  • KG has referred to this conversation topic as a little 'spicy'. Though we suspect many of our listeners will feel the heat in different ways, if at all.

Before you listen, be aware this conversation is politics 'adjacent'. However, we do not delve into any political detail, and it is not really a response to an election result. It is, though, a response to the many responses an election result has triggered.

We aren't sure how spicy you'll find it, but strap yourself in and have a glass of milk handy (or your preferred non-dairy alternative)!

  • Being aware of how we 'show up' in our workplaces, how we interact with our colleagues and what our bodies are telling us in even the most seemingly trivial interactions (am I anxious, tense, relaxed, energised?) is, at least in our experience, a critical set of skills for anyone practicing leadership - at any level.

What if we told you that acquiring this most valuable of skills can be found in the paddock, by exploring your connection with a horse?

Jackie Smith is Founder and Lead Facilitator at The Wisdom of the Horse, an organisation providing deep, experiential learning programs for leadership and team development. Jackie joined Paul & KG for a wonderful conversation unpacking the benefits of experiential learning and how working with horses can unlock and deepen learning for both, individuals and teams, helping build trust and genuine connections with each other. It was an insightful, energising and inspiring conversation.

And on this occasion, our friends at Annandale Cellars provided an exquisite French chardonnay (very much in the Chablis style, though not strictly from the Chablis region). Nevertheless, it was a gorgeous, crisp wine, which really carried the full flavour of the chardonnay grape. It was a 2021 Christophe Patrice Chardonnay. Do yourself a favour and stock up for the warmer months!

  • Do you ever feel like things are getting just a little too 'noisy' for you? Maybe you're juggling too many things at work, or change is coming at you at increasing speeds and frequency, or maybe 'doom scrolling' is taking its toll?

Experiences of cognitive load are being increasingly reported in the workplace. It is a real thing that can create high levels of instability in people's experiences of work and workplace relationships. People in leadership positions want to show support for people's physical and mental wellbeing, but the work still needs to get done.

So how can people actually pull away and give themselves some space to rest and replenish, given the pressures of the working environment?

In this Cheeky Half Paul and KG discuss this potential conundrum and throw around some half-baked thoughts and ideas that might provide some insight. Maybe. If not, there's always Meatloaf.

  • In some ways, the word 'Culture' is as difficult to define as one of our other favourite words, 'Leadership'. A number of competing definitions abound, but what seems common to many of our experiences is that, whilst a clear and concise definition may not always roll off the tongue, we certainly seem very clear when we see or experience 'bad' culture. Research increasingly suggests there are clear correlations in organisational outcomes that map to the health of any culture in an organisation - healthy or poor.

But how do we know whether your organisation's culture is going to support or hinder your strategic objectives? How can we clearly measure its health, aside from our own 'gut feel'? And what responsibility can organisational leaders exercise in the cultivation of healthy cultures? Enter Quentin Jones.

Quentin lives and breathes organisational culture. With a deep and expert research lens, he measures the health of cultures so as to provide opportunities for remediation, enhancement and growth. Join Paul & KG as they wrap their heads around how a fuzzy term like 'culture' can actually be a driving force for healthy and productive teams and, by extension, organisations.

On this occasion, our friends at Annandale Cellars provided an exquisite Australian blend from Soul Growers in the Barossa Valley. The 2022 Soul Growers Equilibrium is, as its moniker suggests, a perfect blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro. It is big and plummy, with a fruity, velvety mouthfeel. Go get some!

  • When leading teams or organisations, there is often an unspoken expectation that, no matter how dark the challenge, those leading us will know a way through to the light. After all, surely they have done this before. They simply open their leadership playbooks to the relevant page, and there we go.

    But there we don't.

In this Cheeky Half Paul and KG talk about the potential folly of insisting on solving problems the same way you've always done it - which is essentially the purpose of a 'playbook'. We assume most of us concur with the well-worn adage, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results." It's no different in our daily leadership practice.

    So what's the 'answer'?

