Moving finally into the record’s last chapter, we cover the two closing songs on the album: ‘Our Time Is Short’ and ‘Say Yes To Life’. ‘Our Time Is Short’ relays the unstoppable finite passing of time in a way that doesn’t despair, but compels us to let this fact drive an embracing love for life and what it is to be human, and finally, ‘Say Yes To Life’ sees our protagonist look back on the odyssey he’s been on and extend a hand to all those that relate to the struggle he’s faced. With some help from Viktor Frankl and Friedrich Nietzsche, these songs draw the album’s odyssey to a close.

The fan-favourite, ‘The Deepest Sighs The Frankest Shadows’, is our focus this week - a widescreen, life-affirming indie rock banger destined for stadiums. In our analysis, we’ll break down how the song laments the difficulties of connection in the present day, what our protagonist means by “the unbearable triteness of being”, and how he triumphantly resolves to persevere regardless.

The anthemic, ‘The Heart is a Muscle’, teaches us that we can get better at love the same way we can get better at anything else. Our protagonist defiantly refuses to live in the regret of being closed off to love in this celebration of intimacy, and in its 5 minute 23 second runtime, this song reveals what that looks like.

Today, we delve into the band’s biggest radio hit: ‘Let Me Down Easy’, a song utterly enamoured with dancing, drinking and opening yourself up to love. We’ll learn why our frontman is so moved by the power of dance, the clever ways in which this song *tries* to get us dancing, and maybe even have a little dance ourselves by the time we’re done.

One storm may have passed, but ‘Persevere’ shows us there’s always another one coming. In the face of unspeakable loss, we explore the vital importance of unity, conversation and perseverance. Reconciling faith with the incomprehensible tragedy of life forms a central conflict in this track and the basis for one of the most important conversations of our protagonist’s life.

We explore the final leg of the epic ‘Achilles Come Down’ in this final installment of our 2-part analysis of the band’s most popular track. Here, we’ll see the two opposing voices meet in a Homeric clash with stakes that could literally mean life or death for our protagonist. We’ll learn more about the existentialist philosophy baked into the song, as well as examine some of the implications of a song like this becoming as successful as it has, with the audience that it has.

It's the song you’ll all been waiting for, the climax, the dangling on the precipice of mortality: ‘Achilles Come Down’. In Part 1 of this epic, we analyse the build up to the big clash. We ask and answer why he’s up there in the first place, who the voices are that want him to get down, the significance of the ancient Greek Achilles, and the elusive French sample that sounds a little like Camus. Of course, we can’t leave out the song’s unlikely virality and the connection to the best-selling The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

The title track, ‘Go Farther in Lightness’, brings us to the brink of the album’s halfway mark. Having now explored the hardships of the record’s first half, this song is the calm before the storm - one that sees him return to a sacred place, only to find the same feelings of alienation there that he’s been running from over the past 6 songs.

In the paradisal dreamscape of ‘Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane’, there is everything one could ever want: the perfect love, the perfect kid, the perfect house…yet something sinister lurks beneath the surface. In Track 3 - Atlas Drowned, we hear frustration and defiance in the face of political injustice. Our protagonist takes aim at Australia’s colonial legacy and the notoriously influential ideas of Ayn Rand. We are all urged to not grow complacent.

From anxiety into desperation we come to Track 2 - ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?’. We explore what keeps our protagonist’s fire burning - is it the will to pleasure, meaning or power? Uncertain if the answer is to be found in Freud, Frankl or Nietzsche, this intensely yearning song also sees him ask God what he's to do to keep this fire burning.
