Hello! Azure and I had a follow-up discussion about Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea (you can find the previous episodes on Azure’s literature podcast, We provided our answers to the questions posed by the audience, incl. the Big Question: why did Jane Eyre go back to the side of Mr. Rochester? WHY?! We also argued that the famous manifesto of gender equality is more of a beguiling display than a heart-felt and effective confession of self-worth and independence. We delved into Bluebeard, the literary archetype of many stories. We read Wide Sargasso Sea, examining how Jean Rhys reversed the narrative of the so-called madwoman in the attic. Finally, we offered our theory on why and how Jane Eyre continues to fascinate generations of readers and what role it plays in imagining a form of pure Britishness.

  • Hello! It’s been quite a while – Welcome back!
In this very special episode, Cherry and I were thrilled to have invited Mr Joseph Graves, actor, director, and writer of theatrical plays on the stages of Broadway and China. In 2021, we saw Revel’s World of Shakespeare at Da’ning Theatre. We loved it and couldn’t help shedding a few tears. Now, we had the opportunity to chat with Joe! He shared with us stories behind the creation of Revel’s World of Shakespeare and Man of La Mancha (senior and junior edition), among others. We were inspired by his dedication of bringing the wit and joy of theatre to so many people. Joe has offered us a glimpse into the secret of his successful career. I won’t tell you what it is – you need to listen to the episode to find out :)

Thank you, Joe, for this wonderful afternoon!

I talk about a Japanese late-night TV show called Old-fashioned Cupcake. It is a classic office romance. Despite the many familiar genre tropes, I was touched by the actors' selfless and powerful performances. I compare it with Cherry Magic and talk about how they approach themes like age anxiety. Tenderly, it asks questions about what to do when facing the ending of a relationship, and human beings’ exploration of their desires and fears in a near future.

  • The privilege of direct experience had led me away from literary and academic work, yet now I felt that to understand my own direct experiences, I would have to translate them back into language. Hemingway described his process in similar terms: acquiring rich experiences, and retreat to cogitate and write about them. I needed words to go forward.

--Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air

Hello, this is Part 2 of 'Meditation on Med'. You are going to hear a quite personal reading of a great book When Breath Becomes Air.

When Breath Becomes Air was written by the late neurosurgeon Dr Paul Kalanithi, who discovered he had had a late stage cancer during the last year of his residency. He wrote about why he chose to study medicine, neurosurgeon in particular; the lengthy and demanding training. He wrote about the peculiar nature of neurosurgery, an operation of the brain, which requires the patient to answer: what makes life meaningful enough to go on living. The diagnosis of lung cancer put Dr Kalanithi in a place of a patient and forced him to think about this question, and to take action to pursue what was meaningful to him at the end of his journey.

Like most of the readers, it was an eye-opening experience for me to get to know some knowledge of neurosurgery, and it was heartbreaking but at the same time inspiring to read Dr Kalanithi's story. But it is Dr Kalanithi's take on writing, or literature, that touches me the most. I love when he talked about he wanted to get to the junction where medicine, morality, and literature intersect, which is profound for me, who recently changed career path. I love when he quoted Hemingway to highlight the need of 'translating experience to words'. It is literature, or writing, or things that are not science-bound, that makes this book happen. It has encouraged me to think about what role literature can play in my life - a companion that guides and consoles me, a tool that helps me to cogitate and to understand.

So, be aware this is not your usual book review; rather, it's a meditation of jobs, calling or not, and the meaning of life, whatever elusive form it takes.

Hello! You are listening to a mini series 'Meditation on Med' where I talk about medical-related TV, film or book. In this part, I talk about a hit British TV show This Is Going to Hurt and an acclaimed TV-film Help.

