  • This is a VERY loaded podcast in which we talk about combining minimally invasive surgical and medical care with nutrition to Carrie's journey with Type 1 Diabetes and her decision to pursue a plant-based ketogenic diet and then discuss the viability of plant based diets when it comes to achieving dietary and therapeutic goals.

Bio: Dr. Carrie Diulus is one of just a handful of board certified female orthopedic spine surgeons in the United States. She practices β€œpatient-centered” medicine rather than the traditional β€œdisease-centered” model. She starts by identifying all of the factors that influence a patient’s health. This understanding is then combined with state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical and medical care including complementary and nutritional approaches to develop an individualized program for each patient’s unique needs.

  • Keto or fat adaptation has its advantages and weaknesses. In this podcast, we get into the nitty gritty of athletic performance and talk about how we can potentially and strategically use carbs, proteins and fats both to improve body composition and enhance performance.

    Bio:

In short, Peter started his journey about 3 years ago following NSNG(No Sugar No Grain), fell to the dark side and started following the "Eat loads of extra fat, Fear Protein" groups. He then came back to develop the facebook group to support the science of low carb at The Fat Adapted Athlete.

His starting weight was 275 lbs when he got fed up. He had always a fit person (Cop in the USAF, Martial artist from the age of 5, l lived in an Aikido school for a bit/UshiDeshi, avid weight lifter) but eventually at 46 and 275 lbs, he decided to go low carb and train for a marathon. That turned into running 40-60 miles a week/2000+ miles a year and he dropped to 199. Currently he is at 215-220 lbs and aspiring to reach his goal to lean out at 205 lbs.

Bio: Dr Gary Fettke is an Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. He has a major interest in the preventative medicine and encourages his patients to lose weight before undergoing surgery. Although his speciality is surgery, Gary believes it is much better to help people avoid surgery if at all possible by taking preventative measures, which often involve altering the diet.

In recent years Gary has focussed on the role of diet in the development of diabetes, obesity and cancer. He has been speaking out on the combined role of sugar, fructose, refined carbohydrates and polyunsaturated oils linking together to be behind inflammation and modern disease.

He has incurred the wrath of regulatory bodies for his stand on public health, but he and his wife, Belinda, remain active defending the benefits of low carb healthy fat living. • Knowing all about healthy diet and nutrition is one thing but how do you take all that you learn and apply it to yourself and your own family, especially when it comes to raising your children in a healthy way? This podcast talks about incorporating routines, training and a healthy diet into your family as a whole.

Bio: Danny and Maura Vega are Miami natives who now reside in Tampa, Florida. Danny was the starting runningback for his high school football team and led the county in rushing yards. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 2004, where he was a member of the football team. After college, he pursued his Master's of Science at the University of Florida, where he worked with the national championship men's basketball team, women's basketball, tennis and golf. He then went on to become the Strength and Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams win the 2007 conference championship.

Maura had a passion for dance since she was a young girl. She is classically trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. After high school she found herself struggling with her weight, and spent the next several years restricting food and even went as far as trying out a plant based diet for the sole purpose of "being skinny." A ketogenic lifestyle has not only freed her of her disordered eating, but she has also found relief from severe postpartum depression and anxiety.

These days, Maura and Danny can be found spending most of their time with their two boys. They have a unique way of thinking when it comes to children, and how to raise them. They unschool both of their boys who are also now following a ketogenic diet. Both boys have found relief from allergies and autoimmune issues with a ketogenic diet. They hope to inspire and change the way we see and treat children, and also how we feed them.

  • In this show we talk to the expert who is part of one of the biggest diabetes management and reversal communities in the world. We cover the challenges faced by being type 1 diabetic and successful management of this condition, especially in the light of newer research and evidence.

Bio: Dr. Ian Lake is a GP locum in Gloucestershire, UK. He has had a long term interest in preventive medicine. Having Type 1 Diabetes himself, he eventually discovered and was strongly influenced by Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book. He adopted a ketogenic lifestyle 4 years ago and found it was transformative regarding his health and wellbeing. He is keen to spread his knowledge to all with Type 1 so that they are aware of alternatives to the conventional diet. Like seemingly everyone else on a low carb lifestyle he has written a blog on running and Type 1 diabetes. (http://www.type1keto.com )This was primarily to show that carbohydrate is not essential in type 1 diabetes, and ended up demonstrating that 'extreme diabetes' was not eliminating carbs and fasting but following conventional advice.