  • Back in Cheeky Half 17, Paul & KG considered the Social Cohesion Report, researched and published by the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute. It is a veritable goldmine of insight and possibility, pointing out the many ways our society connects, grows and flourishes - and the potential risks we should all guard against in order to protect societal cohesion. They also wound up their conversation wondering if there would be an opportunity to talk to someone at the institute so they could explain the purpose and impact of such compelling work.

Fast-forward (well, not too fast...) almost an entire season later and Paul & KG had the absolute pleasure of sitting with Anthea Hancocks, CEO of the Research Institute, to discuss all things cohesion, and especially the stories that hold us together.

This is a deeply engaging conversation, covering the origins of the research, it's purpose, it's use across a number of domains (social policy, community engagement, to name just two) and the way stories around our local communities help to create and sustain a sense of belonging and connection.

And of course, we are kept company by an unbelievably, top-notch, non-alcoholic Riesling (yes, you read that correctly!). Our friends at Annandale Cellars knocked it out of the park with the stunning Dr Loosen Dr Lo Riesling. It is a non-vintage, non-alcoholic drop that will blow you away. You just have to try some!

  • The concept of Resilience is one whose purchase has increased exponentially in Leadership circles over the past few decades. We preach its virtues and benefits with increasing zeal and seek out practices that will instil in us the necessary skills to overcome and bounce back from adversity. But what if we have so totally misunderstood resilience as to render it nothing more than a myth - an unattainable holy grail that, in fact, can do more harm than good?

Paul has been reading (always a fraught activity in his hands) and has been struck by the possibility his entire conception of resilience has fallen prey to the myth. As KG listens patiently, they both try and wrestle with the possibility that they have been too narrow in their thinking and that resilience may be so much more. How might this change how we think about leadership?

Here is the book that triggered the conversation:

  • We often talk about leadership as if we all shared a common understanding of its purpose. But what is leadership for, really? Is it to ensure things get done? Is it to inspire others to a shared goal or purpose? What if its purpose were both grander and more noble than that? What if leadership practice exists to effect the 'common good' in society and those that dwell within it?

According to Associate Professor Samuel Wilson, from Swinburne University and researcher for the Australian Leadership Index, the concept of the 'common good' is an idea whose time has come, and leadership practice is very much at the forefront of shifting it beyond an abstract concept to real, lived experience.

Join Paul & KG as they talk to Sam Wilson to try and get their heads around the idea of the common good, and the forms of leadership practice that might make this common good a reality.

Today's wine is a delicious and fruity one from Gounyan Wines, in Australia's capital, Canberra. The wine is a 2023, Murrumbateman Syrah. A smooth and medium bodied red wine that fills the mouth with soft fruit and spice. A lovely drop provided by our friends at Annandale Cellars. Check them out for this and other outstanding wines.

  • Cheeky Half episodes are Paul and KG's attempts at articulating ideas on leadership they've been tossing around but not fully comprehended. It's a way of starting a conversation and seeing whether anything 'sticks'. It is also a great vehicle for engaging with a growing, and increasingly vocal, audience. And it's the latter that really pumps them up!

In this short episode they address some listener questions and concerns triggered by a recent episode where Paul and KG asked, "What makes a great leader?" (Ep 4.04). We're so grateful for these listener interactions, please keep them coming. This question is yet to be fully resolved.

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." It is an affirmation as well as a promise made by many countries via the ratification of a number of Human Rights treaties. Australia is one of the countries that has made the 'promise' to uphold those treaties. However Australia has not fully incorporated these treaties into its own domestic laws through a comprehensive national human rights act, which has been a point of ongoing confusion, contention, debate and advocacy for some time.

This has tested many people in leadership positions time and again, shedding light, not always positive, on the many fraught decisions and uncertain paths that need to be explored if the fundamental principles of Human Rights are to have any meaning or value in our society.

To unpack what all this means, and to explain the purpose and future of Human Rights in Australia, Paul & KG had the privilege and absolute pleasure of sitting down with Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher who, at the time of recording this conversation, is the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission.

