(Trigger Warning: This episode talks on themes surrounding depression, such as self-harm and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.)
IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN - We're all feeling just a tad bit sadder. Seasonal Depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), what is most commonly referred to as "winter blues" in Western countries, is prevalent during these -ber months, and it can get very difficult to navigate through. This involves feeling overly fatigued, losing interest, social withdrawal, losing sleep, and feeling hopeless, among other things. I had a mental breakdown a few days ago, and as much as it seemed attributable to seasonal depression, I can't help but think that this also has something to do with the stresses that come with being in the field of medicine. In this episode, I talk about this recent breakdown, how I ~sort of~ bounced back from it, as well as pose some questions on how we can better address mental health concerns for healthcare professionals such as ourselves.