Both works look at how Britain's health system functions under increasing stress. In This is Going to Hurt (03:26), we follow junior doctor Adam Kay's hectic life at labour wards during the year 2006. This is an ace TV production, tragicomedy at its best. I was utterly impressed by the ensemble: every small role shines and, for the leading actor, Ben Wishaw, needless to say, nailed the meanness and kindness of Adam beautifully.
The show also allows us to look behind the system, to have a peek into how the medical legal system works, the drastic difference between a private hospital and an NHS one, among others.
    Major spoiler alert from 10:55 - 13:06
Really, you should have a look at this show: it is so good!

Help (14:02), starring the amazing Jodie Comer, is a much chilling TV-film. It follows Jodie's character Sarah, a new care-taker at a Liverpool Care Home, during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. The unapologetically raw depiction of care home workers and residents living with scarce PPE during the pandemic is difficult to watch. But Jodie's performance is moving and powerful. The film also brings back memories of mine during early 2020. Truly an important film of this era.

In the next episode of this series, I'll dive into Dr Paul Kalanithi's memoir When Breath Becomes Air, another great piece of work on medicine, mortality, and the meaning of life.

    Hiya!
In this episode, I talk through a Japanese movie ‘彼らが本気で編むときは、’ (‘When They Knit in Earnest’ or ‘Close-Knit’). Young girl Tomo comes to live with her uncle for the period of time when her mother leaves her alone to chase a hopeless love affair. Tomo embarks on a journey of coming to understand and make friends with her uncle's girlfriend Rinko, a trans woman. This is a heart-warming story about a girl learning to accept and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community, but also one that investigates the social prejudice towards trans woman and gay man. However, my point of interest lies beyond its obvious topic. I was captured by how this movie approaches care, create and motherhood. The movie showcases a myriad of ‘failed’ mothers: some have an estranged relationship with their kids, some failed to give their kids the gender they belong to, some simply don't understand or support their kids. One of them is Tomo's mother Mimura, the run-away single parent. Mimura’s story propels me to think about 'the absent experience of motherhood' in physical and biological contexts and how that (dis)enables the idea of a good mother.

    Highly recommend this movie x

    Hi!
In this episode, I talk about a manga-adapted low-budget Japanese TV show 'Lifebelt' (Ukiwa), which is directed by Kazama Hiroki (风间太树)and stars Kadowaki Mugi(门脇麦).

I knew Kazama san from Cherry Magic, and became fond of how he uses cinematography to tell the delicate exchanges of emotions between individuals, often in a workplace setting, and how he utilizes elements of fantasy to investigate longing between unlikely lovers.

First I compare his works with that of Lucy Forbes and Benedict Spence, whose works include The End of The F***ing World. I point out Kazama and Lucy&Benedict are able to transform a seemingly cheesy story plot into something profoundly moving. Their takes on humor and awkwardness are spot-on. Their cinematography enhances the style of the production.

Lifebelt follows Maiko, a newly-wed house wife, who discovers her husband Nakayama is cheating on her shortly after the couple moves to Nakayama's company's HD in Tokyo. In sadness, Maiko forms a bond with her neighbor/colleague to her husband Mr Futaba, whose wife is also cheating on him. The two neighbors, through their tiny everyday interactions, find themselves in a zone where they are closer than friends, but not quite lovers.

Lifebelt asks: what keeps/drives people together? The show is charming, stylish, fun and enlightening with beautiful scenes and solid performances.

    Hallo! Wie geht's? ;)
In this episode, Lassie and I talk about 'Princess Charming', a German reality TV show that features a lady lead who is looking for the - wait for it- Princess in her life. This is the first lesbian dating show we've watched and we are obsessed with it!!
We talk about what we love about the show, the girls, and what this show could improve in its second season (yeah). We point out that both Irina and the girl she finally picks may be a conscious choice, as the show endeavors to showcase a positive image of the lesbian community. Having said that, we don't doubt there is genuine emotion/affection between Irina and the girls, we are just questioning if 'representation' is a valid mission for a dating show, as courting can be lengthy, messy, and ambiguous. What if the lover is imperfect, what if the audience doesn't love the winner – will that make a difference? When we speak about raising visibility, is it a curated visibility we are referring to?