We think you will find this conversation as entertaining, informative and inspirational as KG & Paul did. And of course, it was well-served by a most unconventional, yet delicious, wine from Gilbert Family Wines, in Mudgee, NSW. The wine is a 2022, Pétillant-Naturel Rosé. A gently frizzante wine that is both refreshing and holds its weight with generous mouthfuls of fine fruit, including strawberry and watermelon. A lovely drop provided by our friends at Annandale Cellars. Check them out for this and other outstanding wines.

  • The need to present a professional persona to the world is now pretty much assumed. In fact, in some circles it is expected. Social media platforms have paved approaches and practices that allow us to reach thousands, if not millions, of eye balls. The process and outcomes of shaping our image and narrative for the consumption of others is often referred to as 'branding'. But questions remain: do these efforts work (to what end is yet another question), and is it worth our time?

In this Cheeky Half Paul takes his usual contrarian position, while KG tries to talk some practical sense into his cynical tone. To brand, or not to brand. Is that really the question?

  • What makes a great leader?!?

It wasn't until a listener emailed Paul & KG this question that it dawned on them they had never actually discussed this topic. After some time together at the podcast desk, and a gorgeous bottle of wine, they realised why this had been the case. It's a bloody hard question to answer. It's complex and, in some circles, a little muddled, heated or controversial. But that's never stopped them before!

So join KG & Paul as they deflect, qualify and oversimplify what is, in effect, a very simple question with some very complex answers. Please join us to help us make sense of it. What is great leadership for you? Please email us and let us know how far off the mark they might be (though messages of support and encouragement are also welcome!)!!

And, as always, this great conversation is aided and abetted by a funky (in a good way) and most rewarding wine - a 2022 Barossa Tangerine Dream, by Smallfry Wines. It is an 'Amber' wine, with light skin contact and an unusual blend of Semillon, Pedro Ximenes, Riesling, Roussane and Muscat. Light and refreshing, yet layered enough to challenge any wine lover or someone who simply wants to try something different and delicious. It was generously provided by Annadale Cellars. Delectable.

  • We do love a 'straight talker'. Someone who is courageous enough to call out the BS. Someone who feels comfortable to speak their mind, and call it 'as they see it'. But sometimes it doesn't take much for a virtue to transform into a form of 'violence'; all of a sudden, we feel disempowered by someone else's 'truth'. A 'truth' held so tightly that it suffocates dialogue and goodwill, disregarding unconscious biases and unspoken intentions. Often, these are 'convenient' truths - declarations that exist to advance an agenda and stifle dissent. You may know what we're talking about.

This 'violence' can be amplified when there is a power imbalance. When leaders call things 'as they see them' it can spell doom for diversity and innovation, and sometimes even cultivate fear, as those around them dare not contradict those above them.

In this Cheeky Half Paul & KG talk about how productive leadership practices can be hijacked by such pernicious assumptions around our own perceptions of the world around us.

  • *** WARNING: SOME STRONG LANGUAGE IN THIS EPISODE. ***

Many of us might regularly reflect on the big concerns confronting our generation - climate action and our nation's relationship to first nations people are just two of these. And many of us would like to do something about these complex issues. However, for whatever reasons, we might feel like it's not our place, or perhaps we feel we are not authorised nor have the power to do anything at all.

For many years now, writer, comedian, journalist and filmmaker, Dan Ilic has been pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the public domain, challenging what he considers to be a lack of action from our leaders on climate change, amongst other things. His mantra? Don't wait for someone to give you permission to 'shake the tree'. No one's going to give it to you. If you feel strongly enough, use whatever power is available to you and exercise any leadership you can to start that conversation.

Join KG & Paul as they talk to Dan about his use of comedy and satire to generate awareness and, on occasion, actually get something done.

As is our custom, this great conversation is held together by an elegant and complex Chardonnay from vines in the cooler regions, southwest of the Australian capital. A 2022 CLO Tumbarumba Chardonnay. It is smooth, full without being heavy, carrying tasty flavours of pear, lime and green apple. It was generously provided by Annadale Cellars. And, as usual, it is utterly delicious!

  • Many of us know someone in a Leadership position that oozes self-confidence. They are highly skilled, backing every one of their decisions, as if they were fated. However, what happens when those people lack self-awareness? Many of us have experienced that fallout too.

