When this podcast ended, we promised that we would come back if we could land interviews with people associated with the show. Today we are keeping our promise and are back with a writer and producer: Richard Gurman! Richard was involved with Married with Children from its start with the Unaired Pilot in late 1986 through the end of Season 10. He also wrote the first episode of Season 11. If there is one person besides the show's creators who can tell the complete story of Married with Children, this is the guy!Mr. Gurman has a new book out on April 23, 2024 entitled Married… With Children vs. the World: The Inside Story of the Shock-Com that Launched FOX and Changed TV Comedy Forever. This book is the definitive inside story that you need to add to your Married with Children collection, and just like watching episodes of the show, you will want to read this book over and over again! This book has been reviewed and endorsed by Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, David Garrison, and Michael G. Moye!Richard worked in Hollywood for over thirty-five years writing, producing, and showrunning such popular TV shows as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, Diff’rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Still Standing, and of course Married… With Children. In 2017, he produced the documentary film This Is Bob Hope for the PBS series American Masters, and in 2020, along with director John Scheinfeld, he executive produced the documentary The Happy Days of Garry Marshall for ABC. According to IMDB he has writing credits across 21 shows, producer credits on 15 shows, and has also been a creative consultant and story editor. Richard holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley.In this interview, Annabel talks to Richard about his Hollywood career, his days on Married with Children, and of course about his book! In the unaired pilot episode of this widely successful, ribald sitcom, Al Bundy has a chance of getting front row seats to the basketball game, but Peggy makes him stay home and meet their new yuppie neighbors, Marcy and Steve Rhoades.
Differences between the unaired pilot and the actual pilot include Bud Bundy being played by Hunter Carson and Kelly Bundy played by Tina Caspary. Ritch Shydner also had a starring role according to the opening credits.

When the lunch delivery girl accepts old sandals as payment because Al and Griff have no money, they realize that the shoes have trading value. Meanwhile, Kelly finally gets her masseuse license, but accidentally cripples Bud when trying out her skills on him.

Al is kicking Peg and the kids out of the house so he can watch Death Wish 6 3-D in privacy on pay per view. But Bud also needs the house for himself: his pen pal, Starla, is getting out of prison and is coming to see him. Unfortunately, Starla decides to rob the Bundy's at gunpoint. It turns out that she has escaped and is on the run, so she ends up holding the Bundy's hostage. Starla also has a dim-witted boyfriend, to whom Kelly becomes attracted to, and the feeling is mutual. Then the D'Arcy's, who are about to leave on a charity masquerade cruise, barge in and end up hostages as well.

Marcy wants the Bundys to stay indoors because her "identical" cousin Mandy is coming for a visit and Marcy does not want her to be repulsed by them. Mandy's flight, however, is early and she takes a cab. Since the D'Arcys are at the airport waiting for her, she comes to the Bundys. This leads to Mandy spending the day out with Al and Jefferson. Suddenly Peg and Marcy find themselves jealous.

Al makes Peg stop her constant shopping by taking his card away from her and electrifying the phone so that she cannot place any orders. Meanwhile, it's Jefferson's 40th birthday and he has to accept he is no longer a young man and Marcy may one day leave him; so, Marcy forces him to get a job, which he does, as the new aerobics instructor at a new health club Peggy wins a free membership pass for. Elsewhere, Gary hires Bud and Kelly to shoot a TV commercial for the shoe store. There is a role for a shoe salesman. Al forces Bud to hire him, but Al has no acting experience.

Unfortunately, Al has forgotten the most romantic night between him and Peg, who throws him out to the doghouse, literally. Meanwhile, Kelly is auditioning for a role, but faces stiff competition from her nemesis Heather Talrico, another blonde bimbo. Kelly challenges Heather to a boxing match; the loser has to give up the role.

Jefferson has joined the National Guard. He tells Al and Griff of the benefits: for one weekend per month, one gets to party with a bunch of guys and even get paid for it. Of course, you have to pass basic training first, but even that has a benefit. One does not have to go to one's regular job, but the boss still has to pay the salary. Al and Griff suddenly feel the urge to serve their country.

Since Bud is actually earning money, Al starts charging rent for the basement. Bud and Al sign a lease and Bud pays his rent, after which he claims that the "apartment" is in need of repair. A health inspector declares the basement condemned and gives him a month to get the basement repaired. Al then is forced to wear an electronic neck band that prevents him from leaving the basement.

The Married with Children Podcast is absolutely thrilled to talk to Ed Bell this week, known professionally as E.E. Bell, who played Bob Rooney on Married with Children from Seasons 8 through 11. In fact, his character was NO MA'AM's treasurer!
Ed was born in Norfolk, Virginia and moved around a lot as a child since his father was in the Navy. He eventually settled in the Chicago area before embarking on his acting career in California in 1983. IMDB lists around 100 acting credits, but the true list is much, much longer. There are also a few surprises!
In addition to acting, Ed is member of a band named The Whooligans (https://thewhooligans.com/) where he plays tenor banjo and lead vocals. Annabel and Matt talk to him about his early life, how he was able to follow his comedy passion, his early career in Hollywood, his time on Married with Children, and of course his television and film career after Married with Children, along with much much more!