When playing back the recording, I did notice that we've been conservative, especially when it comes to the talk about a possible bisexual lady lead. I've been thinking about our disagreement with a drama-filled courtship between the participants (rather than one between the lead lady and the participants), and I noticed that that may be one of the queerest parts of a queer romance: in the end, it is not a black-and-white situation as you are likely to fall in love with those who you are supposed to 'compete with'. I thought about if our perception of an 'orderly courtship' is a product of straight-centrism and whether what is thought to be natural is, in effect, one of the many cultural constructs?

I suppose that's one of the things I am trying to do through podcasting: every episode is an attempt of spelling 'nuance' – to speak out what I love and what I dislike, to spell out what is great and what doesn't sound about right. It is only by trying to 'spell nuance' that I am able to see the nuances and difficulty of the process and, by doing that, to review what I have been taken for granted and what I have been overlooked.

Every (sometimes failed) attempt is, nonetheless, a good attempt.

Oh. If there's one thing I learnt from Princess Charming, that is: being single is NOT being vulnerable. After all, it's a show of 21 single girls, and it's wonderful.

Hallo! In this episode, I talk about a memoir Hanna's Chongqing written by a Chinese-German lady called Johanna Stahl. I visited 'Mountain City' Chongqing this April and couldn't stop thinking about it. This precious memoir about wartime Chongqing in the eyes of a young girl allows me to revisit its eventful and tumultous past through a very special lens lent by a daughter of a German diplomat.

I talk a bit about the story behind its publication and I can't speak highly enough of its beautiful translation (06:23). For me, Hanna's Chongqing is both a coming-of-age story and a war reportage. Hanna's story helps me to understand the records on war in a much tangible and accessible way. I also talk a little about Hanna's adventurer-turned-diplomat father, and her Chinese mother's legendary journey.

Hanna's Chongqing is a powerful memoir, and I highly recommend it!

I challenge myself in this episode to talk about a topic that I have long been interested in: the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Some six years ago, I was shocked to learn there was such a big war happening in Europe that I knew nothing about. Films like Quo Vadis Aida (06:07) and comic reportage Safe Area Gorazde (25:05) allow me to learn a little bit more about the odd turn of history and the sufferings of the civilians.
Each of the four works I have covered here tells a story of a different place in Bosnia. Quo Vadis, Aida? looks at the Srebrenica Massacre. I argue that the film is smart in keeping 'a false glimmer' for the audience when its highly capable and brave heroine attempts to save her family from being killed by their neighbours-turned-tormentors. I point out the chilling line that happen in the execution room may be a comment on the status quo of European cinema, which had been remained silent on its dark recent past.
Then I review the first two books I have read about BiH. Zlata's Diary (20:57) follows Zlata's everyday life in the war-time Sarajevo, while The Bosnia List (22:18) records Kenan's puzzling childhood in Brcko.
Safe Area Gorazde is an excellent comic book that does not shy away from the traumatic experience of the town people of the then-enclave Gorazde.

  • 欢迎收听The Minchester Review!

Hi!! Have you missed me? ;)

In this episode, I talk about a Japanese fiction called Spring, at Barneys (2004) by Yoshida Shuichi, one of my favorite writers.

Spring, at Barneys is a sequel to Yoshida's early novella The Last Son (1999). The early work tells the story of Tsutsui, of how he navigates his life as a young gay man, lives in a world that is malignant and violent to his community, and sways between a life as the boyfriend to someone he does not love and parents' demand of him to form a family. Spring, at Barneys sees Tsutsui in his 30s as he bumps into his former lover in the department store and ponders on his current life as a married man with a kid.

I was mesmerized by Yoshida's nuanced writing, which looks into the seemingly mundane moments of life, and the eventual emotional outbreak of a man who seems to be living a life he is contented of. The writing is effortless and piecing. I tried to translate a few passages that I am very fond of. (23:39)

I talk a bit about the adapted film, which stars Nishijima Hitedoshi (*swoon*).

