  • What is the journey like when you’re adopted and begin the search for your identity beyond your adoptive family?  In this heart-warming and vulnerable conversation with Julie McGue, author of Twice a Daughter: A Search for Identity, Family, and Belonging, we dive into our own personal experiences of adoption from different angles. As a twin adopted in the sixties, Julie had the challenge of finding her birth parents, and the disappointment that initially came from her attempt for contact. Our conversation leads to the importance of awareness, following your knowing, and moving through grief, excitement, and the roller coaster of emotions that come from learning where you came from.

    About the Guest:

Julie Ryan McGue is an American writer, a domestic adoptee, and an identical twin. She explores the topics of finding out who you are, where you belong and making sense of it. She is the author of two books: Twice a Daughter: A Search for Identity, Family, and Belonging, and Belonging Matters: Conversations on Adoption, Family, and Kinship. Her third book, a prequel to Twice a Daughter, is due to be released in November 2024.

  • In this episode Heidi Dunstan and I have a candid discussion about the importance of talking about and acknowledging one another in grief.  In the past few years it is hard to come across another human that has been free of experiencingloss.  We are all grieving.  For some it is fresh, for others it is aged, but remains – because grief is not bad – it’s a testament to have loved.

This episode is a gentle reminder to yourself as a griever, or as someone who is in the sphere of another in grief that it is not simply the loss that must be acknowledged, but the path of healing and hope that comes from allowing others to be seen.  To truly help; honour, have empathy, love, and be present for and with another in their journey.

With allowing it to be in what it is – tears, laughter, dark humor, or even silence. This episode will touch your heart for certain.

    About The Guest

Heidi Dunstan is a Certified Grief Educator and best-selling author. Her passion to help others, learn more about grief, and how to support others who are grieving came after losing her husband unexpectedly almost three years ago. Her experience with friends and loved ones saying the wrong thing or completely disappearing gave her first-hand knowledge that many people have never learned how to grieve which often leaves grievers to grieve in isolation.

    Hugs,

  • In this episode I take you on an adventure and invite you into some of the ways, as wacky as it may seem, that I bring intentionality to something that may seem quite silly.  Being intentional speaks to Bashar’s 5 laws: You exist; All there is – is now; All is one and one is all; what you put out you get back, and everything changes except these 4 laws.

In the realm of wellness, I share a unique opportunity that is brought forth with the intention to spread love and light – to inspire hope -and to connect, even if for a moment.  I hope you enjoy this episode, and it makes you smile!

  • Your observation of the world. Is your opportunity to shift what you are seeing. If you are looking for negative, bad, trouble or challenge -  those things are a lot more likely to appear.  When you're looking for possibilities, openness and opportunity, those too are more likely to appear.

In this podcast I offer you a challenge I presented in our weekly SHINE group meeting. Shine is a group of people that come together to talk about mind, body, spirit, wellness, around challenges with food, body image, movement and recognizing that whole wellness is the most important part of wellness. In our SHINE group this week ew were talking about looking for acts of kindness.  I invited our members to share an act of kindness that they had themselves personally observed recently.   One person shared observing an act of kindness between two children. Where one just naturally reached out to help another one that was falling. Put their arm out as the child was falling, steadied them and returned to playing in a natural sequence of events.  That kind of kindness, that automatic response kindness happens often.  Observing it is so beautiful.

Listen to learn the three steps to shifting your observation skills, and ultimately the way you see the world around you.

  • In a continuation of the conversation with Dr. Peter Kellett about the mask of masculinity and how it affects men’s health and relationships, Peter discusses the powerful role masculine archetypes of can serve in both understanding men’s behaviour and understanding how to work with men in pursuit of personal and spiritual growth. He discusses the classic four archetypes of the mature masculine including: The King, The Warrior, The Magician, and the Lover. He also articulates a potentially new overarching archetype that he uses in his work, which is based on the ancient principle of Metta. Metta is a Pali word that means benevolence and loving kindness, and Peter suggests that if a man operates from a perspective of Metta masculinity, that he will essentially engage in a mature form of all the masculine archetypes in a way that is beneficial for him, those in his life, and society as a whole.

The conversation touches many topics including the tendency for immature masculinity to be portrayed in many media representations and within the system of patriarchy itself. We discuss a variety of examples including Will Smith’s notorious slap at the Oscars.

