This episode is a rebroadcast.
We live in a new world, and the church needs to be ready to minister in this new world. In this episode, I reflect on Bob Whitesel's book "Growing the Post-Pandemic Church" to see what he thought ministry was going to be like beyond 2020. What adjustments would the church need to make to keep ministry alive and meet the needs of their communities? Find out in today's episode!

How long, to sing this song?
Welcome back to My Seminary Life. This week on the show we have another addition of Rabbit Trail. This week I kick things off by recapping my latest sermon on Psalm 40:1-3 as the first part of my series on Processing Grief. Then I launch into the story of the composition and recording of one of U2's more religious songs, 40. I also discuss the significance of the War album, and how I have grown as a preacher over the past ten years.

How do you stir up another believer to love and good works when they are freaking annoying!
This week on the show we have another Rabbit Trail. After reviewing my recent sermon on Hebrews 10:19-25, I sit down to answer the question, "how do I stir up someone to love and good works when they are so freaking annoying?" We all have "that person" in our lives that can be difficult to love, and social media wasn't a thing when this epistle was written. Also, how do I do all this while also setting healthy boundaries? In this episode, I reflect on all of that and walk away with a few takeaways.

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's Rabbit Trail, I recap my recent sermon on Joshua 1:1-9, look at its relationship to helping us transition in leadership, and ask the question, "why do we gender verses?" Down this rabbit trail, I look at a couple passages that we specifically assign to men or women, I rant about how it's just culturally influenced, lazy hermeneutics, and ask the additional question, "when did we start doing this?"

Is there a right way to fear God?
Welcome back to My Seminary Life, and the start of a new series called Rabbit Trail. In this series, I will take you down a path that I wanted to go down in a recent sermon I preached but couldn't make it fit in my notes. In my recent sermon on Hebrews 11:1-3, I mention how there is a proper way to fear God. Here in this episode, I take you down that path on why I think fearing God matters, how it can serve as a guardrail against being too casual in our faith, and you get to hear a lot from Producer Cooper.

What is Black Ecclesia Interpretation?
This is the finale to our Camp My Seminary Life series on Hermeneutics as I review "Reading While Black" by Esau McCaulley. In this episode, i breakdown some of the main portions of the book, talk about McCaulley's approach to Black Ecclesia Interpretation, and what it was like for me as a white man to read a book that was not directly for me. I also spend time showing how this 5 Star book fits well with another 5 Star book we have reviewed on the show, "Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes."

The Summer Camp series on Hermeneutics is back with episode four of five with an introductory look at Biclical Criticism. In this episode, I discuss briefly what Literary Criticism and Historical Criticism is, how they can positively play a role in our Hermeneutical process, and some of the paths that people take to arrive at conclusions that I myself may not agree with. I also breakdown the long-standing, unhealthy mentality that some Christians have of "it's not from my group therefore it is wrong."

Welcome to day three of Camp My Seminary Life, campers! Today, we have a guest counselor here to speak to us about Heremeneutics. Joshau Noel, the host of Systematic Geekology, Dummy 4 Theology, and The Whole Church Podcast, has three reasons why he thinks Hermeneutics is important. Hermeneutics has played a role in his life story, feeds his quest for understanding why we believe what we believe, and...gives him lots of poop jokes?

Welcome back campers! Here on day two of Camp My Seminary Life I sit down to paint a better picture of what the hermeneutical process looks like by walking you all through my process. Whenever I sit down to write a sermon or Bible lesson, this is what it looks like for me to study and interpret a passage of Scripture.

Welcome to camp! Camp My Seminary Life begins this week on the beautiful shores of Lake Tolien. This year for our first ever summer camp we are looking at the topic of Hermeneutics. This is an essential subject for both pastors and believers of all kinds. In this first episode, I address the question, "What is Hermeneutics?" In understanding the importance of studying Scripture in its context to interpret it, we also look at Hermeneutics' relationship with Homelitics, how one is an art while the other is a science, and how big and deep this topic can be as we dig deeper into the context of Scripture.

It is the final day of Summer School! In this episode, I sit down to discuss one of the other current cults, Twin Flames Universe. Listen as I unpack what a twin flame and the Mirror Exercise is, discuss the controversial practic they have of assigning genders, and I give my thoughts on how we sometimes over-complicate the concept of "the will of God for my life."

We are on Day 4 of our Summer School series and we are going to focus more on current cults that we need to be aware of as they are currently operating. Today's focus is on 7M and Shekinah Church lead by Robert Shinn. In this episode, my wife Claire joins the show to review Netflix's most recent documentary "Dancing for the Devil" and talk about the history and essential teachings of Shekinah Church. We also get practical to address next steps that we all can take to stay educated with what is going on with this group and how to be a part of the solution to bring justice for the glory of God.

Mormons. We're talking about Mormons today. The Summer School series on Cults rolls on with Day 3 covering one of the most reconizable cults out there, what is commonly referred to as Mormons. In the episode, I walk through a brief history of the Mormon Church proper, talk a little bit about some of the differences between other smaller Mormon groups, and highlight some of the major teachings in the church that differ from Protestant Christianity. I also propose a an interesting question, "How long does a cult need to exist and how large does it need to be before it is no longer recognized as a cult but just as another religion?" I also take some time to reflect on the beauty that is simple, true Christianity.

Who are the Witnesses of the WMC?
As our Summer School series on Cults continues, I am once again joined by author Christian Ashley of the Let Nothing Move You podcast to discuss a time when he was approached by followers of Mother God. Christian and I discuss the complicated history of the Church of God in South Korea before it was relaunced into the WMC. We breakdown some of their teachings, including the belief that Jesus has already returned and gone back again, there is a Trinity and a Mother God, and the need to partake in Passover to be saved. We also seek to answer that very important question of "Will I ACTUALLY run into someone who is a part of this cult?" and the answer may surprise you, especially if you live in the Midwest.

Welcome to Summer School! All this week we will be exploring the topic of cults and looking to answer the big question, "Could I really run into someone who is a part of a cult?" The answer may surprise you with this episode. For Day 1 of Summer School, we're looking at the genre of UFO Cults; cults that have extraterestrials worked into their doctrines. From setting up embasies on earth, to infamous Dooms Days cults, cults that include aliens in their teachings add an unique element to the conversation. I also take a few minutes at the beginning of the episode to address some of my own personal theological shiftings.

Schoolz Out! As we wrap up the "school year" it's time to unwind with an enjoyable film. Here today from Systematic Theology, Christian Ashley rejoins the show to run it back as we discuss 300: Rise of an Empre. Last fall during the Ancient Greece series, Christian and I talked about 300 as a way to discuss the long lasting impact of the Spartans on pop culture. This time, we're just here to have a good time. We review this perfectly average movie, chat about some of the historical issues depicted, and outline how we want Zack Snyder to continue this saga.