I also talk about how the idea of 'the past' intertwines with Tsuitsui's escapism. By analyzing a small episode where his father rejects his dream of studying in the US, I argue that the idea of studying/living abroad, as it invites a new form of language, allows physical detachment, and forms a space of literal 'different time zone', embodies the ultimate illusion of freedom and possibilities.

36:54 Some expanded readings including how 'the past is a foreign country' plays out in Yoshida's novel.

Hello! In this episode, I've invited Lassie to join me in discussing Promising Young Woman, a film starring Carey Mulligan and is the first feature film by British director/writer/author/actress Emerald Fennell. She is a show runner for Killing Eve S2 and plays the part of the Duchess of Cornwell in the Crown.

You might spot a girl like Cassie in a Friday night club. She's wasted – apparently, phoneless and friendless. 'Do you need help?' you ask and she takes the favor. Minutes later when you tell the cab driver to change the destination to your place, it is, however, you who have no idea how this night will unfold.

We talk about how we love the unforgettable character Cassie yet can't help but feel doubtful of her motivation and if her plan can actually work. We try to read behind this enigmatic title, and discuss the costumes, music, and cinematography. Lassie also compares the film with Samaritan Girl《撒玛利亚女孩》and Pieta《圣殇》by Korean director Ki-duk Kim(金基德), drawing attention to the atonement between women.

While Cassie is not a good model, PYW is hilarious and heart-breaking at the same time; it is urgent and thoughtful. Highly recommended!

    01:40 Spoilers - film introduction
13:17 Why the film is called Promising Young Woman when Cassie is neither promising nor young
20:49 Cassie's behavior reminds Lassie of what happens between the female characters in Ki-duk Kim's Samaritan Girl and Pieta.
32:06 Warning from Lassie: Do not follow Cassie's actions! They can be dangerous to you.
32:45 The relationship between Ryan and Cassie is a false glimmer.
43:15 Catherine finds hope from a lineless small character.

Hiiii Welcome to Season 2 of the Minchester Review! I'm very happy to introduce you to one of my favorite singers Louis Tomlinson. Through five tracks, I talk about his music and life.

00:05 'Defenseless' - Early this Feb, this track single from Louis's debut Album WALLS was promoted by fans to reach No.1 on iTunes Worldwide Chart, one year after its release.
08:40 'Strong' by One Direction – Louis is a co-writer of this one and he has written over 1/3 of 1D songs; Strong is one of my fav :)
12:52 'Back To You' by Louis and Bebe Rexha – Fans see this duet a metaphor of Louis's not-always-smooth relationship with his label; highly recommend this MV! A duet that refuses to sexualize females.
15:25 'Two of Us' – a song Louis dedicates to his late mother Jay.
20:56 'Kill My Mind' – a Louis's favorite (and mine!) that tells much about his music inspirations (Oasis, Arctic Monkey etc)

Before I start talking about Louis (from 04:15), I go through a question list that I've been thinking about lately: how do we (fans) tell the story of an artist that we like? How do we prove our point that (s)he is excellent/brave/inspirational? Where do we draw the line between their professional achievements and what happen to their personal life? How do we decipher the agenda of media coverage while relying on them as our limited sources?

How do we find truth; how do we share passion; how do we talk about love?
I guess that's the point of writing and talking about things on podcast; it is this process that requires me not just to collect 'evidences', to prove a point, but also to examine this process itself.

I hope you like this episode; do check Louis's music!! xx

On New Year's Eve, I want to share with you my review of a Japanese TV show called: Cherry Magic! 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!
It tells the story of a socially awkward 30-year-old virgin called Adachi. After gaining the magic to read other people's mind, he quickly finds out his colleague Kurosawa has been secretly in love with him for 7 years!