Dr. Kellett also discusses how men’s inauthenticity in their emotional presentation related to their quest to meet expectations of masculinity in society can lead to trapped trauma energy in their body. Therefore, somatic approaches to coaching and therapy can be very helpful to assist men to not only identify their trapped emotions but also process them in the pursuit of greater health, well-being, and growth.

At a time when many men are collectively confused about what it means to be a good man, Dr. Kellett suggests that exploring these archetypes of mature masculinity, including metta masculinity, can provide an ethical guide to engaging with the world. He further articulates the need for mature men to step forward as mentors to guide their sons and other boys and men through example.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Peter Kellett’s vision for Metta Man Coaching, and its community, was born out of thousands of conversations he has had with men who share similar struggles and feelings, and the recognition that many men are reluctant to talk about these topics or don't have a safe space to be vulnerable and work through these issues in their own lives.

Peter is a men's coach, men's health and well-being expert, registered nurse, researcher, Reiki practitioner, lightworker, and empath who has spent much of his career studying and teaching about men's health and well-being, while concurrently navigating depression, anxiety, divorce, relationships, career changes, leadership, co-parenting, blending families, and overcoming feelings of never being enough.

Peter hopes that Metta Man will provide a forum to discuss a range of issues that men face in their lives and that sharing his expertise and insights through this community and coaching will help other men navigate their own challenges more easily.

Peter brings a lot of life experience to this work. While he is currently living in Alberta, Canada, he has lived in three countries (U.K., Canada, and the U.S.) and has worked as a nurse in multiple settings, as a leader in health care, and as a university professor and researcher. Most recently he has been developing his skills and practice as a transformational somatic men's coach and as a Reiki energy practitioner. He is married to his wonderful wife Tanya, and is a parent to three young men and a young woman (two from his first marriage and two step-sons from his second). He loves music of all types, movies, reading, and soaking in source energy while hiking with his Sheepadoodles Walter and Maggie, and kayaking in nature.

  • Men are socialized to not talk about and express their emotions from a very young age, profoundly affecting their mental health and well-being and impacting their relationships. Dr. Peter Kellett, invites us to think about the impact of this “mask of masculinity” in this episode.

Are we teaching young boys and men to wear the mask of masculinity? The trauma that results from masking their authentic selves can make it hard for many men to express their feelings and as a result many men struggle to put words to their feelings, a condition called Alexithymia.  However, anger, aggression and lust are often viewed as being more acceptable than being vulnerable so Dr. Kellett says that men often turn to expressing these emotions when experiencing emotional distress, such as depression.  While we must take personal responsibility for our own emotions in relationship, many men turn to doing things rather than exploring their feelings or talking about them with their partners.  Dr. Kellett gives insight into why men want to “fix” things rather than simply listen, and how they may have a fear of rejection or being shamed when they share emotion.

The internalized messages of what it means to be a man that have beeninformed by misogyny and patriarchy for generations are not only harmful for women, but also inconsistent with mature masculinity and men’s well-being  Rather than being able to express or embody vulnerability, some men turn to protest masculinities which may include verbal sparring with other men, affairs, pornography addiction, and even substance abuse.  Men may also use humour to mask pain or their fear of expressing emotion because laughing and making light of things is viewed as being more socially acceptable than being vulnerable.

As society continues to engage in conversations to about the socialization of men we talk about the power of authenticity, the benefits of integrating both the sacred masculine and divine feminine in our lives, and the role that engaging in metta masculine practice can play in removing the inauthentic mask of masculinity in the modern world.

Stay tuned for a future episode where Dr. Kellett and I discuss male archetypes and how they show up in the lives of men today.

He

  • Barbie’s hot new return may have brought a shortage of pink paint, but there’s also a rising sense of nostalgia and recognition of her evolution through the years.

Why is Barbie The Movie and all things Barbie making such a powerful comeback?

    Nostalgia.

Barbie brings back memories of a simpler time for many of us. Hours of playing pretend, not as a mother to baby dolls, but inviting us to pretend we were adults doing adult things with our adult friends. A different kind of imagination. Barbie was an independent woman.

Since her debut in March of 1959 Barbie has brought both positive and negative reactions through the years. She’s been a hot topic between mothers, within the feminist movement, and in childcare settings.

