  • This podcast is a little different!

In just a few days, we are heading to one of the year's most important Canadian Agility Championships. So, the time has come to think about the mindset and mental game needed to set ourselves up for the best chance at success!

In their last class before the trip, the McCann Clan asked me for a pre-competition pep talk! So, late last night "After Class", I did a brain dump of all my thoughts! With this quick turnaround, I decided to jump into the studio to share this pep talk with all of you! I thought it might be helpful to listen to on the way to a competition.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY & Remember, YOU GOT THIS!

  • In this episode we're joined by our dear friend and fellow competitor, Dave Munnings. Dave travelled all the way from England to visit us for some Agility training, so we captured him for a few podcast episodes!

We met Dave years ago while competing overseas at the Agility World Championships & due to our similar humour PLUS our views on dog training & agility, we connected almost immediately. It was no surprise we were also on the same page when it came to people's "Attitude" in Agility.

We talked all about the many situations where someone with a negative attitude can affect you whether it be at a class or competition. We also talked about the different mindsets that allow for optimal learning and growth as a handler. We shared some pretty great stories too!

There is no holding back on this one!

    Enjoy!

  • We are delighted to bring you this episode of the After Class Podcast!  Today we REAL TALK with Mental Game Coach, Kathy Keats.  Kathy has years of experience competing internationally in both Basketball,  Dog Agility & Sheep Dog Trails.  She has helped a wide range of people to achieve their goals and learn to overcome those mental obstacles that hold us back.

Since we're all International Level Coaches, we wanted to talk about ALL aspects of mental game.   We talk about things from a handlers perspective - How to deal with pressures at a trial, how to control your thought before, during & after a run, how to recover from a poor performance & so much more!  We also from a coaches perspective!  How to help your students reach their goals & potential, how to help students when they are struggling with their mental game and what to do when students attitude is effecting those around them.

This was SUCH a fascinating conversation!  I hope everyone is able to leave with many take aways!

If you'd like to learn more about Kathy Keats programs about Mental Game, visit her website: www.KathyKeats.com.  Kathy also has a fabulous Podcast of her own called "The Kathy Keats Show".  You'll find some great episodes to listen to.

  • In this episode we're diving deep into the age old question "HOW DO I GET MY DOG TO HAVE CONSISTANT CONTACT PERFORMANCE IN BOTH TRAINING & TRIALS?".  It's VERY common for dogs to have 2 set's of "criteria". One that is often wonderful & reliable in training and then another in trials where sometimes behaviour goes off the rails.  Why does this happen?  What can we do get GREAT contact performance in competitions?  How do you deal with dogs who push the limits in a trial setting?

We hope you enjoy this episode!

  • The dog sport of Agility is amazing……you know what else is amazing? How athletic, nimble and daring our dogs are!  This is something that we all need to think about & appreciate. What we ask of our dogs in Agility and how willing they are to go above & beyond is truly remarkable.

Sadly though, injures are happening more frequently in the sport. Injuries can be caused by many things and can happen in all levels & organizations of Agility. Kayl & Jamie both train & compete at the International level. They've noticed that over the years, courses have become more challenging, the dogs are getting faster, handlers are training more intensely and without awareness of injury, this all raises the possibility of our dogs having a shortened career.

In this episode, Kayl & Jamie talk about the personal experience they’ve had with their own dogs being injured, signs to look for to know your dog could have an issue, and prevention ideas that will be great to hear, regardless of your experience with the sport.

Our dogs safety comes first, always!

We hope you enjoy this podcast and take even 1 thing away from it that could help your own dog or another 4 legged family member that you love!

  • If you're at a point in your progression with your dog and you're wondering how you can continue to forward with your success.... you may want to look at HOW you are training!  Running Sequences & course in training can be fun & beneficial, but many people are so focused on running the WHOLE sequence that they allow for mistakes to happen too often which turns in to HOLES in your training.
In this episode, besties Kayl McCann & Jme Moreau speak VERY candidly on some of the common mistakes they see people make when training their dog that lead to a plateau in their agility journey.   They will also share with you some important DOG TRAINING tips that could make all the difference in fixing issues like knocked bars, dropping commitment, popping poles etc.

The training choices we make during a training session can make all the difference in the success we have - which then reflects our attitude and our dogs attitude.

    Let's train SMARTER not harder!

  • We are SO excited to have our very first guest on the Podcast.  Jaakko Suoknuutti is an accomplished Agility Handler & Coach who is widely respected in the Sport of Agility.  He & his partner Janita Leinonen are the creators of the popular handling methodology OneMind Dogs.  They've both been a part of Team Finland for many years and earned many world championship titles.

Jaakko and Kayl met back in 2012 and became fast friends.  Kayl spent many years traveling to Finland to train and Jaakko would travel to Canada to coach the McCann Dogs Agility group.   Jaakko has the unique ability to see an Agility course from the dogs perspective which gives him the ability to teach, handle, design courses and coach students at a whole new level.   We are very honoured to have him as our guest today!

In Part 1 of this 2 part podcast, Jaakko & the girls discuss the many facets of becoming a better handler for our dogs by understanding what our DOG needs from us as we navigate a course.  We're going to share with you the concept of  "CCC" - Connect, Commit & Cue which are the 3 steps that have to happen between every obstacle on course!

Be sure to check out Part 2 (Launching July 2, 2021) where we continue to deep dive into the best ways to walk a course, REALLY knowing & understanding your dog and the life changing topic of  "Lead Changes".  You don't want to miss it!