But this leadership character 'equation' may also be turned upside down. What if we worked with a very skilled leader, high in self-awareness, but awfully short on self-confidence?

On this Cheeky Half Paul & KG riff on these seemingly simple questions which often generate complex outcomes. How do the dynamics of self-confidence and self-awareness 'show up' in leadership practice. Is there such a thing as 'balance' between each, or are we merely chasing rainbows?

  • If you are currently a practicing leader, regardless of the size of your team or organisation, you really don't need us to remind you that it can be a tough gig. Good leadership practice is nothing to sneeze at. It's serious business.

But does it always have to be 'serious'? Is there any room for light-heartedness or humour? Can laughter enhance how we lead and how others respond to our leadership?

KG & Paul shared a wonderful bottle of wine, and a great conversation, with Gary Eck, one of Australia's best known stand-up comics. Gary is also a filmmaker, author and Coporate MC. We dared to pick Gary's brain and explore the potential role of laughter and humour in leadership practice. Join us for great insights, and a lot of laughter.

This fun conversation was helped along by a 2021 Prunotto Dolcetto D'Alba, from the Piedmont Region in Italy. Fruity and easy drinking, it is a wine that will reward you with every sip. And, as usual, it was generously provided by Annadale Cellars.

  • For this Cheeky Half Paul & KG riff on the latest report by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, the "Employer Gender Pay Gaps Snapshot." It is both, a compelling and somewhat unsettling look at Australia's progress in reaching gender pay equity. The many interesting pieces of data lead them to ask a couple of simple questions: "What conversations are people in leadership positions actually having about the existing gender pay gap? And is it that difficult a problem to solve?"

It will not surprise you to hear [spoiler alert!] they don't end up solving this conundrum. But nevertheless they firmly believe leaders have a responsibility beyond finance and economics to find a way through this intractable problem. Is it ultimately a reflection of how we actually value our people?

  • KG & Paul have always held the position that healthy, productive, and even impactful, leadership practice is one that stays with the difficult conversations - even when these conversations are likely to reveal the most inscrutable, even darker, sides of our own natures. These aren't always comfortable conversations, but they can nevertheless carry a sense of hope and desire for authentic dialogue, mutual understanding and a genuine acknowledgement of the dignity inherent in all of our humanity.

To that end, we had the pleasure of a great yarn with Nicole Major and Melissa Clarke, both from Thirriwirri. We felt it important to continue the fraught but necessary conversation that didn't stop with the 2023 Referendum of a Voice to Parliament - it simply switched gears. Nicole is a Bundjalung woman from northern NSW and Melissa a Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna and Wirangu woman based on Kaurna country in South Australia.

It was a broad and super engaging conversation about their experiences leading up to the referendum, and also their thoughts around what could come next. And not only that, they also brought the wine! (Pretty special). It was a delicious 2021 d'Arenberg 'The Footbolt' Shiraz. A great drop!

start Season 4 by visiting our sponsor's 'wine cave'. Sitting down with Chris Loth, the owner of Annadale Cellars, and a generous friend of the show, they spend a brief time hearing about Chris' passion for wine, his inspiration and his approach to how he makes his wonderful CLO wines. And, of course, he cracks open a wine he is very proud of, the 2022 CLO Orange Chardonnay (that's Orange, as in the wine region in NSW, Australia, not the colour nor the fruit!). It's even more exciting to us when we get to share that wine with some very special people as we broaden our discussions and listen to their stories, their experiences and their wisdom. We really love our guests. Join our hosts as they re-live some of the joy and wonder they've experienced through these conversations.

And of course, we want to thank our guests for their generosity and, above all else, we want to thank you, our listeners, for your continued support. Thank you so much. Please keep listening!

Our generous sponsor Annadale Cellars continues to support our passion project with a most delectable wine to keep the conversation running smoothly!

For this episode Annandale Cellars has provided a wonderful Australian white wine. This conversation was helped along by a 2022 Frederick Stevenson Bianco. It is a bright, zesty wine made in an Italian style. Plenty of citrus and minerality. A wonderful summer wine, but don't let the seasons stop you. It's great any time!