My mission with Perfectly Imperfect is to help other see the light in themselves. This means embracing body positivity and supporting women to love the light within themselves over the desire to be light by way of the scale. In a world that has changed so much Barbie’s introduction, her long-standing success and influence is fascinating.

Any way you look at it, Barbie is a powerhouse. Yes, Mattel is the marketing powerhouse, but BARBIE is the complex icon that has provided hours of play to many children, hours of sewing to many mothers, and many conversations about her messages and impact. She has evolved with the times and will likely continue to. For many of us Barbie will always have a special place in our hearts. Whether you’re a Barbie lover or loather, she’s here to stay.

Are you a Barbie girl? What significance, if any, has Barbie had in your life? Perhaps revisit some memories or consider what messages you think she sends. Barbie is everywhere right now, so rather than running from it, let her be a beacon for your own reflection and spark conversation.

  • We are excited to bring you this encore presentation of one of our most popular episodes. We hope you enjoy!

Feeling sexy an any size is a struggle for many, and yet body positivity has created an environment where “Victoria’s Secret” no longer dictates sexiness.  In this episode I am joined by Joani, a SHINE member, who shares her experiences around sexiness, confidence, comfort, and joy as she navigates the realities of life as it happens.  She shares that SHINE was a program that changed her intentionality, presence, and awareness with some real-life change and challenges. Joani also describes her experience of the SHINE community as a re-set, accountability, and special place for connection and support.  In the the end, she shares that SHINE isn’t really about weight loss because  “the best weight you’ll ever lose is between your ears.”

    We also talk about:

    -   Wearing what you want for YOU vs. another

    -   Size/health/fitness myths

    -   Accountability

    -   Motivation versus momentum

    -   The importance of “feeling” goals

    -   Navigating the inner critic in various parts of life

    -   Spreading love and light through acknowledging others

    About the Guest:

Joani is spectacular soul!  As a married mother of two, working multiple jobs and in the beginning stages of building a business, she struggled to make time for herself, and part of that has included a battle with weight most of her life. She proudly owns her days, lives with intention, and is grateful that SHINE came into her life when it did.  When asked what the best part of 2022 was, she said, “Finding SHINE.  It changed my life.”

  • Have you ever had a “good cry” and felt amazing afterward? Today we are talking about tears and crying.  There are many reasons we cry, and in this episode I talk about the reasons I have found myself in tears lately, and why I let them flow.  There are many reasons we cry, and even different kinds of tears that we cry.

There are benefits to crying that are physiologically part of us, so we talk about this regulation mechanism and how crying helps you.  We are going to dive into how “tears water the seeds of growth” – a statement that has impacted me for years, from Jack Canfield himself, to my heart and yours.

    We touch on:

    -      Physical, emotional and spiritual pain

    -      The benefits of crying

    -      Self-soothing, and emotional balance

    -      Joy, relief, grief, sadness, frustration, overwhelm

    -      Recovering from emotional stress

  • As part of the self-love summer series, I share my beloved Karen Westwood (Mia) with you.  In The The Trifecta of Joy book, I share about the creation of my high counsel, Karen is a cherished soul sister of this group, and her wisdom is a gift I am so grateful to share with you!

In this episode we talk – like we do as friends – about where we are in life, navigating change, priorities, parenting, children’s health and wellbeing at any age, and the lessons and gifts along the way.  In the process of life, we share our connection through grief and loss, and wanting to find healing for ourselves and others.  The power of friendship and guidance from one another can help us find our centre, we need one another to hold one another up, encourage, and hold safe space for one another.

This journey of life is difficult enough and this conversation is a reminder of having reflective experience in friendship.

We share the way we are led by intuition, trust, and surrender by also trusting the process of life unfolding.  Being who you want to be in the world and trusting the uncertainty of the outcome of our paths, the blooming peony is explored as a metaphor for life because I’ve been obsessing over the process of waiting for the bloom.  Nature teaches us that the journey, environment, support and patience are key in life – and that we must realize that the outcome will come.

Recognizing the tiny decisions you make along the way allow you to choose who you want to be in the world. This heart filled, playful, peaceful, and loving conversation is an honour to share with you. May this beautiful conversation be one of inspiration and nourish your heart.

