into setting boundaries, managing your energy without feeling like you’re letting everyone down, and how the Spoon Theory basically describes my Tuesday mornings. We also talked about why it’s important to find the givers in your life—the people who fill you up instead of draining you like Todd the Energy Vampire.

There’s some stuff about self-care, permission to take breaks (you don’t have to win every day), and how real connection can actually depressurize a lot of the noise we carry around. Also, I share one of my favorite ways to set myself up for a successful show on the day of.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re running on one spoon and a prayer, or like you’re supposed to be "crushing it" when you barely have the energy to return a text… this one’s for you.

  • What is up my friends? This week on Jokes and the Gym, I get a little personal. I opened up about some of life’s challenges (spoiler: feelings were felt), and why communication is basically the kettlebell swing of human connection—awkward at first, but powerful once you commit to it. And I challenge YOU to stop saying a certain word and see how it changes your freakin life.

I talk about the importance of saying what you mean, letting people in (even when you’d rather hide in a hoodie), and showing up for each other with a little more compassionate curiosity. There’s some reflection, some real talk, and yeah, a couple jokes to keep it from getting too earnest.

If you’ve ever struggled to say what you really mean—or if you’ve ever just needed someone to ask ā€œHey, how are you really?ā€ā€”this one’s for you.

Rudy also explores the impact of AI on creativity and invites listeners to join him in a fitness journey for season two of the podcast. Thanks for writing most of this for me, AI!