    About the Guest:

“Soul sister Karen is my spirit sister. She connects into my soul where peace is always found.  Emblazoned on the beam over their dining room table are the words “Peace At Home”.  Karen is home.  She and I have created a magical space where energy is held with a depth of understanding unsaid. She is a creative inspirer, and passionate about the power of relationships between mothers and daughters.  She is beauty defined in mind, body, and spirit because her energy is magical!  This friendship is of a deeply spiritual level. Our non-linear journey of friendship is one of beautiful flow!”

  • Pets are a beautiful piece of raising our vibration!

We often give them personalities, voices, and so much more, and they bring us JOY in a unique way! In this conversation with the creators of the app PETZBE, Andrea Nerep and Chelsea Rose  we explore how our pets bring peace, joy, creativity, and a different understanding of the world.   In an effort to create “the cutest community on the planet”, PETZBE is a neutral space to showcase the world through our pet’s perceptions.

When Andrea Nerep realized how common it is for pet parents to make up voices for their pets - a common psychological phenomenon called anthropomorphism that makes us more empathetic and connected, she began the mission of creating a space where there are “no humans allowed”.  The bond we develop with our pets creates a connection many humans share, and this is another way to connect and foster empathy. Chelsea Rose Riggs combines her love for photography and love of animals to create a unique pathway for pets and owners to connect in a safe, creative, and simply FUN way! This conversation will have you thinking about your relationship with your pet differently!

In this episode we also discuss:

    -    Pandemic pets

    -    The therapeutic role of pets

    -    Pets and depression

    -    Safer social media

    -    Fostering inclusivity in neutral ground online

    -    Presence as a practice with pets

    -    Mental health, empathy, compassion, connection

    -    entertainment and fun!

    About the Guest:

Realizing that society is obsessed with social media and pets, PETZBE creator, Swedish-born and now New York based Andrea Nerep and her dog, Angus (a Brussels Griffon) partnered with Los Angeles based Chelsea Rose Riggs to create what they believe is “The cutest community on the planet.”

PETZBE is simple to use and easily downloadable on most smart phones when you find it in your smart phone app icon. (Note: Some versions of Android may have trouble downloading the app.) Designed using current state-of-the-art technology, this social media platform, although contributed to by humans, only allows pets to participate. With a soft-launch and ample time to test the PETZBE technology in 2018, PETZBE now has over to 800,000 furry, feathered, scaled, slithery and other diverse and loveable community members.

Just like human social media sites, each PETZBE member page showcases and highlights the life of your individual pet. You can connect with others while featuring your pet’s photos, videos, feelings, and thoughts (that you create for them). If you like another member’s content, give it a “Lick” (Like) or click on their “Sniff” (Follow) and voila, you are now “Sniffing” (Following) them.

  • What if trapped emotions are getting in the way of what you truly desire in life?  In this episode I host Michael Losier, best-selling author of Law of Attraction. Today’s subject is the power of vibration and how old negative emotions can hold us back from what we truly desire in life.

Positive emotions = Positive vibes and Negative emotions = Negative vibes

Michael uses a modality called Emotion Code Clearing to help clients move beyond their trapped and sometimes unknown emotions that have been holding them back, so they can continue to attract more of what they want in life!   These emotions may be causing physical pain, mental and mindset challenges and negative triggers, and he finds them and clears them!

In this episode Michael demonstrates emotion code clearing as my proxy, and deletes a couple of emotions he pin-points as a challenge standing in my way.  This is an incredible demonstration of his ability to identify and release old negative emotions on his client's behalf, even when they are unaware of what is holding them back. He’s goooooood!

    About the Guest

Michael Losier, known as the how-to-guy for teaching Law of Attraction, is a best-selling author of the three (3) books: Law of Attraction, Law of Connection, and Your Life's Purpose.

  • As Mother’s Day just passed, I acknowledge that this can be a complex time for many.  This podcast chat with you has been in my heart this past few weeks, so I decided to just record my thoughts with you.  Keeping in mind that we know children need emotional warmth, personal care, and sensory stimulation for growth, success, and an ability to feel safe and secure in the world, I flip the switch to ask you to consider how you give these things to yourself.  You’re invited to glimpse in the rearview mirror, but recognize that you’re the driver of your own bus. Stripping away shame and blame, you can take responsibility for yourself and how you move forward.  The art of mothering is not exclusive to moms.  It’s the essence of love and light when you show up in the world and shine!
